1. carpool
you had first overheard hotch complaining about his car troubles to rossi.
everyone drove the same bureau issued suv. it was odd for one to have an issue and not the others. emily laughed and joked to the group about it being ‘old man troubles’ to which he rolled his eyes.
“it’s going into the shop after work. standard maintenance.”
you finally butted in when hotch debated what rental car to get.
“i can just pick you up tomorrow if you’d like. i drive in your direction anyway,” you offered. “save you the trouble.”
hotch raised an eyebrow. “are you sure? i have to get jack to school too.”
you waved your hand. “i’ll pick you both up at eight.”
true to your word, you pulled up to hotch’s apartment complex a few minutes early and shot him a quick text to let him know you were outside.
jack came barreling out first, hotch not far behind. his backpack bounced as he ran and lunchbox hit against his leg.
“hi y/n!” jack exclaimed as he climbed into the car. hotch greeted you with a quieter hello as he buckled jack’s seatbelt and circled the car to get in the passenger's seat.
you stayed quiet while driving, focusing instead on navigating. hotch had asked jack about his day ahead in an effort to make small talk. the young boy perked up and began rambling off about everything he would be doing at school. you were impressed with how much he seemed to enjoy learning.
it was only a few minutes before you were pulling up to jack’s school as per aaron’s directions. you quickly parked while aaron got out of his seat to help jack out of the car and get his backpack on.
before he exited though, you twisted around to say goodbye to jack and wish him a good day at school.
he waved up at you with a toothy smile.
“maybe you and dad could drive me to school together more often.”
you and aaron met each others eyes in a mutual agreement.
“i think that can definitely be arranged.”
2. work
it was rare that jessica couldn’t watch jack. her job and schedule allowed her to care for the young boy after school and when aaron was away on cases.
today, however, she got swamped with a last minute series of meetings and was out of town for the day. she let aaron know as soon as possible but not quick enough for him to find another sitter.
that meant one thing, jack would have to spend the day at the bau.
aaron coached his son the entire drive over on the proper behavior. it was a paperwork day, thankfully, and he made sure jack knew that everyone on the team had a lot of work to get done. that meant no bothering them.
despite the warning, jack was practically bouncing the entire way up, more than excited he would get to spend an entire day with some of his favorite people on the planet.
members of the team greeted jack as he made his way around the bullpen. morgan even slipped him a lollipop he stole from garcia for the occasion. when hotch had begun to guide his son up towards the office, you offered to let jack sit with you.
hotch tilted his head. “are you sure?”
“i don’t have a ton of files to get done. he won’t be a bother.”
hotch brought a spare chair over to your desk. he thanked you again and disappeared into his office. you knew the young boy would need entertainment of some kind while he waited.
you took a spare piece of paper from your desk and a few pens. jack took them eagerly with a thank you and got to coloring right away.
it was far from a distraction. his scratching on paper served as white noise more than anything.
he seemed to finish after a few minutes, sliding it over to you for approval. you beamed when you saw the drawing. it was you, him, and hotch at what looked like the park. some of the scribbles were a little tough to decipher but you got the gist.
“wow jack!” you exclaimed. “i think we might have found your hidden talent!”
jack giggled, taking the picture back.
“wanna go show your dad?”
the boy was sliding off the chair and running up the steps towards his dad's office before you could stop him. while the offer was made, you were unsure if hotch was in a meeting. the door was already open, though, and jack headed in with ease.
“dad! dad! look what i made!” jack quickly exclaimed. hotch looked up from his file, expression softening as his son handed the picture.
you entered the office next, apologizing for jack’s sudden rogue behavior. hotch held his hand up, lips upturned in a small smile.
he kept the photo framed on his wall.
3. career day
there were plenty of events at jack’s elementary school that were spread throughout the year.
he had an art show, a holiday concert, and even a mini science fair. aaron had done his best to make it to the ones he could, but there were times when work conflicted and he felt awful.
jack had another event, career day, in just a few days and the team had yet to be called in for a case.
this was a big deal for him. once aaron had told him he would be in attendance, jack seemed to work extra hard and checked every single morning to make sure his dad would still be there. typically, jessica would also attend with or without aaron but she was away on a work trip.
as happy as jack was that aaron would be there, all of the other kids in his class were bragging about both of their parents taking the day off.
haley wasn’t around anymore and his aunt was busy.
jack asked his dad before he got out of the car for school. one of the aids had handed aaron a flier with a reminder for the event. in the back, jack piped up.
“can y/n come too?”
aaron glanced at his son through the mirror. he knew how important this event was for jack.
“sure, buddy. i can ask her today.”
jack’s career fair was that friday during your lunch break. the students would be dressing up as their future careers and even prepared a presentation for the parents who had come to see them.
despite not being able to make it, jack had enlisted jessica’s help to make his outfit a total surprise.
aaron and you had left a few minutes before your scheduled break to ensure enough time to make it to the school. you had to admit, hearing that jack wanted you at such a big event for him and being invited made you tear up.
you quickly found seats in the auditorium. jack’s teacher had given a brief speech before releasing everyone to walk around the room.
jack was in the back corner. you and aaron both beamed when you say his career choice.
he was dressed in a suit, one of aaron’s ties around his neck though it was much too long for his body. he had a little bag beside him and an id clipped to his collar. he looked like aaron.
jack immediately ran into his dads legs, squeezing him tightly. you were next.
“hey buddy,” you greeted. “what did you dress up as?”
