Droplets- a love letter

(THIS CONTAINS POTENTIAL SPOILERS IF YOU INTEND TO READ THIS FIC SO BEWARE!!)

okay so I've been thinking about Droplets by @the-prophet-lemonade (Lucy) it's more than just a summer read. It's like we're getting into the raw emotional diary entries of this kid Jean right on the edge of adulthood. We're getting this really intimate look at what's going on inside his head, not just what's happening around him.

The thing that really jumps out at me right from the beginning is the pool. It's always there, looming large, almost like it's a character itself. You can tell it's not just someplace to cool off for Jean. It represents something. Something more. The way he reacts to it- "The water is cold, the way it laps against my ankle-bones literally the most disgusting thing I've ever felt" Intense much? Like it's just water. But for Jean, it clearly goes deeper. It's like the pool with its reflections and depths, which are like a metaphor for what's going on inside of him, and it's not always reflecting back something pretty. It reminds me of the feeling of when you're really drawn to something but it also kinda scares you a little. Like the hesitation right before you jump into the deep end. That push and pull is something I think we all grapple with, especially at that age when you're trying to figure yourself out. Who you are what you want. It's a lot. Speaking of complicated though, let's talk about Jean's parents for a bit. It's like whiplash, he's super affectionate with his mom one minute, even when he's frustrated. But with his dad, it's all tension. There's walking on eggshells. It's this unspoken baggage between them( despite us knowing whats really going on). It really makes you think about how families- especially our relationships with our parents, can shape how we interact with everyone else. Like are we ever really free of that need for approval? Especially from our dads- it's like no matter what you do it's never enough. Or maybe that's just me projecting. But I do think it's a pretty universal experience. That longing for validation from the people who are supposed to love us unconditionally. And when it's not there or we perceive it's not there it can really mess you up. Speaking of messing things up: enters Marco, the pool cleaner. Talk about shaking things up.

Marco just strolls in and upends Jean's whole world, he's so different from anyone else in Jean's life, so comfortable in his own skin. You can feel that energy, that difference is really unsettling Jean. in a good way though! Marco is this catalyst forcing Jean to confront those insecurities we were talking about. It's like the line where Jean says "He knows exactly where to dig to pull me out of the hole I've dug for myself over the years because I haven't yet learned how to drag myself out alone." Dang Jean! Tell us how you really feel. He sees something in Marco he wants, that strength, but he's also kinda terrified of it. (again- the hesitation before jumping) And of course, that's where the tension comes in. You can feel it practically radiating off the page. Those stolen glances, the awkward encounters. It's electric. And Lucy milks it for all its worth trust me. Just when you think it can't be more intense we get hit with the bombshell with Jean's dad! Don't even get me started on the dad., talk about a recipe for disaster- finding out your father has been unfaithful. Especially at that age when you're already questioning everything. and then feeling the need to keep this heavy secret hidden for the better of the family but it still all comes out, AND to discover it wasn't even actually hidden in the first place. Like, it's one minute Jean is trying to wrap his head around these new feelings for Marco, feelings he doesn't even know what to do with, and then his whole family falling apart. The internal struggle of feelings and the external family drama being paired together with the rest of the plot?? OOF. Jean has been craving honesty and connection and then his dad, and in a way his mom too, comes and BOOM. Blows up any chance at that, at least when it comes to his family. It's interesting how Lucy uses that to mirror what's going on with Jean internally. talk about identity crisis. Classic coming-of-age stuff. Your insides are a mess and suddenly the world outside decides to match! Like the universe is tryna tell you something. and the scene when Jean finds his mom crying in the kitchen?? my heart breaks for both of them. You can see those walls Jean has built up start to crumble- like he saw his own pain reflected back at him. It was a turning point for sure, he realized at that moment he can't keep hiding. Not if he wants to connect with anyone. Even his own mother. It's heartbreaking but also really powerful. Makes you think, about how even when families are messy when they disappoint us, they can still teach us so much about, I dunno, love and forgiveness, all that stuff. How our own experiences, especially with our parents, shapes what we think those things even are. Love and loyalty are different for everyone. You can feel that… that need for honesty, for something real, sort of bleeding over into how Jean acts with Marco. Seeing his mom break down almost gives him permission to be vulnerable in other parts of his life too. And we really see it with Marco, the way Jean starts to open up and lets his guard down- it's risky, sure! But also brave. Super brave. Letting someone see your flaws and all… that's what makes it real. That's when their connection becomes something more, something deeper. It makes you think about what real intimacy really is. Letting someone see past those walls we build up into the messy stuff we try to keep hidden. And that's scary to be seen like that, especially if you've been hurt before. But what Jean is figuring out is that the payoff can be HUGE.

