I want to be really real with you all because I’m well aware that the reason most people followed me between 2016 and 2019 was because of my Fantastic Beasts / Newtina fics, and because I need to get it off my chest anyway.

I’m not terribly shocked that it appears that we’ll never get another Fantastic Beasts film again. The last two underperformed considerably compared to the first film, and both were in general less well-received by both the critics and the general audience than the first film. While the third film was overall an improvement in many ways, it still wasn’t the same caliber as the first FB, let alone the eight Harry Potter movies before it.

I am in two minds about this: on the one hand, I completely agree that we need to stop giving that woman money - the money she gets from Harry Potter and the Wizarding World is funnelled directly from her bank account into anti-trans groups. I hope that if people really must watch the money grabbing TV show they’re planning, then they’ll at least pirate it so as to not give HBO or WB any views, but I’m sure people will watch it anyway because people are nostalgic and they value nostalgia over decency. JKR aside, however, it’s the sad truth that the second and third films were nowhere near the same level as the first for so many reasons - the writing quality went downhill, there were too many plots and characters, too much retconning etc.

All of this said, I have to admit that a part of me is disappointed by the news.

In late 2016 and throughout 2017-2018, FB was a HUGE part of my life; it was a comfort for me when my Nan died, writing the fanfics and posting about the film brought so many amazing people into my life, and for a long time it was an obsessive special interest of mine. I have FB and HP tattoos (my first five are all WW related as a matter of fact), I spent so much time watching the first film and writing fanfic and I even cosplayed as Tina. Despite the troubles within the fandom I later had, the first film was still a huge part of my early adult life.

I’m disappointed because while there was an air of finality to the third film (which I knew they’d do because they wanted to see how the third film performed before deciding whether to do more or to scrap it), there’s still so much that we were told we’d see and plot lines that were never fully realised: how Nagini went from CoG to being Voldemort’s snake, the Grindeldore battle of 1945, etc.

I am also tremendously disappointed that despite Newt being the lead and Tina being his love interest (and the knowledge that they were endgame), we never got to see their relationship play out beyond the fact they clearly liked each other. We got Jacob and Queenie’s wedding but not Newt and Tina’s - we never even saw Newtina kiss, and they were supposedly the main couple of the series. As someone whose blog used to be “newt-loves-tina” and who’s written about fifty Newtina fanfics over the years, I can’t hide that it disappoints me that we’ll never get to see them again, especially given Eddie and Katherine’s close friendship and chemistry.

Part of the lack of Newtina is no doubt because of how dirty the second and third film did Tina/Katherine - you’ll never convince me that it’s a pure coincidence that JK went from “Tina is my girl” and shouting Katherine’s praises to reducing her role to a tiny cameo in SoD after Katherine publicly posted her support for trans people. Her slightly reduced role in the second film was more down to there being far too many characters and plot lines so NONE of the characters got the focus they needed, but the third film…that was definitely intentional. People have tried to blame Katherine getting COVID in March 2020 for it when the film didn’t start filming until September 2020, by which time both Jude and Katherine were doing press for The Third Day show and she was talking about her experience with COVID. The way Katherine refused to promote SoD (to the point of attending the London premiere to sign things for fans and hang out with Eddie, posting photos of herself at the premiere but NOT mentioning the film at any point or tagging it in her post whilst still tagging all of her stylists/make up people/brands) speaks for itself.

I am upset because Tina was my favourite character when I watched the first film, so much so that I cut my hair into a bob, cosplayed as her, my first tattoo was her wand, I bought her locket, etc. I literally saw so much of myself in her that it was a little bizarre: the older sister whose younger sister is more bubbly/sociable/considered the pretty one and who baked/cooked, the shyness, the sense of duty, the willingness to break the rules if it went against her moral code… I saw a lot of myself in her, more than I did any other character, and I was so excited to see what happened with her character next.

Most importantly, however, I am upset because while JKR is a horrible human being who I despise with all my heart, we’ve lost positive autistic representation in Newt Scamander.

I’ve spoken before about how finding out Newt was played by Eddie as autistic helped me come to terms with and feel proud of my own diagnosis between 2019 (when I first got referred) and 2022 (when I finally got my letter confirming the diagnosis). Seeing Newt be the hero and not be treated like a joke for being autistic meant (and still does mean) the world to me - and I know it meant so much to a lot of us who are on the spectrum who watched the film and saw ourselves in Newt, who saw ourselves be the hero for once. I remember going to see SoD on opening day with my sister and seeing a young boy on the row in front getting so excited at seeing Newt that he flapped his hands excitedly and bounced in his seat. I remember getting emotional when I noticed Newt stimming with his coat pocket multiple times. I still think about how I was lucky enough to thank Eddie in person for playing Newt as autistic.

It’s just another reason that I hate JKR - her bigotry (as well as the subpar writing in the second and third film) undeniably contributed to people boycotting the film, which has meant WB has discontinued it - and we will no longer see an autistic person as the hero. Her decision to go down the rabbit hole of transphobia (and a number of other different prejudices) is absolutely a contributing factor in the decision to cancel the series, and because that’s a reason more personal to me, I will always hate her.

Hello there! First of all, don't worry about "sounding stalkerish", it's very sweet of you to drop by just to let me (and by extension, us) know about your thoughts! 😊 The thing is, it's not that we met when we were cosplaying; perhaps me saying we weren't a couple yet gave that impression, but since you asked, I might as well tell you the full story?

You may want to sit, it's a little long (though I'll do my best to be brief) 😅

We already knew each other, we had been acquaintances for a long while, actually! We met when we were 14/13 or so (we're 31/29 now, I'm the older one). We weren't really that close, but we were on friendly terms and all that.

I'll skip the very personal bits which includes (but is not limited to) us getting closer to each other and stupidly pining mutually, but the sequence of events that led to it is one (!) of the reasons why I tend to say we're a "dazatsucore" couple. Because:

He was into me > I noticed on the spot, and did nothing > I was into him > he didn't know because I hid the fact > leads to him blurting out a confession thinking he'd be turned down > I do not turn him down but ask for some time to think things through because I want to be sure of my feelings first > not too long after I have an answer.

By the way, everything I'm saying gets even better (and funnier) when you consider I'm the "Dazai" one, while he's the "Atsushi" in this.

Anyways, about the cosplay shenanigans you inquired about; back when we were getting closer to each other (2016ish), I had become interested in BSD but knew nothing about it; I knew he had watched it, asked what were his thoughts on it, he said it was nice, recommended it, etc. He then commented that he planned to cosplay Atsushi, showed me the character and shared his cosplay plans.

I had only watched the opening so far (the thing that led me to ask him if the anime was good), and Dazai was the one who had caught my eye the most, so I said, very offhandedly, that 'hey, I'd be down to go with you to the con, I do entertain the idea of cosplaying Dazai'.

He was like 'woah, really?! That would be so fun!' but also got extremely nervous on the spot. I obviously noticed. You see, my spouse isn't really the type of person who can hide his feelings very well + I'm good at reading through people. We've always been a funny match in that regard, ngl.

From a quick Google search I did to gather references for the outfit, I could tell the two characters were a somewhat popular pairing, so I made 2+2, I also already knew he had a crush on me and just did nothing about it, like I explained above. So he had gotten nervous that people could mistake us for a couple because the two characters are (were? sadly) a popular pairing.

Which I did know... And again, did nothing about because while my suggestion to cosplay together was sincere, having no intentions of manipulating him or anything, that did work in my favor as well so two birds, one stone.

