Sect Leader Yao: *loudly ranting about WWX being evil and how he shouldn’t have ‘been invited’ as if the man hadn’t been forcefully summoned like a demon of some sort*
Nie Mingjue: …Sect Leader Yao?
SLYao: -what?
Nie Mingjue: *pointing down* Your robes are on fire.
SLYao: *runs out of the hall screaming when he can’t get it put out*
Other leaders: *trying to figure out if WWX was the one that set him on fire*
Wei Wuxian: *sitting behind a shielding array, both stuck and not wanting to tempt someone to attack him, actively hiding a confused A-Yaun behind his skirts* :)
A-Yaun: ??:)??
Jiang Yanli: *eagerly showing him Jin Ling and probably thinks WWX and JC managed this so WWX could be at his 100 day celebration, isn’t gonna ask where they can get in trouble*
Jiang Cheng: *thinking exactly the same thing but about Yanli and WWX, showing off his nice new hair pin Yanli got him*
Jin Zixuan: *just happy this is less horrible than he expected*
Lan Wangji: *giving WWX blinks of affection and love*
Wei Wuxian: :)
Nie Mingjue: …but who set Sect Leader Yao on fire?
Lan Xichen: I don’t know, but it’s so much more peaceful now :)
Meng Yao: *appears at NMJ’s elbow, holding hands with NHS and looking pleased* I found that array in Jin Guangshan’s office :) it’ll wear off in about five hours. They’ll be so excited when they realize they can pass him random objects through the shield :)
Nie Huaisang: I set Sect Leader Yao’s robes on fire :)
Nie Mingjue: Ohhh you two are just so cute, I am giving you both presents when we get home.
NHS & MY: :D

meng yao: (watches huaisang break kitkats across the bars instead of between the bars to hand some to a now-freaked out acquaintance)
meng yao: (once the other person is gone) why do you do that with everyone who's not me? not that i *want* you to, it's creepy, i'm just curious.
huaisang: 'cause if i do it enough times, they'll quit asking me to share.
meng yao: ... (realizes this means he's the only one huaisang doesn't mind sharing with) o-oh...

