[ im only a new reader, so im still working on the reading daily thing ]

time it took me - 2-3 days (i was really into it lol)

chapters - 47 + epilogue, and there are notes from the Willow Book at the end (i actually typed the whole thing up lmao ( x ) )

genre - historical / realistic fiction

5/5 stars (but my standards are really fucking low, so don’t trust me)

honest opinion - I loved it. It was a great book for me. I loved the MC (stands for Main Character), and it was just a great book all around. I can't put my opinion into words, but I'd highly recommend it, but if you've faced sexual abuse and/or teen pregnancy I might pass it up, as it may be triggering.

basic summary (no major spoilers) (im writing this 3-4 months after reading the book, so sorry if a bit inaccurate) -

Takes place in 1910s-1920s (WWI), Nova Scotia. Basically Dora Rare (first daughter in 5 generations of Rares), is drawn to Miss Babineau, a midwife and eventually after a few years becomes a midwife herself. But soon Dr. Gilbert Thomas, comes by and brings promises of quick, painless birth, and now many people start to question Babineau’s methods. Miss B disappears, and now Dora has to fight for her traditions.

in depth ‘summary’ (spoilers. and a whole lot of them) !!CW!! physical abuse, sexual abuse(?), few sex scenes -

Alrightie, buckle up.

“On the evening of a full moon in June, Silent went out in his canoe to catch the shad that were spawning around the tip of Cape Split. As the night wore on, Annie began to worry that some ill had befallen her love. . . . She walked to the cove where they had first met and began to call to him, promising her heart, her fidelity and a thousand loves to his name. The moon, seeing Annie’s sadness, began to sing, forcing the waves inland, strong and fast, bringing Silent safely back to his lover. Since that time, every child born from the Rare name has been male, and even now, when the moon is full, you can hear her voice, the voice of the moon, singing sailors home.” < why all Rare children have been men (for past 5 gen) >

Dora Rare is the only daughter in 5 generations of Rares. When Dora is first mentioned, she is 17 years old, and has 6 older brothers. Marie Babineau drags Dora to Mrs. Experience Ketch’s 13th kid, which would be a very prominent memory. Anyway if she didn’t give birth to this child today, she’d die. So she did, but she did not want her child. She pushed him away. So he died. Mr. Ketch is not deserving to be called a father, but here we are. Being the 1910s, he was a sexist wanker. “’I don’t trust nothin’ that can’t piss standin’ up.”’ like bitch who the fuck do you think you are??

Mrs. Ketch is a victim of serious domestic abuse, if the amount of children didn’t tell you otherwise (women can choose to have this many children, but... holy fuck.)

Archer, someone who Dora is sorta fond of (its been a while, dont remember her feelings), didn’t wish to fight in the war, but Grace and Precious really didn’t fucking like that. “’If I could, I’d march through Europe myself, killing Huns right and left, gutting them with a bayonet and crushing their skulls with the heel of my boot. But I can’t, and neither can any other woman who might wish for victory over evil... and neither can these boys who are too young to serve their king.’ She glared at Archer. ’But you can’” Mate. Take notes from Mulan. Masquerade as a man and beat them all. Fucking coward.

After Archer drags Dora to an empty room, Dora starts to become a horny fuck, and he begins undressing her, she mentions that that was her first kiss, and this Archer hoe backs off, and leaves.

Dr. Thomas comes bearing promises of quick and painless births. He makes Miss B and Dora seem like they’re using wooden tools and sawing a woman in half to get her baby out and taping her back together. Like stfu.

Well, a chapter or 2 later, Dora learns that she is marrying Archer, and she can’t refuse it.

A couple pages later, on the start of chapter 18, B orders Dora to get her 2 long-handled spoons and to grease them up with tallow, to get a teacup cover out from Grace Hutner’s sweet spot, cause she’s a horndog.

On the day before their wedding night, Archer wants Dora to give him a bj. A motherfucking blowjob. As a thanks for the permission to marry him.

“Come on, Dorrie. Just get on your knees. It won’t take long, no one needs to know. Now open up that mouth and take me in.” im not even going to say anything.

