He was just scared..he was killed for just being scared. They just wanted an excuse to kill him, to kill all of them. They shot him in the neck. Because he didn't want to die and was scared. Right infront of his family. His family sobbing, begging, trying to get the soldiers to understand, and then watching them shoot their beloved in the neck. He was shot for being Palestinian and disabled. Just like so many other disabled Palestinians. Even if he had been quiet and stayed down they probably would've killed him anyway eventually. The saddest thing is he was right to be scared. Who wouldn't be?
I hope you are no longer scared, Najeeb Salem Sadeq. I hope your family finds peace and safety soon.

How is the cult from Midsommer white supremacist? Because they are swedish and borrow from paganism? The nazis appropriated Norse culture, they even misused different runes and symbols, and Scandinavia is one of the most tolerant regions in Europe.
There's Nazi imagery throughout the film, & the fact that all the poc die first is no mistake. Ari Aster himself has said that the Harga are White Supremacists:
Defying an outdated horror trope, Aster does not kill off Josh (William Jackson Harper) — the only black character for miles — first. As Aster points out, though, the Hårga are racist, a callback to “a part of Swedish history and European history,” and all of the “outsiders” or “new blood” recruited for mating are purposely white.
“He’s thrown away in a way that the other members of the main cast are not," Aster notes. “And that is because these people have no further use for him.”
The Harga, when not inbreeding with each other, go out and groom new members to either 1. Be sacrified or 2. Introduce new genes by manipulating people into the cult or drugging & raping them (what they did to Dani & Christian), & they ONLY pick white people for this. There are no nonwhite Harga & that's not an accident.
The script also makes it crystal clear that the nonwhite couple were specifically chosen (bc they are not white) & brought there to be sacrificed & were never going to live. The member that brought the nonwhite couple displays hatred & malice towards them when they're not looking, but doesn't do this with the other white outsiders
Tumblr media
(Ingemar is the Harga that brought Connie & Simon, the nonwhite couple). Connie & Simon didn't do anything wrong, they didn't do anything outright to insult the Harga. The only thing they did was be shocked about seeing the ritual suicide & express desire to leave (and they weren't the only ones who did this, Dani also did). And yet they were some of the first to die.
Even the visuals-- the Harga wear all White, it's always in blinding daylight. Whiteness is a GLARING theme. There's also foreshadowing early on in the film, where a book titled "The secret Nazi language of the Uthark" featured in Christian's room just before they go to Sweden.
There's also other Nazi ideology present within the Harga, such as the strict gender roles (the women all wear dresses & cook & clean & care for the children together but the men butcher the bear together), eugenics & ableism (the elderly are killed off at a certain age because they see disability & needing to be cared for as an elder "shameful", which is what one Harga states at the ritual suicide scene, & of course killing off the nonwhite characters), the "return to tradition" ideology (there are NO modern technology in the community, & it's in the countryside).
You see a cult full of ONLY White people, using Norse paganism (something VERY popular with Nazis) in an isolated area, who routinely murder poc, don't intermix with poc, kill off their elderly, Dani (the blonde, light eyed white girl) is praised for her beauty & made their May queen by the Harga, with strict gender roles, & this film was made by a JEWISH MAN to show the Harga as the bad guys, & you don't have a hunch that the Harga are maybe supposed to be white supremacists/nazis? That doesn't raise any red flags for you?
& let's not forget how Scandanavia committed genocide against the Saami, the Indigenous population who were there for hundreds of years before anyone else. That's a little off topic, but as a First Nations Canadian I aint gunna let that just go unacknowledged. Scandanavia has a white supremacy problem too, & Ari Aster is right for pointing it out