And then Jean and his art. It's like his superpower- all those emotions, those desires that can't come to words he puts on the page. Like, Lucy is using those little sketches as like a metaphor, each one a little piece of Jean! And as he starts to share them you see him changing- growing even! The art is how he figures himself out. Makes sense of all that swirling around inside. Art can be powerful like that. Helps you understand yourself and when you share it you're sharing a part of yourself it's like that saying "Art is not what you see but what you make others see." In Jean, he's making us see a lot. About ourselves, about the world

So we've got this coming-of-age story, complicated family dynamics, a romance that sneaks up on you. But it's more than that- Droplets is like this deep dive into what it means to be human. The relationships, the vulnerability, that journey of figuring out who you are. This fic makes you think about the droplets in your own life, those little moments, those feelings you get, and the people you meet. They all fit together and make you who you are. To reference another saying "life is a journey, not a destination" Even when things get messy, even when it's hard. You can find beauty in the unexpected. In those little moments that make up life so pay attention to those droplets today. The small stuff, the big stuff. It all matters. Cause it's all part of YOUR story. That is the beauty of Droplets

Three stories detailing how Isak and Even come back together after a break-up. Like to think of them as long meditations on grief, reconciliation, and second chances. Isak and Even are written so well they feel like a perfect version of canon, just a few years in the future.

Summary:

It really does take a village to raise a Jim.

The members of the Kelvin's crew watch over Jim as much as he lets them.

One of the most memorable fics I've ever read. I think about the funeral scene all the time. Jim's realization of what Sakel did is so satisfying. Plus, secret genius Jim and Tarsus IV are my kryptonite when it comes to Star Trek fic.

Retrograde by Pinkninja (The Old Guard - Joe/Nicky - Time Traveler's Wife AU)

Summary: Nicky's lives and deaths are different. He is unstuck from time - at every death he revives into a different point in his life. Each time he is struck down he wonders, will he awaken to deserts and swords? Will it be gunshots in cities? Joe and Nicky build a fractured life together, falling in love across two different sets of centuries, then patiently waiting for the other to fall in love too. He meets the rest of their little family out of order, but they still build a family around Nicky's involuntary time-traveling.

The amount of times I've read this is kinda wild. I don't even like The Time Traveler's Wife, but the concept works so well for immortal beings.

Summary: Reincarnation story set in 1940. In Albion's hour of need Arthur is brought back from his rest in Avalon. He learns that the world is at war, and that the enemies have dark magic at their disposal. With the help of the mysterious Vril society the invaders are about to gain air superiority and become unstoppable. Only Merlin could fight the new magical threat, but Merlin has been missing for a long time.

Cool take on the King that was Promised mythology, and immortal Merlin.

Malasadas for the Healing Soul by thoughtreflex (Hawaii Five-O - Gen)

Summary: The one where Danny has a secret, people discover this secret, Steve gets hurt, Danny gets hurt, Steve goes all ninja-possessive-SEAL, and Chin and Kono have to break out the BAMF routine to try and fix things. Not a typical Five-O month at all.

Actually just did a reread of this one. It's so good. The buildup of Danny's secret is one of my favorite parts of this story.