“i’m an fbi agent!” he exclaimed proudly. “i wanted to be like you and dad.”
you glanced at aaron who pressed his lips together. “you wanted to be like us?”
“yeah! i couldn’t be a superhero so i chose the real thing.”
both you and aaron collected jack in your arms at his words.
aaron stayed close to you and jack went through his entire presentation: what an fbi agent was, why he picked it, and how he can practice in his everyday life. it was adorable.
it was finally time for the career fair to end and jack had hugged you both again before running off with his class. you and aaron needed to get back to work too. aaron drove you two back to the bureau, leaving the radio on at a comfortable volume.
“thank you for coming with me. i know it meant a lot to jack.”
aaron was truly grateful. jack adored you and deep down, aaron always worried that his son would struggle with emotions and opening up after losing haley. but with you, he was the opposite.
you leaned over the center console to squeeze his hand. a small intimate gesture.
“of course. anything for either of you.”
4. emergency room
you loved watching over jack whenever you could.
all of the team, minus you and morgan, had a conference out in wisconsin over the weekend. it wasn’t odd for certain members to not go, the bureau chose who they thought would discuss the content the best.
you volunteered to watch jack in aaron’s absence.
you headed over to the hotchner residence immediately after work on friday. the rest of the team would be heading out that night for the conference on saturday and sunday.
jack was ecstatic that you were watching him. he even made a list of movies he wanted to watch and games he wanted to play.
of course you had been in aaron’s apartment before, but he still showed you around and pointed out where specific things for jack were. he stopped by his bedroom, motioning you to drop your bags.
“you can sleep in here. i changed the sheets and all before you came but there’s also fresh linens in the hall closet.”
he had said it so casually you couldn’t help the blush that formed. you really hoped he didn’t notice.
you had to practically shove aaron out the door after the makeshift tour. he was running late for the airport but you could sense his nervousness about leaving jack. he finally kissed his son on the forehead and squeezed your shoulder.
“good luck at your conference.” you giggled when he rolled his eyes, clearly not excited for it. “try and have some fun.”
“i doubt it.”
the weekend with jack went by smoothly. you did everything on his agenda and spent some time in the city too. it was honestly relaxing to be with the boy.
aaron had texted you before he had left wisconsin, sending the flight information and arrival time. you had responded with a simple ‘safe flight!’ and ventured into the kitchen to make jack dinner.
jack was bouncing around as you cooked. he missed his dad and was excited for him to get home. you warned him gently to be careful and he simply giggled before taking off around the apartment.
you thought all was good until you heard a loud crash and an instant cry.
after shutting the burner of the stove off, you wasted no time in running to find jack.
he was sitting on the floor on the hallway, the table knocked over and a picture frame scattered on the floor. your heart plummeted when you saw the blood on his forehead and hands.
you’ve had training for this. you’ve literally saved people's lives but seeing jack injured seemed to make you falter.
you quickly took him in his arms and brought him into the kitchen, grabbing a towel to his cut. you needed to slow the bleeding before anything. you used your spare hand to wipe away jack’s tears.
“it’s gonna be okay, jackers. i promise.”
his verbal crying had subsided but the tears still flowed. your heart ached.
after a few moments, you removed the cloth and winced. he would definitely need stitches. “i’m gonna take you to get cleaned up, okay?” jack nodded.
you scooped him into your arms, quickly grabbing your phone and keys.
the drive to urgent care went by thankfully quickly. jack kept the cloth pressed to the cut and was taking it like a champ. you knew he would be okay but anxiety still nipped at your head.
doctors took jack back right away. you relayed what happened and that you were his babysitter. thankfully with aaron’s status at the bau, not much information was needed for you to write down.
when you went to follow them back to jack’s room, you were stopped. it was standard protocol for them to not let friends or family back while they operated. as much as you wanted to go and be with him, it simply wasn’t allowed.
you squeezed jack’s hand quickly, reassuring him that he would be okay. your eyes stayed on him until he was led out of sight.
you needed to call aaron.
the team was mingling about on the jet, all immersed in a game of poker while rossi slept somewhere else on the jet. hotch’s phone rang and he placed his cards down to pick it up.
hotch barely had time to answer with a hello before you were apologizing.
“aaron i’m so so sorry,” you cried.
“y/n what happened? where are you?”
“i’m at urgent care,” aaron’s heart fell at your words. “jack fell and cut his head. aaron i’m so sorry.”
you were crying again when you finished talking. he could tell you were trying to muffle your sobs with your hand.
“y/n,” aaron needed to calm you down before anything. “is jack okay?”
“yeah yeah. they took him back to get stitches but they said he was going to be okay. i’m sorry i was supposed to be taking care of him.”
“it’s okay. as long as jack is being taken care of, that's all that matters. i’m sure it was an accident.”
you’re already protesting his words. “but i-”
“y/n,” aaron’s voice is stern. “it’s okay. i’ll meet you at urgent care when we land. shouldn’t be more than thirty minutes.”
he was going easy on you and you knew it.
the thirty minute wait seemed to go by agonizingly slow. a doctor had come into the waiting room and let you know that they were beginning the stitching. the cleaning had taken longer than intended.
you shut your eyes when someone sat down next to you. you knew it was him. you knew you should turn and talk to aaron but the guilt was all consuming.
he finally took the first words. “how’s jack?”
