When Time Looks Back

A ROTTMNT ANGST FANFIC.

The room looked like a cross between a scientific war zone and a study space in crisis. Crumpled papers, open notebooks, glowing tablets, and floating holograms cluttered every corner. The walls projected formulas rewriting themselves, pulsing cellular diagrams, and Donnie’s shell from impossible angles.

On a makeshift table—once a game table, later a dining table, now an extension of the lab—half-eaten snacks, forgotten cups, and notes from the future mixed with those from the present. Everything vibrated slightly whenever someone leaned on it the wrong way.

Donnie was curled up on the couch, a blanket around his shoulders, hands gripping a cup of tea Splinter had made for him. His eyes were half-closed, but he hadn’t missed a single word. He just… wasn’t speaking. And for the first time in his life, he felt completely useless. Still, he was moved by what his brothers were doing for him.

The two Mikeys, sitting on the floor, each immersed in their own chaos of notes, mumbled ideas now and then. Raph (26) stood frozen in front of the same chart, as if he could will it to make sense by staring hard enough. Beside him, his teenage self was deep in discussion with S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N.

“I insist,” said S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N., “the solution is injectable, yes. But also lethal.”

“What if we apply it in microdoses?” suggested April, reviewing a sequence on her tablet. “With constant immune boosters.”

“That would require transfusions every 36 to 48 hours to reduce the lethality,” S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. replied. “Which means a steady flow of compatible blood. And, might I remind you, we only have one donor.”

All eyes turned, magnetically, to Leo (16), who still looked a bit dizzy.

“If I have to give blood every two days,” he said calmly, without raising his voice, “I’ll do it. I’m not letting him die.”

“Leo…” April spoke up, firmly. “You passed out an hour ago. You can’t assume you’ll hold up for weeks like this. We can’t lose you too.”

Leo (25), who had been quietly sitting beside him, straightened up.

“Then let me recover first. I’ll load up on vitamins, iron, whatever it takes. I can donate too. I’m not just going to sit here and watch.”

S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. turned his sphere toward him. Processing.

“With a strict recovery regimen, yes. That would be viable. You’d need at least five days.”

“We can hold out for five days,” said Raph (26), without looking at anyone. As if speaking to the chart. “We’ll hold out.”

“Hey,” said Mikey (24), holding up the now-famous notebook. “It says something here. This Donnie wrote that certain Kraang molecules are unstable under specific electromagnetic fields.”

Several heads turned toward him.

“If we calibrate the microdose while Donnie is exposed to one of those fields…”

“We might reduce the impact on his organs,” S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. added immediately. “Lower the risk of collapse.”

Pause.

“Though…” he continued, “it could also cause hallucinations, temporary disorientation, intense nausea. Unpredictable side effects.”

Leo (16) shrugged.

“Nausea, madness, and transfusions? Sounds like a regular afternoon with Mikey. That’s acceptable.”

“Hey!” Mikey (15) cried, offended. “I’m an unforgettable afternoon, thank you very much.”

From the couch, Donnie murmured:

“Sometimes I wonder how anyone survives a loss.”

Silence fell like a clean cut. Even S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. stopped moving.

Leo (25) looked at him. His eyes were wet, but his voice didn’t tremble.

“You don’t survive. You just… endure.”

Mikey (24) walked over and knelt beside the couch.

“It feels weird having you here. Even half-zombie.”

“Yeah,” added Raph (26), half-smiling. “I even miss when you used to complain about the Wi-Fi.”

Donnie raised an eyebrow. Spoke softly.

“I just wanted to say I’m still here. I’m listening. Even if… it’s hard to keep up.”

Casey walked in from the kitchen, holding some notes. He waved them in the air.

“Of course you’re still here. You left brilliant stuff behind. You weren’t lost at all.”

Donnie took a shaky breath. Tried to stand. Leo (25) helped him up without a word.

“So… it’s now or never, right?”

Leo (16) stood up too—wobbly, but steady.