In the meantime, what I told you above happened and we started dating. And, for obvious reasons, we decided to go ahead with the cosplay plans 😌 I've never posted a clear picture showing our faces because we're not the best photographers out there, but here's one of the least terrible ones:

The icing on the cake, that doesn't have much to do with us, but is still something we remember about fondly: we're Brazilian, and Brazil is a very big country. The anime con we were going to attend was the biggest in our country but also some good hours away (a 9 hour travel away to the capital, to be more precise), so we took a bus ride with some people headed there as well. It's common for people to make these "con attendees" group rides and they're always really fun experiences + very cost efficient.

One of the people we befriended on the ride was this girl who, coincidentally, was cosplaying as Chuuya. Since we're a queer couple (nb sapphics who go by he/him pronouns) we didn't know what amount of gay was okay in public, but this one girl knew we were a couple, 100% sure of it and it was genuinely beyond funny seeing her and her friends waiting on us to just do something, anything, that gave the answer away.

We kissed like... once, when they were nearby, and the reactions were priceless, ngl. The euphoric I KNEW IT faces.

Back then we weren't married yet, so no telling rings or anything, but this Chuuya had gotten the vibes somehow. When I asked her how she knew before we even did anything, she said, just like this: 'it's the way you look at each other 🥺'.

I need you to imagine Chuuya Nakahara saying this, with this expression. Makes it all 20x funnier. Also the reason why I usually write him as a wingman/enabler in my fics.

Oh, and about the "he had no idea I knew all along", I did tell him... last year 😂 We were reminiscing about things and he went on a tangent saying something along the lines of 'I feel kinda bad because it was selfish of me but I liked the idea of us being seen as a couple back then so I didn't tell you the characters were a popular ship'.

To which I replied: 'Oh, I knew, don't worry.'

Cue shocked Pikachu meme for my spouse's reaction. I then explained that I was fully aware of everything all along, and he was like 'thank GOD you decided to play along then because I had no idea how to charm anyone' 😂

It feels good to put our silly story out there, I had told this story only to one person in the fandom so far (I won't tag her, but Katsu can confirm we're two dumbasses in love) because I don't usually talk about personal stuff publicly like this unless on a whim but also because, like I said, it's a very long story even with skipped parts.

Nice to find another person who’s a “secret third thing” about Hazbin. I’m making a cosplay for it atm but I feel like I have to carry an essay around explaining my complicated feelings.

Hello follow “secret third thing”. There are more of us than you realise! I hope your cosplay goes well! ^^ And I heavily relate to your last statement. I can't just say “I like or dislike some parts of the show” or “I have a love-hate relationship with the show”, my entire being transcends both of these mere words and I can't just summarize my entire thoughts onto a single sentence. If I did, it'd be a 20k words essay/document that took 10 years to make or it's incoherent keyboard smashing or meowing or barking or mooing (hyperbolic). It doesn't help that I'm (kind of) a veteran of this show and I was there when the pilot first released and I remember immediately loving it and defending it from (valid and inauthentic) criticisms. You know the usual “they're in hell, of course it's red/full of bad people who make haha sex funny jokes and swears!” or “people who hate it are homophobes!”

So immediately from the start, I had this connection with this project (doesn't help that I was a fan of Viv's animations in the first place) and it took me a long time to actually see the bad™️, I had rose-tinted glasses on. It was only as time went on as Hazbin Hotel (kinda) faded into obscurity and was overshadowed by Helluva, I just lost interest. I guess, I forgot about it. After some time, I decided to watch a Helluva vid and immediately I hear that owl guy moaning in the phone begging for cock and I was “???”. I stopped watching after that. Which is funny because when I first watched the pilot, I thought the sexual jokes were funny, but when watching Helluva, it threw me off. I guess it's personal growth.

After that, I forgot about the whole Helluvaverse/Vivsverse again and went on to other fandoms and also the fact that I have a life outside the internet. When I first heard that Hazbin Hotel is going to be on Amazon Prime, I was... “meh”? Like I lost all the same love or spark I had with Hazbin. That I didn't even care anymore, well, I did care a little, in a “I don't like it the same way anymore and I don't think I'd enjoy this but I miss it.” way. And after that, I forgot about it again.

It's only recently I discovered that Season 1 has been released and that I saw a Hazbin Hotel critical post. And just like that, I got sucked into the vortex again and now I'm obsessed again. Like old me who really loved this shit possessed me except they got fused with the current me who is very critical about this show.

Here's the beginning of my WIP for this prompt.

@milgram has also written this prompt, which definitely motivated me, since people were actually interested in it-- and you can go read that if you aren't satisfied with my incomplete story-- along with @gomen 's comment. So. Hope you guys enjoy.

Max wasn’t a nerd, but he did like Pokemon. Looking at Pokemon shit on TikTok didn’t make him a nerd. 

Everyone liked Pokemon! Everyone grew up with Pokemon and wanted a relationship with their pet like Ash had with Pikachu. And most people liked Pokemon Go, especially Max, since it gave him a nice excuse to not be in the house.

Either way, scrolling through Pokemon stuff and going down a rabbit hole of Pokemon cosplays didn’t make him a nerd. 

The person he was stuck on right now went by the name Rocket or “Rocky”, which he assumed was a reference to their first cosplay: James from Team Rocket. Which was also the first one that Max saw.

The third video on their account was one of him in both a Jesse and a James cosplay, doing the Team Rocket opening. 

(Max might’ve watched that video about seven or eight times, entranced by how amazing the cosplays were)

The most remarkable thing about any of Rocky’s cosplays was the makeup. With white eye-liner making his eyes look bigger and more like an anime character, and contour depeaning their features, and everything accented the colour of his contacts and the shade of his wig. 

Max scrolled through about half their content in two hours, everything ranging from Pokemon to Persona 5 to JuJutsu Kaisen and Bungo Stray Dogs. Max didn’t know what most of those were, but the cosplayer made them look so beautiful and interesting. Despite the fact that Max didn’t know any of the characters, he was always heartbroken through every angst post. 

Ones that really got to him were characters named ‘Atsushi,’ and ‘Akutagawa.’ Admittedly, Akutagawa reminded him of himself, and how much he wanted to please the Dazai that was his father. 

Apparently Rocky liked Dazai, which Max just did not understand; he did not seem like a likeable character. Hell, the character himself did not like himself— from what Max saw, it looked like his whole personality was suicide and killing. 

A video of Rocky dressed like ‘PM Dazai’ essentially flirting with the camera, captioned ‘POV: You’re literally anyone in the Port Mafia,’ made Max blush. He’d never ever admit that, but wow. Who knew a dark wig, brown contacts, a suit, and bandages could be so charming. 

Max liked his ‘Rin Okumura’ cosplay, which looked like he used his natural eyes and hair for. 

Well, not natural hair, but his actual hair. His hair was dyed a dark blue, but Max could tell it wasn’t a wig because of the shaved sides beneath the hair. 

He looked kind of familiar, but he was just… he was kind of just a white guy with blue eyes and short hair. And Max wasn’t great with faces generally, it was probably just another white guy. 

Max laughed loudly when he found Rocky’s Hatsune Miku cosplay, and smiled at the caption that said ‘look… my friends kept harassing me about cosplaying her, and they bought everything for it, so i guess i owed it to them.’

Not that it was the first time seeing Rocky in shorts, but Max did quite like the Hatsune Miku cosplay too. 

Rocky seemed to be most proud of his ‘Sigma’ and ‘Nikolai’ cosplays. Which, when Max looked up pictures of the characters, he decided that yes, Rocky should be proud of them. They were both very personalised, and Rocky did an amazing job of making Nikolai look as deranged as he did in the show— according to a few gifs Max saw. 