Summary: Harry and Draco have been falling into bed on and off again since the last election five years ago, much to the amusement--and financial gain--of their circle of friends. But when Harry agrees to work with Draco to put Kingsley Shacklebolt into the Minister's office, they can't work side-by-side again every day and sleep together; that would be courting disaster. Wouldn't it?

The dynamic between Draco and Harry in this one is so sharp. But what I like most about it how good of friends they actually are.

Series Summary: Angel had thought that he'd done the Detached Misanthropic Vampire thing pretty well. He lived alone, his only "friends" were other vampires and demons, and his only enemy was Human Attachment. He saved if it was convenient for his conscience, and he went back to drinking human blood. His scowl was perfect.

After 200 years, he'd practically succeeded in fading away from humanity.

Practically.

This literally does not get enough love. A fully realized series that takes place 200 years in the future, full of OCs, but it's still Angel being the lone wolf who's heart slowly melts into caring about other people. and it's great. Bonus: The same author co-authors another series called Blood and Time, which is a Doctor Who/Angel crossover, that ALSO crosses over with their Interaction series ocassionally.

Personal thoughts on chapter below cut (Contains Spoilers)

To start off, I'd just like to say how much of a masterpiece I think this chapter is! The confusion, the stress, the lore drop is all so magnificent!!

Draxum gestured at his empty cup of tea, where the poison dried in its ceramic belly. “As little as possible? Or the most efficient amount?”

I really enjoyed this little distinction. Leo is well known for being lazy, though when you look at his actions in Rottmnt, he always seems to know what's going on (for example, guessing Big Mama was bad news way before his brothers did) and always seems to understand the random things his brothers are shouting about. A person who is lazy, is a person who simply doesn't do stuff. What Leo is doing, isn't laziness, but strategic actions. He does them so well, even he doesn't realize he's doing it. Its like he's constantly playing chess, sacrificing he little pawns in life to secure the safety of the king.

Draxum breathed out shakily. “I… Never intended for you and Three to-“ Leonardo kicked the table so hard, it brushed past Draxum and crashed into the opposite wall, where it burst into shards of wood and ceramic. Plaster crumbled from the wall. Draxum sat frozen in his chair with his lips pressed shut.

I have no words to explain how much impact this has. Draxum calling Donnie, Three. Leo's wildly violent reaction. Draxum, and how utterly terrified he is, heart racing, pressed into his seat like he could just melt away and hide. This scene right here, is powerful. Then, the paragraphs following that are like a kick to the gut.

“My knee twitched, Sorry,” Leonardo said again. “Go on, what did you do? It can’t be worse than what you did to my big brother. All the nightmares and nervous breakdowns he keeps having, man. Man. Can’t be worse than what you did to the kindest person I know.”

"The kindest person I know." To know that Leo is talking about Raph, really hits hard. Raph, who got mad at Leo over and over when he was made leader. Raph, who punched a hole in Leo's wall. Raph, who under the krangs influence, nearly choked his brother to death. Yet, Leo still refers to him as the kindest person he knows. Because, Raph is gentle, kind, sweet, and nurturing. Leo sees what Draxum has done to Raph, and he's livid. Because if Raph, who is naturally so gentle and caring, be so violent; what's going on with Donnie?

Of course. The kindest of you must be restless, Draxum thought. All weapons are placeless, in a world without war.

I find this right here, to be an excellent distinction between how Draxum and Leo view Raph. Leo sees Raph as his precious brother, who had his mind warped by Draxum, making him into a killer. He completely blames Draxum. Meanwhile, Draxum doesn't see Raph as that kindhearted person. Raph is a violent weapon, who has kind attributes. Leo and Draxum are literally seeing Raph on opposite spectrums.

Faster than Draxum could react, the edge of Leonardo’s katana kissed his throat. The second one buried deep into the wooden backrest, an inch from his neck. Their icy-hot metal nicked his skin, a twitch away from his carotid artery. The blades stayed dead calm, but Leonard’s voice shook. “Take it back,” he said. “Donnie’s not like them. He’d never hurt Mike. He’d never hurt my Unit.”