“he’s good. getting his stitches now. aaron i’m-”
“y/n, it’s okay, really. please don’t apologize again. accidents happen,” his words were gentle. you stayed quiet, knowing you would apologize again if you opened your mouth.
aaron’s hand moved to your knee, effectively stopping the anxious bouncing and squeezing to reassure you of his words.
he kept his hand there until a doctor came out to which he stood up, professionalism seeping into his expression.
“you can go first,” you offered once the doctor had informed you that jack was ready to be seen. it felt dumb to have to vocally tell him to go.
aaron was having none of that. he reached down to take your hand in yours and hoist you to your feet, pulling you after him to jack’s room. aaron entered first, hugging his son tightly.
“hi jackers,” you greeted quietly after stepping into the room.
the young boy bit his lip as tears welled in his eyes. “i’m so sorry.”
aaron looked at his son. “what for buddy?”
“i was running when i wasn’t supposed to and i got hurt.”
you took a seat on the bed beside him, carefully wrapping an arm around his shoulder. he leaned into you as aaron occupied the other space beside him.
“it’s alright. i’m just glad you’re okay.”
5. hurts
there was always a risk when a friend, a lover, anyone close to you was in a potentially dangerous line of work.
you and aaron had gone through it a few times with him and foyet and various members of the team. you, however, hadn’t ever been directly put in danger.
that was until this case.
the unsub was profiled as a misogynistic, psychopathic serial killer whose signature involved overkill of women. every female in the immediate area was absolutely terrified.
you didn’t think much of it at first, especially not when you, spencer, and emily had been sent to a suspect's house. the fear only set in when all traits of the suspect had pointed to him being the unsub and you were the one who got attacked first.
hotch nearly lost it when he found you unconscious and bloody. your face had been beaten, nose swollen and lip split. he dropped down beside you, taking your head in his hands and yelling your name in pure fear of losing you until j.j. had gotten the emt’s.
you thankfully didn’t stay in the hospital very long, just overnight. all of your wounds had gotten cleaned and stitched up but the doctor had diagnosed you with a pretty nasty concussion. you were just glad it was a local case so you didn’t have to wait to fly home.
hotch had insisted that he watched over you for at least the first night. there had been other volunteers but no one was going to argue with their boss.
you had strict concussion protocol for the first night. you would need to stay up as late as you possibly could and once you fell asleep, someone would need to wake you up every few hours. it sounded exhausting.
if hotch had any issues with it, he didn’t voice them.
you were still pretty out of it on the drive home. aaron had loaded your bags in his car and kept a secure arm around your waist to help you in the passenger's seat. he even made sure to take the least bumpy route to his apartment.
you stayed leaning against the wall of his apartment hallway as aaron knocked before unlocking the door. jessica was greeting him right away, echoing that jack was in the kitchen eating dinner. the rest of their conversation was fuzzy. your head was pounding and it felt like too much to try and tune in and listen.
“y/n?” aaron’s voice was suddenly close.
you hum as you opened your eyes slowly.
“let’s head in,” his hand fell to your shoulder as he led you inside. jessica must have left because you could only hear jack in the kitchen.
you collapsed on the couch. aaron went into the kitchen to greet his son and get you some medicine.
despite doctor’s orders, sleep was beginning to feel like a good idea. but as your eyes started to slip shut, you heard a patter against the floorboards.
“y/n?” jack’s voice was small. you knew he had never seen you like this. “are you okay?”
you sat up, patting the spot next to you for jack to climb up. “i’m alright, jackers. just got a little hurt.”
an idea seemed to pass over jack’s face and he lit up. “oh! i know how to help!”
you tilted your head to the side. sure jack was smart for his age but you didn’t know how he could help your injuries.
“how?”
jack smiled. “kisses! dad and aunt jess always say that kissing my hurts will make them feel better.”
you bit your lip. the young boy's heart made you tear up. “well i certainly want to feel better.”
jack clambered forward, placing a soft kiss to the cut on your forehead, the bruise on your cheek, and the brace on your wrist.
aaron opened his mouth, a warning for his son to be careful on the tip of his tongue. but when he saw you smile, he stopped.
“dad!” jack twisted around to face his father. “your turn!”
aaron shook his head. “sorry buddy, i think you got them all.”
jack shook his head, pointing towards your very split lip. “nuh uh. i made sure to leave one for you.”
oh.
aaron ruffled his son's hair. he wanted to defuse the brewing situation. as willing as he would be to kiss your injury, it was wrong, unprofessional. “her lip needs to heal. i can’t kiss it.”
“but y/n won’t feel better!” jack sounded clearly in distress. “please?”
both you and aaron knew jack’s stubbornness, something he got from his father.
“alright,” aaron’s voice was softer now.
he circled the couch to stand in front of you. jack babbled on about how he also had special spiderman bandaids in his room and he would even let you have one. aaron’s eyes met yours. it was a silent agreement between the two of you.
aaron ducked down to kiss the corner of your mouth, lips ghosting over the stitches.
it was a surge of emotion but one that you knew he was only doing for jack. his lips left yours much faster than you would’ve liked.
“do you feel better?”
jack’s question broke you out of the trance you were in.
aaron had kissed you. indirectly, yes, but it was still a kiss.
“without a doubt.”
+1 movie night
you and aaron hadn’t discussed the night after the case. though in all honesty, you hadn’t stopped thinking about it.
once you were cleared again for the field, cases seemed to pick up which left less than sufficient personal time for you and aaron. you missed him.
you were the first one in the office friday morning. you had gotten there early to get a headstart on your paperwork in hopes that it meant not having to stay late.
aaron was in next. he usually gave you, or whoever else was in the bullpen, a nod and a quiet ‘good morning.’ today, he changed his route and circled around to your desk.
