I would be remiss on Mother’s Day if I didn’t honor Dr Mamie not just for being a loving (and fun) mother and grandmother, but for her power & the power of her example - the #texas women’s hall of famer, the math/chemistry major and education PhD, her dedicated efforts to preserve the history of Black Texans, her love & leadership roles in @akasorority1908 , her hanging out at a @thelinksinc book event with my @harvardlaw friend @lawrenceotisgraham , her love of teaching, her being the only one competent to help her granddaughter with her math homework, and the seeds of her leadership skills on display in high school, where she was valedictorian at Lincoln High School in #Dallas and where she and her best friend Easter Irene Hall ran the show. #mom https://www.instagram.com/p/COqKtOCH9gA/?igshid=enprp50uhaor

Happy Juneteenth! #Repost @thelinksinc ・・・ #Juneteenth Today marks the oldest known celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation, which granted that “all persons held as slaves...shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free,” was originally signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1,1863, it took two and a half years for the news to reach the deepest parts of the former Confederacy in Texas. June 19, 1865, or Juneteenth, marked the official end of slavery. Today we reflect with pride on how far African-Americans have come. And we celebrate the resilience of our ancestors, including the Juneteenth Committee Of East Woods Park in Austin, Texas, pictured here on June 19, 1900.
