About eight years ago, I finally managed to get more or less permanently over my ten-year-long high school-twilight-obsession and was desperately looking for a new hyperfixation, so I went to the library and borrowed the Silmarillion. I read to the part where Fingon rescues Maedhros, thought "Ah, I bet that's the most popular Silmarillion-ship on AO3 and made it my new OTP (to date the only time a hyperfixation was somewhat planned and wanted). I inhaled the rest of the Silmarillion without paying much intention and enthusiastically threw myself in all the Russingon fanfic I could find.

As a consequence, I have basically all my Silmarillion knowledge from fanfic, tumblr posts and memes and am not entirely sure what is actually written anymore. So today, in preparation for a Luthien&Fingon friendship fix-it AU I really want to write (which would be basically the first thing I've written in eight years) I am going to start reading the Silmarillion again.

I can't wait to see what I misremembered and forgot!

hi hello!! ooo bruce is a tough one. i get a little rambly with this one and honestly i don't think i know what version of bruce i'm even talking about half the time, but i hope my answers are interesting nonetheless.

How I feel about this character

...complicated at best. he's not a character i really think about for himself, if that makes sense? he's relevant because he has close relationships to characters i do care about. this means i usually view him through the lens of his relationship with his kids, and, well. canon bruce i absolutely consider abusive, and i only grow more convinced of this the more comics i read.

while i still do read and enjoy good dad!bruce wayne fics, it's been increasingly difficult for me to write them, particularly if i'm trying to preserve canon in my approach, because his behavior is oft questionable in that canon, and then i struggle to justify him not being as questionable in the fic itself.

bruce is genuinely far more fun to read when he's in a non-batfam related comic, like batman + arsenal. i think my favorite depiction of him is from season 1 of young justice. which is leading me to the conclusion that i like him as a side character with limited interactions with his kids.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

again bruce is not really someone i care for in his own right but in general so i don't really go to bat (lol) for any particular ship, but i am open to most of them!! i think batcat in particular has some cute moments, brutalia is interesting in the 'it was never gonna work out way', and superbat and ghostbat both have enough fan content that i can see the outline of their appeal. superbat fanart in particular is consistently very very good.

bruharvey i think has the most compelling dynamic overall to me but tbh it's all just vibes.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

bruce & leslie, i think?? i don't get a lot of exposure to their dynamic canonically but what little i see is absolutely fascinating. the fact that leslie was almost a mother to him, and her disapproval of his methods, how she helps anyway. the connection between leslie and the waynes and thus to bruce... there's so much unspoken tension here that i don't really get but i enjoy gnawing on nonetheless.

My unpopular opinion about this character

i think he should be funnier. i think we all should appreciate his capability for drama and humor a little bit more. like he gets so grimdark and serious sometimes. stop doing that. start saying out of pocket shit in the flattest tone of voice possible. force people to spend five full seconds processing that it was a joke.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

i think he should die. not necessarily permanently but give us like another 3-5 years with dead bruce? i think it'd do the environment some good. i also wish they would stop making him save the joker. i don't care about that clown.

How I feel about this character

I love him. Fun fact about me is that when I started reading comics I simply arbitrarily determined Tim would be my favorite Robin but it turned out I was correct because I still feel that way. Of course I also project on Tim a lot lol. In general I just think he's a really interesting and fun and complex character and I have really loved getting to know him as he is in the comics.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