“are you busy tonight?”
you nearly sputtered out the coffee you were drinking out of pure unawareness of where this question was going to lead.
you shook your head. “assuming we don’t have a case, i’m not.”
“good,” aaron started. “jack wanted to have a movie night and he’s been dying to see you and i wanted to see if you wanted to come over?”
his voice seemed to go up an octave towards the end, as if to cushion the non-existent blow of the question.
you beam. “i would love to.”
aaron’s eyes lift. it’s not a smile, those are rare even for you, but it’s close to it.
“perfect. does seven work?”
you nod.
“great, we’ll see you then.”
you hide your smile in the file you’re working on.
right as aaron had instructed, you showed up at aaron’s apartment right around seven. you knocked twice, stepping back to wait for the door to open. when it did, you weren’t met with your tall solemn boss, but the smaller hotchner.
“y/n!” jack exclaimed, surging forward to hug your waist.
you giggled, hugging him back. “hi jack.”
aaron appeared behind his son, lips upturned at the sight of you two. “hi,” you greeted him.
“come on in, it’s all set up.”
you let aaron take your bag. usually on nights like these, you and aaron stayed up much later than you expected and you crashed at his place instead of going home.
you took a seat at the edge of the couch, letting aaron decide the distance between you two. when he returned, he sat a few feet away. it wasn’t enough to be inferred as him clearly trying to make distance but it wasn’t close enough either.
jack had clambered into his dad’s lap, curling into his chest with just enough vision to still see the movie.
once he had settled, however, his head turned to where you still sat. he extended one of his hands, opening and closing his fists in a grabbing motion. he wanted you closer.
“i wanna lay with you too.”
“of course jackers.”
you smiled and scooted a little closer to aaron. you looked up at him cautiously. being close to jack meant being close to him too. aaron didn’t respond verbally. he lifted his arm from where it sat at his side to rest along the back of the couch. open invitation.
you curled into aaron’s side, legs pressing against his. jack wasted no time in readjusting himself to be strung across the both of you. you could feel aaron’s eyes peer down on you but you didn’t meet his gaze. instead, you settled further into the couch and watched the screen.
as the final few scenes of the movie played, jack began yawning and rubbing his eyes. you knew it was his bedtime but would fight until the movie was over. you brought your hand to his back, running your fingers up and down to help soothe his tired state.
when the end credit popped up, aaron leaned to shut off the tv. “alright buddy, let’s get you to bed. can you say goodnight to y/n?”
jack slid fully into your lap, arms interlocking around your neck to hug you.
“goodnight y/n. thank you for coming over.”
“goodnight jack,” you spoke, squeezing him a little tighter.
when you let go, the boy wasted no time in all but sprinting down the hall to pick out the bedtime story aaron would read.
“i’m going to get him ready for bed,” aaron started. “i shouldn’t be too long.”
you smiled up at him. “take your time.”
aaron too disappeared down the hall and you were left to your own devices.
you knew he wanted you to wait in the living room but your overnight bag was discarded in his room and you really wanted to wash your face and get in more comfy clothing.
you tried to be as quiet as possible as you walked down the hallway, fully intent on going into aaron’s room just to grab your bag. that was until you heard the conversation between aaron and jack. you stayed pressed against the wall next to the door.
guilt climbed in your chest at what you were doing but what the hotchner boys didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them.
“-don’t get it.” that was jack.
you could almost see aaron’s eyebrow quirk. “what don’t you get, buddy?”
“why aren’t you and y/n dating yet?”
you suck in a breath, cheeks turning rosy at the question. you absolutely knew you weren’t meant to hear it. the thought of turning away and completing your original task passes over but you want, need, to hear aaron’s response.
“i don’t think she likes me like that, bud.”
“she does,” jack nearly giggles. “she talks about you a lot.”
you just got betrayed by a seven year old.
aaron seems to change the conversation after that and that’s when you tune out, replaying aaron’s words over and over. i don’t think she likes me like that. does that mean he liked you too?
you’re so caught up in your thoughts that you don’t notice jack’s door open and aaron step out.
he sighed, not surprised in the slightest at seeing you waiting. “i know you heard all that.”
busted.
you stammer, trying poorly to come up with an excuse.
“come on,” aaron’s hand is strong as he guides you to his room. “he just got to bed, don’t want him waking up while we talk.”
fear courses through you. you could lose your job over all this. dramatic reaction but still a possibility. above all, however, you could lose aaron personally. it was already a barrier you felt like you were pushing
“jack sometimes doesn’t think before he asks a question,” aaron starts. oh. “i’m sorry you had to hear that.
he was sorry?
“why are you sorry?” you’re trying to save yourself the potential heartbreak.
aaron sighs.
“i’m your boss. it’s unprofessional to have feelings for my subordinate. you watch my son too, i don’t want you feeling like i’ve been taking advantage of you.”
you wanted to laugh. aaron was always overly professional with his words.
“i really like you aaron.”
he didn’t respond at first and for a moment you think your confession was a little too strong. but then his eyes meet yours and he smiles.
“can i kiss you? properly this time.”
you hummed. “please.”
aaron’s lips met yours tentatively. his hands cupped your cheeks effectively holding you to him. it was new, though not unwelcome.
you leaned up to loop your arms around his neck to pull him closer.
aaron pulled away first and you whined, clearly upset at the sudden lack of contact. you had waited ages to kiss aaron and in no way did you expect for it to end so soon.