Sigma made Max sad, but wow Rocky was so pretty. With shimmery eyeshadow and coloured lashes that matched Sigma’s split hair, and beautiful lavender contacts that exposed just enough of Rocky’s natural blue eyes to compliment them perfectly. 

The first night Max had seen Rocky’s account, he didn’t end up getting to sleep until about 2 am.

From there, he kept up on his account. 

In every video, Rocky was so amazing and beautiful, and Max who wasn’t in any way interested in cosplay and cosplaying but anyone would be able to tell how much passion and dedication was put into every character. 

Just looking at him made him smile. 

He left one comment and a few likes, despite watching dozens of videos. He didn’t want to spam like and get Rocky shadow-banned. 

‘I don’t give a shit about anime, but you look fantastic. Just wow.’

And he finally went to bed.

In the morning, he had a notification; a response from Rocky. 

‘... What? How did you get here??? Wtf??’

Max laughed. 

‘Idk, but I like it here.’

The response came fairly quickly. 

‘Okay I guess?’

Okay, so...

I went back through my blog and deleted a lot of posts that accused people who didn't vote/voted third party as the sole reason that Harris lost the election. I can be a big girl and admit when I'm wrong. While apathy from voters was a contributing factor to why she lost (and why Congress Dems lost), it wasn't the only reason. It was a weird shit cocktail of a lot of things.

The Dems in Congress running their campaigns like way too right wing was a factor (I saw the ads yesterday). They essentially made it extremely difficult to convince leftists to vote for them because they all decided to cosplay as 2000's era Republicans. I understand why they did it, but they were never going to get through to Trump's base. And in the process they alienated the people who were already going to vote for them. Insert foot in mouth.

It should come as little surprise that racism and misogyny also played a factor into why Kamala lost (bc of course). Other factors include having to run an entire presidential campaign in 100 days (Biden should have dropped out sooner) and just generally having a disadvantage against Trump because he had much longer to run his campaign (4 years). She also had the baggage of her time as a prosecutor (idk if all the allegations are true or not, I just know it got brought up a lot), and the baggage of the Biden administration's unpopularity working against her.

Granted Harris didn't do herself any favors by campaigning so far to the right like a lot of Congress Dem hopefuls, so there's that.

I also can't help but agree with Bernie and AOC that she and the other Dems didn't do enough to convince working class people. They leaned too heavily into the fact they were just not Trump and not enough into their policy plans (which Harris had, look it up on her website).

The point is that putting the blame on one thing doesn't explain everything. I was guilty of doing this, and for that I apologize.

To be clear, I'm not trying to throw shade at anyone. I just feel that I was wrong for the original stance I took.

personally i don't find much issue with the accounts themselves but some of the comments and confessions are truly cursed 💀

Been sitting on this ask since I woke up trying to figure out why it doesn’t sit right but yk, here— I don’t have any interest in name dropping specific accounts or pages and talking shit on them (OR conversely praising accounts who I think are the "right" kind of fan). I obviously vagued a few specific instances I’ve seen of behavior I found inappropriate from online “industrial fans” in the original post I made but even then kept usernames out of it and even then I was trying to emphasize that all of these are examples of a larger problem, not that One Particular Guy is the harbinger of inappropriate industrial fan behavior lol. I already shared the bulk of my thoughts about “fandomizing” real life musicians and real life music subcultures/communities and my distaste for it, but ultimately every single topic (especially things that are ultimately not life threatening and I’d even go as far as to call a First World Problem) is going to have plenty of nuance and grey area and I think it’s counterproductive and even hypocritical personally for me to start making lists of the Good and Bad industrial fans/pages. That just as much goes against my view of the industrial scene as a community as the stuff I was bitching about to begin with.

I’m honestly a little nervous about the post I made getting a decent amount of notes to begin with because it’s not like I was trying to write the absolute manifesto on Correct or Moral fan behavior, though I think sometimes my posts are mistaken for such because I write a lot and very passionately (sorry), I was just complaining about trends I’ve seen in online industrial music spaces that feel disrespectful or rub me the wrong way, and ultimately was just trying to strongly emphasize that this subculture is an incredibly important real life community for me full of people I absolutely adore and I don’t like seeing the music or the people who make it fandomized or treated like weird quirky characters, with their experiences and traumas not taken seriously. Obviously there is a grey area to any of it, and ultimately I think stuff like memes or jokes about these guys, fan creations ranging from DIY’d clothing to fan art to fan edits to cosplay to whatever else, and even expressing sexual attraction towards them is generally harmless and normal when it’s done respectfully and thoughtfully, keeping in mind these are real people with real traumas, who are not that famous, who can and do look themselves up online and see what’s going on, or have friends who do and then send it to them. Like, I was planning to make that post BEFORE Ogre spoke up about how he was reading comments online about people complaining about the show not being as bloody as prior ones and how it upset him because the older shows were an expression of authentic pain and suffering and even literal self harm and this new show was an intentional movement towards something new and the fact that he’s in a better place in life now… He said that because he saw firsthand what people were saying about him online!

So idk man. But ultimately if you really really want my thoughts? I think any time something is described as “fandom style” in the context of real people or an active real life music subculture all of my hair bristles like a scared animal and my fight or flight response kicks in lol. And I ultimately think that y’all are gonna have to decide for yourselves what you’re okay with rather than ask me, because Lord knows I am not the keeper of all that is objectively right and true. I think some of MY opinions for what is or isn’t okay might actually be more extreme than others (like I said in my previous post—I’m much more neutral on RPF than many I’ve seen, which I think is a controversial take? I just think like anything else there is lots of nuance in that conversation. Idk.), I just encourage anyone calling themselves an industrial fan or viewing it as a fandom to try dipping their toes into an IRL alt music scene and start talking more to old timers and going to shows and clubs and making friends and connections that way with other people who are devoting parts of their life to actively engaging with the community surrounding this music face to face because I think it can very quickly change your perspective for the better and kinda demystify some of the more fandom-y mindsets that these guys are larger than life caricatures to be memed on the same way you would talk about like, Herbert West or Will Graham or whatever.

Convention Post

I remember as a middle-schooler I always dreamed of the fact of going to a convention. However, I was scared people would judge me or see me as odd, so I never acted on this dream. Finally, this summer I decided to stop caring and went to my first two conventions in Miami, FL, Supercon and Otakufest. I went with friends both times and it definitely remains one of my close memories for this summer.

Upon preparing for Otakufest in May my friends and I wanted to cosplay but didn’t know what the best options were and so on, so we put Kuromi and My Melody headbands and called that our cosplay. I loved seeing all the well-done craftsmanship for the cosplays and seeing the thought and work they put behind it. Seeing all my favorite characters and anime being cosplayed made me so happy, I’d often find myself just admiring the cosplays instead of paying attention to some events. For the second convention I went to, Supercon, the cosplayers were even more amazing, and I even went to a cosplay competition event to see all the cool and well-made cosplays. However, supercon was definitely not for the weak and I found myself exhausted at the end of it from all the walking. It also didn’t help that I decided to cosplay as Sylveon for this con which consisted of a large furry poncho in the middle of Miami heat, this was probably not the smartest cosplay choice. 

The artist alley was definitely my favorite part of the convention. I got to buy so many cute stickers, posters, prints, and figurines I can’t wait to decorate my apartment with once I go up to Gainesville. However, my most favorite merchandise there were the pokemon cards. As a kid I was a huge pokemon card collector and I played nearly all the DS games, but as the years went by I lost my interest and stopped collecting. The moment I saw all the pokemon card stands I cracked and I bought so, so many packs. I also loved to see so much Madoka Magica merch, which is my all time favorite anime, I never expected it to still have a living fandom. To say the least, I'm a pretty bad impulsive spender so artist alley was a death trap for me. I spent at least 600$ in total between both conventions. I'm not the proudest of it, but I definitely don’t regret it. Thank god my friends held me back or I would’ve easily blown a band. 

