i went down a rabbit hole about how binaural beats may help focus, classical music that switches from like 128 to 132 beats (and apparently classical music takes about 20 minutes to get you into focus zone) like Four Seasons/Mozart/Bach/Hans Zimmer’s Inception music works well for this focus-zone, and gamma OR beta waves may help with focus study/writing wise but i can’t entirely figure out which one it’s supposed to be (but theta waves apparently make you calm/relaxed/sleepy so i guess theta is the way to go if you need to digest/calm your nervous system/sleep). 

and anyway ALL THIS to determine Xion’s Theme from Kingdom Hearts MUST be doing the same stuff the ‘classical music’ that causes a focus-zone does. Because for me personally Xion’s Theme works better than ANY other music i’ve tried (better than Hans Zimmer’s stuff since i used that prior to finding Xions Theme and realizing it worked SO much better for me). also i realized just for me personally a more quicker paced instrumental music works better than anything slower pace - i was looking up audios to potentially use on youtube and just universally anything with a slower beat irritated me too much to be useable for me to study with (it can be nice in certain situations but not as a focus background noise). 

all this is to say 1. if you have adhd (or want to focus better) there are some studies i found that indicated specifically gamma beats seem to help to focus in on something, instrumental music of certain qualities (changes slightly over time but you can ignore it ‘in the background’ while you do something - Four Seasons was a well known example song they named as having these qualities), and binaural beats (which seem to help brain focus and kind of connect easier to itself? i wasn’t clear on why but binaural beats create the same brain pattern as pleasant meditation does so listening to binaural beats can help cause that kind of relaxed focus if you don’t have time to go meditate successfully). so 2. there is some usefulness to the idea sounds can help with focus. 

3. dear god does ANYONE have any music recommendations or suggestions of ANYTHING vaguely similar to Xion’s Theme from Kingdom Hearts? Because yes i can focus to it, but i would very much love to be able to focus to more than just one single song you have to understand im here listening to Xion’s theme for 10 hours straight a day to try and focus. i would Really appreciate a little more variety in my options ;-;

wait so how did you get a "boring" office job? did you have to go to college or did you just apply for basic stuff and work your way up from there?

it was 100% through connections.

i mean, i actually GOT the job and have been able to KEEP the job because i'm smart and capable and good at doing things and have made the company a lot of money, but if i didn't know the right people i would not have even had a chance at it, and it would be disingenuous of me to pretend otherwise.

most of the moment-to-moment skills i use for clerical work (the majority of my job) i gained in highschool through my fascination with computers + all of the programming and software classes i took.

the business and accounting classes i took in university primed me for a basic understanding of how to run a company (or at least how to manage one, as my exact title is "Business Manager"), and all of my anthropology and sociology studies have given me a pretty keen insight for communication, which comes in major handy in a corporate setting. i was able to latch onto Corpo Speak pretty quickly, which has proven to be an indispensable skill (if a bit soul-sucking to utilize).

i got this job after receiving 0 work or callbacks from Indeed after applying to dozens of jobs over several months, which is a very difficult idea to reconcile with for me. i feel like im pretty capable, but apparently people whose job it is to give other people jobs don't agree. in spite of this, in 2 years ive generated hundreds of thousands of dollars of revenue for the company that decided to hire me because the owner saw me down on my luck and wanted to give me a break.

so i have to wonder, are we stupid, or are the companies stupid?

it's the companies. ive seen it firsthand. with this job, i go to business events and meet some of the most gullible people ive ever come across, and they're all CEOs.

they're so ravenously shortsighted with regards to their quarterly profit margins that they'd chase a 5 dollar bill the wind blew off a cliff for their shareholders. or more accurately, they'd push one of their minimum wage workers off the cliff to grab it.

because of that shortsightedness, conditions are getting worse, employment terms are becoming shorter, companies are shuttering left and right, pays are stagnant or lowering, and the growing number of people this inhuman greed affects are becoming more and more restless.

if you can't get a job in 2024, there's a very good chance it's not your fault. you shouldn't give up (unfortunately for now we still need to earn money to live in society), but try not to forget that.

kristen going from self-annihilatingly stupid to trying to build a genuine bridge with the man who not only wielded the religion that traumatised her (bobby dawn), but also was trying to ruin her life, just bc she thought a grieving father ought to be comforted in some way? her genuine distress at being unable to revivify buddy even though the two had only had negative interactions, or her biting her tongue in front of her parents so she could better look after her little siblings? grappling with the fact that she still, on some level, expected practising religion to be easy and convenient for her as a holdover from an entire childhood spent being a Chosen One, and finally putting her nose to the grindstone and committing to working her ass off for a deity that couldn't even benefit her for a hot minute? making an effort to be cordial with tracker's new gf and letting go of that codependency? the kristen applebees from ep20 would NOT do all the same stupid shit as ep1 and i love that.