Anyway, the day before Dora has to marry Archer Bigelow, Miss B dies. :(

Archer wants Dora to give up the midwifery stuff (i think its sorta cool tbh, but k mate). This horny fuck wants sex every damn night. The book mentions the ‘supposed to hurt the first time’ and ‘breaking a woman in’ and just to let you know, the book talks like this bc it’s set in the 1910s-1920s, but irl, it doesn’t have to hurt the first time, i don’t think (but i havent fucked yet, and i dont plan to so idk), and breaking a woman in makes it sound like an object of some sort.

On page 174, Archer attempts to punch her, but he misses and makes a hole in the wall.

Dora gives in to sex when she doesn’t want to, and bc of her ‘obligations as a wife’ he treats her more like a sex toy than a human being. (not every guy is a piece of shit in this book, just most of them)

She heads to Dr. Thomas through a friend or her familys advice, and is diagnosed with hysteria, which is probably just ignored horniness, or a high libido or smth, the Doc basically uses a vibrator thing on her and the book states it’s better than what she’s felt in the arms of her husband.

(im wrapping this up cause my fingers are cold)

Influenza starts to pop up, and after Dora is outcasted for her practices, she goes to one of her older brothers.

Brady Ketch, husband of Experience Ketch, dumps his beat up and bruised pregnant 13-year old daughter on Dora’s doorstep, she dies, but delivers a perfectly healthy baby that Dora adopts as her own, and names Winnie/Wennie or whatever the fuck her name was.

After she comes back, she turns back to midwifery, and bars Dr. Thomas with a pitchfork after he attempts to interrupt a delivery (not Ketch’s daughter, as she died in childbirth) (obvi)

Archer dies out in sea, after Dora didn’t give him a thing known for protecting sailors from drowning and to bring them home safe and sound. But Archer has a brother, Hart, and claimed that he always had feelings for her, and he was disgusted at how he treated her. Dora doesn’t marry him, but stays as his lover. Also, the epilogue is about electricity coming to Scots Bay.

There's a story about this guy that I'll have to try to find that im pretty sure is real (like the guy would have no reason to be lying) and he got in a fight and got punched in the face and got knocked out and he started dreaming that he was living out his life normally (but he didn't know it) and years and years passed like he got married and had 2 children and had lived an entire half lifetime the dream but all the sudden one day was with his wife and saw a weird light and he woke up irl and it turned out that only like a minute had passed and he had been just laying on the floor unconscious for like 45 seconds but it had felt like 25 years had passed.

Is that fucked up or WHAT

do you think eugene is maybe scared of long boat trips? i was thinking about it the other day, maybe he plans on going on holiday with his s/o and the only way to go abroad would be on a boat right? but maybe he would get a little (a lot? im not an expert on this) ptsd while being on the boat and his s/o supporting him but not fully understanding because lets be honest, no-one apart from the soldiers fully understand this sort of stuff, and maybe there's another veteran on-board who helps him?

Before we get into it I wanna say I totally agree n that unless u actually have experienced that ur rly not gonna understand what the person is going thru n this applies to all kinds of trauma but just bc u dont understand doesnt mean u cant do ur best to or that u cant still love support n help them handle it n it doesnt mean they're not gr8tful for ur involvement even if u dont understand,, writing for post war eugene is always tricky cus I dont wanna assume ik how any of this goes or the extent of what it entails i havent done this I've barely done any research its heartbreaking tho n unfair n I just wanted to say all that before u get into this cus it's a combo of both asks but also more of a touchy subject than I feel like I've addressed here so that's just a heads up but enjoy!!

I def think hes still afraid of boats big time,, so when the two of u decide to go abroad for ur honeymoon it's a big decision for u two to make one w lots of beforehand discussions n considering all ur other options but in the end the push of ur families n the pull of the convenience of a boat eases u both into the decision, even tho nothing about it u kno is going to be easy,, Eugene is p nervous cus I mean the nightmares have lessened n u both have been learning how to handle his flashbacks n the like but u had never tried anything like this yet so on one hand it could be a good time to test the waters but on the other hand neither of u have any idea how itll actually go