Supercon was definitely bigger and more exciting. David Tennant was there but god was the line long so my friend and I just took a picture of him from afar and called it a day. There were so many voice actors from JJK, MHA, Pokemon, Red Dead Redemption II, and so on. Personally, I didn’t care enough to wait in line or get an autograph but it was cool to see them from afar and for the option to be there. 

I didn’t go to many events other than the Cosplay Competition in Supercon. I tried going to a few Otakufest, however they weren’t really my style. I also was a little scared to ask people for cosplay photos but after much reluctance I finally asked. I got many cool photos of cosplayers like Lethal Company, Vigilante Deku, God Madoka, and so on. 

Overall, I loved both cons and I definitely want to go to more in the future and even possibly do an in-depth cosplay of one of my favorite characters!

I had a dream that I was playing Dragon's Dogma when a mailman at night decided to just walk in to "confirm my address". My sister and I were telling him to head out, eventually to fuck off, but he didn't listen. We eventually walked him out and he took off. He called us later apologizing but not really apologizing. While we were out there, we saw a bunch of political organizations tabling near a bar. One group was a group of Maoists who had every intention of "showing the uneducated the power of the vanguard" at the fucking Farmer's Market. I was like "Well, good luck, but I gotta say MLs and Maoists don't really succeed around here because you guys are terrible at understanding the material conditions of the area, etc etc". One SocDem group were asking people to sign up to volunteer to be arrested at Ron Wyden's next meeting which I thought was a dumb idea. My sister and I head back home and now I'm wearing this very comfy sweater that had a image of Mint Blancmanche cosplaying as Hatsune Miku while operating a drone. There are suddenly a fuckton of people at our place. They thought the mailman thing was such a big deal, so they were strategizing how to get the media involved, how to contact the post office where he works, etc. They exhausted me, so I started playing a new version of Steins;Gate on my PC which for some reason was in a tiny hallway on the way to the restroom. My sister was explaining to someone gawking that this version was apparently "more LGBT friendly" and very fact-of-mannerly "has a lot of sex scenes added." I get tired of everyone being in my place so I start putting on socks to head out, only a lot of them have holes in the bottom where I seemingly formed a blood blister on one of my soles. My alarm went off when trying to figure out how to fix the problem.

Finally started watching Yandere Highschool like five years late cause I wanted to understand the Grian Lore.

And, question.

Who on earth decided that yhs/ts Grian being super traumatized was a fanon interpretation???

Like before I watched the series I saw multiple posts complaining about the fandom making Grian look like a Sad Innocent Babie or whatever by painting him as traumatized and as mostly innocent when it comes to the awful things done throughout the majority of the series. I went into watching fully expecting to see chaos gremlin Grian who's a prick for no reason and actively goes out of his way to do crime. I read enough posts complaining about the strictly fanon victim Grian take that you can imagine my shock upon actually starting to watch the series and getting the overwhelming sense that a lot of people who were supposedly making him too sympathetic were actually underplaying the situation.

I mean, hell, most of the time people fixate in on the halloween arc when it comes to Grian Trauma to begin with which is actually being super lenient in ignoring.....well.....everything else Grian got put through afterwards (y'all remember that time sam came into grian's room, forcefully dressed him up in cosplay he didn't want to wear complete with deeply uncomfortable fake boobs, then locked him in the basement for days straight until grian screamed loud enough to get taurtis' attention and even then when he started rambling and screaming about what sam did to him both of the other's brushed it off as a joke and then made him walk around in that outfit all day while making various uncomfortable comments and even offering to give him to a guy that commented on the outfit at one point as part of some sort of deal which probably only didn't happen because they got attacked two seconds later and had to switch their focus to that? just as one example). So the fact that most people who offer up Traumatized Grian only use the halloween arc to begin with is rather minimalistic given everything else he goes through later. Yet ive still seen way too many posts say that even acknowledging that much is super innacurate fanon??

AND OMG YES, SPINNER APPRECIATION POST. THAT WAS THE EXCUSE I WAS LOOKING FOR TO RANT ABOUT HIS CHARACTERIZATION. LET ME USE THE LIST FORMAT.

My opinion on Spinner's characterization:

I have several friends that used to hate Spinner or ignore him because they were fans of the anime but hadn't read the manga. They soon changed their opinion after my explanations about the matter.

I think the worst take I've seen so far is exactly that. He's not irrelevant or useless to the plot. It pains me when people portray him as such.

Also many people write Spinner like very passive? Like if he was easy to please and he would only follow others? That doesn't make sense at all. He found his way to the League just like the others. He stopped Magne from hurting Izuku on the Summer Camp attack, he confronted Tomura on the beginning of My Villain Academia and pressed him for answers, he participated in creating the name of the Paranormal Front and on recent arcs, he clearly told AFO to his face he never thought about following him, but Tomura.

So no, Spinner is not passive or a background character.

Horikoshi even emphasizes on this by allowing him to narrate part of the MVA arc. I can argue that Horikoshi wanted the audience to sympathize with Spinner, because he's the closest to being between the heroes and the villains, a real anti-hero. The author wanted us to see Spinner point of view and that shouldn't be dismissed.

I also think people downplay his relationship with Toga. We've seen him worrying about Toga since the MVA arc and later into the War arc. He is closer to being an older brother to Toga than Dabi is, we must accept that.

Spinner is very sentimental, but not a coward. Knowing his quirk is not enough to fight a bunch of people isn't fearing a fight. In fact, I really love how the League understand their limits and never push them too far. There's no shame in any of it.

Spinner is not a traitor. He's a really loyal man and his also not a blind fanatic. Once again, when compared to Dabi, Dabi keeps being a little obsessed with Stain and while Spinner still stands him, Spinner grew past Stain's legacy, he become something more.

Spinner is also a leader. On the late chapters, we have seen Spinner having followers. Please let's never forget he's main reason to be on the League is to fight racist people. He wants to change the system in order to give power to the minorities. Whether the League is a good place to do that or not, it doesn't change Spinner's goals.

He was worried about hurting children and civilians. Just like most members of the League, he wants to live, so he sees no point in ending the world. He wants to make a better society, not killing everyone.

On the other hand, I love when people portray him as someone who's well versed in politics and social movements. Yes, it's canon that he knows his things.

I love when people portray him as a very good friend and a general good person. Within the League, Spinner was the one who connected the most with Tomura, who was supposed to be the demon lord. Instead, Spinner saw past it, he saw the kid being worth following and protecting. That's why he didn't like what happened on the War arc. He knows it's wrong.

I love that the fandom agree about Spinner loving music. Yes, he was probably bullied when a kid, so I pretty enjoy when people create scenarios when he defends little kids or other people with animalistic quirks from bullies and racist people.

I think we can appreciate more his background and his presence within the League.

For example, Toga is partially rejected because her quirk reminds a wild animal, something brutal and barbarian. She could talk with Spinner about this, decided she can trust him and tell him about her crushes and stories.

Spinner had also work before, so he could complain with Twice about bosses and noisy clients and such.

He also enjoys a good cosplay, so why don't make him enjoy talking about clothes and costumes with Mr. Compress?

He could also relate to having specific skin conditions, just like Tomura. They share video games, that's right, but there's so much more than this. Tomura is pretty smart and I bet he'd enjoy talking about philosophy and academic stuff with Spinner. They'd obsess over Wikipedia articles at 3am.