“relax baby,” aaron chuckled. your heart leaped at the pet name. “need to adjust.”
he sat down on the bed. arms snaked around your waist to pull you close to him.
“so you like me too?” the question slips out before you can think about it.
aaron leans up to kiss the corner of your mouth, the same spot where your cut had turned into a scar.
“i do.”

Moonlight Beta: Chapter 4 - Orphaned
Series Masterlist
Chapter 3, Chapter 5
Pairing: Scott McCall x Fem!Liam Dunbar
Please comment, like and share
The police had showed up to arrest Violet after she tired to kill Scott and Brett.
Lia opened the double doors to walk inside toward the boys' locker room, and she walked past Coach and the team.
"Guys, back off," Coach told them, "You can get your gear tomorrow. If anyone sees Garrett, you notify the police immediately. Then tell him he's off the damn team."
Lia walked down the hall, and paused when she saw Scott talking to a man alone. "Dad, really," Scott told him, "I'm okay."
"I should've been here," his Dad said, "And I said I would be at the games." Scott shrugged lightly, "Well, I mean this was just a pre-season scrimmage. I didn't even tell you about it."
"But I promised your Mom I'd be around so she could pick up some double shifts at the hospital," he said, "I should've been here."
"You're here now," Scott said with a small nod. He saw Lia over his father shoulder, and his father looked to where he was looking at. Lia tensed and gave a small nervous smile, "Hey. Sorry, I--"
"It's fine," Scott said as he shook his head. Lia pushed herself from the wall and walked closer as she looked at Scott's father, "Hey. Lia."
Scott's father held out his hand, and she shook it as he smiled at her, "Raphael McCall. Nice to meet you."
Jordan brought Violet out into the hall, having her handcuffed. Lia, Raphael and Scott watched.
Violet looked at Jordan's name tag, "Jordan Parrish?"
"Deputy Parrish," Jordan told her.
Violet looked at Lia and Scott, smirking as she past and Jordan led her out, leaving. Sheriff stood next to Lia, Scott and Raphael, and the man looked down at Sheriff's hand, "Sheriff, what is that? Is that the weapon?"
"Yeah," Sheriff answered. "It's a thermo-cut wire."
Raphael looked up in recognition, and he turned around, following Violet and Jordan with the Sheriff, "Parrish, hold up."
Scott looked at Lia, "Where's Kira?"
"She took off," she answered. "Stiles told her about Lydia cracking the second part of the Dead Pool." Scott looked up, "Her Mom's on it."
"Everyone's on it," Lia said. "You're not," he said. Lia shook her head, "Not yet. There's still another third, right?" Scott tilted his head to the side and started to listen on Raphael and Sheriff talking to Violet.
Lia stared at him with a small frown, "Are you listening in?" Scott glanced at her and nodded. "How can I?" she asked softly. "Focus your breathing," he said softly after a moment and took her hands in his, "Just focus on one side, all you have to do is concentrate."
Lia released a breath and stared at him for a moment as she listened in.
"Thermo-cut wires, a very unusual weapon, Violet."
"Can you hear them too?" Scott asked, and she nodded.
"Now, we've got a file in the Bureau on something similar. Used in over a dozen murders."
"I don't know what you're talking about. I just go to school here."
"Maybe we should call your parents, then. Oh, no... That's right. You don't have any parents. That's why they call you the Orphans."
Lia glanced over and looked with Scott to see Jordan taking Violet away while she glared at Scott's Dad. Raphael looked at Sheriff, "We need to find her boyfriend, Garrett."
Sheriff nodded and Raphael walked away.
Sheriff turned around, "Coach, I'm gonna need both their locker numbers. And somebody find me a pair of bolt cutters."
Lia and Scott exchanged a look, and they let go of each other's hands. Scott nodded and they walked to the boys' locker room. "Stay here, be on the look out," Scott said quietly and walked into the locker room.
Scott opened Garrett's locker door, and knelt down. "I think someone's coming," Lia said quietly and looked at him, "Hurry." Scott unzipped a red bag, opening it before he froze. Lia glanced outside and then quickly at Scott, "You find anything?"
Inside the bag, it was full of money, all in bands, all $100 bills.
Scott hesitated and looked at her, "No," he answered and closed the bag. He grabbed the bag and closed the door. "Let's go," he said quietly as he walked out, grabbing Lia's hand and dragging her out of the hall before anyone could see them.
--------
The next day, Mason and Lia were on a jog in the preserve, something Mason deemed 'healthy' for Lia to do considering how weird she was being lately. To distract her from whatever was going on in her mind, Mason started to rant about how they found out their friends Violet and Garrett were really murderers.
"It's not just that we were friends with them, Li, they were using us for their cover," Mason said, "I mean, professional killers were using us. How are you not freaking out about that?"
"Trust me, Mason, I'm freaking the hell out," Lia said. It was true, Mason had no idea how worse the situation was. They were trying to kill supernatural creatures like Lia to get money from the Deadpool hit-list.
Lia didn't realize she was now running faster to the point where Mason couldn't catch up. "Lia, slow down!" Mason's words didn't register in her head until she was far enough away that Mason was nowhere to be seen.
"Crap," she muttered to herself after stopping and turning. A truck rammed into Lia from behind, making her fall and roll over the ground.
