i was wondering if you had any tips for writing a story that involved a language barrier. would i write mostly action? would it be less interesting without dialogue? thank you!!
Writing Notes: Language Barrier
Language Barriers. If you work in an industry that is heavy in jargon or technical language, care should be taken to avoid these words when speaking with someone from outside the industry. Without being patronizing, imagine explaining a situation in your industry to a child. How would you convey these concepts without relying on jargon? A clear, direct narrative is preferable to an incomprehensible slew of specialty terms.
EXAMPLES of language barriers that prevent individuals from effective communication include:
Dialects - While two people may technically speak the same language, dialectal differences can make communication between them difficult. Examples of dialectical language barriers exist worldwide. Chinese, for example, has a variety of dialects that are commonly spoken, including Cantonese and Mandarin.
Language Disabilities - Language disabilities are physical impediments to language. Physical language disabilities that cause language barriers include stuttering, dysphonia or an articulation disorder and hearing loss.
To overcome language barriers, here are a few things you can do:
Translate all relevant documents into the person's primary language.
Use an interpreter whenever you give instructions or provide feedback.
Provide language classes.
Use both telling and showing methods.
Use visual methods of communication more than audio. Show more than tell. Explain with pictures as much as possible.
Use repetition. As with any new concept, most people don't learn something the first time they hear it.
Never raise your voice or over-enunciate your words. Talk slower, not louder. Speak clearly, not forcefully. People of a different language and culture can hear fine.
Use simpler words with fewer syllables. Be aware of the complexities of your words. Use more common words that convey your message in simpler terms. Don't talk down; just use a less complex vocabulary.
Learn the basics of their language. If you want to communicate effectively and build rapport, consider learning a few words and phrases in their language.
Have them demonstrate their understanding. Don't assume they immediately understand; check for understanding.
You can also read anecdotes of people's experience with language barriers to help guide your writing. Here's an example.
Sources: 1 2 ⚜ More: Notes & References ⚜ Writing Resources PDFs
Choose which of these notes apply to the specific scene you are writing. Are the characters actually trying to communicate despite the barrier? Consider the purpose of your scene. They could use nonverbal cues instead of speaking. When we see people who don't speak the same language interact, sometimes they still continue to speak their own language whilst miming or gesturing to try to communicate what they mean even though they know the other person can't understand what they're saying. You can definitely still make it interesting. Will you make the scene more humorous? Will the scene end in a misunderstanding, an argument, or will they eventually communicate successfully? Perhaps something in their culture overlaps that helps them understand each other. Or will there be another character (or characters) who will step in and help them? Hope this helps with your writing!

20 inspirational names for a super summer!
(Keep reading ’til the end to discover their meanings, readings, pronunciations, guide to etymology and history, and more linguistic knowledge!)
Is it just me or has this summer been unnervingly chilling for us tropical islanders? 🌞🥶
Check out this summer-inspired name bank I’ve been working on for the past 5 months!
Each name was…
→ meticulously hand-picked like exotic cherries 🍒
→ carefully translated to the best of my ability 🉑
→ and then packed with a mini beginner’s guide to 夏 (the Han character/Chinese character for “summer”, used throughout the Sinosphere) 📖
→ which contains its standard readings in many languages: Mandarin Chinese, Dungan Tili, Cantonese, Hakka, Hokkien, Wu, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese! 🀄
(If you need info on any other topolect, dialect, or time-specific variant not mentioned here, just ask away! I’ll see what I can do for ya!)
👉🏼 An incredibly versatile character, it’s impossible to run out of given names containing/based on 夏!
The possibilities are endless, and the only limit is our imagination! 💡
👉🏼 If we visit the Wiktionary entry for 夏, we’ll see a whole lot more linguistic variants & historical hypotheses on this ancient grapheme dating back to 2070 BC, and even a reconstruction of its Middle Chinese & Old Chinese pronunciations based on recovered millennia-old scripts! 😱
👇🏼 Comment “Wiktionary” and I’ll send you the link to read further. It’s very interesting to read, whether you’re a curious beginner or a veteran Sinologist.
❓ QOTD 1: Which name stood out to you in particular? 🤔
❓ QOTD 2: Do you know what the difference is between “reading” and “pronunciation”? 🗣️
👇🏼 Also also also, let me know what you think of this list! 📜
Is it interesting enough? Are the tables mathematical enough? Are my font choices weird enough? Have I managed to convince you that I’m secretly an omniscient Taoist immortal from the 16th century BCE here to steal all the trees off your backyards, or should I try harder? If so, what other attempts at floor-length grocery lists should I make to satisfy your most honourable expectations?
Remember—your plants are at stake here! 🧚🏼‍♀️🌲🌳🌴