Also Dabi could learn a lot about Spinner. Dabi needs to grow as a person, and Spinner can provide him with both a rival and a friend. They have similar taste, they both are really loyal and full of anger, but they deal different with it.

And if there's something I like how is portrayed in the fandom, it's Spinner friendship with Magne. I love those two.

I think many people with more basic beauty standards reject Spinner a lot. I personally think that's why the producers of the anime has decided he's not important for the plot and cut him from most part of the arcs. This is so wrong.

I mean, I want more people talking about how amazing is Spinner skin and his hair.

I want people talking about how adorable cute are the blue dots on his clothes, about how he's a strong guy ready to punch people without being an asshole, without being a bad friends or a bad person to kids and civilians.

AND HE'S OVER THERE FIGHTING POWERFUL QUIRKS WITH HIS SWORD. HE HASN'T BEEN BADLY INJURED YET. HE'S OVER THERE BEING THE BEST SUPPORTIVE MAN ON THE LEAGUE.

Also he's pure comedy and highly relatable. He's humor is pretty close to our online humor and I think that's amazing.

So yeah, anon. I think Spinner is criminally underrated but I also think there's a loving side of the fandom that takes good care of him.

UUU! Tell us all about the "psychotic hotel roommate drama!" 👀 (Me: Oh no, I'm not into drama. Also me: This message. 🤭)

So this hotel drama started in 2021 I was supposed to go to an anime convention with my my abusive ex's in 2022. It was going to be me my 2 boyfriends at the time because it was a polyamorous relationship, A friend of mine and then 2 friends of one of my boyfriends.

Well after the attempted murder incident where where they have attempted to poison me on numerous occasions apparently the fact I was upset by that offended them so they dumped me. Well more specifically the 1st boyfriend dumped me the 2nd one just ghosted me since they were dating each other in addition to me. Overall very unhealthy very toxic.

So I reached out to a friend of mine who I knew wanted to go to the convention shortly after Labor Day but prior to Thanksgiving.. It was going to be him his wife and a mutual friend of ours because they all wanted to go I explained how much the hotel would be.. They decided that they didn't like my friend and didn't want my original friend to come but it didn't matter because he couldn't request off anyways due to a lack of time off.

Just over a month before the convention they bailed and they gave me a variety of excuses from we can't find child care cause our regular child care keeps bailing on us. So I told them to bring the kids along because there was enough space in the hotel room cause I had built it for 6 people.. Then the guy tells me that he It does not wish to subject me to his children because he knows I'm child for and don't like kids. I don't want kids personally but I have no problem with other people's kids as long as they are well behaved. Then he talks to his wife who doesn't think that their daughter will enjoy it at which point he tells me that and then proceeds to inform me that it doesn't even matter because they could not afford to go anyways.

I hit friends up, had some people Who I Found out we're going to the convention and they lived far enough away that a hotel room split amongst 5 people would be significantly cheaper thanDriving back-and-forth every day.

There's a local cosplay group on discord specifically for all of the local conventions and I had made a new friend in there and him and I were already splitting the room.

My friend and her 2 Friends had to back out right before the convention due to the fact that the one got an unfortunate cancer diagnosis and the other 1 wound up getting getting their car broke so they had to pay for repairs.

Now there is this person I've seen them on Facebook, karma I've also met them in public because I've met them at this convention for several years in a row along with I've met them at another little convention type Outing they usually dress as Disney princesses specifically the little mermaid and Rapunzel. They made a post on Facebook that they needed a room at the convention if anybody had extra space for 2 people.

I reached out to this person explained that I had a hotel room with 2 people in it the hotel room had 2 Queen beds and a fold out couch and that the room costs $600 for 3 nights 8 which when divided amongst the people people was $50 a person a night. Because I'm reasonable I'm not gonna charge somebody for a night at the hotel room if they're not going to use it.

They agree and are all kinds of excited.. They show up at the hotel just themselves their friend bailed they tried arguing with me that it was $50 for the weekend and it's like no it's $50 a night. They swore they'd get me the money and then They saw all of the food that I had packed for the convention that was supposed to be for myself and my roommate and they decided that that was also their food and they ate a shit ton of it. And they offered to get us more food if we need it because they were on food stamps.

They end up getting dressed as rapunzel for their 1st day. They paid $500 for their wig and this is a fact they are proud of and bragged about. So they end up going out and about and partying for a few hours end up in the hotel room and pretty much napped/slept off an on for like 18 hours, whilst snoring like a mother fucker. Which they did not disclose That they snored.

Saturday drama. We had to wake them up to go get breakfast despite the fact that like I said they had went to bed at lake like 6 or 7 the previous day in the evening woke up at like 10 o'clock for some pizza pizza and then went back to bed and only really woke up to use the bathroom. We come back to the hotel room after breakfast they go right back to bed me and my other roommate Get ready and leave for today. I showed backup at the hotel room around noon because I had some stuff to unload and I needed to rest my feet because my boots were killing me.

They are finally up dressed as the little mermaid and they leave the building to go to the convention. When I checked into the hotel room I had gotten 4 key cards because I expected there to be 4 of us. They asked me for my key card because they left theirs in the hotel room and they didn't want to Waddle the 40 steps back into the room to get the keycard. So I hand over mine and grab the spare because I see it sitting on the table.

Hours later I come back to the hotel room and and magically all of their stuff is gone but I don't notice right away. So I shoot them a message like hey what the fuck why'd you leave.. I get no answer I message again like Hey you owe me money for the hotel room what the hell. Now let me preface this by I was in my opinion relatively polite I'm using profanity here because I'm frustrated with the situation.

I then managed to check their Facebook and they've made a post about how somebody at the convention reported them for harassment and that they would like to know who did it among other things

Then it gets into unhinged territory because they are going on a rant about how they are going to take legal action against the person who reported them despite the fact that they have no idea who reported them. Now let me be 100% crystal clear here there they didn't think they could afford the hotel room but then they told me they would make it work, and then they talked about being on food stamps. I have nothing against social welfare programs and I am inclined to think that they only benefit society if they're used correctly and I believe people deserve help and that they should get the help that they need. However I find it really odd that this person has a lawyer on retainer. As I have a former lawyer for a relative for one and for 2 I've worked with a lawyer before because home boy here had a speeding ticket when younger that was kinda bad. Plus I've spoken with and seen people use divorce lawyers in my family

I try calling them I get no answers. The following day there is a post on one of the official cosplay groups for the convention and and they are again threatening legal action. Someone posts a list of messages between them and that person where they call the person out for being a drama magnet and how they spent the whole convention Deliberately avoiding this person for that reason. As well as the fact they heard that they were harassing children and that maybe they needed to lay off of harassing the children.

So this is only like the 1st part of the story.. If you want part 2 I will be more than happy to offer it up it's just part 2 contains it is more events that may or may not be relevant to this story but add a whole other level of fucked up to this person's crazy

State of the Blog 8.1.2022

It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

The good news is that after months of feeling burned out and uninspired, I finally feel like posting and writing again.

The bad(?) news is that it probably won’t be much about either Magia Record or When They Cry.

That’s right, it’s time for this blog to take another sudden and random swerve in direction! But first, consider this post a farewell and postmortem to my feelings on the aforementioned fandoms, and an update on what to look forward to from this space in the near future.

As is probably evident from my half-year+ disappearance, I’m extremely not in the mood to engage with When They Cry stuff. Last year’s new mangas taking any queer SatoRika interpretations out back and shooting them dead (ow, right in the headcanon!) was the end. And that turned out to be the final nail in what was already a well-built coffin.