fabian being humbled by the narrative again and again has been an absolute treat for his character. the whole ivy/mazey situation was great: freshman/sophomore year fabian would've gone for ivy no sweat, i mean her character seemed pretty similar to pre-redemption aelwyn and he had a huge crush on her then. but this time, when he realised he'd hurt a genuinely great person, and intentionally swallowed his pride to make it up to mazey, even though it required him being 'uncool' with the whole twister thing. his general arc of learning that earnestness and humility doesn't make him less of a man felt like a natural extension of fabian defining his own version of masculinity- sure, a 'maximum legend', but also someone deeply involved in the arts, and someone who is less afraid of saying sorry and being vulnerable in front of someone he likes

fig. fig fig fig. what a woman. its been absolutely fascinating watching build her sense of identity over these three seasons. at her core, fig is a character that loves so deeply. in freshman, she was terrified of the depth of her own devotion, so she tried to distance herself emotionally from everyone. in sophomore, she built herself around that love for other people. in junior year, fig's arc has been learning she can do both: that she's defined by her love for others, but not solely by it. ik emily wanted to retire the character before this season but i think fig's paladin arc was the best capstone to her journey possible.

gorgug's arc has been about establishing clear boundaries for himself and i love it. im aware there's been some Discourse ab the mango soda scene but to me that was pretty easily chalked up to teenage insecurity. a big part of gorgug's arc was trying to believe in himself when everyone around him told him he was too dumb to follow his passion- imagine struggling in an area that you have no natural aptitude for, and someone comes along and also trounces you in the one area you thought you were the best in. i'd be petty and reactive too (gorgug follows up calling her a freak with the fact that she beat the shit out of him, so its clearly him just still smarting from a bruised ego and not actual malice). in general, i've really like gorgug learning to put his foot down and say enough is enough without completely losing his gentleness.

adaine hasnt had an obvious arc, but considering she addressed most of her baggage in the first two seasons, i'm not surprised. i would've liked to see the other bad kids address her 'teenage adult' behaviour, but her self-awareness about it and relying on fabian to pull in clutch for the oracool stuff still felt like she'd learned to rely on her friends at least + her reaching out to aelwyn and the two of them healing from their parents together has been rewarding it its own right.

riz is perfect and has learned nothing. his neuroticism is part of his natural swag

Luffy was a really affectionate person. Anyone who’s had a conversation with him for more than 10 minutes can tell that he’s the physical type. It was how he showed his love to people. To you.

He wasn’t the best at declarations of love or stuff like that, so he showed it in ways that he knew best. After a long, hard day of work, he’ll give you a hug and rub your head to ease the headache.

He’d massage your shoulders and carried you places because your feet were screaming in pain.

Physical affection with acts of service.

Luffy was always touching you, no matter the time or place, he just always was. It was a constant, predictable as the sun coming up each morning.

You’d wake up yo him peppering your face with soft kisses, and throughout the day he’d be holding your hand. Depending on how crowded whatever area you two are in, his grip is loose or tight. But regardless it's always there.

Luffy, while being oblivious to most things, understood how you felt about PDA and did his absolute best not to be too touchy with you around other people. Knowing how uncomfortable it could be for you.

But he still insisted on touching the small of your back when you both are walking or running his hand through your hair when you two are laying down.

One day, you were sitting on the bed, going over some maps Nami asked you to look over. You heard the bedroom door opening and before you knew it Luffy was laying on top of you. His head fitted in the crock of your shoulder.

You weren’t even surprised at this.

“Can you shift a bit over so I can continue reading my maps?” You asked.

“Nope!” Luffy responded, popping the p. “I need to recharge and you need to break. I left in the morning and came back near evening and you are still reading those maps.”

He’s always doing this too. Deciding to just lay on you when you overworked too much. He flipped your bodies so he was laying on his back and you were on his chest. He’ll hold you close to him and just laid there for a while, in peaceful silence.

Eventually, you’d fall asleep and Luffy was always right behind you.

It’s the same for him too. Giving him compliments and doing stuff for him was fine, but you watched as he melted right into your hold when you opened your arms to him.

If you two weren’t doing anything, he’d take your hand and placed it on his head. The question, though silent, was clear. You began to absentmindedly rub his head. Dragging your fingers along his scalp.

He loved when you’d touch his face too. In the beginning you were fascinated with his stretching ability. You never stretched his cheeks that far even though he insisted that it doesn’t hurt. He loved it when you’ll trace your fingers over the palm of his hands.

His loving language was physical affection, and it was yours too.

I want to elaborate on this since i have more time, and want to remember. Cause i left it out in my brief description, but i think it was important that the 74 year old volunteer who was a veteran was also African American. most of the the volunteers at our museum are very very white - me included (while this being free to the public our guests are quite diverse). And the group of veterans touring the museum privately were mostly African American. And it felt extremely important that the older veteran volunteer be there to greet the group and talk with them, while the rest of us volunteers took our usual stations. I think he helped the group feel more seen and more easily welcome than someone like me could. Representation is so important in making spaces feel inclusive.

We had a veterens group come take a private tour today, and one of our volunteers on public museum days is a 74 yr old vet himself and performs the flag ceremony when we close for the day. And watching him talk with the mostly younger group was special, it really meant a lot. I also got a chance to talk to the guy myself when usually on public days he's surrounded by friends and family. Im so so grateful for having the chance to take time and volunteer like this even in the midst of my life being upended ^_^
