Season 6

The Dominators

Now with Zoe on the crew, the TARDIS lands on the peaceful, albeit highly radioactive world of Dulkis for a holiday, just in time for an invasion from the marauding Dominators and their Quark robots, seeking to bleed the planet's resources dry.

Oh lord, this starts out very VERY silly. Men in what look like dresses and boxy bleeping robots? Did we go back to Season 2? Although I do have a theory: given the weapons of the Quarks, their speech, and the way the Dominators address each other when giving and receiving orders, I suspect this was written as a Dalek story, but Sydney Newman or another higher-up said "no, no, no more Daleks for a while yet, we've done enough with them," so they had to quickly cobble something else together. Though it would make sense to have the Daleks here given that Zoe's only just learned about them. This story can and sometimes does feel like a bit of a reskin of that first trip to Skaro. Just swap out the Thals for the Dulcians.

The silliness and uselessly peaceful politics persist for three episodes, but, as has so often been the case, things crank up and the stakes aren't so much raised but rocketed into the stratosphere for the last two. Where this story really shines is with the Doctor and his companions, as the Doctor tries to stall for time, work out what to do, and figure out how to do it quickly. Jamie's come so far from being baffled by tech and seeing anything not human as a "beastie", now coming up with plans and solutions on the fly, and proving again and again that he's no slouch in a fight. And Zoe? A VAST improvement over Victoria. Always looking to make herself useful, cute as a button, and really smart to boot.

Overall, this one's not bad once you get past the silliness and it finds its momentum. I still think it would have worked better as a Dalek story though.