Lia groaned in pain and lifted her head. Garrett got out of the truck, walking closer with his dagger in hand, "Hey, Lia." Lia was healing from her injuries of being run over, unable to move with broken bones. "Sorry about missing movie night. Don't worry. I got something else planned." Garrett stabbed her with the knife.
--------
Since Mason came back from the jog and couldn't find Lia by himself, he went to the only other person Lia started to hung out with beside Mason;
Scott McCall.
Mason didn't know how Scott, a junior, knew his best friend who's a freshman, but the teenager knew that Scott and Stiles helped Lia deal with what happened with her old team coming to face them, so he didn't question it. Not now. Not when they needed to find Lia.
So, the moment Mason told the Alpha that Lia just disappeared during their jog, both of them started searching for her together around school until they went to Coach's office to see if he had saw her before her disappearance.
"Sorry guys, Lia skipped my class," Coach replied, "Maybe she's sick, like me."
Mason and Scott walked down the hall as Mason frowned and looked at the Alpha, "Lia didn't look sick on our run."
Scott looked at his phone to see if she had texted him back, but nothing. "She's not getting back to any of my texts."
"Mine either," Mason said. The bell rang, interrupting their conversation. Scott looked at him, "Yeah, don't worry. I'll find her. Text me if you see her?" Mason nodded, and he walked off to his next class and left Scott.
Scott was soon the only one in the hallway. As he was about to make his way out of the hallway to find help in search for Lia, his phone started ringing. The teen alpha sighed in relief when Lia's phone number popped up, and he quickly answered his phone.
"Lia, he--" the alpha was cut off by a male voice that he soon recognized.
"Try again, Scotty," It was Garrett.
Scott couldn't help but let out a low growl at the thought of the boy hurting his beta, "Where is she?"
"Come on, like I'm actually gonna tell you that?"
"I'll give you the money," Scott said.
"Yeah, you will. But that's not gonna get you Lia back. You're gonna have to put in a little more effort than that."
"What do you want?"
"I want the money and Violet, or you never see Lia again."
Garrett hung up, and Scott glared at his phone. He got a text from Lia's phone. He clenched his jaw as he opened it.
Meet me at the bus pit.
Scott looked around the empty hall with a glare and walked out. He walked to the bus pit and looked around before using his hearing to find Garrett.
Garrett was waiting between two buses with his lacrosse stick/dagger. Scott walked closer, stopping at the front of the buses, looking around, walking toward him.
"Okay, what do you want?" Scott asked, "You want me to go to Stilinski? I can do that. Or I can talk to my father. He's an FBI agent."
Garrett scoffed, "You think I want you talking to anyone with a badge? I'm not getting help from a werewolf because I want him to talk to someone."
Scott glared at him, "Then what am I supposed to do?"
"They are transferring Violet to a federal facility," Garrett said, "You are not gonna let that happen."
"How?"
"They're going to put her in a car," Garrett said, "We're going to follow it. We get ahead of it. You stop it."
"You want me to attack a car?" Scott asked, "That's your plan?" Garrett glared back at him, "You're an Alpha. If you can't stop one little car, then one little Beta is going to die." He held up his lacrosse stick/knife, "I stabbed your girlfriend with a blade dipped in wolfsbane. Once it gets to the heart… Bad things happen." Scott glared at him, trying to keep his anger in.
--------
Lia was in a well, a fucking well. She had been stabbed with something laced with wolfsbane. Even though she knew little about it, she knew that at some point she would probably die if nobody would find her.
"Help!" the teen shouted, "Scott! Is anybody there!" With no answer, the girl got even more impatient and freaked out. "Somebody help me, please! Somebody help me! Help, Scott! Scott!"
After a while, she tried to climb out of the well but fell back down and into the water. She was starting to lose any and all hope until she remembered a conversation she had with Scott that first night at the lake house.
It was not too long after the full moon and Lia finally gaining control that Scott showed her the window she broke while turning.
"You did that. You went right through it."
The freshman was surprised at the damage, "I jumped through a window? As in an actual window?" Scott smiled slightly at her confusion as she looked to find any injuries on herself.
"The cuts healed while you were changed," Scott spoke up, stopping the girl from checking herself over. "I guess that's one good thing," she mused, too ashamed to make eye contact with Scott.
"For you," Scott said, "For someone else, it could be really bad. We need to figure out how you can get a grip on this."
Lia frowned, remembering all the conversations she's had in the past over her lack of control when it came to her anger.
"I've been trying to do that for years, it hasn't improved much" she explained. "What does your Dad say?" he asked.
"He says when kids get angry they deal with it in one of two ways. They either hurt themselves or they hurt someone else".
It took a lot of effort and strength, but the girl finally started climbing up the well again. The girl was doing good until the wolfsbane effect started to hit her as she got closer and closer to the top. She was so close, so she howled instinctively. Luckily for her, Scott heard this and raced to the well.
Lia kept going, pushing herself further and further. Right before she got to the top, her foot started to slip as well as her hand.
But before her other hand could lose its grip, someone's hand grabbed onto her arm and pulled her out of the well.
It was Scott McCall, her alpha.
Scott pulled her out of the well and a bit a ways from it before sitting her down, "You're okay, I got you."
The girl was shaking and rightfully so. After all, she would've died if it wasn't for Scott's incredible timing.
Scott pulled her into a tight and protective embrace, sighing in relief that she was okay. Lia hung onto him tightly in fear of it all being a dream, that she was still stuck in the well. They held onto each other for that moment. They were okay, everything was okay.