For the "Alliances" theme, what about a sangyao arranged marriage where it's other people's idea and they fall in love after getting married?
"I'm sorry," had been the first thing his da-ge said when the negotiation party had returned from Lanling.
When their father had agreed to a betrothal arrangement with Jin Guangshan, pretty much no one in the sect believed it would actually hold. After all, it had become very apparent that Jin-furen had no interest in making the effort to have a second child with a husband who was probably already a carrier of an unfathomable number of intimate diseases by the time their son had been born, and it had been just as apparent that Jin Guangshan would never consider any of the numerous bastards he'd sired across the jianghu to be worth even half a moment of attention.
But, apparently, he'd found this 'Meng Yao' to be passable enough to use as a game piece, and had sent a demand for the agreement to be honored.
There had been some alterations to the terms, as Nie Huaisang found when he forced himself to read through all of the polite legalese.
Though he would still be the one to wear the veil, ostensibly taking on the wife role, he would generously be allowed to remain at home with his da-ge, with Meng Yao being registered as marrying into the Nie sect and moving to the Unclean Realms instead of the reverse.
Thus ridding Jin Guangshan of an unwanted son while still giving him a claim to the dowry.
The most auspicious date listed was probably the most egregious lie in all of it. Not even a whole month away, it gave the Jin sect an excuse not to throw a properly-designed wedding banquet while still letting them show off how rich they were in that they could still make a lavish party out of their cast-offs.
All in all, it was a blatant spit in the eye for both his brother and his future husband, and the only reason Nie Huaisang could see for his brother and the elders to have agreed to such rudeness was to keep him out of Lanling and out of Jin Guangshan's hands.
He figured would have to be better-behaved for his brother for awhile as thanks for taking such a beating to his pride.
Even if it meant, ugh, letting himself be dragged to saber training.
But the new terms of agreement honestly made him feel more sorry for his betrothed than for himself. Short of just getting rid of him like he'd gotten rid of all the others, Jin Guangshan couldn't have made his haughty disdain for his son -for everyone involved, really, but especially his son- more obvious, and unless Meng Yao was a complete idiot, he had to be aware of how little his father cared.
Well.
If he was going to make the best of this garbage fire of an arrangement, he was going to need to know more about his husband-to-be than his name and who his father was.
---
It was almost time for their wedding party to leave for Lanling, so once the maids had finished fussing over his hair and makeup, Nie Huaisang read the notes from his spies one more time, then tucked them into the sleeve of his innermost robe.
As the carriage made its way along the road, he turned the information over in his mind, letting options spool out in front of him like threads ready to be pulled taut by the loom.
None of the spies had had any objections to Meng Yao as a person. They'd all found him soft-spoken, gentle, and clever; courteous even to servants, and pleasant to look at. He was just beginning cultivational training, but was dedicated and a quick study.
All in all, an ideal spouse, really.
But every one of them had painted an unflattering picture of his heritage. His father had been a regular customer of a courtesan in a brothel near the border between the Jiang and Wen sects, who'd suddenly found excuses to stop visiting when she bore a child a year to the day before Jin Zixuan had been born.
What a mess.
No wonder Jin Guangshan had wanted so badly to make use of him.
No wonder Jin Guangshan had wanted so badly to get rid of him.
But Nie Huaisang could see the potential that Jin Guangshan was willing to squander. If Meng Yao proved willing to play along, they could make it so that he'd be worth more than the bride price Qinghe Nie had paid in return for him.
---
Even under the veil, Nie Huaisang could see the stiffness in his betrothed's posture.
Though Meng Yao was clearly doing his best to remain composed, a polite smile painted on his otherwise-neutral expression, he still gave off an air of a man awaiting execution, or a fox with its leg caught in a snare.
As they knelt side by side to begin the ceremony, Nie Huaisang used the heavy fabric of their sleeves to hide when he laced their fingers together and gave the hand he held a gentle squeeze.
Meng Yao started the smallest bit in surprise, then... relaxed. Not enough that he stopped looking trapped, but enough that it was evident he'd appreciated the gesture. And even losing just that tiny sliver of iron in his spine already made him look more attractive.
This was going to work out for them.
Nie Huaisang was sure of it.
(Nie Huaisang would make sure of it.)

doomed by the narrative and by each other but not by ME
[ID: a small illustration of meng yao and nie huaisang in front of a large entrance leading to a courtyard. meng yao is carrying scrolls in his arms. he is looking back bashfully at nie huaisang, who has come up behind him and wrapped his arms around him. both are smiling, and nie huaisang's eyes are closed. the sky is orange and the lighting is warm and cozily dimmed. leaves flutter around and the sky sports a few golden clouds. /end ID]