Thanks @alabasterfury for tagging me. 🥰
(Go check out her Takemura x V fics Trust Exercise on AO3 — absolutely insane!) And thanks again — your writing inspired me to photographing this.(My work:On your knees)
I really like this tag game haha. Sorry for the late reply — I just got back from vacation.
/////////////////
Favorite color:  Orange — it feels warm and energetic, like sunrise and sunset.🌄🌅
Last song:  El Muchacho de Los Ojos Tristes by Soap. The prelude totally pulled me in.
Currently watching:  Black Mirror Season 7 — just got to Episode 4.
Currently craving:  Just wanna get off work early (or retiring tbh)... just to go home and work again — this time as corpo V in Cyberpunk 2077 (I worked too hard today, sending this from my desk while faking productivity. Sorry not sorry, boss)
Coffee or tea: Coffee!! I especially love checking out local cafés whenever I travel to a new city — trying their signature blends and collecting their custom coffee cards. Whenever I look at those cards back home, it feels like I’m right back on that trip again.
Last song I sang out loud: 《十面埋伏》by Eason Chan — a Cantonese song I only know the chorus to, but I belt it out anyway.
Favorite chip flavor:  Lay’s cucumber flavor! 🥒 Might sound weird if you’ve never tried it, but it's surprisingly fresh and tasty. Is it China-exclusive?
Last book I opened:  The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment' by Eckhart Tolle. Eckhart Tolle is definetly my spiritual mentor, his word dragged me from anxiety or any negative emotions every single time. Highly recommended.
Earbuds vs. headphones vs. nothing:  AirPods, all day. Noise Cancellation mode ON.
Last place I went to other than home:  The pool. Currently practicing freestyle swimming and loving it. 🏊‍♀️
A color that looks good on me: Black. Feels cool 😎. Also… black + red looks so good on redheads. (Now I know why I love Goro’s suit so much…)
Last trailer I saw: Zootopia 2. SUPER CUTE.
My username origin:“K” is from the pinyin of my Chinese name. I’ve always liked the sound of “crust” — and bread crust is tasty. So… here we are.

Tagging people.
first time doing this! Not sure who to tag, so no pressure at all if you’re not into it

OK IM STILL HAVING A FIELD DAY W PET PARENTS MEIZINI but aaaaaa about the parents meizini thing !!!
- anxious asf putting their nerdy glasses on scouring the internet for parenting guide books
-FOR SURE shopping early on; buying cribs and all and getting distracted (wanting to buy almost every toy in there!)
-In Halloween, Dani probably wants to dress their kid up in pretty clothes and cute stuff (like a princess or sumn! sumn cool if it's a boy!) meanwhile megan wants to pull some goofy shit like this https://rb.gy/vkwigb (maybe as a hotdog or sumn, she'll buy one for dani too lol), they have a little discourse that Daniela wins (ofc) but she just comes home one day to them wearing it, AND IT'S THE CUTEST SIGHT EVER she might even eventually agree to actually use it (but says next year she's the one that'll decide!)
-when the kid/s grow up a little, megan's totally the "idk, ask your mom" chill parent (probably got glared at by dani once for saying yes so dismissively to something she didnt agree with so now she leaves it to dani lol) dani's a little stern but not any less sweet !! theyre no.1 supporters probably all "youre doing amazing sweetie" mode lol
-ALSOO BEST AUNTS KATSEYEEE, theyre totally spoiling the kid/s. For Meizini date nights they probably leave her/them to the girls one time and come home to some goofy shit like the kid glammed up or sumn ...MAYBE WITH A WIG ON OR A NEW HAIRSTYLE...OR MAYBE COPYING MEGAN OR DANI'S HAIR IN PREVIOUS ERAS
#ijustsobbed this was a lot i hope it's not too messyy lmaoo
-m (who needs to go to bed)
PLEASE ALL OF THESE ARE SOOO GOOD I LAUGHED SO HARD AT THE COSTUMES THAT IS 11100000% SUM STUPID SHIT MEGAN WOULD PULL 😭
megan freaking out bc either she's gonna have to learn spanish or dani is gonna have to learn cantonese and she's not good enough at cantonese to teach it yet so she's gonna have to learn spanish 😭 "I CAN'T LET OUR FUTURE KIDS TALK SHIT ABOUT ME IN FRONT OF ME!" she sobs trying to turn on the english subtitles for another movie she's watching in spanish
megan hated online shopping bc she wanted to "test" all the toys out first. dani being like "wym test it out it's a stuffed bear" and megan is like "some are softer than others nothing but the BEST for our child" and dani goes along w it bc it's lowkey sweet that megan cares about these little details even if it's just an excuse to be dumb and play w baby toys <3
megan is 100% the passive parent and dani is the decision maker but they are both sooooo dedicated to making their kid feel so loved <3333 what dani says goes but megan manages to bring the fun back into everything and it's just so so cute not a day goes by that their little family isn't absolutely cracking up!!
KATSEYE AUNTIES PLEASEEE yoonchae would be the one who is trying to get the baby to sleep on time only for lara to be like "let's do full glam" and manon is like "and draw on a unibrow" and sophia is like "and megan's old EXTENSIONS" and when meizini come home their baby is asleep looking an absolute mess <3 megan thinks it's hilarious but dani is not pleased and now yoonchae is the only one she trusts w babysitting ❤️

