The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick
Martha Storm is a librarian who does her best to help out the people in her life, but is getting annoyed with all of the things people are asking her to do. One day, a mysterious story book is left at the library for her, with a note from her grandmother, dated three years after she had died.
This was a cute, cozy story. I liked the mystery and the character growth. I also liked that we got to look back in time to Betty, Martha's mother. I will say that any time Thomas was mentioned, my blood started to boil. I hated him so much.
I really liked that our main character was a 52-year old woman, because it reminds us that no matter how old you are, you can start a new path in life.

When Martha stepped inside the library, she closed her eyes and inhaled the earthy, almond scent of the books. If she could bottle the aroma, she'd wear it as a perfume, L'eau de la Bibliothèque

Lost Chopin Music Uncovered in ‘Thrilling’ Discovery
A curator at a museum in New York City has discovered a previously unknown waltz written by Frédéric Chopin, the first time that a new piece of work by the Polish composer has been found in nearly 100 years.
The waltz, written on a small manuscript measuring about 4 inches by 5 inches, was first discovered by curator Robinson McClellan in 2019, who then sought outside expert help, according to a statement from the Morgan Library & Museum on Monday.
“He found it peculiar that he could not think of any waltzes by Chopin that matched the measures on the page,” reads the statement.
“Chopin famously wrote in ‘small forms,’ but this work, lasting about one minute, is shorter than any other waltz by him,” adds the statement.
“It is nevertheless a complete piece, showing the kind of ‘tightness’ that we expect from a finished work by the composer.”
McClellan asked Chopin expert Jeffrey Kallberg, associate dean for arts and letters at the University of Pennsylvania, to help authenticate the waltz. “Extensive research points to the strong likelihood that the piece is by Chopin,” according to the statement.
This research included analysis by paper conservators who found that the paper and ink match those that Chopin normally used.
The Morgan Library & Museum believes that the fact that the manuscript is so small could mean that it was meant to be a gift that the recipient would have kept in an autograph album.

Chopin was known to sign manuscripts that were gifts, but this one is unsigned, which the museum says suggests that he ultimately decided against giving it away.
“This newly discovered waltz expands our understanding of Chopin as a composer and opens new questions for scholars to consider regarding when he wrote it and for whom it was intended,” said McClellan in the statement.
“To hear this work for the first time will be an exciting moment for everyone in the world of classical piano.”
“Our extensive music collection is defined by handwritten examples of the creative process and it is thrilling to have uncovered a new and unknown work by such a renowned composer,” said Colin B. Bailey, museum director, in the statement.
The discovery of an unknown piece of work by Chopin has not happened since the late 1930s, according to the museum.
The Polish composer was born in 1810 and was best known for solo piano pieces.
Chopin died in Paris, France, at the age of just 39. He’s one of Poland’s most famous sons, and his name adorns the airport serving the capital Warsaw, as well as parks, streets, benches and buildings.
His works and image are ubiquitous across the central European country, and his residences bear unmissable plaques. Busts and statues of his likeness are dotted across several major cities.
Even his heart, preserved in alcohol after his death in 1849 is sealed into a wall of Warsaw’s Holy Cross Church.
But recent suggestions about Chopin’s private life collided awkwardly with Poland’s staunchly conservative traditions – and caused some to question whether the story of Chopin that Poles are told from a young age is true.
According to a Swiss radio documentary released in 2020, the composer had relationships with men, and those relationships were left out of history by successive historians and biographers; a potentially thorny charge in one of Europe’s worst countries for LGBTQ rights.

i just got my library card renewed after a very long time - do you know what all i can do with it other than taking out books? because i know there's more things but i feel like it's a silly question to ask
Not at all, and welcome back to the library life! Your millage may vary based on which of these services your library has available, but here's a few things I know of off the top of my head that are pretty common:
The library might have CDs, movies, and even newspapers you can borrow as well
Libby, an app that uses your library card to borrow and download ebooks and audiobooks to enjoy on your mobile device or e-reader
Kanopy, a streaming service for TV shows and movies
Hoopla, which has a whole bunch of stuff like shows & movies, comics, and magazines
Your library might have a makerspace that gives you access to things like 3D printers, button makers, computers with a bunch of Adobe software, ect
Sometimes they host book clubs or other fun community events!
my "#library guides" tag also has a number of posts about services like these if you'd like some more info. Your library's website should also list what services they offer, and/or you could ask a librarian there. Have fun!