Even just in the car on the way there he starts to get shakey n then on the dock it gets a bit worse but ur hands r on him somehow the whole time either locked in his or on his leg or arm or stuck in his pocket n that comforts him, ur touch anchors him n keeps him from drifting to worse thoughts it keeps him thinking about u instead,, its till hard tho just thinking about it being back on that boat forcing himself to remember hes going to France n it's not occupied n hes not alone n hes going to get to see the sights w his wonderful wife n thoroughly enjoy those bright French mornings n that it's going to be quiet, no more bombs or raids or alarms just u n him under thin sheets hot n sticky n just together n safe

But first,, the boat

On the boat? It was rough,, every bit of turbulence n every odd sway made him anxious n as much as u tried to entice him to enjoy more of the boats activities like a cabaret show or even just playing some chess out on the deck n tho u could get him out a few times n he did enjoy himself,, he spent most of his time in the cabin trying to ignore the fact he was on a boat at all,, the rest of his time not being coaxed out by u he spent napping in a deck chair w u often lounging beside him n watching over his sleep carefully, also making sure he didnt burn n lathering her exposed skin in sunblock as much as u could as he slept

U two kept busy in the cabin tho I mean it was ur honeymoon after all ;;;))) so he ravaged u as often as he could bc not only were u a comfort but also a distraction,, u did other things as well tho like laying n listening to ur favourite radio shows or playing guitar to him or sketching him or dancing together or once even doing a silly little fashion show where he def tripped after putting on ur heels

He did have a few attacks tho but u had prepared as best u could n even if some of ur cabin took a beating in an outburst u had always managed to talk him down n he spent a lot of time in ur arms

His breakdowns btw would come suddenly when something would trigger him like a sudden movement or a splash against ur window n then he would get angry n scared n become protective of u until his aggression bubbled over into hot tears drowned out by ur soft words of confirmation trying to tell him u were on a modest cruise liner n u were going to Europe n that the guns n the bombs n the tropical climate were all far away n u would pull him into a cold shower w u n he would often (fuck u hard first then) just cling to u n cry until he could calm down n fall asleep n if he stirred in his sleep u would repeat the process until he could sleep soundly

He was gr8tful to finally be off the boat n back on land tho n once in Paris the two of u could rly enjoy ur honeymoon beginning w breaking in ur hotel bed ;;;)))

But then the two of u got to see the Eiffel Tower n the Seine n the Louvre n Notre dame n it was all so amazing!!!! U spent half the time w ur head in ur sketchbook n he spent all his time taking photos of u w ur head in ur sketchbook lol

The photos were brilliant n sweet n excessive n there were def a few of u bare n freshly fucked (pardon my french) w the Parisian skyline out the window behind u, the morning like shining thru ur messy hair like a halo,, but there were also many of him from the perspective of u kneeling over him n many more of both of u playfully holding up the tower or picnicking in front of a cathedral w u plucking at ur guitar or him w a bottle of wine at his lips

It was all v picturesque n romantic n perfect n u thought he deserved nothing less n he thought the same for u ::""))

U spent about 4 weeks there together n he had throughly used his time to fuck u in every way possible n use every toy u brought with but then it was suddenly time to go home n u were concerned about eugene being back on the boat but he seemed less nervous when u got on n he admitted to feeling a lot better after the first trip n this time he actually went out w u n u played board games w other passengers n danced in the halls n sang w the cabaret n he still sunbathed n napped n made love to u n wrecked ur cabin n u still listened to all ur radio shows n drew n sang but ur lives felt more full somehow after this experience

Oh n u def showed off everything u had bought is Paris n as much as he loved that silk dress on u he loved peeling it off u even more ;;;)))

He rly did feel better when u were finally home to ur little cottage for the first time together as a globetrotting married couple ::"")) he felt better that he hadnt handled it nearly as bad as hed expected n urs n his trip abroad left u feeling loved n cultured n more experienced in life plus u both had taken a huge chance n now u were better for it n felt more capable n confident that he was getting better n it was an affirmation that u would take care of him n that u would always be there for him, just as u had said in ur vows ::""))

He was happy to consummate ur new marriage in ur own bed for the first time tho lol n on top of that gr8 feeling it was just gr8 that he felt less held back w u there w him especially after the boat experience