I find it interesting that Leo called them his unit. Not his family, or brothers, but rather his unit. This could have been a way to make Draxum understand him better, or to refer to his brothers as a team, though I feel as if it could have almost been a slip-up. Leo is clearly panicking, making excuses for Donnie, getting in Draxum's face and spewing the first words that come to mind, which happens to be unit. Like a military unit.

Leonardo’s expression fell. “I…” He jerked back, and pulled his twin blades with him, retreating. “No,” he croaked. In the beginning of the chapter, Leo is very adamant that he doesn't need Donnie. Its not a need, nor a want, nut simply love. However, as he dissolves into panic, Leo is very clear about how he need Donnie. As if he were a thing, and Leo doesn't even realize it.

Gosh, this chapter is so hard to articulate into words. So much happened, yet very little. I'm left speechless, no other words left to explain how much I love it.

Thoughts on the Tron audio commentary

So, I've listened to the Tron audio commentary for the first time now. It's incredible just how much work they put into this movie back then (all the frames had to be edited INDIVIDUALLY!).

Considering the enormous amount of effort, it's quite unfair that the movie was disqualified from the Oscars because using a computer for special effects was viewed as "cheating" - meanwhile, special effects are almost synonymous with CGI nowadays. xD

I also like how they gave so much room to the programmers as characters (for example, Alan's first name is a reference to Alan Kay, the spiritual father of the laptop), how they incorporated the theme of "large companies vs individuals" (which somehow feels more relevant now than ever), and that they designed the electronic world as a kind of "mirror" of the real one (like the employees' cubicles being a parallel to the cells the programs are held in).

However, my absolute highlight is this quote by Harrison Ellenshaw about CGI and computer animation:

"Ironically, one of the things that was our creative philosophy we enjoyed and were proud of was that we were taking computer animation and letting it stand on its own. We weren't trying to make computer animation mimic reality, and the job was then to make reality - the actors and the sets - look like computer animation. We used to say, "well, if you got lemons, make lemonade", everybody else - and certainly since this point - has been going nuts trying to make computer animation mimic reality perfectly. And I found that the limitations of computer graphics at the time were the most exciting thing. If computer graphics - if computer animation - is no longer different from reality, maybe we've lost something in that."

I love this quote for so many reasons - on one hand, it feels almost prophetic considering that modern movies are showing us that there are limits to the realism of CGI (the resolution of today's movies is higher, but that of the CGI is not, which just ends up making everything look cheap and fake.) On the other hand, I love how they just defied the trend that everything always has to look "realistic", and instead embraced the different look of the CGI as something positive.

The creators of Tron didn't view the CGI's weaknesses as a bug, but as a feature, and the result was one of the most unique, visually distinct movies even to date.

Making art doesn't consist of simply copying what others did - what really defines creativity is walking paths that no one dared to walk before, and doing things that nobody was able to imagine before.

Day 1: Upbringing

I actually wrote this awhile ago for Thalia, but I think it fits the prompt, so I'm going to post an excerpt for the Circle Mage event.

Thalia recalls running through the labyrinthine mazes of the back gardens, of scraping the bare skin under her summer dress on stone benches. The air was drenched with sea spray and the scent of her mother’s roses. The light was orange and their shadows long, and there was so much laughter.

The Trevelyan siblings were four: Micah the heir, tall and proud, grasping the hilt of his sword in the front entry portrait; Laela the lovely, with a straight smile and impeccable needlework; Charlotte the brave, keen at archery and bound for Chantry service, and Thalia. Littlest Thalia — a touch too clumsy to take after Laela, a bit too timid to follow Charlotte. Loved, but an afterthought.

She remembers Ostwick proper only vaguely, her father’s estate imposing, the walls secure against the riff-raff of the street. It’s the country house she recalls best, the languid summers spent there to escape the heat of the city. Her mother humming on the patio, wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect her from the sun. The fresh-cut smell of grass, the green staining her knees, games of tag and capture the flag and templars and apostates.

