fascinated by steven's nature as a solo companion. the solo companion dynamic is relatively common in doctor who, but it's almost always a male doctor/female companion dynamic. in its modern form, it doesn't really appear until the third doctor. but steven? it's only really for one serial, but he does travel alone with the doctor. considering how they met, that's... interesting. like so many companions, the doctor represented escape for steven. but he's really the first companion who can be accurately said to have been saved by the arrival of the doctor - i mean, the doctor most definitely "rescued" vicki out of a terrible situation, but there was a rescue ship already on the way for vicki. steven was just - alone, waiting for nothing, hoping in vain. and yet hope arrived: the perfect fortuitous escape, a little gremlin crashing his whole world (literally a whole planet) down. just in time really. at first it maybe even seems ideal. he can leave, and he never has to go back. quite frankly he might never be able to. but then vicki leaves. new people join, and then they die. and then steven's left alone. just him and a lonely old man in the tardis, and when they do land somewhere it's in the middle of a violent massacre. the doctor can't help. the doctor won't help; he can't do anything. steven can't take it. he doesn't work on his own, he can't handle being alone, and he can't handle all the suffering. he wasn't made for this. he never asked for this. but it's just him and the doctor, and someone has to stand up and be the hero.

near every fucking party in europe has moved to the right on immigration and are willing to sacrifice both undocumented people and documented/turned citizen immigrants to appease the far right hysteria. wake up, this is the issue of our lifetime, this is what we need to fight for, especially as climate change accelerates and makes much of the third world uninhabitable and as companies use undocumented labour as slavery. this is our hill to die on