gweilo is a cantonese word for white people that's sometimes considered a slur and I think we should popularize it
this reminds me when imdb parents guide listed 'papist' (slur for catholics) under offensive language. theres also vuzvuz which is a slur for ashkenazim (by mizrahim) bc thats what yiddish sounds like for ppl who dont speak any language similar to it

So I just saw [this post] focused on Tang Shen, and the comment about her name got me thinking.
And because I'm a giant language nerd and know where to look, I decided to look up the parts of her name.
Tang is a Chinese surname and can either be in reference to the Tang Dynasty, or it can specifically be the Cantonese romanization of Deng-- which refers "to the ancient state of Deng, which existed during the Shang and Zhou dynasties in what is now either Henan or Hubei province."
Shen is a Chinese masculine name (which makes it an interesting choice for her) that apparently means 'deep thinker', 'deep thought', or 'spirit'.
All of this is to say, if we take her name as the guiding point, Shen should be Chinese. Whether that means she was an immigrant to Japan, or if she's mixed Chinese and Japanese, or any other number of possibilities is up for interpretation.
But there you go TMNT fandom: Shen should be Chinese.

In the Wukongverse what is Wukong's and Macaque's singing voice like?
Oh I do Love me some singing hcs. Took me a while cus I bad at actually remembering singers. I'm just trying to add as many song links as possible.
LMK: These two's english VAs (Sean Schemmel & Alejandro Saab) have sung before, and I will repeat my thoughts. Whilst Macaque is the more "stage friendly" of the two and can interact with an audience and put on a show, Wukong is stupidly good at singing. Like, LMK!Mac is dumbfounded how good his Wukong is. Wukong's stage fright gets to him tho, so his voice cracks the second he detects anyone listening to him - only Mac, the kids, and baby monkeys know his true voice. He destroys everyone at drunk karaoke tho.
HeroIsBack: SWK's singing voice is initally very harsh (not use much in 500 years) but grows softer/more confident as he sings. I can almost hear it as being like the song in the film itself "The Feeling of Flying", just full of joy. Also dubbing bonus; Jackie Chan singing the Cantonese version of "I'll Make A Man Out of You" from Mulan (1998). HeroIsBack!LEM's voice is similarly underused but a hidden gem. Mostly reserved for lulling infant monkeys to sleep. A tenor like Thomas Sanders. Gets embarassed quickly because his singing voice "doesn't match his face" (Dasheng disagrees).
Reborn: You could say his warped view of his own demonic identiy hasn't exactly left Reborn!SWK a positive idea of his singing ability. His actual singing voice is surprisingly deep with a lot of octave range; example Jonathan Young. 100% would jam with anime opening songs. Secretly gets really excited when he duets. Reborn!LEM is much less confident in their performing ability than the other LEMs, his voice is much softer, quieter, and soprano-pitch. Ethereal almost; like Ben Whishaw in The Tempest. And this LEM might just sing "Ariel's Song/Full Fathom Five" too - since his six ears often "hear "pick up" songs of the future. May use his voice to guide the lost souls he chariots.
Netflix: This SWK do be singing, and he penned his own theme song! Hidden talent at composing? I hc that he's singing voice is the metal version of his theme as done by Voodoo Kung Fu & Ian Honeyman. Probably scares the other monkeys (sans Reborn!SWK who starts rocking) the first time they let him take the mic and he goes full heavy metal on them. Has a hidden softer tune only his pilgrims + LEM know about. Netflix!LEM would say that they'd rather eat glass than sing in public, but like their main inspo (Aubrey Plaza - "Get Happy") they are ridiculously good at swing/jazz style music where the singer interacts with/insults their audience. A good example of them singing (whether for a con/trick) would be Amber Gray in Hadestown.
NewGods: This SWK sounds like a smooth cruise /lounge singer. This man can bust out a Sinatra that'll make the room shake. He however can get really emotionally into the music and end up crying at the oddest songs. Good reference would be Richard Cheese. NewGods!LEM gots broadway vocals like Josh Groban, and will completely shred you with his Phantom of the Opera performance. Unless he decides to use his voice for mischief and starts singing filthy blues songs with his SWK.
2000sCartoon: I bet these two dont really flex their singing muscles much so they dont sound "good", but SWK loves him some travelling songs and shanties, and his LEM provides good backing. SWK has a crackly, higher pitched singing voice like George Salazar (Be More Chill + Percy Jackson Musical). 2000sCartoon!LEM's voice I can see being smoother like Ashe (of "to ashes" on youtube), and once he becomes more confident in himself; its one of the first clear distinctions the two monkeys can make between one another.
Meihouwang: I could see Shihou & Mihou having "younger-sounding" singing voices similar to Zach Callison (of Steven Universe fame), and Jeremy Jordan (Tangled Series + Death Note Musical) respectively. Absurdly good for monkeys with no formal musical training.
Smash Legends: This Wukong has a pretty good singing voice but he uses it for goofy "meme" songs (ex Loney Island) since he's actually a little mic shy. Has potiential for greatness. "Serious" singing voice is similar to Sam Tsui. Smash!LEM aka SixEars is a legit indie music star along the lines of a "faceless" nearly-online-exclusive artist - best comparasion I can give for his "typical" vocal ranges (remember perfect mimicry/pitch) is between Aly & AJ to Taron Egerton. Will leave the other monkeys in the dust in a competition.
No matter who's the "better" singer of all of them one thing is for certain; you turn on that karaoke machine around the SWKs and LEMs, and there's about to be a whole lot of monkey business.