Like all things in Nie Huaisang's life, it started with Da-ge.
When killing Jin Guangyao and causing the heartbreak of Lan Xichen didn't help, didn't bring back his Da-ge nor gave him happiness or peace, at least - he tried something else.
The thing about sacrificing one, and alienating the other source of his to demonic cultivation was that it made everything way harder than it should have been - but he was always a resourceful little demon. Just as easily as he defeated the mastermind behind the murder of his Da-ge, he found himself back in time, when Jin Guangyao was still called Meng Yao and Da-ge was still a living, lovely little ball of rage and fierceness.
It was a strange experience, to be older than his brave and strong and talented Da-ge, but... he would always be his spoiled little didi. It wouldn't take long to get back to being the pampered little Second Master of Qinghe. Except...
He couldn't allow himself to be that lazy and shallow as he was. His Da-ge would. Not. Die. Not under his watch.
He was ready to kill Jin Guangyao, before the man could lay even a finger (or a faulty note) on his brother, but-
The man he met at the first time he opened his eyes in his past - in his new present -, was Meng Yao. His favorite non-Da-ge person, his friend, his first (second, if he wanted to be honest) crush. Da-ge's deputy, whose presence was essential in the daily lives of Qinghe. Nie Huaisang's plans changed in the minute he heard his A-Yao's soft words of concern.
"Is Second Master okay? Should I call for the healer?"
It was real.
Ever since he realized who killed his beloved brother, he questioned everything he knew about Meng Yao. He questioned his care, his love, his friendliness. But it was all real. His A-Yao really cared about him.
Maybe not Jin Guangyao. But Meng Yao did. And that care was what saved him.
"No, it's okay! It was just a quick dizziness, but everything is good now. And how many times more should I tell you that it's A-Sang?! A-Sang! A-Yao is so cruel to his A-Sang," he pouted, and the helpless adoration in the other man's eyes was so clear to him now that he didn't understand how past him had failed to notice it.
"Once more, probably," Meng Yao sassed, his tiny smile and cute little dimples hidden behind his sleeves.
"So cruel..." Nie Huaisang muttered, hiding his own smile behind a fan.
"Sect Leader sent me to tell you to get ready for the arrival of Young Master Lan," A-Yao said, taking Nie Huaisang's hairbrush in his hand to tame the unruly hair, and the younger boy allowed it, deep in his thoughts.
Meng Yao had to stay. Qinghe couldn't afford losing him right now, Jin Guangshan didn't deserve him, Nie Mingjue needed him at least until after the war, and Nie Huaisang... well, he wanted him. But in the past, as soon as Meng Yao had a better option, he took it, be it the adoration of Lan Xichen, the acceptance of Jin Guangshan or the opportunity to become Sect Leader. Meng Yao would do everything to be as close to power as he could, to be acknowledged and respected.
Nie Huaisang couldn't give that to him. He was just the heir, and saving Nie Mingjue was the whole reason for doing the whole time travel thing. He was not powerful enough. On the other hand, he would never allow Nie Mingjue to fall for Meng Yao, as his brother would never survive that relationship. Allowing Jin Guangshan to accept Meng Yao into the Jin Sect was absolutely out of the question. But-
But.
Hm.
That might work.
Lan Xichen had fallen for Meng Yao before. It was inevitable, but it was not enough. They would never do anything with their feelings; Xichen-ge was too Lan for anything, and Meng Yao would always feel inferior. And just the two of them... that would not guarantee Nie Mingjue's survival. (Hah! On the contrary, it would make the whole murder easier.) But!
But...
Lan Xichen always had a soft spot for Nie Huaisang. With some carefully timed helpless tears, some grateful hugs that last longer than appropriate, some flattering words and carefully cultivated image of being soft and sweet and just spicy enough to not be seen as a younger brother, it would be so easy to seduce the First Jade.
A-Yao already adored him, and if he had the means, the opportunity and the incentive to have Nie Huaisang as his, he would take it. Before, he never started anything with Huaisang because being the husband of the Second Young Master was not attractive enough. But being the spouse of the heir of Qinghe AND the heir - soon-to-be Sect Leader - of Lan was a completely different thing. Having connections to not one but two of the Big Sects, being Consort Lan, the husband of a man who would be indulgent to all of his manipulations and power games would be a temptation not even Meng Yao could resist.
Jing Guangshan had to die soon, though. It would be a shame to kill his not-yet-husband because he thought it was a good idea to suck up to his walking sexually transmitted disease of a father.

Mind still stuck on jgy and nhs putting aside their animosity to make WangXian happen
It's modern au and nmj is not dead but jgy and nhs hold the last life's memories and ahaksksks yeah they hate each other.
But there's more important stuff waiting to happen. Like WangXian. It's the OTP. We need to make it happen.
NHS: they are so fucking stupid yao-ge. How was it easier to make it happen when wwx was dead???
JGY: let me show you how it's done. *Continues to fail for the next 5 attempts* what the fuck is wrong with them??? A-sang how do you deal with this???
LXC: oh they are getting along very well.
NMJ: *pretty sure he just saw them try to stab each other at least once today but has no proof cause they smiled at him sweetly* .... yeah.

Huaisang and Jin Guangyao dressed for pride parade and 🌈 just being happy? 🙏❤
hello anon! your prompt brought me joy. thank you!! they deserve it very badly (and I’ve always imagined they would absolutely bond over their mutual queerness in unsaid ways)
hence! I present you with: pride at Jin Lin Tai. listen. Lianfang-zun knows how to throw a party. I had so much fun with the details— and yes, I stand by the Sparks Amidst Snow dyed rainbow colours. since when does jgy do things by halves?
