the fact that pro-monarchy arguments have degenerated, over the past few centuries, from “the king rules by divine right and is accountable to nobody but god, to “uhm the royals generate a lot of income from tourism” will never stop being extremely funny to me

I was gonna make a joke about how I say “I need to go the circus again” the way people used to say they need to go to the sea to balance their humors. But I realized the circus balances humors too

finally brought myself to read the neil gaiman article and i could barely stomach it- but it is such an important piece, not just for the victims finally having the platform to seek justice, but as a reminder of the ways in which abusers can indeed be charming, and outspoken on progressive issues, and sensitive, and still be abusers. it falls in line with a trend of public facing men who use said progressive views as a shield from scrutiny, and i hope as an online community we can start being more vigilant. this isn't to blame all the people who believed he was what he told us- no one is to blame but the abuser and the people who knowingly enabled the abuse. but the ways in which we have attributed certain appearances and mannerisms to moral good is worth examining.
the only thing i want to say further on the subject is this:
after the whole jkr nightmare, 'death of the author' has been run through a rightwing-like wringer of stripping the phrase of all actual meaning. the philosophical implications can be debated to whatever length suits you, but the fact remains as this; death of the author can only exist uncorrupted when the author is indeed dead- gaiman's financial position helped enable him to be an abuser, and he makes his money from fans buying his work and engaging with his media.
you can enjoy his work privately or through avenues that dont give him money. pirate his material if you must, (or better yet, read the tanith lee books that gaiman lifted so many elements of 'the sandman' from). but you also have to accept that if you want to disregard all of that and publicly so, ppl are going to feel some type of way about it. no one can stop you from putting money in his pockets, but you can't also turn around and demand no one react to you doing so (so long as that reaction isn't heinous and/or unproductive eg. death threats).
i've added a link to an unpaywalled version of the article for anyone who wants to hear the victims' accounts firsthand below. it's a very triggering read in regards to SA, coercion, manipulation, but if you can manage it, i would highly recommend doing so.
#neil gaiman#neil gaiman article#discourse#discourse feels like a weak word to describe it but even so#anyway any practice of death of the author specifically bc the author is abusive where the author still benefits materially doesnt count#the ACTUAL death of the author ppl who just use it to reinterpret a text's themes using textual evidence ur doing great and i love u#tw: sa mention

"Do you want to come over 4 days a week and come hang out?" "Yes." "Can I roll to see if she's telling the truth?" "She means it. She seems... surprised she means it."
HELLO??? HELLO??????? IS THIS THING ON????

#dimension 20#misfits and magic 2#evan kelmp#sam britain#so haha what was that ab. why did sam get so freaked out ab meaning it huh#i havent finished the finale yet but that whole part in evan's apartment made me CRAZY#sam immediately going to stand in the spot labelled for her. peeling the tape off of 'vessel' to make a new space for him#literally creating hope for him even if it starts to shrink immediately after#ik k also adds to this later. but k rlly desperately needs real human connection. she needs that kind of community so so bad#sam has that already. and she still would choose to dedicate all her wonderful busy time to going to hang out at evan's apartment#hold on im going insane thinking ab the parallels to 'understanding. i have power'#she has human attention. she has basically divine connection in the qohlye. and she would choose to go from a massive set for a show ab he#to hang out in evan kelmp's sad taped apartment. she has admiration. but she wants love. *real* love. from someone who cares#it could also b bc danielle radford is one of the most powerfully charismatic ppl ive ever seen and everything she does in rp makes me craz#but like. cmon.#mismag spoilers

guess im misfits and magic 2 posting now. im a little frustrated the players didnt pick up on aabria's very obvious signposting that sam was meant to be connected to miskoro (the whole conversation with the qohlye eg. 'i feel as though you're choosing me because i fit best of what is left', how miskoro's personality is very sam complementary with how soft and eager to help it is, purple making more sense than yellow for sam as a signature colour, the ability to alter the nature of magic the way sam has continuously altered the path of otherwise straightforward battles through her desire to make it a situation that fosters communication instead of violence).... but i have to admit, the whole confrontation was so thoughtful- especially the 'power, or understanding?'/'understanding, i have power' exchange- that I was less annoyed about it than i thought i was going to be

#theyre like m/f yuri. to me. do u get it#this isnt just me shipping the nearest guy and girl together i promise#all their tender moments. their natural chemistry#i dont fully get k and evan's old deal but it kind of seemed like they brought out worse sides of each other(?)#whereas sam and evan. how genuine they are as ppl now w/ evan becoming comfortable being 'weird' + sam wanting to meet ppl where theyre at#it cooks and idk if they know it#ofc they make fantastic friends and id b perfectly happy with just that#i just think they have a really sweet chemistry that would make for a cute romance#misfits and magic#misfits and magic 2#evan kelmp#sam britain#dimension 20#on ep 10 rn so idk where its going. romance isnt a big focus this season so id be shocked if anything actually happened

I can’t stand people that don’t let me speak hyperbolically. If I can’t respond to a minor inconvenience that someone should get shot in the fucking head for it then what’s the point of it all.

okay. listen. I try not to be pedantic about this sort of thing but it’s starting to get on my nerves. the wire mother offers milk but not comfort. the cloth mother offers comfort but not milk. if something is comforting, fun, or otherwise compelling, but lacks substance, that is the cloth mother. if something is boring or unpleasant but has substance, that is the wire mother.