Hey Gentiles!
I think some of you really need to know what antisemitic language and Jew-hatred looks like online.
I've been seeing way too many people here on Tumblr (some of them people I used to follow) posting antisemitic, Nazi rhetoric celebrating and trying to justify the murders of Jewish civilians.
This Jew-hatred ONLY EMBOLDENS NAZIS AND WHITE SUPREMACISTS TO ATTACK JEWS. It does NOT help the Palestinian people.
Now, I am about to say some things that will be hard for you to hear, but I need you to listen.
Here's some of the Nazi rhetoric that I've been seeing on my dash:
When you say shit like this: "Most Israelis secretly support the Israeli government."
What you are REALLY saying is this: "ALL JEWS secretly support the Israeli government." (Just like this idiot accused Neil Gaiman of today.)
And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "All Jews are part of a secret international conspiracy to take over the world."
YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.
When you say shit like this: "What Hamas did was brutal but justified."
What you are REALLY saying is this: "What Hamas did was brutal but justified WHEN THEY TORTURED AND MURDERED JEWISH CIVILIANS."
And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "I think it is brutal but justified to torture and murder Jews."
YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.
When you you say shit like this: "Those Israelis got what they deserved."
What you are REALLY saying is this: "THOSE JEWS got what they deserved."
And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "I think we should kill the Jews. That's what they deserve."
YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.
When you say shit like this: "This is just what decolonization looks like."
What you are REALLY saying is this: "MURDERING JEWS is what decolonization looks like."
And you are emboldening Nazis, who think this: "I think that Jews in Israel, the US, and everywhere around the world need to be rounded up and exterminated."
YOU ARE SUPPORTING NAZIS.
I shouldn't have to fucking spell this out for some of you, but apparently you need to hear it:
The solution to this conflict is NOT mass murdering Jews! The solution to this conflict is NOT another Holocaust!
To make this even more crystal clear:
1. You are spewing Nazi ideology, and you are MAKING IT EASIER FOR NAZIS TO ATTACK JEWISH PEOPLE. Your words are putting Jews around the world in danger.
2. It should NOT be hard to condemn a group that spouts literal Nazi ideology, murders Jewish people, and wants to murder MORE Jewish people!
3. It doesn't fucking matter if it is Nazis or Hamas, antisemitism is antisemitism, and an attack on Jewish civilians is an attack on Jewish civilians. When you post Nazi rhetoric, all you are doing is emboldening Nazis and white supremacists, and making your Jewish followers feel afraid of you.
4. And if you cannot bring yourself to condemn Jew-hatred, you will have it on YOUR conscience the next time a Nazi attacks a synagogue and murders Jewish people. If you spread antisemitism, that blood will be on YOUR hands.
So...
If you are a gentile, and you see other gentiles repeating these kinds of white supremacist dogwhistles about Jewish people, here's how you can help:
1. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Help people direct their focus away from making antisemitic statements and harassing Jews, and towards helping Palestinians.
Actions that people can take right now are contributing to verified charities and relief organizations that help the people of Gaza. Some organizations that are verified by CharityNavigator.org and CharityWatch.org are:
Anera (92% rating on Charity Navigator)
Palestine Children's Relief Fund (97% rating on Charity Navigator)
Doctors Without Borders (98% rating on Charity Navigator)
2. Call that shit out. Tell people that they're being antisemitic, and explain that Jew-hatred is dangerous to Jewish people. Antisemitism gets Jews attacked and it gets Jews killed. In the US, many synagogues require round the clock security to protect against white supremacists who want to murder Jews. In Pittsburgh, my old home town, a group of Nazis from north of the city planned the murder of Jewish congregants at Tree of Life Synagogue, and so far only one of them (the gunman) has been arrested and convicted of the murders. The others are still at large.
3. Explain to them that it is antisemitic to celebrate someone's death *because* they're Jewish. ALSO, it is antisemitic to blame a random Jewish person for the actions of ANY government, whether that be the Israeli Government or the US Government.
4. Explain to people that they're not going to solve this conflict by posting antisemitic statements and memes online. All they will do is alienate the Jewish people in their lives and make those Jews feel scared and unsafe. And they will contribute to this current wave of antisemitism.
Once again: Antisemitic hatred doesn't help Palestinians. All it does is put Jewish people around the world in danger.

Keep thinking of Rosie allowing everyone else to experience the trauma of war around him in any way they need to. Whether it be after listening to his crew member choke through the Munster story, reaching a hand out to comfort him, making sure the replacements are all settled and feel comfortable with him - establishing that he's someone who can be trusted with any issues - and listening to Crosby tell him he's scared he's becoming a monster and reassuring him, and yet refuses to give himself the same grace.
Thinking about how he doesn't tell Crosby about what he saw after he was shot down, what he witnessed in that camp. He's never really the one telling any stories in the series. He listens and watches, lets others say whatever they need to, all the while keeping his cards close to his chest.
Thinking about Rosie smiling while watching his crew and the other airmen enjoying themselves at the flak house, and yet not allowing himself the same enjoyment. Thinking about how the doctor at the flak house got Rosie to look after himself only when he framed it that looking after himself is looking after his crew.
Thinking about Rosie re-upping, choking slightly on his words as he explains he can't bare the thought of sending some rookie in his place to only get himself and his crew killed.
He won't give himself the grace or patience he deserves, but by god he'll take care of everyone around him.

Tony: okay, so we're all on the same page here?
Peter: yeah, but it's the last page of a book called 'I don't know what the fuck I'm doing'
Tony: Great! We're still all on the same page!
Steve: Let's go fight some Nazis!