"Scott... I don't feel so good," Lia admitted as they pulled away. Scott looked down at the cut on her t-shirt, and saw the deep knife wound on her chest.
"You'll be okay," he said and picked her up into his arms. He carried her away in bride style and she rested her head on his shoulder before slowly closing her eyes.
Scott brought Lia to the animal clinic where his boss, Deaton, was healing Lia. Chris Argent was also there, he had been helping Scott try and track Lia beforehand and was there to keep him company and make sure everyone was safe. They might've started on a rough-note when Allison was still alive, but it seemed as if her death brought them closer together. Chris saw Scott as a son in a way, he wanted to be there for him.
Lia groaned as Deaton cut into her chest with a professional doctor-blade. The yellow wolfsbane that she had been stabbed with came out at that moment.
Scott put his hand on her forehead in a comforting manner for his Beta. "I don't want to keep watching people die," Scott admitted quietly. "I'm not sure you have much choice about that," Chris said.
"Maybe I do," Scott said. He looked back down at Lia for a split second. Lia almost lost her life that day because of a teen couple who wanted money and were willing to kill to get it. An innocent freshman girl almost died, his first and only turned Beta.
"That's a lot of burden to carry, Scott," Deaton advised his employee carefully.
"I don't care," Scott said, "No one else dies. Everyone on that list, everyone on that Deadpool. It doesn't matter if they're wendigos, or werewolves, or whatever. I'm gonna save everyone."

Report from Corrington Gill, Director, to Harold D. Smith, Chairman, Committee for Congested Production Areas, Summarizing the Committee Staff Activities and Resolution of Shortages Found in the Investigation
Record Group 212: Records of the Committee for Congested Production Areas Series: Letters to the Chairman File Unit: Letter to the Chairman - Nov. 5, 1943
This document reports on wartime shortages in milk, ice, coal, etc. around the country.
EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT Committee for Congested Production Areas Washington 25, D.C. November 5, 1943 Dear Mr. Chairman: For your information I am presenting below a brief sketch of the activities of the staff of this Committee, including the status of these activities in designated congested areas. [underline] TYPICAL ACTIVITES RELATING TO SHORTAGES Reports received of shortage of rice, grits, and corn meal, the staple foods in Charleston, South Carolina. We presented facts to the Food Distribution Administration and they acted, resulting in flow of these commodities to Charleston and alleviated of this problem. This stop-gap on rice supply was implemented yesterday by issuance of Food Distribution Administration amendment at request of this office permitting one hundred percent flow of rice supply during November to civilian population, compared with previous fifty-five percent. On basis of report of milk shortage in Brunswick, Georgia, CCPA called meeting of OPA and FDA resulted in resumption of adequate milk supply. War workers in the Hampton Roads Area were without coal. Negotiations with Solid Fuels Administration resulted in directive ordering coal to area. Later, additional coal was needed at Newport News. Ordinary sources failed. War Department acceded to Committee request and supplied coal in the emergency. A serious difficulty arose in many areas because out-of date population data do not permit accurate determination of need of the Budget and the Bureau of the Census to obtain up-to-date population data for ten congested areas, taking into consideration for allocation of foods, fuel, housing, transportation, and other community services facilities. 6-217-PL of 7-NOBU-COS-WP [full transcription at link]

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) revealed Tuesday that FBI agents have seized his cellphone amid a probe into “mistakes” he claims to have made in reporting his campaign finances — including a $320,000 loan of his own money.
The first-term GOP lawmaker posted on X that the FBI “took possession” of his phone last Friday to investigate what he said were likely “mistakes” in his campaign’s “initial financial filings.”
“We have worked diligently with attorneys and reporting experts to correct the errors and ensure compliance going forward,” Ogles said, adding that he would “fully cooperate” with the bureau “as I have with the Federal Election Commission.”
“I am confident all involved will conclude that the reporting discrepancies were based on honest mistakes, and nothing more,” he added.
The Tennessee Republican is at least the third House member in the 118th Congress whose campaign finances have apparently warranted a closer look by federal authorities.
Ogles reported a $320,000 loan to his own campaign in April 2022, according to federal campaign finance filings, but amended that the following year to show a mere $20,000 loan.
House financial disclosure forms reveal he held as much as $1.1 million in assets in 2022 — but potentially $1 million in liabilities for a home mortgage in 2022 and line of credit stretching back to January 2020.
“I’m not a wealthy man who can self-fund the millions of dollars needed to run a congressional campaign,” Ogles told The Tennessean in May. “I am a grassroots representative, and I pledged everything I own to run for the honor of representing Tennessee’s Fifth Congressional District.”
“While we ultimately needed to transfer $20,000, unfortunately, the full amount of my pledge was mistakenly included on my campaign’s FEC reports,” he claimed.
Neither Ogles’ attorney, G. Kline Preston IV, nor the FBI immediately responded to a request for comment.
NewsChannel 5 in Nashville first reported on Tuesday that the FBI executed a search warrant on the congressman’s phone.
It comes after a series of similar scandals in the House.
Rep. George Santos (R-NY) faced a federal investigation just one month after his election to the House in November 2022 — and was later indicted and expelled from office.
The now-former representative from New York’s 3rd Congressional District was federally indicted on 23 counts for allegedly having laundered campaign money and defrauded donors.
Santos has pleaded not guilty and is slated for trial next month.
“Squad” Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) also acknowledged that federal prosecutors were investigating her use of campaign funds after reports surfaced about payments flowing to a security guard whom she later married.
