Characters: Lan Wangji x Xue Yang

Submission 1: They’re kinda like dark mirrors of each other if you think about it. They both lost the object of their obsession to self-destruction of some kind. They both refuse to move on from said obsession and have built themselves into monuments mourning them (Xue Yang with his preservation of Xiao Xingchen’s body and the way he literally impersonates Xiao Xingchen and Lan Wangji branding himself and going around dressed for mourning). They have each taken in what physical remnants of their obsession remain (Xue Yang turning Song Lan into a fierce corpse and holding onto Yi City and Lan Wangji taking in and raising Sizhui). Each of them admire the other’s object of obsession to some extent (Xue Yang idolizes Wei Wuxian for his cultivation method and Lan Wangji praised Xiao Xingchen for his ideals and sense of justice). This is to say I could totally see these guys recognizing their common grief and latching onto each other as a result. Doing mutual proxyfucking or some shit

Submission 2: Think about it: Xiao Xingchen is dead. Wei Ying is dead. And they find someone who's definitely not the same... but close enough if they close their eyes and pretend.

Xue Yang Rare Pair Week Day 1: Treat Ship: Xue Yang x Jin Guangyao Rating: T Summary: Jin Guangyao thinks Xue Yang deserves a little treat.

“Any progress?” Jin Guangyao hates coming to Xue Yang’s self named corpse garden. The resentment itches like spiderwebs on the face, or a drop of water down the spine. 

Xue Yang for his part looks comfortable, Golden surcoat discarded to leave him in a bloodied inner robe, hardly appropriate. But Xue Yang has never cared about those things, the shameless little creature. And even if he did, there's no one here to see. “Wanna see?” Xue Yang pries a long black nail from the corpse’s heart with a sick wet sound. He holds it up for Jin Guangyao to inspect. “This is to suppress the corpse's will. The more presence, the more resentment, the fiercer the corpse. But that makes them hard to control.”

He’s explained all this before. The nail is a new development. Jin Guangyao only half listens to Xue Yang’s enthusiastic babbling about the function of his nails, looking around the dim room. 

Dustmotes drift in the single patch of gold sunlight from the window. Two platters of food, mostly untouched, sit on another work table. Xue Yang’s eyes are ringed with shadows and fever bright. 

The thing about assets is they must be maintained, carefully taken care of until they are no longer needed. He glances again at Xue Yang’s uncombed hair, scraped back into one sloppy tie. Does he shake a little, as he stands there talking, gesturing around with bloody trembling fingers? Jin Guangyao’s mouth pinches, disappointed in himself. He’s been neglecting this aspect of his duty. 

“Why don’t,” Jin Guangyao interrupts. Xue Yang blinks at him. “You get cleaned up, and I'll take you out for a treat.”

Xue Yang blinks again, eyes huge and owlish. He waves his bloody nail. “I thought you wanted to see progress.”

Jin Guangyao lets himself drift closer, to reach out. Xue Yang flinches back from his fingers, but dutifully holds still, so Jin Guangyao can rub his thumb over the plump apple of his cheek, wiping a smear of black ichor. “You’ve made good progress.” He assures. They both know this is untrue. “So you deserve a treat.”

“Thought you didn't want me out in my Jin colours.” Xue Yang pouts now. 

“I don't want you misbehaving in your Jin colours.” Jin Guangyao corrects. “But you’re going to be with me. And you’re going to behave.” He doesn't make it a question. Xue Yang bristles, a wild thing, and settles again as Jin Guangyao’s hand finds the back of his neck, squeezing once, playing in the wispy hairs that have escaped his tie. 

The nail rolls to the work table next to the corpse. Xue Yang works his knuckles, flexing his hands. He needs to be fitted for a new brace soon. “What are you buying me, Yao-ge?”

“What would you like?”

Xue Yang pretends to think. His smile is bright and cheeky. “Tangyuan?”

“Tangyuan it is,” Jin Guangyao confirms, warm and indulgent. Xue Yang whoops. “Now go get cleaned up.” He doesn’t need to repeat himself, Xue Yang is already stripping out of his bloodied robes on the way out, whistling tunelessly. 

Jin Guangyao takes a moment to wipe his hand on a silk kerchief, embroidered with peonies. Xue Yang’s skin is cooler to the touch. His fingers tingle remembering the sensation. He will treat Xue Yang gently, carefully, encouraging behaviours he wants repeated, excising those he wants stopped, like sharpening a blade into the perfect weapon. Good assets need to be taken care of, if they are meant to last forever.

for the ask game: xueyao! ship it or not?

it's complicated!!! should be an answer for this meme, just for me, but I guess loosely speaking I'll say ship it (with some caveats, mostly that I ship it in the traditional sense exclusively as friends with benefits, and I'm much more attached to them as a platonic relationship)

What made you ship it? the whole dynamic between them! the partners in crime aspect but also the way that they are so very different. also the fact that xue yang knows jin guangyao with a depth and thoroughness that few people do, the good and the bad, and while I wouldn't say he understands him that's still something that I find fun to explore.

What are your favorite things about the ship? as with so many of my favorite dynamics, I think what particularly draws me about the relationship between these two (whatever form it takes) is the parallels/foils between them as two characters who are both outsiders in cultivation society, both seen as low and dirty by others, but who have responded to that very differently. where jin guangyao strives for acceptance and status, xue yang rebels by rejecting norms of society and all external judgment. and at the same time, xue yang makes jin guangyao laugh and offers a kind of unconditional acceptance that's decidedly scarce (and is willing to go to bat for him, in his own way), and jin guangyao offers xue yang a respect that pretty much nobody else does. love that for both of them.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I feel like there are two unpopular-ish opinions I have about this ship, though as usual I don't have a great metric for what is actually "unpopular", but based on what I see around about the relationship between these two: the first is that I think jin guangyao genuinely liked xue yang - he wasn't just a job or a duty he was forced to deal with, but actually at least sort of a friend, if one who is (as friends sometimes are) frustrating at times. this isn't to say that jin guangyao actually, like, approves of everything xue yang does (I think there are many ways in which they both think the other is profoundly, shall we say, misguided; their approach to society is almost diametrically opposed), but I think he does like him and, at least to a certain extent, enjoy his company.

on the flip side of that opinion, I do think that jin guangyao meant to have xue yang killed. I can see the justification behind saying that he didn't - that he just ushered him out the back door and someone else attacked him later; it certainly does fit with jin guangyao's modus operandi with other people that are inconvenient to him (sisi, notably) - but I think that jin guangyao would see that as too much of a risk, and xue yang himself as too much of a loose cannon, to turn him loose like that. I think he'd be sad about it, and reluctant, but ultimately the calculus comes down on the side of it being necessary in order to start over as chief cultivator and disassociate himself from his father's less popular actions.

You are very right, that's another ship where anyone who is mean to jiggy will at the very least lose their tongue and that's canon :D

Villainous friends are so precious too, there's just something about these two gremlins plotting their silly little demonic cultivation shenanigans together. And I think it's freaking hilarious how the whole thing feels like JGY sees them as reluctant colleagues, while XY thinks they are besties :')

The only thing stopping this from being higher in my JGY ships ranking list is the fact that what this little guy craves just as much as acceptance and love (or even more) is safety and security in his position among the gentry, and that's something XY can't really give him. If anything, he is the one bringing the political influence to their thing