(Was she more often the templar or the apostate? She doesn’t know. But she remembers running, and running, and Aha-caught-you, it’s the Circle for you! But it was just the shade under a willow tree, all forgotten for a piano lesson or a visit from a cousin or lemonade and cookies served in the atrium.)

What did she want, in those days? This, too, is a blank. Did she worry? Oh, no. She received fond pats on the head from her father, and the servants seemed charmed by her sense of humor. She read many books with her stomach on the floor, kicking her legs very unladylike in the air. She liked the romances, the adventure stories, the tales of heroes and kings and Andraste, the warrior prophet. She supposed her parents would one day find a match for her, and she would wile most of her life away at balls and picnics, with a husband who was bland but kind, the blurry faces of her children filling the air with their inane chatter. But it all seemed so far away, and there were three older ones to settle first.

When the accident occurred, Thalia was thirteen, part girl and part becoming-who-you-are-meant-to-be. A running game in the back garden, her sisters too fast for her to catch, her hand outstretched and then a crack of thunder as in a storm. Her hand smarted and the electricity reverberated in her teeth. No one hurt, just a burned patch of grass.

Yet things began to move quickly. Whispers of hushed urgency in the parlor, the door locked. She peered in the key hole to see her parents pacing. Her siblings’ sudden silence, giving her a wide berth when she entered a room, as if she had committed a crime. And then, not two days later, real templars at the gate, their armor shining so brightly in the sun it hurt her eyes. You must be dying in this heat, she said, but neither smiled.

It was Micah who told her the way of it. He was nineteen and pinch-faced, eager to prove he was every inch the man he’d grown up being told he would become. They stood in the entry hall, the templars lurking by the door. He said many things, but she only remembers one: Six generations of Trevelyans, and not one mage. Not one.

I’m not a mage, Thalia protested.

Braille - A Prophetic-Hijinks Drabble

Bruno wiped the sweat from his brow to admire his work. Not so much of the labor of the work but the stress that came with getting it absolutely perfect. He checked his sample over and over again, comparing it to what he’d just done on the frame of Ramiro’s door.

The braille looked like an exact copy.

“I should have been a carpenter,” he said to himself.

“It looks great, Woodpecker,” Elena said behind him. He turned slightly to see his wife come up the stairs with a glass of lemonade for him. “Are you sure it won’t be too sharp for his fingers?”

“Completely safe.” He tucked the sample under his arm and wiped his hands just as Ramiro came passing through the hall with Pedro.

“Hey, perfect timing. Ramiro, mijo, I just finished your name. Come give it a try.”

His son approached his father’s voice, and he felt for the familiar frame of his door his father was working on. When he found the braille and traced his fingers along the bumps, he didn’t need to see his father’s beaming smile to know he was full of pride.

“Wow, I can’t believe it,” he said.

“Your dad’s practically a pro right?” He took the lemonade from Elena to take a sip.

“I can’t believe you’d say this about Abuela Alma.”

“What?” Bruno’s face flushed and he practically choked on the drink.

“Oh, wow, this is very inappropriate!” Ramiro brought his hand to his mouth in shock. “I’ll have to wash my hands after reading such filth.”

“But - but I followed exactly what they did for me.” Bruno looked at the sample again. “What did they say?”

“Oh, it’s so horrible, I can’t repeat it!” Ramiro walked away again with Pedro who was trying not to snicker. “I can’t believe you’d say such things on the walls of Casita-” Even he couldn’t keep from laughing when he heard Pedro cackling.

Bruno turned red when Elena hid her own snicker and put her hand on his arm to steady him.

“He gets his acting chops from you, amor,” she said.

