new funky dream last night

main character was a ghost who fought in WWI. didn't die in it though - lived and ended up writing a book about the war that was lauded as groundbreaking and intense and somehow achingly sweet (i think he wrote it to immortalize someone he loved who did not make it through). when he was alive everybody hounded him for a sequel or for him to write more books and he just... never did. he wrote the one book he needed to.

his ghost looked pretty young, but he died older than he looked

and he found himself at this apartment complex where he was told to find this girl and have tea with her, and she could help him rest

and here's the thing. she was a perfectly normal looking girl. you had tea with her and she quizzed you up and down your family tree to find someone who was still alive and then she would have tea with that person as well, and somehow that would make you move on

(our main character didn't have any living relatives that he knew of)

but even though she looked normal, it didn't feel normal

I just remember her looking and it didn't feel like it was something human looking at me. it felt like there were suddenly a million eyes on me. that something massive and terrifying and beyond my comprehension was just out of sight behind me, with hungry eyes. the whole goosebumps on your arms and a shiver down your spine experience.

i just remember having tea with her and thinking the whole time that this whole tea thing was 'the gentle way'. and i didn't want to find out what the ungentle way was.

in boring adult annoyances, i recently converted my checking account to a different type of checking account with the same credit union. i've done this a couple times over the years cuz it's the same checking account my dad helped me set up when i was 13 and this CU is still my primary financial institution. asked the banker

"will my account number remain the same?"

"yes, we're just converting it to a different type of the same account!"

"so my direct deposit and autopays won't be impacted?"

"correct!"

"and i can still use the same debit card i've been using for the last ~6 years!"

"absolutely!"

"great, let's do it."

fast forward to this week, when three of my autopay bills bounced, my debit card isn't working, and a closer look at my account number shows a 1-digit change at the end. go back to the same branch like "hey no offense but what the fuck??"

different banker takes a look at my accounts, makes a Face, and politely casually asks "so where did you go to make the switch? :)"

"here, this branch. that person over there was actually the one who helped me."

The Face intensifies. ".....Ah. I See. well, it looks like the way the changes were made may have Disrupted some things. you're gonna need a new debit card, etc, i'll get that printed for you ASAP."

[5 minutes later the banker who fucked up the first transaction sheepishly approaches me to hand over my new debit card & apologize profusely.]

Applied to a patent law firm. They had me spend hours on a really specifically tailored CV, covering letter, and two pieces of writing. Don't use AI, they said - wasn't going to do that anyway.

I received a rejection email. The wording is identical to that of many other rejection emails I've received over the months. What are the odds, I think to myself, that this is defacto ChatGPT. So I ask the devil itself to write me a rejection letter for a job applicant who underwent a pre-screening process.

Lo and fucking behold, the rejection email I received from this law firm, verbatim, stares me right in the dick. They would genuinely rather violate their own website-published stance on generative AI than spend a minute writing a simple rejection email to a candidate who spent hours applying. Cunts, the lot of them.

My careers advisor keeps emphasising how rarely teaching apprenticeships in the local area crop up, so I feel pretty good about the fact that I've found and applied to two within the last month.