After the disappointment and frustrations of Higurashi SotsuGou being capped off with my worst queerbaiting fears coming true, I just… I just couldn’t any more. I saw the rest of the fandom engaging with the new material, and I wanted no part in it. I realized that thinking about WTC was making me miserable, and I have so many better things to do than rain on other people’s parades. Seriously, if you’re still enjoying the fandom, more power to you! But I don’t see myself coming back for a long, long time. If ever.

Without love, it cannot be seen. And I no longer have that love, so there is no point in my looking.

My only regret is not finishing my fic, Cat Got Her Tongue. I was quite close to finishing Chapter 7, and I might still try to do that one day. I also still have the very extensive plot outline, which I might polish up and post here at some point, just for the sake of closure.

But as much as it sucks to say it: consider CGHT officially abandoned.

I’m also not particularly enthused to post about MagiReco either, sorry. I eventually did watch the last four episodes of the anime, and I’ve put up my thoughts on them in this post. But while the anime sure was Something, that something wasn’t enough to grab me back. I’ve even stopped playing the game itself. My feelings on MagiReco aren’t quite as bitter as Higurashi, but, well, I’d already been disappointed in it for a very long while. Now I’ve finally run out of patience and impossible hopes.

So what will this tumblr be moving forward?

Well... few months ago, my procrastination and avoidance of anything WTC or MagiReco-related morphed into aimless wandering through an assortment of many different things - cosplaying Rozen Maiden in FFXIV, playing lots of Touhou-inspired D&D, and catching up on a few books with Actual Queer Characters that I’d had recommended to me - wondering if perhaps something might stand out and plant the seeds of a new obsession.

As it turned out, The Locked Tomb series struck just the right nerve! The whole “lesbian necromancers in space” tagline already had my Attention, but somehow no one had told me they were also mystery/psychological thriller novels! Like hi, hello, yes, that is precisely my jam.

I hope you all like the disaster lesbians as much as I do, because I will not be shutting up about them any time soon.

So yeah, to reiterate: this blog will be shifting gears again, and if you’re only here for WTC and/or MagiReco analysis, this is your warning to unfollow.

Now, the existing TLT books technically came out two years ago, but as everyone knows, time is an illusion during the pandemic and therefore doesn’t count. As such, I’ve decided to dig through the entire Locked Tomb tags on both AO3 and tumblr in chronological order, a thing that is both reasonable to want and possible to achieve.

In fact, I was initially planning to finish all of that before posting any of my own analysis or fics (because I do so hate the feeling of failing to do my fandom homework), but at my current progress rate, it will be months and months before I’m fully caught up. And Nona the Ninth is coming out in September, oh my!

So, for the time being, I’ll still be fairly quiet while in the process of devouring and incorporating a new fandom into my brain, and I probably won’t have much to say about all the Nona spoilers and hype while they’re relevant. 

But I won’t be completely on hiatus either. I’ll be putting up giant reblog queues occasionally, and maybe sprinkling in some of my own posts that I feel most confident about. I apologize in advance if they’re things that have been discussed before! As far my adventures in time travel are concerned, I’m living in December 2020 right now~

Demon Brothers + Diavolo Doing Dance Workouts With S/O

Okay, so!  On my journey on getting slimmer, healthier and fitter, I’ve been doing Chloe Ting’s workout programs, all free, all really nice to get yourself started and feel a sense of accomplishment. However, I randomly found some pretty neat dance workouts, especially Pamela Reif’s, and I’m in love with the songs she uses, going as far as to make one with only 80s songs, and she included a-Ha’s Take me on, and ahhhh, resonates with my heart so much! Hope you’ll like this little piece of crack and cutesy stuff <3

Lucifer

Lucifer, while yes, he has an amazing body, he seems rather insecure about it, going as far as to use a spell so nobody in his own family would remember how he looked at the beach, so it’s nothing shocking to know that he doesn’t like to exercise when others are around.

However, when he saw how excited you were finding an interesting routine that combined the fun of dancing with workout, he couldn’t refuse you, despite his fear of embarrassing himself or looking less than proper.

Seeing how much fun you’re having, not caring that your face is red, you’re sweating like crazy, and you’re dying of exhaustion, the fact that the songs are good and the workout is pretty refreshing, he feels himself unable to resist smiling at you, and little by little, allowing himself to let loose a bit.

He is a great dancer, we all know it, so he goes all in with all the moves, no matter how sexy or silly, and he LIVES for the way you cheer for him and say how amazing he his.

Poor Luci is going to blush, unable to contain how much you’re boosting his ego and self-confidence.

Clearly, he won’t do any of that around any of his brothers, and will be extra careful so that nobody, especially Diavolo, catched him while he’s dance-working out with you, in fear of them using it as black-mail, posting it on DevilGram or just keeping the content for the future.

Mammon

Mammon frequently workouts because he wants to make sure his body looks good ( he is highly insecure about himself, so he thinks that at least his body should be good, if not him as a person, poor baby ), and he definitely loves having fun at the club, so if you can combine the two things he loves so much, he’s down for anything!

When you told him about your wish to start working out, while doing something fun, because the past routines became a little boring, he asked if you wanted to workout with him.

He was very shy and sweet about asking you that, because he knows that if you used to be sedentary and suddenly decided to workout, he believed it had something to do with insecurities, and he knew very well how anxious and nervous one could be when someone else is in the room with you.

When you accept the idea, he is over the moon with glee, and will find the most fun and cool workouts that the both of you can do together.

You will get tons of cheers and encouragements from Mammon, since he genuinely wants you to be the best version of yourself and learn how to love yourself and who you are, and if working out is going to do the trick, he is going to be a dancing clown for you without a single doubt.

The fact that you’re vibing so much, smiling, despite how difficult and tiring dancing could be, makes his heart melt, because you are so beautiful when you are happy, and he’s just...SO thrilled that he can help you in your journey of self-love.

Leviathan

It’s pretty canon that Levi doesn’t really do anything physically exhausting, only working out when he feels like it, over DevilTube videos, but nothing too exhausting.

Well, unless he wants to learn a new idol or anime dance routine, which is where he goes all in with no regret, not giving a damn about how he can barely stand on his feet, or that he’s sweating a lake.

One day, Levi was playing video games on the console, and you were searching random videos on his Laptop’s DT, and you found some pretty fun dance-workout routines that you wanted to try out.

Realising that they were already viewed, and that Levi was playing a single-player game, you crawled over to him, telling him to stop the game for a second and asking him about them, then suggesting doing some together.

When he heard about you finding about about you wanting to workout out with him, he started blushing furiously, thinking of the worst, until he realised that it meant you would basically learnt he same idol dances he knows, and you could do fun cosplay skits and karaoke, and you would actually know what he’s ranting about, he was in his working out clothes in a beat!

He was so excited and eager to teach you everything he knows, imagining how awesome you would be as a performing duo on a stage, dressed up super flashy and having so much fun while the crowd was cheering wildly.

Levi did ask in the end, albeit veeeery timidly, if you wanted to perform an idol routine with him in his own room, as he has all the best high-tech stuff to make his room look like an idol concert club, and he has the cosplay-making skills, so when you accept, he’s gonna faint from happiness.

Satan

He’s not too shy about working out - He knows he has to balance a working out, eating and studying to have a healthy life-style, so he does at least the bare minimum to keep himself fit.

Satan isn’t the type to tell you what to do, but somehow, the more you stay with him, the more his habits stick to you, so out of the blue, you find yourself doing random, low-maintenance exercises with him...Sometimes while he’s still reading, and you still can’t tell how he can do that.