What are some headcanon you have for China?
oh man, you've opened a can of worms!! note, that a lot of my headcanons derave from deep china discussions i had with wonderful friends on discord.
my favorite one is that i think of him as aroace!!
don't get me wrong, im still able to enjoy ships with him (i do like rochu a lot!!), but in the grand scale for what i think of what is the best romantic relationship for him: none at all!
i just can't see him that way. when i first thought about the best ship for china, closest thing is rochu but even then, it never felt right. and i love my aroace china headcanon, because even after all this time, after everything that has happened, you don't need romance in order to truly live, but rathermore, love. in whatever form that is outside of romance. i consider his familial ties to be one of the most important things to him because of that.
and also it's really comforting to me, because even as a bi person, it's good to know that romance is not a necessity in order to enjoy life
another favorite is that i headcanon that he sends packages of food to kiku at least every chinese new year. ive been having a lot of discussions in regards to yao and kiku's enstranged relationship, to one point in time where they just don't know how to interact with each other especially after ww2. kiku would no longer be there at family reunions or celebrate chinese new year. id imagine there would be zero contact for the first few years after the war and then one day, kiku just get this random package at his door from an anonymous sender and no return address. inside, is his favorite snacks and ingredients for him to make a meal for the lunar new year. japan wouldn't say anything of course, but yao continues to send it year after year.
that said, id imagine food would be a crucial love language for yao. i have a cantonese friend who really emphasized on this fact about chinese culture. food is literally one of his best ways to show that he cares. a package to an enstranged kiku. a street snack at hong kong's doorstep. baked treats for macau. a recipe for taiwan. feeling down? let's have some dim sum and talk about it. its subtle, but it goes a long way. especially since he is an amazing cook.
and also he DEFINITELY has raised more nations than the current east asian family in the past. new nations come and go all the time, so not only he has raised them, im pretty sure he outlived a lot of them.
last one, but i also think a lot about when he was young. we do know from the davie comic that nations don't exactly realize they're.. different from humans at a young age. id actually imagine china to be raised by humans first rather than nations. id imagine when china first came to be, he'd rathermore wander amongst his people and their villages and got to spend time with the landscape before actually coming in contact with his government. of course since he is a child, people would take him in. as the people around him get older and he doesn't, the phenomenon around him starts to swirl and word gets out and that's how i imagine him coming into first contact with his government. and also isn't it canon that if you spend too much time around a nation as a human, you'd go crazy? that will def have its effects as well. just this poor baby yao that like.. has no clue what's going on and why he is so different from everybody else. and id imagine this is something he had to figure out on his own instead of other nations guiding him. id imagine it would be a while until je met someone else just like him.
thank u for asking!! this was very long but i hope this suffices ^_^