I would say my top Tim ship is probably Timber. I think Tim and Steph are cute together when they were together in the comics, but I wouldn't want the back together. I kinda passively ship Timkon.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I'm taking this question to mean a platonic relationship I am very invested in for the character, and so from that understanding I would say that it's Dick and Tim. I'm obsessed with their relationship, the entire backstory of it, the way that Tim inserted himself into Dick's life and figured out his secret identity, and Dick throwing himself into the big brother role for Tim. And I am fascinated by the fact that Tim ends up playing therapist for Dick regarding Bruce in a lot of scenarios. Imo they have some of the best sibling relationship portrayal I've ever seen in media. They are simply the brothers of all time to me and I love their relationship to death.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I think A Lonely Place of Dying supports the idea that Tim has been following / taking pictures of the Batfam for a number of years. Some of those shots of B in the comic I just don't think he could have gotten if this was his first time.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I wish he could get his own permanent identity away from Robin. I do kind of go back and forth on this because I think Tim was pretty clear in his original run that he didn't want to be anything but Robin and when he was done with Robin he would be done. But I think at this point it's silly that he doesn't have his own identity when it seems like he's staying in the game, and especially with Damian being Robin (unless he really stops). I wouldn't even mind if he stuck with the bird theme honestly, just as long as it was his own. Personally though I think he should keep the Red Robin wings if he's going to design a new identity because I think they look very cool.

w/ Fritz: SOULMATES; WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME; "You were a wonderful experience," "You were everything." I am a sucker of pairs that never really get together because of the circumstances, and Gil x Fritz embodies that. Maybe in another life, they would've been a couple, but in another life, they may have never met. Also love the idea of Gil still mourning Fritz all these years and Fritz anticipating and liking that because he wants to be the mortal that Gil remembers the most. Not necessarily healthy, but not that toxic either. Fritz definitely pushed Gil a lot, during the wars that they waged around 1700s, but Gil also pushed Fritz a lot in his youth, telling Fritz to accept his responsibility as king. They're a mess and they know it.

w/ Ivan: A pair of lonely knives that never knew how to be gentle with each other. Ivan thinks of Gil as his first friend even though it's onesided, Gil pities (young) Ivan back then and thinks that the only way to save him was through Catholicism and violence. This pair to me is a little onesided because it's Ivan who keeps chasing after Gil all this time, but never really capturing his heart, while Gil can't stand Ivan and his clinginess but cares for him, just in a distance. If there's any happy ending for them, it would be in modern times because Gil isn't a country anymore (and free to do whatever he wants). But I like the added drama that their respective friends/family may not agree with their relationship (due to history and such)

w/ Tolys: I like that Tolys genuinely dislikes Gil and Gil not really sharing the animosity lmao, i think it's funny. But there's so much that you can spin with these two; them starting out as enemies then reluctant allies under the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, and over the years, Gil grew strong just as Tolys feared, only for him to stumble and fall at the end. I like to think Gil is the one of the few capable of making Tolys show his true emotions (most of the time anger/frustration), and Tolys hates that somewhere deep inside of him he cares for Gil and misses the old days when the three (with Feliks) were living together peacefully. Some days, Tolys thinks he's finally grown to tolerate Gil, and other days, Tolys wants to throttle him. There's no middle ground.

LOVE

w/ Alfred: I like the idea of Alfred developing a puppy crush with Gilbert during his Revolution days. It went away as he grew older, but he still thinks Gil is very attractive (and fits a very specific type of people that he is very romantically attracted to).

w/ Arthur: I like the idea of these brother-mother figures in a situationship, depending on what era it is. I think they do relate a lot with each other with their struggles and likes of raising their younger brothers, but they still do clash a lot. Drinking buddies that go wreck neighborhoods until their partners pick them up.

w/ Ludwig: Whether its platonic or romantic, Ludwig is one of the few people that Gilbert cares and puts above himself. I like to think that Gil could've taken the name 'G3rmany' all for himself, but refused to, seeing Ludwig as an extension/legacy of himself, and so he wishes nothing for Ludwig to succeed cause that means he succeeded himself. Also there's also something about Gil being good only to destroy, but has the capacity to nurture through Ludwig that gets me. The angst potential between the two is off the roof, with two brothers separated and reunited after so many years (and might be separated again, permanently this time)

w/ Gabriel (Templar): Phew, where do I even begin? Childhood friends, first love; catholic guilt, pining that will never be realized. Whether it was Gabriel or Gilbert who was in love, they're not allowed to express it to the other, only pining quietly from afar and through brief and small actions. Gabriel's death impacted Gilbert so much that he started thinking about his mortality, his purpose vs. pre-Gabriel death where he was proud of what he does despite the pain that it causes to him and others. Gilbert still sings Gabriel's songs to these day, even if he doesn't really remember the lyrics well.