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #299

Today was a very cloudy and sleepy sort of autumn day - perfect for curling up under a blanket somewhere with a mug of tea or hot cocoa and something to read. I didn't exactly do that, but I did flop in front of the fireplace with my cats for a while and read various things that other people created online. I try to find my way around to wholesome places lately, and I did find a variety of things! I even saw a cute little guinea pig eating tasty guinea pig snacks, and a wonderful little picture of a praying mantis today! From the caption that was written about the mantis, I learned that the word "mantis" has its roots in Greek; it means "prophet". I never knew!

…Given the source of the photo and the caption, I wonder if you already knew, haha. This person says a lot of interesting and thoughtful things, and I feel really lucky that I get to read what they write. I try to be encouraging and write wholesome things in response from time to time. But I guess part of me worries sometimes that instead of being encouraging and heartwarming, I'm just coming across as awkward and weird.

...But then I remember that it's not my responsibility to tiptoe around others' misperceptions of me; I can't control how I'm perceived by other people. It is my job to be true to myself, to behave with integrity, and to make sure my words and actions align with my intentions. And my intentions are good.

Despite the sleepiness of the morning, and despite writing yesterday that I wasn't ready for today to start, and despite being groggy, I still woke up in good spirits! After doing various things, J went out with a friend for breakfast, so M and I went out to get breakfast somewhere, too! And do you know what!!! They had!!! Fresh!!! LEMONADE!!!!

Fresh lemonade is one of my favorite things!!! I was so happy!!!

They also had some kind of Italian wrap, with pepperoni, soppressata, and crunchy diced pancetta with provolone cheese, tomatoes, greens, and onions!!

M got some kind of breakfast pizza! It had eggs, bacon, and tomatoes on it! It looked pretty good!

I was a little sleepy afterwards; that's when I decided to chill in front of the fireplace in M's room. I get cold really easily, and today was chilly. It was nice to sit and browse the internet while surrounded by my cats. I ended up falling half asleep for a while, and that felt... correct.

Hey, Sephiroth? You wanna sit with some tea in front of a fireplace on a chilly day sometime, looking out the window at the riotously-colored autumn leaves, and talking about random things? I know it's impossible; I know. But... just think about it, okay?

In any case, after my unexpected half-nap, I had some pep in me again, so I decided to make a food and a hot cocoa!!

Some time ago, I had gotten some rainbow potatoes:

We have red ones, yellow ones, and purple ones!! And they'll all mash down to the same color, but still, looking at them makes me happy.

...Hey, Sephiroth? Do you have lots of different kinds of potatoes in your world, too? And if you do, where do they come from? In my world, they're native to a place called the Andes Mountains. The Andes Mountains are in a continent called South America. They were cultivated by the Incan and Aymaran peoples. Then some really awful people from Spain showed up (they were awful because they were genocidal maniacs... it's a long story...) and brought the potatoes back to Europe. From there, they were sent to be grown in Ireland. Then from there, Irish people brought them to North America when they immigrated there. Like this:

Well anyway. I sauteed some broccoli in butter, and I steamed some salmon...

...I really love making salmon in my rice cooker. My rice cooker is also a steamer, and the salmon always comes out luscious and tender. It's one of my favorite things to make.

From there, I decided to mash the potatoes with some goat cheese...

...Want some? There's applesauce, too, in the middle...

I even made some hot cocoa for myself! Remember that trip we made to the Cross-Eyed Owl store and I got those weird packets of hot cocoa?

The directions say to pour the mix into 8 fluid ounces of water (one measured cup). But... we don't do that. Not in my house. In my house, we make proper hot cocoa. You don't mix it in water. You mix it in milk. Here's what 1 measured cup of milk looks like:

You heat it up in the microwave for about a minute or a minute and a half, and then you dump the powder in and mix it!

...Want some? It's pretty good!

Yesterday, I wasn't ready for today. But I decided to make something good out of it anyway. Even on groggy, sleepy days like this one, gloomy and full of clouds, we can look for the light and the love in all sorts of little things.

Sephiroth... what magic did you find today? Will you tell me about it sometime?

Well. I suppose that's it for today. It's getting pretty late, and I don't have much else rolling around in my noggin.