the second psych abolition chat has concluded! our next chat will be on monday, july 15th at 9pm est | 1am utc. the link is here + the password, if it asks for one, is “frogs” (i think the link is autofilling the password).
here are some things we chatted about:
need for more resources (e.g someone to clean home, provide food, companionship, emotional support) which are not locked behind engagement with the psych system
emphasizing a lack of choice/autonomy in medication, rather than focusing on "forced to take meds" vs "denied meds"
hospitals/institutions as spaces where all emotional responses or needs are pathologized + residents are expected to tolerate things they would not be expected to tolerate in the outside world
the difficulty in offering legal advice to combat sectioning since laws vary drastically
here are some works/resources we brainstormed creating:
we continued discussion on a guide to surviving institutionalization! participants suggested creating two, one which would be more open + viewable on a device while the other one would be more restrictive + physical copy without staples in order to accommodate people in institutions that will confiscate 'contraband'
some ideas for this guide: encourage future planning, explain how to 'fake it out', legal resources
one participant expressed interest in translating harm reduction/psych abolition resources into cantonese but is unsure how to get started with this!
as a reminder, ppl can also join the madness + liberation forum to discuss these things by filling out the google form here. all forum applications i’ve received should have been pushed through, so if you filled it out + didn’t receive a response, that means i missed you somehow + you should dm me or fill it out again.

oyster eater - pronunciation guide
or: anglophone readers, you know the drill!
a slightly messy guide to help you with some of the mandarin and french words that keep popping up in oyster eater - if you like, you can copy and paste the characters into google translate so that you can get that to say them out loud for you :D

Tumblr media
丽华 lì huá: This is Alexis’ name (‘beautiful’, ‘flourishing’, ‘beautiful flower’) and is pronounced lee (as in the English leave) hwa (similar feeling to the onomatopoeia of a kiss sound mwah). Vincent sometimes calls her 丽丽 li4 li4, which is similarly pronounced lee lee, just as you would expect.
志伟 zhì wěi: Vincent’s name (‘greatness’, ‘extraordinary purpose’, ‘ambition’), pronounced juh (like the French je, as in je m’appelle) way (as in the English way, from runway or subway).
爸爸 bà ba: ‘father’ or ‘dad’ – pronounced ba as in the English baptism.
They sometimes append 姐 -jiě (‘big sister’, pronounced like jee-eh, jee as in the ge in the English genie, and eh as in the first e in ever) or 弟 -dì (‘little brother’, pronounced like dee) to their names, so Vincent might call Alexis 丽姐 lì jiě (‘older sister Alexis’, lee jee-eh) and Alexis might call Vincent 志弟 zhì dì (‘younger brother Vincent, juh dee).
They might also do a similar thing with 小 xiǎo, meaning ‘little’ (pronounced like shao, like the show in shower), like Alexis or William calling Vincent 小志 xiǎo zhì (‘little Vincent’, shao juh).
发簪 fā zān: a type of long Chinese hairpin used to tie one’s hair up (pronounced fa as in father and zan as in the san of sand). You know how in Hollywood films, they like to lean on lazy cultural stereotypes by making a Chinese lady put her hair up in a bun using a chopstick? Imagine that the chopstick is an actual, nicely decorated hairpin, and that’s basically a fa zan.)
à table: Literally ‘to the table’, i.e. calling people to come and eat - functionally, it’s like saying ‘dinner’s ready!’ or ‘food’s on the table!’
早啊 zǎo ā: A casual way to say ‘morning!’
粥 zhōu: Right, this is going to get a bit confusing so bear with me – this is the Mandarin word for congee, which is a type of rice porridge that’s eaten throughout Asia, often with various sauces, meats, aromatics, and other toppings depending on where you come from. It’s a popular breakfast food, although it’s also commonly eaten when you’re ill, because it’s easy to make and easy to digest. The Cantonese word for this is jook, which (for reasons far too long-winded to get into now) is what my family calls it – so although the Solaires here are primarily Mandarin-speaking, they’re also going to call it jook because I say so. If you need an in-universe explanation, please feel free to (as I often do) imagine William living it up in colonial-era Hong Kong, or sitting round a glitzy casino table in Macau, and extrapolate your own details from there.
旗袍 qípáo: Also called a cheongsam – look, there’s some complicated Mandarin vs Cantonese etymology going on here, but without getting too in the weeds about it, this is the classic, stereotypical Chinese women’s dress – a long and fairly form-fitting dress with a mandarin collar, short sleeves, a slit on each side so you can walk and sit down. Most commonly, they have a long closure that goes from the middle of the neck to underneath the right arm, and that’s how you get into the dress - it’s kept shut with knots called pankou. They used to be daily wear in China, but nowadays Western-style clothes are much more common – the version the Solaires are talking about is more formal, but if you’re interested in fashion history then I suggest having a quick Google, because there’s all sorts of interesting stuff out there about the evolution of the qipao silhouette and such.
盘扣 pánkòu: Decorative Chinese knots, also called ‘frogs’, that are used to fasten clothes – if you picture a qipao/cheongsam, these are the knots that fasten the closure that goes diagonally across the chest, from the collar to the side seam. They come in all sorts of shapes and colours, and they function a little bit like a hook and eye closure, except the hook is a solid knot, if that helps.
走吧 zǒu ba: ‘Let’s go!’, or ‘Let’s get going!’
Also, as a note: William’s wearing braces, by which I mean the straps that attach to your waistband to keep your trousers up, not the metal things on your teeth. Fun fact: Americans, you might know these as suspenders, but in British English the term suspenders refers to what you would call garter belts, i.e. the straps that go around your thigh to keep your stockings up. It’s not the intention, but if you’d like to imagine that William’s wearing those as well, then I can’t exactly stop you, can I?