LIKE

w/ Lili: I like their aesthetic. That's really much about it. Oh, and the idea that Gil has to deal with Lili's very overprotective brother. Who he is very terrified of.

w/ Feliciano and Lovino: I like the idea of canon Gil liking the two Italies 'cause he thinks they're cute. Can't fault him with that.

w/ Brandenburg: I like that in the JP fandom they're known as the "Eagle couple." A union due to political means, I like to think that Bran eventually grew to care for Gil in his own way, even though he can't be close to him, because he must treat Gil as his subordinate and Gil's purpose to his kingdom and his existence is to support him, keep him alive. Same reasons for Gilbert. In the later years, I think their relationship grew tense, because of mutual fears that either party would "absorb" each other -- which turned out to be true, in the end, when Gilbert would eventually eat Bran and have a more stable immortality. But it's in accordance to Bran's will anyway; Bran already grew too weak as a personification, so it is in Gilbert's hands now to continue what they both have started.

How I feel about this character: I WILL FOREVER AND ALWAYS ADORE ADA CACKLE. I love her, she is so precious to me, you have no idea!!

My non-romantic OTP for this character: So I'm currently getting back into The Worst Witch and their many forms. I think I like the idea of her and Miss Tapioca being good friends! They have a passion for food, and I also like the idea that they both read romance novels and enjoy late night snacks!

My unpopular opinion about this character: Just because the writing was occasionally poor for a children's show does not mean she isn't a great Headmistress! Hecate was right when she said Ada was a force for good and Mildred when she defends Ada in front of the council about how she takes risks and gives people a chance, not only that but a chance to learn and be better. She's the girls' role model and they love her!! <3

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: There are several things I'd wish that happened and since I received two asks for Ada you'll get two answers lol. I would've loved an episode where Ada worried about Hecate burning out . In the '98 series there's a wonderful episode in which Miss Cackle urges HB to join them on their trip so Miss Hardbroom can relax because she's worried she's too focused on work and not enough on her self. (Luckily for me I am an artist so I am in the process of drawing that haha)

Second, I would've loved for her and Agatha to have some kind of happy ending. It hurts rewatching the series when it's very evident that Ada loves her sister even tho she's awful lol and then well you know… Agatha Cackle I miss you every day! TcT In my mind tho, things are different, Agatha is learning to be a better sister and is on permanent house arrest! (Better yet imagine a mini Agatha for her crimes and Ada visits her in a cute little doll house xD)

I love Anders so goddamned much. Awakening Anders and Justice!Anders almost equally. Two slices of a fabulously complicated and messy pie. Anders is a disaster on the run, then a bigger disaster on the run with MORALS and GOALS but still a disaster and permanently altered by a stiff spirit who is fascinated by the world around him-but also appalled by it. I love him I will write sonnets about him. He's terrible he's fantastic.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I never have any basis or understanding of what the fandom at large considers popular or unpopular, but uhmm I guess the Chantry thing. It had to be done. He tried the non-violent route for years and got a pat on the head or ignored at best. Although I imagine that's a popular opinion I have no idea.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

LET HIM GET NEW CATS. That's about as deep as a puddle for me, but I think he should get to carry little kitties in his robes at all times.

So the ask got deleted accidentally, but @autisticharrywells asked me about SANGYAO for toxic ship bingo, and now that I have forcibly dragged them through all 50 episodes, i can at last go off---- you FOOL! you have fallen directly into my trap!!! Muahahaha

I do not know how I ended up here. I don't know WHY I ended up here, except that I'm some kind of masochist.

