I bring a certain ‘all digital media is temporary’ kind of attitude to the house that my mother doesn’t appreciate

pro of having old parents and being into physical media lol my mum still has all her vinyl from the 60s, 70s and 80s and one record player from the 90s and one from the mid 2000s, both my parents still own their old cassette players and cassette tapes collection and their old cd players and cd collections and my mum has both her old ipods from the 2000s (one is from 2000 one is from 2006, which is now mine), they both have tons of dvds and my mum still has every computer she has ever owned lol and floppy discs and my dad still has his old film cameras from the 80s, one which has been mine since 2017. They also both still have every brick phone they ever owned. we had VHS tapes until like 5 years ago but my mum gave them away. it is epic can't lie

i try to avoid pretension bc people who are smug about dumb shit make me mad but i do feel good about having no spotify no netflix no disney plus no streaming services other than tvnz on demand (completely free) and arovision (supports the last remaining film library in aotearoa) and the dvds/cds at the public library and when i listen to music its almost always on cds on my discman or albums ive bought off bandcamp. if i have to i listen to music on youtube but my adblocker is good so i never get ads. and i literally never feel like im missing out on anything and i save so much money and the money i do spend is going straight to libraries and individual artists and the occasional opshop. like idk man people seem to be very reliant on slop websites charging them increasingly high fees to feed them more and more ads and i simply do not experience this and i want you to know that its actually very possible for YOU to experience peace serenity and more money in the bank as well. its not even hard. take my hand🖐️ come with me the wonderful world of not giving money to billionaires and never watching another ad again in your life

sometimes I really do think we hit peak technology like twenty years ago and we're just doing stupid shit now. Like bro, we fit entire movies and albums onto a plastic disc that our tv or music player just like eats and then we can listen or watch at home as many times as we want? Awesome. That's lit. Literally perfect. But now shit is just like being beamed to us through the air but we still have to pay for it for some reason? and then sometimes even when we do pay for it we don't get to even keep it? and the quality sometimes sucks ass? and also like ai and the internet are lowkey evil? yeah no thanks. I'll take the plastic discs. Those were pretty awesome.

i hate to break it to you, millennials, but gen z does, in fact, know what dvds and cds are. we grew up with them. we grew up with a lot of stuff y'all obsess over, actually. not my fault all the tech companies collectively decided to get rid of dvd players