From the many people he’s acquainted with, he hears about some succubi doing dance-workouts that are pretty entertaining and give you good vibes, so he asked you if you wanted to check out some routines, and choosing the songs you like together, you start doing dance-routines.

Surprise, surprise, it’s actually super fun, and the succubi are great dance teachers, so you and Satan try to sing some of the lyrics, when you’re not too exhausted and panting, or when the song is just too good.

It’s always been obvious that Satan is the domestic type, loving to do any sort of activity with you by your side, or just staying in the same room, or cuddling, doing completely separate things, and enjoying each other’s presence, so dancing together with you was real fun with him, especially because he didn’t have to be proper in any way or put appearances, as he does when outside of his room.

Satan would definitely ask to do more fun activities with you, including maybe supervised mountain climbing, horse-riding, swimming, painting, taking care of animals at the shelters and many other things you’re both into, or want to try new experiences.

Asmodeus

I already believe that Asmo does some kind of yoga and pilates daily - Not for a long time, but just what’s necessary - to keep himself healthy and in a great, lean shape, because having a healthy lifestyle means your skin is going to be beautiful and have that natural glow, so of course he’s gonna do anything to keep that up with minimum sweat required.

If he has a gig up, like modeling on a catwalk, a photoshoot, or some kind of important event, he’s going to do a shit ton of Aerobics and Zumba, maybe even Kangoo Jump for as little as a week and as long as a month or so, because he has to be perfect - As if he isn’t already, but still!

Since we already know he’s the kind to love going to the club and dancing, when you go to him, telling him about the new workout routine you started, since you were a bit bored of Asmo’s chill yoga routines, he was excited to see you trying out new things out of your own volition.

He will try to fish for all your favourite songs and get some succubi to come up with lit dance workout videos so you could both to them together and have fun, because obviously, he wants you to enjoy your favourite songs, and will do anything in his power to make that happen!

Of course, before you start working out, he will drag you to all the best sports shops and try out tons of outfits, and you’ll get matching ones - Comfy and Practical, but make it Fashion!

I’m pretty sure he won’t take it 100% seriously, and he’ll be all party and fun, singing the song out loud, taking your hands and doing random moves that aren’t in the routine, like spinning you or dipping you low, and of course, the occasional kiss-steals won’t be lost in the party, and you’re too adorable to resist.

Beelzebub

Well, this guy does heavy workouts, including weight-lifting and practices for his club activities, like Fangol, which is similar to American Football, which is very...Very Beel, to say the least.

He never pushes you to workout with him, but he did mention that if you ever want to use the gym and be alone, he will make sure nobody bothers you, but if you are in need of an instructor, he would volunteer to help you, despite going softer on you and giving you so many breaks, because you are a cute, little, frail human who doesn’t eat enough.

One day, he heard from Asmo about this super fun and accessible dance workouts, and he thought it would be nice to recommend to you, so he will ask all the details, along with some DevilTube links to such videos, and when you are next together, alone, he will tell you all about it.

As soon as he sees how enthusiastic you are about it, and you even asked him to join you, he will agree without a second thought.

Until he realises that he is so big and bulky that he basically has the grace of a wooden nightstand.

It doesn’t stop him from having fun and enjoying his time of bonding with you, obviously! He will do anything you want, as long as you’re having fun and smiling the way you’re doing now.

Not to mention, it’s pretty refreshing seeing you dance with no inhibitions, just throwing around your limbs and shaking your body like you’re free as a bird.

This is the type of life he wants to live - Fun, happy and chill with his loved ones.

Belphie

No matter how much of a damn sloth he is, you just CAN’T tell me this guy doesn’t do something like Yoga, Pilates or freaking Ballet, considering the moves his busts during does damned dance battles!

He clearly won’t ever ask you to dance or workout with him, because he has a reputation to uphold, he is the Avatar of Sloth, after all, and he can sleep everywhere, as long as he has that fluffy cow-patterned pillow to sleep on.

But one day, you barge into his room, all excited to tell him the newest gossip...Only to see him with music at max volume and following some random choreography, and you just look at him with that meme pikachu shocked face.

Belphie glared at you as bad as the day he killed you, while also blushing like crazy, because damn it, only Beel was supposed to know his secret!

You then grin at him mischievously, hugging his neck and asking if he wants to do dance-workout routines together, and he refuses at first...And second and third and hundredth, but in the end, he will give in, and you will dance together.

Sometimes, he will suggest the dance workouts with a partner, just so he could have a reason to be closer to you, lazily peck your lips, cheeks or forehead, while also being able to do romantic moves...Even if the song is romantic or has seductive moves or not.

It could be some weird country song about how cute horses and cows are, and he would still do something super cute.

And of course, after a well-deserved shower, a loooong cuddle and sleep session together, in his bed, is going to happen.

Diavolo

This is a bit of a spoiler for the lessons 26-29, but I believe Diavolo is feeling pretty lonely and cast out from the group, and he’s like a sad golden retriever who wants some attention and affection, so as soon as you realise that, you start going to him to talk about random things, send him cute messages, stickers, gossips, selfies, pics with things you found awesome or cool, and he super appreciates it, he’s so happy!

This made you start bonding and go out, spending time together, so you then explain to him about human habits, memes, vines, TikToks, fandoms, trends, fandoms, ideas and all the ape shit things you could come up with, like a grandpa trying to be hip with his grandkids, but he ends up so cringe and overly exaggerated that he’s super adorable.

And that includes the dabs and Egyptian dance moves he pulls in the dance battles.

Now, you don’t get those damned arms, abs and pecs (man boobs) without some effort, he clearly works out quite a lot, as often as he can, so one day, when he was searching around random things on YouTube, on his new human laptop, and he finds some women doing some super entertaining dancing workout routines, and he is so enthusiastic about it, that he called you over and showed you those vids.

Grinning at how excited and curious he is about your world, and since you already knew about them and did some in the past, you see that his eyes were wide and expecting, wanting to try it together...So you suggested it, and he was so cheerful!

Dia has Barbatos get you both some super cute matching workout outfits, and together, you start jamming in his huge room, not before you reminded him that this is more for fun, and he should just enjoy it and not take it too seriously, and he was over the moon, especially since you were there to share his enthusiasm.

Needless to say, neither of you had your cheerfulness and grins wiped from your faces for a long time, and Dia got to find out some lit human songs!

@avatarfandompolice​​​ is a blog that likes to misuse progressive language in attempt to make ignorant, racist posts sound more intelligent than they are. While most of their blog consists of arguing about ‘zutara,’ (which I recently learned is a ship name for Zuko and Katara from an anon), there is also a large number of posts and reblogs under the premise of being “hot takes” on how unfair it is to address racism in fandom and in media.

Avatarfandompolice is very sensitive about people pointing out that Avatar: The Last Airbender is not, in fact, flawless. That a show made by two white men featuring Asian and Indigenous characters and influences is fully capable of getting things wrong. That their western colonial views are influences all on their own, and it shows. Rather than listen to fans of colour point out things like these posts for example: [Link] [Link] [Link], avatarfandompolice has decided that such things must simply be fake, and has made multiple posts complaining it. This is not just regular ignorance, this is wilful ignorance. The dismissal of critique simply because they cannot fathom not everyone being able to handle the amount of issues they are freely educating others on, or people holding the ability to like something overall while also pointing out where it could be better.

It is my firm belief that you should never absorb media with an uncritical eye. If this was the case, if people just accepted everything given to them, then we would never see any progress. We need to be able to look back at something and say here’s what we did right, and here’s what we need to do better with.