Like I was all prepared to be 100% team wangxian otp and read all the fic and shit, and I started out so promising. (And I do love them...) But then. Then. That little demon brought a bird to class. And the other little demon protected him during the Wen thing. The stabbing ?? The warning as Meng Yao was leaving to huaisang DESPITE actively bleeding. The pleading to Mingjue to let Meng Yao stay despite no evidence of Huaisang ever really standing up to question NMJ decisions before like that (esp in front of other clan members) (other than with things like blowing off Sabre practice) THE FAN CLENCH. MY HEART. And THEN they committed their various atrocities during which the no turning back point was hit for them so many times and yet i do believe the remorse was there and so too was some affection still, twisted as it was by time and hatred and isolation and i... I just....I slipped?

There's so much there!!! (and please keep in mind I'm mostly talking from a cql/the untamed perspective, though I have seen the donghua and am aware of book cannon, I just kinda prefer the show as the version I take to heart (with some notable jgy or Huaisang based exceptions bc i'm nothing if not willing to excuse their pretty boy mid-divorce war crimes))

These two have such a deep shared history that spans the entirety of the cannon, and their relationship is extra fascinating on rewatch as you can more clearly track the downward spiral of events.

There's also the tragedy that it COULD have been avoided, was so close to being avoided several times bc JGY is not really EVIL, (any one who says this is being super reductive imo) but he does preserve himself above all other things and people through sheer learned necessity (with the exception of xichen and isn't that also a beautiful part of sangyao tragedy?? That so clearly xichen and JGY were destined to be the tragic counterparts to wwx and lwj's relationship not nhs and jgy? That xichen was the only thing JGY ever sacrificed true parts of himself for, that huaisang knows that he could have done the same for him, but didn't? Because there was too much history with Mingjue to let it go, and also bc the devotion or affection he held for huaisang when they were both on the mountain never surpassed that point. He had too much caution to truly be himself, and Huaisang, I don't think could ever truly see past JGYs status in the way that xichen was able to since he served as his big brother's vice general and also his appointed companion to a degree. ) And where does that leave huaisang? Where he always is. ALONE. On a mountain he never fit in on in the first place. Where does it leave JGY? Stuck in a permanant customer service role to his awful father and branded further untrustable as a spy. Humilated and broken down to the point of just. So much murder. (Some of which I still maintain tain as a public service coughcoughJinGuangShancoughcough)

They are so much alike and yet so different in such key aspects, that I also have to believe they were meant to act as parallels to one another, just like wwx and jgy, or xichen and wangji. The planning and manipulation they both do (in their own ways bc i am in the camp that while huaisang is smarter than the average bear, smarter than he ever wants to let on bc it makes his life easier, he isnt able to truly outpace JGY's ability to craft a situation. What he is good at is manipulating people and social situations, and adapting his outlined plan extremely well on the fly- with the exception of maybe xichen. I dont think he meant to truly hurt xichen like that. I think that was a natural panic that if JGY was allowed to live it would mean Huaisang actually had to die at some point instead, Though I do also think perhaps there is some lingering resentment there that leads to it to bc why is JGY worth pardoning after his crimes to xichen? Doesn't this mean he inherently valued JGY over Mingjue, over Huaisang’s own pain and anguish? (he did, but not maliciously, lans are love blind we know this))

The tragedies of nie huaisang are inextricably linked to the tragedies of jgy and vice versa! Technically, huaisang, as a bastard of the clan leader with one of his concubines, (I think that's right) should be discounted as a noble son, esp considering his weaker nature and lack of talents dictated to be valuable by the standards of the nie clan. He should have the same status really or at least a status more closely similar to jgy who is constatly looked down on because of his mother's position and bastard status, despite his constant hyper competency, as we see so vividly. And yet Huaisang is given title and rank and (some) respect where JGY gets trodden into the mud and shit of life, even as he succeeds in raising the jin clans success through his actions and talents. Meanwhile, huaisang is thought to be a useless leech by others, untalented in the ways of ruling or anything that's deemed an actually respectable skill by clan leader standards. A pathetic little dude who doesn't know how to do anything, and yes, he does get cast as a headshaker in the eyes of the people, but it's never his background thats brought into question as to why he might be failing. It's considered a result of his personality, not his upbringing. And even then he doesn't get shit talked as much as JGY does. Huaisang has all the privilege that JGY was never afforded, and does that color JGYs view a bit? Does it make him just bitter enough that, when combined with his father’s looming threats and taunts, and Mingjue’s inability to ever let anything JGY does go, that he's willing to hurt huaisang in such a way, even just as a byproduct of his mission?