So yeah a quick note I rly do think he would be terrified of ever stepping foot on a boat again n would refuse it n be vvv adamant about not doing it again for a vvv long time but I think he could be worn down n would EVENTUALLY be ok w it but maybe not this fast n tho I dont feel like I go into much detail here he def has a hard time on the boat as well like hes just agitated the whole time n probably was prescribed some medication for it if just some motion or sea sickness meds n maybe anxiety but i would say it prolly makes him drowsy so hes kinda out of it which keeps him calm but doesnt stop certain flashbacks n maybe he lashes out n hurts someone once in a while cus it's incredibly traumatic returning to that environment but anyway yeah he would be v fidgety n not like it but in this scenario hes willing to take a chance given how well hes been recovering n how much he trusts u n how much u have helped him n the option had pull so that's why but rly I dont think irl he would have gone back on a boat anywhere near that soon but this is romantic fiction so ::))

Also I have a v specific image of who eugene is w if u cant tell lol so I'm sorry for that specificity but I'm so whipped for him n his gal I lov sm I hope u enjoy n guys I'm so motivated to finally write out the storyline I have for him I'm gonna finally get out his fic ok I promise

1. A favourite character you have played.

well, this should be easy. tyshvan copperhelm is the character i play the most, after all. but... thing is, i’ve had the most fun playing more chaotic characters. so, for this answer, i’m gonna say fwoosh. he’s my kenku who sounds like mean owen wilson! but if you mean just my overall favourite character? it’s tyshvan. it’ll always be tyshvan. she’s a cleric-bard dwarf and basically the party mom

2. Your favourite character that someone else has played.

okay. okay hands down, 100%, tenny c, elven bard-with-a-secret-rogue-side. he’s tyshvan’s best friend, and he’s played by my lovely gf, @shfcapb! he’s honestly iconic. i can’t get into it all here, but ask her about him sometime and you’ll get some real gems. he’s married to @scottidols‘s half-elf half-vampire ranger emardo trex, and is teaching him how to read (’:

6. Favourite death (monster, player character, NPC, etc).

hahaaaa, fun fact, my main campaign, the sauce, has a negative death count. so npcs and player characters don’t just NOT die, sometimes npcs that WERE dead come right back due to absolute shenanigans. it’s never just “ah, we might as well resurrect X”, it’s always like... something no one expects? so uhh, i guess, out of the enemies we’ve killed, i really loved how we tackled a toschar chilling in a mage tower. we couldn’t go up to face him, so we just decided to start looting the tower while we waited for him to come down and face us. then we laid a trap for him, involving grease, invisibility, a griffon, and a severed hand. good times.

10. Your favourite enemy and the enemy you hate the most.

hm. tough question. technically, those would be the same enemy for me, bc i live for good enemies, but like... probably the enemy i hate the most is the lack of communication between our characters, so the drama builds! but, i also love it, so like... it’s fine. my favourite enemy we actually fought is probably our current arc’s boss, a bard named lakat. we met him for the first time the other day and literally demolished his army and would have killed him, if he wasn’t just an illusion on the battlefield. but like, we bumped into him for the second time and basically jumped him in his own house, almost wrecked his whole plan, and then took the captain of his bugbear army’s boots as payment to leave his base and let him like... live another day. this is particularly funny when you consider it took us an in-game year to even THINK about tackling kalarel, a nasty necromancer. probably an irl year too, if we’re honest.

12. Your in game inside jokes/memes/catchphrases and where they came from.

ohhhh boy, too many of those. but let’s go with some of the highlights!

firstly, halfling as a language? it’s just memes and jokes. halflings be like “haha lit” (dabs) and other races are like.... what the Fuck.

dm: alright, when last we left our heroes... who would like to do the recap?everyone: (dead silent for 30 seconds)

“hm. but that would be very interestingggg...”

“don’t worry guys, i think this is gonna be a chill session” (10 minutes later, we burn down a tavern, accidentally kill a single mother but save her kid, and resolve a bunch of character drama between a vampire and a god whilst almost dying ourselves) (next time) “i think this is gonna be a ch--” “NO DON’T CURSE THE SESSION” (even now, typing it out, i get shivers. it’s like our version of a scottish play. we have a session later today and i am fearful i’ve already cursed it by uttering the phrase)

“you wanna learn about... dwarven anatomy~?”