The argument that A:TLA was made in 2012 and therefore should not be analyzed with a modern understanding of the world is downright hilarious, too. As if we aren’t taught to write literature analysis on books and plays that are centuries old in school. In particular regards to the whole cop thing... if anyone reading this seriously thinks that hate and fear of the police is just a 2020 trend, you can meet me in the pit. I was four years old when I learned how terrifying cops are. If your experiences differ, let me tell you that does not make them universal. And as for all the 20-somethings talking about it today, well, gentle reminder that as said by avatarfandompolice right here, the show aired in 2012. Little 10-year-old kids don’t have social media, (at least I hope they don’t,) and unless they grew up experiencing first-hand police terror, probably were not aware of it at that age. I do not know why avatarfandompolice insults people's ability to grow and learn. I can only guess it’s jealously from their lack of ability to do so.

Now let’s address their defences of whitewashing, which is easily the most backwards reaching I’ve seen on this issue in a while. Primarily their defence relies on four repetitive “points” —

Fake minuscule percentages to downplay the high prevalence and extremity of whitewashing in the fandom

Deflecting the addressing of whitewashing with rapid-fire fake scenarios and claims of “reverse racism” / “blackwashing”

Claiming whitewashing isn’t real because people only care about it with Katara

Claiming that calling out whitewashing in fandom is wrong because it hurts artists

I have only so much as dipped my toes into the A:TLA fandom, and even I have seen a lot of whitewashed fan art. If you do an image search for fan art, I guarantee within the first couple rows of results, there will be in the absolute least, a few examples. The idea of these artworks not substantially lightening skin is also just plain inaccurate. Just from a quick Google search, this is literally the first result for ‘Avatar The Last Airbender Katara fan art’:

Avatarfandompolice is also hyper-focused on the lightening of skin, and seems to be under the impression that this is the only component of whitewashing. I come to this conclusion because when someone pointed out the equal prevalence of depicting these characters of colour with Western European features instead of their actual eyes, noses, etc., they rip a giant turd out of their ass and scrawl the words “but stereotyping” over it. No, not all Asian peoples and Indigenous peoples look the same. The original poster made no such claim of this at all. Avatarfandompolice jumped to this conclusion all on their own... (which really says a lot in itself). It is entirely unrelated to the point. The point being the erasure of how these characters look, in favour of giving them whiter features. And guess what? This does hurt. But I’ll get to that below.

The lack of understanding of whitewashing is on full display when avatarfandompolice talks about “blackwashing”; the idea that colouring characters with darker skin is just like whitewashing. Firstly, there is no such thing as “blackwashing.” “Blackwashing,” “brownwashing,” etc. does not exist because it is a false equivalency to whitewashing. It is a false equivalency to whitewashing because white people are not even in the slightest loosing representation when a white character is re-imagined as a racial minority, whereas when racial minorities are re-imagined as white people, they are taking away from what is already very little representation for us. If we lived in a world where the statistics of representation were not so drastically disproportionate, then there would be something to talk about. But if you are really wanting to support equality, you should focus on equitably supporting those who actually need it, not white people. As for specifically depicting characters like Sokka and Katara with darker skin than what they have in the show, the same applies, (so long as it’s not racebending them as we really shouldn’t be taking representation away from each other, and the artist avatarfandompolice ridicules above has done no such thing,) because colourism also exists within nonwhite communities as well.

As for the fake questions about cosplaying, the answer is really simple: Cosplay however you want, but don’t make pretending to be a different race part of your cosplay. If you want to cosplay Katara, you can do it without painting your skin darker, aka brownface. If you want to cosplay Zuko, you can do it without editing yourself to look East Asian, aka digital yellowface. The racist history behind this is an internet search away, but I suppose that is too difficult for avatarfandompolice to do.

Avatarfandompolice has made multiple claims that people must not really care about whitewashing if they only call it out for Katara. It is laughable at best, and sad at worst, that this is the conclusion they come to, and not the fact that unfortunately Katara just happens to be subjected to more whitewashing than other characters. I assume this is from a mix of her popularity as well as being a WOC and not MOC. This is not to say that whitewashing does not exist with male characters—not in the slightest. Half the images on this “10 fan art pictures of Sokka that are just the best” list from CBR are whitewashed. Only that across fandoms, whitewashing is more prevalent in female characters, by my observations at least.

Finally—and this one pisses me off the most—avatarfandompolice claims that whitewashing is no big deal, but calling out whitewashing is too harmful to justify. How fucking dare you put the feelings of artists who can’t handle critique of their work (that they publicly share) over fans of colour, who are constantly subjected to seeing our identities and looks not being worth respecting. As if it doesn’t imprint on your mind from a very young age how only villains ever have your facial features, because they’re ugly and I guess that means you’re ugly. As if there is something wrong with you. As if respecting you is regarded as extra effort, and not just common courtesy.

Whitewashing is a form of colourism, which is a form of racism. It is the favouritism, unconscious or not, of white features and the erasure of visible characters of colour. It is not fandom drama. It is not being too lazy to focus on “real issues” because it is part of a real issue. It is yet another part of why fandom spaces are so uninviting to POC. We live in a society that favours lighter skin. Corporations make fortunes from selling products to bleach your skin, products to contour your features away or go as far as surgery, all to meet beauty standards set by and influenced by white colonizers. That does not exist in A:TLA, and that’s called refreshing escapism. But it’s hard to escape that when the fandom constantly reminds you otherwise. It is a perfect example of how the classic “just let people enjoy things” complaint is nothing but disguised racism, because it’s only ever said regarding white fans’ enjoyment, at the expense of fans of colour.

None of the characters in A:TLA are white. Redesigning them and recolouring them as if they are, be it out of accident or intent is wrong. If you get called out for it, apologize, learn from the experience and do better going forward. You’ll also improve your art this way.

Beyond excusing whitewashing, avatarfandompolice has overt racist posts as well. A Black fan said they like to headcanon Katara as being partially Black; “I swear Katara was a sister. Im convinced there ain't no way she didn't have some black in her.” Avatarfandompolice jumps in saying “She's literally an Inuit but ok” as if being an Inuk person means Katara can’t possibly also be Black. The OP never claimed Katara was not Indigenous, simply that they also saw her as Black. Black Indigenous peoples exist. Black Inuk peoples exist. It is overtly anti-Black to say otherwise. But what even is the point of talking to avatarfandompolice about that? You know, you would think in trying to put such a front up of caring about the Inuit, they would do the most basic learning of the proper grammatical use of Inuit and Inuk. (As is the case with a great many Indigenous Nations, Inuit is both the Nation and plural. Inuk is singular. “An Inuit” / “Inuits” as avatarfandompolice has used just makes their dressed-up racism all the more pathetic. It’s similar to as if you said “Chinas” instead of “Chinese”.)

But all this is nothing, nothing compared to the worst post I had the displeasure of seeing. In a single post, avatarfandompolice manages to squeeze in insult against low income people, Mexican people, Jewish people, and Black people in a mockery of financial help posts. Absolutely disgusting, childish behaviour from a place of privilege. As someone who has had no option but to make such a post before, more than once, let me fucking tell you that the embarrassment and desperation when in that situation is unparalleled. It is not done lightly. It is done when you are at the last resort of having nothing but hope that the combined generosity of others will be enough to save you and your family. And what adds a whole other level to the odiousness of avatarfandompolice’s post is that they specifically targeting low income minorities to boot. Because we’re all poor beggars, right?

All in all, for someone who prides themselves in calling others ignorant, avatarfandompolice has to be one of the most obtuse fandom blogs I have ever scrolled through. They are as vile as they are pathetic, and my sincere sympathy for anyone who has been unfortunate enough to interact with them. It has been a while since I so strongly recommend blocking someone.
