#oh fuck that's funny#also my maritime SpIn brain keeps trying to make sense of this when it dont make sense#like obviously a wave hitting a ship doesnt make the front of the ship fall off and thats the comedy of it obviously#but like it would be rare if a rogue wave hit a ship for a rogue wave wont make the front fall off#(im just being really autistic ignore me)#a rogue wave will either cause like force damage to it like breaking windows and bending walls and might flood the ship#or it will just sink the ship. presumably. i dont think we actually have evidence of that because of the nature of rogue waves#theyre almost entirely unpredictable#and if they sank a ship it would just sink in seconds basically#unless youre the RMS Queen Mary and then youll tilt 52 fucking degrees and get 3 degrees away from capsizing (and also probably affecting#world war 2 in a somewhat signifcant way) before righting yourself#but yeah no a rogue wave wont make the front fall off#that happens to ship sometimes like the carl d or the daniel j but that's normally due to what material the ship is made of#again. im just being autistic here. the joke is that a wave does not make the front fall off. i just want to talk about ships all the time
Unfortunately the joke was that in this case a wave did in fact make the front fall off. 'The Front Fell Off' is a timeless classic because the way politicians and corporate executives try to minimize disasters and absolve themselves of responsibility hasn't changed 33 years later, but it was satirizing a specific real incident where an oil tanker off the coast of Western Australia had the bow section break off in rough seas resulting in a massive oil spill and a fire. The air date for the sketch is July 26th, 1991. The front fell off the ship on July 21st but this naturally took more than 5 days to deal with so this was very much an ongoing shitshow that was presumably all over the news at the time, being made fun of on what seems to be the Australian equivalent of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.
'Senator Collins' was also a real figure and the Minister For Shipping at the time, though in the skit he's played by comedian John Clarke.
I don't know the exact social and political climate of early 1990s Australia but the joke behind "A wave hit it" followed up with "At sea? Chance in a million!" seems to be "The conditions the ship encountered were completely foreseeable, this was not a freak act of God, this happened because an unseaworthy piece of shit was sailing around carrying thousands and thousands of tons of crude oil. We're going to put it in simplistic, childish terms to make it clearer how ridiculous it is that this happened, and how ridiculous the clueless politicians who are supposed to be regulating this industry when they don't know jackshit about it sound when they go in front of the press and try to cover for corporate and government negligence."
The "Towed outside the environment" bit also seems to be a reference to the ship being towed farther from shore in hopes that the oil slick would disperse more before reaching the coast and reduce the damage to sensitive coastal ecosystems.
For further context, here's the same two comedians 19 years later satirizing BP's response to the Deepwater Horizons disaster.

Today's Problematic Ships are Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239
Tumblr media
Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 are Russian-flagged oil tankers. Early on December 15, 2024, they were caught in a storm while transiting the Kerch strait between the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
When a wave hit Volgoneft-212, the front fell off and 4000 tonnes of fuel oil spilled into sea. The tanker subsequently sank. It was apparently not built so that the front wouldn't fall, off the "centre [having been] cut out and the stern and bow [...] welded together, forming a huge seam in the middle". At least one crew member is reported to have died.
Volgoneft-239 ran aground in the same area; it is unclear how much if any oil was spilled from it. All members of its crew are reported safe.
The incidents with the Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 highlight the risks posed by the Russian shadow fleet, ships used by Russia to evade international sanctions on its oil and gas exports following its 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. International observers ave accused Russia of using the shadow fleet to carry as much oil as possible no matter the consequences, these tankers not being as safe as others due to old age, poor maintenance, lack of insurance and classification, and unclear ownership.

Like to think that a lot of Arthur and John’s scars aren’t from gunfights or brawls, but stupid shit they did when they were younger.

Today’s Problematic Ship is the MV Ultra Galaxy
Tumblr media
The MV Ultra Galaxy is a 125 m oil tanker. On July 9, 2024, she ran aground off the west coast of South Africa, en route from from Malaga, Spain, to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. All 18 crew members were safely evacuated.
In rough weather, the MV Galaxy sustained damage and on August 18, oil was detected in the surrounding waters. She subsequently broke up, leading to intensified clean-up efforts from the South African Maritime Safety Authority and other authorities. The extent of the oil spill and cause of the grounding are currently unknown pending further investigation.

Is Daniel legitimately going to stay out until the last lap and pit for softs to get the fastest lap (which won't be a point anyway as he's not in the top ten) for kicks

absolute funniest thing about torchwood is how the show tries to insist at first that the rest of the team doesn't know that jack harkness can't die. jack harkness, a man known for his incredible subtlety and how much he definitely doesn't die on a regular basis. jack harkness who spends his days in mortal danger around them on a regular basis. jack harkness who has zero self-preservation skills anymore because he stopped needing them. we're meant to believe these guys never had any clue that he's immortal.