“Exactly. But don’t die until you beat me at chess. And I don’t even know how to play chess.”

Donnie gave a faint smile.

“Not sure that makes sense.”

“Pretty sure it doesn’t,” Raph (17) confirmed.

April closed her tablet. Powered it off completely.

“We have a plan. Microdoses, electromagnetic fields, transfusions, constant monitoring…”

“And hope,” Leo (16) added softly.

From the back of the room, Splinter said in a low, steady voice:

“And family.”

They all looked at each other. Exhausted. Disheveled. Drained.

But together.

He remembers what it felt like to open that portal, well, besides the pain. It was as if a floodgate had opened. He felt like he was drowning in the energy. Of course, the portal took a lot out of him. But after a few weeks of recovery, he could feel the raging ocean of power in his chest once more. Nowadays, he would compare it more to a puddle in a desert. Draxum’s only conclusion was that he just needed more practice. That his portal came so naturally because he was in a life-or-death situation, and his mystics responded to his severe distress accordingly. Mikey didn’t have the heart to tell anyone that maybe Casey was wrong about him. Maybe because they changed the timeline… he didn’t need his powers anymore. Maybe they would continue to drain until there was nothing left… Maybe his ninpō would follow. He never voiced these concerns, obviously. His family had a lot more pressing matters than his stupid magic tricks not working.

@ ALL RISE FANS THAT MAKE COMICS & STORIES

So I’ve noticed that in this fandom it’s common to include Deaf/ASL-using-characters into stories, which is honestly AMAZING and makes me SO HAPPY TO SEE, but many of us aren’t deaf we rely on resources, therefore:

My ASL teacher gave us this website cause it’s updates constantly (ASL evolves lots) and it’s a lot more accurate and reliable than just google :))

To work it- type the word, and a word bank will pull up, click on the term u want and a video/description of the sign and word will appear!!!

It’s rlly simple and has most words and if it doesn’t it’s bc it’s finger spelled probs!!!!

If u want more in-depth good grammar, search up “five parameters ASL”, “glossing in ASL” and watch a few videos to see “how sentence structure differs in ASL”

As always, remember it’s ok to make mistakes/notice a mistake, just be mindful and kind :D most of us aren’t out for malice and if someone is it’ll probs be very obv 😭

Was ANYONE going to tell me that baby turtles kiss (bump beaks) each other to express love and nuzzling is one turtle’s way to confirm the safety/possession of another turtle???

Like, they NUZZLE to say “I love you are you okay you’re mine” ALL AT ONCE. It’s NOT just some silly little motion. It has MEANING!

The kind of meaning that could TOTALLY translate as “I would kill for you just point at who” in a scared moment LIKE AH

DO YOU KNOW WHAT WRITERS COULD DO WITH THIS KIND OF VALUABLE INFORMATION???

It didn't excuse all that had been done - the distrust, the miscommunication, the unreal expectations set on those who could never fulfill them. But in spite of everything, these were all linked to a burden that he was never meant to bear, believing it was his and hoarding it rather than sharing as one should. Gio was no more a leader than Raph was, neither of them able fit into the role yet were forced into it due to their ages and father's hands-off approach. But while Raph had a certain soft touch to his nature, Gio did not, and Donnie shared that trait to the point of understanding. Donnie needed things to fall into place as planned and had trouble compromising when the situation called for it - stubbornly so, and those facts a leader did not make, but Gio tried to brute force those facts as law. Donnie would pity him if he didn't understand him so well, determined to have him live through this and thoroughly get him learned in the error of his ways.

Decided to go ahead and update Leo’s character sheet. I had loads of fun doing this! Later on I plan on adding a second panel on what’s in his belt and bags. I’m almost finished with Shen’s sheet as well! So fun! She’s such a cool character.

Chapter 10 of ‘Shadows of the Hamato’ is now up on Ao3! Part 2 of fall. I’ve been really looking forward to this chapter. Feel free to ask questions or anything. I’m always happy to answer.
