Does anyone have good book recommendations?
I've recently read The Hidden Gospel by Neil Douglas Klotz and The Universal Christ by Richard Rohr.

I recommend reading The Universal Christ by Richard Rohr!
It speaks of Jesus dying on the cross as an act of solidarity with the human experience, more so than a sacrifice.
God came down onto earth and allowed Himself to be poor, so we don't have to try so hard to be rich.
God came down onto earth and allowed Himself to not be liked by people, so that we don't have to try so hard to be liked by people.
He persevered through human pain - physical and emotional - so that we know we can persevere it to.
i often found the framing of 'God sacrificed his Son for the world' frustrating when I was younger - even though it obviously is true and biblical - because I thought the way it gets spouted ignores the far more interesting and compelling truth that God (the Son) sacrificed himself for the world.
but i think both perspectives are important - not just because the Trinity necessitates both that God is the sacrificer and the one sacrificed - but because they shine complementary light on the kind of love present in the crucifixion.
In Jesus we see God sacrificing himself; giving up power and glory and riches in helplessness. God chooses to un-God himself (in the sense of suffering pain and death, the very antithesis of divinity - not in the sense Jesus isn't God) for us.
And in the Father we see God sacrificing the very person he loves most. i think if there's one thing that the popularity of Pieta scenes, with Mary cradling her dead son, shows is that this kind of sacrificial love is also something that resonates with people. There is nothing in the cosmos which is more precious to God the Father, nothing as beautiful or wonderful - and yet that doesn't get in the way of his love. There's a kind of interesting paradox; God loves us so much, he will give up the one he loves most for us.
And that makes God's sacrifice on the cross so much richer - not just the pain of death, but the pain of loss; not just the pain of abandonment, but the pain of watching the horrors unfold.
(now if someone else can shed light on whether the Holy Spirit adds an extra dimension to this I'd love to hear it)

When Saint Augustine said “evil and sin doesn’t exist, it’s just an absence of good” and when Saint Julian of Norwich said “sin doesn’t exist, everything is love and charity, we just struggle to perceive and embody that love and thus suffer pain and despair” and when Jesus Christ said to be perfect as god is perfect means to love everyone and when Saint Hildegard said all are sick and feeble and rotting and inherently worthy of love and care and do you see the connections love is everything love is all there is, sin is what happens when we suffer because we do not love and do not allow ourselves to be loved and it’s fixed by restoration of the sinner to the love which never leaves them it just lingers there until they are ready to accept it. The great commandment is love. We are loved and we ought to love. Care community charity affection support interdependence THESE are holy and these are what constitute everything and our oneness in god who is love. The attributes of God aren’t separate. God’s justice is love, his holiness is love, his righteousness is love, his power is love, his knowledge is love. He loved us so much he became us so that we could become one with him in a way creation never could otherwise. That’s why sin entered the world. That’s why the cross happened. So that creator and creation could become one in love through the remedying unification of the passion, like when you have to cut a section out of a tree and cut a branch in order to graft it on so that they become one and begin producing fruit.
The body of Christ is like Van Aken’s tree, which grows forty different types of fruit after a process of careful grafting, tending and growth. Look at it—it’s beautiful. That is our relationship to God through Christ.

"Every time you choose love or positively connect with someone or something, you are in touch with the Divine Personality. You do not even need to call it "God" - God does not seem to care at all. It is equally important to say that to negatively connect, to hate, fear, or oppose, is not to meet the Divine Personality. Thus we are strongly warned against such negativity in every way, and such things are called "sin" or even the state of "hell", which is not really a geographical place but a very real state of consciousness." The Universal Christ, Richard Rohr

you know what I'm forever sad never became a really really compelling arc in twelve's time (or at least not to my knowledge)?
an acknowledgement that peter capaldi already played a very notable character in the doctor who universe--in torchwood: children of earth. an acknowledgement that twelve's face already belonged to a forgettable, mediocre nobody of a tragic man, john frobisher.
an average, milquetoast man who shot his wife, his children, point blank, and then committed suicide himself, because he could and would not sacrifice his kids to the 456 to be tortured and drained alive to make the aliens' fucking recreational drug, even though he was a cog-in-the-machine part of the government that had just very comfortably decided to sacrifice "the undesirable's" children. That had decided that "well the government has to be seen in the future to have also made sacrifices. and instead of picking our own children, we have picked yours, john frobisher. a forgettable, acceptable sacrifice that none of us will feel."
and he decided no. no, you don't get my children. and I won't live with the horror of what we've done and are about to do.
Of course, with horribly personal, terrible sacrifices, torchwood wins in the end. john and his family didn't have to die. but they did. was it a cowardly move? a heroic one, given the only options he thought he had? i don't think anyone could make that judgement without being in his shoes.
now imagine...imagine if twelve was canonically acknowledged to have had this man's face. The time vortex decided john frobisher needed to be heard, to be seen once more, to teach the doctor some kind of lesson that needed to be deeply learned. give the doctor the face of a deeply imperfect, desperate, trapped father who did not know how to do the right thing.
and then fucking play with it.