17. What are some house rules that your group has?

if you “bard to bard” (ie, sing/play music as a bard) you get hella inspiration dice. once, we had a crossover session with some other campaigns in a big boss battle, meaning we had 4 bards who could bard to bard. we wrote a HUGE song with a bunch of different parts. it ended up being like 5+ minutes long? and got us all like 4d100 insp dice. per bard. we ended up needing them all.

21. Have you ever regretted something your character has done?

in-game or irl? bc irl, im a basket of anxiety so i absolutely regret a lot of stuff, bc like, “oh no, that was not in-character, that was not a good decision, etc etc” until the cows come home. i’ve learnt to try to chill out, but it’s kinda a constant noise in the back of my mind.

in-game, tyshvan regrets not being able to save the mother that died in the original, classic “chill session”. she regrets her entire approach to her will-they-won’t-they maybe-relationship with the npc wizard, equus. she has a lot of regrets, really. but she’s working to get over them!!

35. How much roleplay do you like to do?

oh man. if i could JUST roleplay for an entire session, i would. which is funny bc that was not the case in the beginning. but as i’ve grown alongside tyshvan, she’s really come into her own. and with the help of the party, she’s been able to relax a bit more and be more like... real, as opposed to just churning out inspirational speeches. but that’s still her number one activity!

Yes! Everyone I talked to irl thought it was absolutely great, loved her character, loved the dialogue. The dialogue (esp between those two) was so stilted and unrealistic. It felt like I was supposed to think she was a profound, empowered woman, but she was actually boring and arrogant I think she was poorly written tbh. I couldn believe how mature and well handled the situation went. He not ready to be a father. And I not sure he ready to be a husband either. Months back a customers toddler caused a scene when her mom wouldn buy her cookies we had with frosted kittens so I made a latte kitten for the mom and showed the kid to calm her down. The asshole regular was behind in line and got mad at me out for making him wait longer by doing that and for always 부천출장안마 making his drink "boring". I put on my best customer service smile and made him a subtly dick shaped rosetta in his drink. The only thing I can say as a child of narcissists is you have to move past it at some point and handle your own shit. The posters who keep updating for years about their Nparents baffle me because it seems like they so accustomed to the drama they can just cut them off. It like, "You 35, stop talking to them already." It amazing how many problems one can solve by just not talking to people you only have negative interacts with, who knew?. I actually think using Neosporin on popped pimples (whether it naturally or if I . Self popped them LOL) has helped me more than using pimple patches. I religiously used pimple patches every night, but I liked the idea that I hopefully treating the area around the pimple with Neosporin and limiting the spread of bacteria in the area. 2 points submitted 10 months agoWhat didn work for me: Biore Watery Gel and the Watery Essence. I still found them too dewy for my oily skin, although they didnt give me too much white cast and they absorb well. I prefer the Biore UV Perfect Milk (blue bottle).I LOVE Olivarrier Dual Moist Toning Lotion! I received a bottle as a PR sample from Jolse and haven stopped using it since then. Not a twist. Just a failure caused by Poe being quick to shout the plan to evacuate to Finn, Rose, and the unknown (to Poe) third passenger. He should been more careful. One of the very first steps to beginning a muscle mass routine or weight loss program should come in the form of a good colon cleansing product. Over the years of one's life, the colon builds up a toxic layer that tends to cast off a lot of the healthy nutrition we take in on a daily basis, or, just acts like a glue and holds onto it leaving the brain telling us that we need more food while what we have already eaten is being slowly absorbed before the harder working intestines twist and squeeze out the toxic mess like trying to squeeze out half dried up toothpaste from a battered tube. The end result is unsightly fat. I know a guy who married an ex prostitute and had a baby with her. She pretty unpleasant and looks used up more than anything else. He a good guy, he came from a decent family and he has a good job. Its just that everything surrounding the game is a figurative (and possibly literal) dumpster fire, and that makes the game seem far worse than it really is. It a mediocre (if im being generous) sandbox survival shooter with decent 부천출장안마 shooting mechanics, and honestly thats enough for a lot of people who just want to turn their brains off, shoot some ghouls, and scrounge around for military ammo bags because you need more ballistic fiber. Nothing more, nothing less.
