Lydia was to return to London. She was 18 after all, and only children went to the countryside. She’d lived with the Walshes for two years, only having seen her parents thrice during that entirety. She’d signed up for medical training, planning to join her Aunt Francesca as a volunteer nurse. Simon-Elliot had offered to drive her to the train station in his parents’ white car. 

“I’m going to enlist the moment I turn 18,” he confessed. “I won’t tell my parents until after I pass the medical examinations. I’ll be damned if I can’t fight the Jerrys.” 

She nodded. “Only a month more and then you can do it.”

“January has always been my least favorite month. I spend most of it waiting for my birthday.”

“Eager to leave your childhood?”

“Since the war started.”

“I want to marry you, Simon-Elliot,” Lydia said suddenly. “We’ve been together for nearly four years. We’ve been a secret for years. I want to elope after your birthday.”

Simon-Elliot was struck by her statements. Elope? Marry? They had been thoughts in the back of his mind, but Lydia brought them to the forefront of his mind. How would everyone react to the knowledge? He knew what everyone thought. He was the eldest son, heir to a dukedom his own father had never asked for. 

After minutes of silence, he swallowed. “Can we sit down?”

“I do want to marry you,” he said. “Very much so. I… I just keep thinking about what everyone will do when they learn. As I near adulthood, I cannot help but think of what your father told me four years ago.”

She frowned. “And what did I say then?”

He smirked. “Fuck them all. More or less.”

“So fuck them all. Let’s get married, my lord.”

“You’ll be Lady Simon-Elliot Walsh, my lady.”

Lydia laughed as they stood up from the freezing stone bench. Simon-Elliot wasn’t bold enough to kiss her in the yard of his parents, but he stroked her cheek, and she covered his gloved hand with her own, leaning into him.
