It also seems to have been pretty popular in Powhatan culture to give children the names of others, especially their parents, with the word "little-" proceeding it. According to the Mattaponi, Pocahontas & Kocoum's son's name was "Little Kocoum", Pocahontas was named after her mother & imo might have been called "Little Pocahontas", and one of Pocahontas's brothers was also known as "Little Powhatan" (as in, the Chief, their Father)

Matoaka was the real figures' more formal name, "Pocahontas" was actually more of a childhood nickname of hers. According to Mattaponi oral history (& Pocahontas was mixed Pamunkey/Mattaponi), Pocahontas was also the name of Matoaka's mother, & she got this as a nickname because she shared her mother's playful personality, and then Matoaka changed her name later to "Pocahontas" after her coming of age ceremony.

Many people have adopted the name Matoaka to seperate the historical figure from the mythologized, inaccurate version of her out of respect, especially since that version is often sexualized. Even when the English translated her name, they took Pocahontas to mean "little wanton" (as in, someone who is sexual tease, they said this about a child), when in her original Indigenous language, it meant "she is playful" (as in, she teases and jokes with others in a good-natured, friendly way). I as a DP fan use her names interchangeably.

I can see Matoaka hanging out with a lot of different characters for different reasons (like maybe Belle & Tiana because of their similarity in temperament & maturity, Jasmine for her feisty & desire to explore) but Disney decidedly likes to put Matoaka together with Cinderella a lot, actually, and that's also really cute