Huaisang’s plan is successful, bc people discount him as incompetent, yes, but also bc they still see him as a noble, as someone of enough inherent value, diminished though it may be, that he weilds that influence even when playing the fool. JGY doesn't get that respect even at his height of his power and competency as a ruler.

They are, neither of them, strong cultivators. But that factor only really affects JGY bc it means he has to fight even harder for acceptance and validation. Huaisang also gets the luxury of CHOOSING not to be a strong cultivator. Because his position in life IS secure, he can slack off. He is allowed to try his hardest to avoid the fate of his family and do his utmost not to cultivate in that manner. Which I think, too, causes some of the resentment. On both sides. Huaisang never has to work a day in his life, has barely any expectations to live up to and still gets the respect Meng Yao is constantly robbed of. And for huaisang- On top of killing his brother via musically-induced, full-bodied rage embolism, JGY is now also the reason that huaisang is thrust into a position he was entirely unprepared for way before he was supposed to be.

And we know, we KNOW that JGY is responsible for so many of Huaisang’s pretty little things. His beloved indulgences granted not by his own brother, but by his doting san-ge. Things that got burned or destroyed by Mingjue simplu for the fact that a) they were from JGY and B) they are not the type of things NMJ cosidereds respectabke hobbies or skills. A large number of his fans and painting supplies are gifts from JGY, and he stood up for and encouraged those hobbies against the person he probably fears the most at that point, Mingjue (even if he's already actively trying to kill him by then). And huaisang seemed genuinely pleased that JGY had found acceptance and was getting what he (thought he) wanted. The friendship and affection was real, just not near strong enough to withstand the crimes of the other.

And oh boy that divorce was rough and bloody and beautiful and tragic and I just love the messy nature of the relationship, how deep and how twisted it went and became. And i think, right up until the very end, JGY didn't truly want to believe that Huaisang was capable of doing this to him, I don't think he ever wanted to hurt huaisang again the way he had to when he killed Mingjue. Use him? Maybe. But not in a malicious way, not by his standards.

I am happy to read any sangyao content I can get, however! I love reading about them as companions on the mountain, growing together, bonding. Maybe young and in love? I love reading the gradual drifting apart. The years they schemed and used each other. The final divorce. And what comes after. Or what could never be. Any content, I will take, and it depends on where in cannon we are that a particular square is filled in.

Jgy had to fight for both acceptance and sheer survival, and huaisang never really had to do either. Except maybe during the ~10 years of the gap when Huaisang had figured him out, but was pretending to be useless to achieve his ends. You could argue the mindset that aside from just avenging his DaGe, he was also concerned about his own survival bc what if he became an Inconvienience instead of just the annoyance he was playing up to be? If he actually stood in Guanyao's way? It would be much easier to take him out than Mingjue, realistically. But what would be that threshold to have JGY actually do anything? Are Huaisang’s histrionics and uselessness useful to him? Or a result of guilty indulgence? Or left over fondness from a ti.e they were so close? Some combo of all? Who can say and I fucking love that uncertainty about them

Saying all that, these two are the poster child for OTP I don't want to end up together in Canon, lol. Unless it's one of the many time travel fix it aus, they simply have too much history and shared issues and rage between them to ever make sense working out. But their stories are so incomplete without the other, they are inexorably linked, and I just think they're neat!

(Please don't come for me cql fans. im sure I've misunderstood or posted an opinion that's utterly debatable on here. But like, also. I'm tired and I love them and I don't care.)

I have more to say about them that you'll probably get to hear at some point when we talk, but for now, they have BROKEN MY BRAIN.