Sometimes, it is humbling and extremely frustrating realizing how much you do not know about a subject you thought you had a vague grasp on. Which is to say, TIL there are a lot of different types of Zionism, only some of which are concerned with an actual Jewish state!
If you want more info about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Hey Alma (a feminist Jewish site) has some helpful explainers that start at zero knowledge. Some that may be of particular interest are:
Media literacy and source evaluation
Intersectionality and antisemitism
Anti-Zionism and antisemitism
America's relationship to Israel
We are poorly served by news organizations regarding Israeli-Palestinian everything, but especially in the United States. So I think it is especially important for American goyim* to overcome that.
--
* As a non-Jew, I do not consider "goyim" an offensive term, merely a descriptive one. (Of course it can be used pejoratively, but most words can!)
Honestly as a person of Cantonese descent, I would consider gweilo more derogatory, in the same way "cracker" or "honky" are used to disparage white people.

The "Kwisatz Haderach" in translation
This is a long shot but if you're into dialect etymology, translation, and Dune, then read on
So I was chatting with my mates about the Chinese translation of the Kwisatz Haderach from Dune. Kwisatz Haderach, for the uninitiated, means "shortening of the way" in the conlang of the novel.
In the Villeneuve films, it's translated as "奎薩兹 · 哈德拉赫" (in traditional Chinese, at the very least).
This, like many Chinese translation for names and places, is a meaningless transliteration. It's a phonetic representation of what the name sounds like out loud, but you cannot decode this term into a coherent phrase.
It's a tall order trying to translate the meaning of Kwisatz Haderach ('shortening of the way') into Chinese though, because it's not even done in English for majority of the films (and presumably not in the book either).
But...what if we could fit the meaning of Kwisatz Haderach into the Chinese transliteration? Better yet, what if we could fit the themes and message of the character Paul Atreides into the Chinese name?
May I suggest:
規沙示 · 下地勒
Cantonese pronunciation: kwai-sa-si · ha-dei-lak
規 <kwai> as in 規矩 (rules/guidelines)
沙 <sa> as in sand
示 <si> as in 示意 (display/signify)
下 <ha> as in (to go) downwards
地 <dei> as in the ground
勒 <lak> as in strangle, but also 勒贖 (ransom/extortion)
It may still seem meaningless at first. "Guide the sand displays; go down to the ground; strangle"...? That's pretty much incoherent.
But when you read it backwards...
勒地下 · 示沙規
勒 as in strangle, but also ransom/extortion
地下 as in underground (like the Sietches)
示 as in display/signify
沙 as in sand
規 as in rules/guidelines
"strangle & hold hostage the underground; manifest the rules of sand"
And is that not essentially what Paul has done in his consolidation of power among the Fremen and ascension to the Emperor's throne?
This transliteration works specifically in Cantonese and a few non standard Chinese dialects. In Mandarin Chinese 下 would not be pronounced as 'Ha'. Their loss though.