This is another one of those reveals that makes MUCH more sense in context, and even MORE sense if you know Camellia. Maybe I should get scripting that setting reveal video?
Speaking of the full context, you can find that here: https://youtu.be/QXedtJablrs
Video Description: A young white man monologues to camera. He's been edited to remove some perfectly good dramatic pauses, because this clip was originally meant for tiktok. Even despite this, there's an air of dramatic reveal.
Anchiem docks, over the eventually-named continent of Karsus, it was not Karsus before they docked there for this last time. But what's about to happen changes the entire plane forever.

one of the things i'm most proud of making. i don't usually go into making an art piece without a plan but i knew i wanted to make an altoid shrine. i made this in february, so saint valentine felt fitting. i bought a lot of scrapbook flair and beads from a craft store. the skull i sculpted without a plan either, modeled after valentine's real skull that is kept in a church in italy. i'm more used to making collages than physical media like this but im very please with the way it came out.

Tumblr media
Martha Storm is in a dead-end rut. After spending several years caring for her ailing parents, their deaths have left her with a void of purpose in her life that she attempts to fill by doing favours for everyone who asks her. But then a very curious book falls into her hands: it is filled with stories she wrote when she was a child, but even more curious is the inscription — written in her grandmother's handwriting, dated 3 years after her grandmother's death. As Martha investigates the origins of the book and the rift that always existed between her parents and grandmother, she also begins to reclaim the life she thought she had lost her chance at.

Unknown Mozart Music Discovered in Germany
A previously unknown piece of music likely composed by a teenage Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was recently uncovered at a library in Germany.
The piece, which dates to the mid- to late-1760s, consists of seven miniature movements for a string trio. It lasts around 12 minutes, researchers with the Leipzig Municipal Libraries said in a statement.
Researchers discovered the work at the city's music library while compiling the latest edition of the so-called Koechel catalog, the definitive archive of Mozart's musical works.
The piece is referred to as "Ganz kleine Nachtmusik" in the new Koechel catalog, according to the Leipzig libraries.
The Koechel catalog describes the piece as "preserved in a single source, in which the attribution of the author suggests that the work was written before Mozart's first trip to Italy", according to the municipal libraries.

The newly discovered manuscript, which consists of dark brown ink on medium-white handmade paper, was not penned by Mozart himself but is believed to be a copy made around 1780, the researchers said.
The young Mozart had been known to researchers up until now "mainly as a composer of piano music, arias and symphonies", Ulrich Leisinger of the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg said in a statement.
A list by Mozart's father had alerted academics to the existence of "many other chamber music compositions" by the young artist, which were all thought to have been lost until the emergence of the string trio, Leisinger said.
"Since the inspiration for this apparently came from Mozart's sister, it is tempting to imagine that she kept the work as a memento of her brother," Leisinger said.
Born in 1756, Mozart was a child prodigy and began composing at a very early age under his father's guidance.
The piece was performed by a string trio at the unveiling of the new Koechel catalog in the Austrian city of Salzburg on Thursday. It will receive its German premiere at the Leipzig Opera on Saturday.

Impression now: he is really smart and funny! A residential V expert/someone to yap about 1700s drama to. Also, super impressive that he reads academic articles and books in his free time as a freshman I myself only vaguely remember rewatching It's Always Sunny and SNL and not much else
Aaafgsdjkfhg thank you, I definitely haven't reread this like five times already--
(ironically, this has also reminded me that I want to get back into SNL lol)