AP News: How have your Jewish roots influenced your role in this show, which is set in Nazi Germany? Bebe Neuwirth: I am very grateful to be an artist right now. And I’m very grateful to be a Jewish artist who is helping to tell this story of “Cabaret.” I feel the responsibility. I am a German Jew. I’m also a Russian Jew. I’m a Ukrainian Jew. I feel great responsibility. I’m honored to have that responsibility. A significant part of me is deeply conscious of that every time I step on the stage.
source
I have a lot I can put in the tags as commentary here, but I actually think there are some things going on in this exchange that I don't want people to miss.
First of all, Cabaret does NOT take place in Nazi Germany. It takes place in Weimar Germany. The engine that drives Cabaret is that fascism is coming, the warning signs are everywhere, the darkness is encroaching... but it is not here yet.
Also, look at how the question addresses Bebe's Jewishness vs. how Bebe herself talks about her Jewishness. The interviewer asks about her "Jewish roots", suggesting that her Jewishness could be something just in her past. Bebe responds to that by affirming her identity in the present: she is a Jewish artist, a German Jew, a Russian Jew, a Ukrainian Jew. Like, if you didn't know she's a Jew, you certainly know by the end of that paragraph!
All three of these places have long histories of expelling and murdering their Jews, and not just during the Holocaust. She is here because her family, like the families of many Jews in New York and the surrounding areas (including mine!), survived that and got to safety. It is now her job to get on stage every night to tell a story about how a society allows for that expulsion and murder.
She calls it a great responsibility, and she feels honored to have it.
I don't want to fault the interviewer for phrasing it like this. It could be a way of testing the waters if you're unsure of someone's relationship to their heritage. I just find the ownership in Bebe's answers, particularly at this moment in time and in the context of this show, very moving. Yes. I am a Jewish artist. I am a Jew. Here is my history.
Anyway here's a cute video where Bebe talks about being Jewish and her relationship to being Jewish.

Logs on three hours later to blog about The Zone of Interest: I can’t expect viewers to pick up on cultural forms of representation they have no cause to even recognize (at least here in American English departments you still get Hellenism as the default). But I saw these reactions to the ending that were just like… oh, man. Like if there is one thing I could stress to anybody who watches the film and feels conflicted about that decision, or confused about the attitude of it, it’s to try to keep in mind the centrality of archiving in the Jewish consciousness. Telling/re-telling (inscribing/re-inscribing, producing/reproducing) as explicit meta-commentary — where you are being constantly reminded of the text’s own structuring and framework, its (re-)generation and interpretation across a living historical continuum — if there were an essential “mode” to Jewish narrative, that would probably be it. I think this is being lost on a lot of people. It’s also why reactionaries hate critical theory.

i also realise there's people who are gonna be like "you expect me to believe that tony tinystepsforward is 29, disabled, a sex worker of nearly a decade, worked at automattic for six years, and someone who does as much organising with local trans and prison abolitionist and sex worker spaces as they seem to imply" and frankly you can believe i'm lying if you want, that's your right, just block me or w/e you don't have to be here. but yes i do in fact both work to eat and work for a better world. i just happen to be the kind of person who really struggles with inertia and is always doing a million things. kiasu, as my singaporean friends still call me, though i don't think i fit the classic archetype there at all — it's not a fomo thing as much as a having poor judgement about the feasibility of the ways i want to be generous with my time and energy and skills. i'm working on it. i would like to learn how to rest.

I’m watching a documentary my friend recommended to me called the law in these parts, which is about the history of israeli military law in palestine, and like. jesus christ they were literally just doing lebensraum. the same low density suburban development that plagues north america, the same plan of fascist expansion eastward done by nazi germany was done in palestine, with the justification that these residential settlements built for settler civilians were actually military outposts and therefore legal under international law. it’s literally just lebensraum

Lotta people on this website get a big kick out of yelling "PUNCH NAZIS!!1!!" and it's like. Babe. You are the Nazi.
Like if you see the brutal murders of literal children as "sad" but justified because civilian Jews are "invaders" who "don't belong"....I have some news for you about what you would have been doing in 1940s Germany.

I'm jealous of people denying the massacre of israeli people by hamas.
Imagine living in a world where these horrifying acts didn't happen. Thousands of armed terrorists won't just storm civilized areas and break into your family home and kill, slaughter, and burn everyone in there. They won't rape women and kidnap children and murder babies and elderly people. They won't molest and parade with dead bodies. Such a safe little world you've got there, where there's only one good and one bad, no need for complex thought, no need for cognitive dissonance, no need for fear, no need for extra compassion. Everything is so easy! Ignorance IS bliss. happy for you for being able to live in this world. some people don't. some people are right here having to deal with those horrors. all you do is being no better than a common holocaust denier neo nazi.
Caring about innocent Palestinians doesn't have to go hand in hand with denying the worst and most brutal massacre of Jewish people since the Holocaust. I'm not going to sit and listen to your human rights rants when despite every proof shown otherwise you still choose to believe an actual isis-like terror organization that intentionally does the worst things imaginable to other human beings and lives on murder, propagenda and incitement. that's fucked up. and the absolute evil and ignorance that people have in them to tell someone who's whole family murdered right in front of them that it just didn't happen is beyond me.

Due to current events my for you tab has been taken over by gddamn antisemites. Like they're going full mask off n then get offended when they get called out on it too.
Guess fighting for human rights is cool and all until Jews are mentioned, then it's too much to ask to be seen as a person and not some fairy tale monster.