On Tuesday, Bush was defeated in Missouri’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary race by St. Louis County prosecutor Wesley Bell.
A member of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, Ogles had just defeated Nashville Metro council member Courtney Johnston in Tennessee’s Fifth Congressional District the day before the FBI came knocking at his door.
The Campaign Legal Center first filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics in January over the congressman’s financial records, comparing his campaign ledger with that of Santos.

National Review comments on free speech & vagueness in Scotland
After the implementation of Scotland’s new hate-crime law, which criminalizes conduct and language perceived to be insulting to protected identity groups, J. K. Rowling challenged the Scottish police to arrest her. On April Fools’ Day, when the law went into effect, Rowling posted a series of tweets describing various trans-identifying men as men and accusing Scottish lawmakers of placing a “higher value on the feelings of men performing their idea of females” than on “the rights and freedoms of actual women and girls.” Many complaints were then filed against Rowling, but the police declined to prosecute, stating that her comments were “not assessed to be criminal.” Really? The law appears to make any comment perceived as offensive to those who identify as transgender a potential crime punishable by up to seven years’ imprisonment. The trans activists who reported Rowling were certainly under that impression, as are any citizens still fearful of expressing themselves freely. The law relies on subjective and arbitrary judgments. No specific victim is required. Third-party reporting is encouraged. The law prohibits “stirring up hatred” against some characteristics (transgenderism) while neglecting others (sex). “I trust that all women—irrespective of profile or financial means — will be treated equally under the law,” Rowling wrote, pointedly. We won’t hold our breath.

An elderly concentration camp survivor faces 11 years in prison for allegedly obstructing access to an abortion clinic. This week, a court convicted Eva Edl, 89, and three others — Eva Zastrow, 25, James Zastrow, 27, and Paul Place, 26 — for misdemeanor violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Law. FACE prohibits interfering with a woman seeking to get an abortion at a clinic. Authorities charged the defendants after they sang hymns and prayed at the Carafem Health Center in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, on March 5, 2021. The Biden Department of Justice described their actions as an illegal “blockade.”*** https://thenationalpulse.com/2024/04/04/89-year-old-concentration-camp-survivor-faces-11-years-in-jail-for-praying-at-abortion-clinic

Figures don't lie, but liars figure
***A combination of forces are at play, particularly in the manner of reporting crimes, and this is leading to deeply misleading reports. In more than one way we are seeing a lax approach to enforcement of the laws in this country, and yet the press is touting how we are experiencing a significant drop in the crime rate. This is being done to burnish the character of President Biden and shield him from responsibility in the realities witnessed by citizens. In one outlet they did manage to couch this good news with a curious detail included. The Guardian dared to say that approaching this data should be done cautiously, as it is relying on “incomplete” data. What is this all about then? The primary issue here is a new crime reporting system implemented by the FBI, used to compile its annual crime statistics. In 2021 the FBI instituted a new state of the art reporting system; great for the Bureau, but as we will see it became horrible for accuracy. The main issue is the Feds would rely only on data submitted into this new system, yet many local law enforcement agencies were incapable, for a number of reasons, of implementing this new reporting method. As a result, the FBI had to rely upon incomplete data to put out its annual statistical reports. The Marshall Project analyzed the submission process and found that thousands of LEO crime reports were not filed with the FBI, many from the largest metropolitan areas, including New York City. What this leads to are the claims that in 2023 saw a -13% drop in murders, -6% drop in all violent crimes, and -5% drops in aggravated assaults, as well as with robberies. However, this is all based on collected data from only 79% of municipal law enforcement authorities. Other cities that failed to include data included Phoenix, and Los Angeles. As the Marshall Project showed, these omissions are significant. In just one category - hate crimes - the FBI initially posted numbers showing a significant decrease. But the conclusion was made while missing reports from 40% of LEOs. The FBI was compelled to reach out to seven thousand police departments and have them submit hate crime stats into the old reporting system. Once that data came in - hate crimes were shown to have climbed by 12%.*** https://townhall.com/columnists/bradslager/2024/04/03/claims-that-crime-rates-are-plunging-by-the-media-those-are-criminally-inaccurate-n2637338

DoJ says Ashley Biden's diary is authentic.
https://thepostmillennial.com/bidens-doj-seeks-prison-time-for-woman-who-allegedly-stole-ashley-bidens-diary-sold-it-to-project-veritas
The Department of Justice has recommended prison time for 40-year-old Aimee Harris, the woman who allegedly stole a diary belonging to Ashley Biden ahead of the 2020 election. In a letter to Chief United States District Judge for the Southern District of the New York Laura Taylor Swain, the DOJ argued that a sentence of four to 10 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release would be an adequate punishment. "The defendant, as noted in the Government’s September 2023 sentencing submission, is being sentenced for 'scandalous conduct [that] is appalling and must not be overlooked,' and which, in and of itself, exhibited a clear disrespect for the law," the DOJ wrote***

follow up on fbi & social media spying
In an alarming episode highlighting the ever intrusive government surveillance in US society, Rolla Abdeljawad of Stillwater, Oklahoma, faced an unsettling encounter at her doorstep. FBI agents arrived, unannounced and unwelcome, seeking to interrogate her about her social media posts regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Abdeljawad asserted her constitutional rights, refused to engage without legal counsel and demanded the agents show their badges, which they allegedly did not do.*** What’s more disturbing is Facebook’s complicity, allegedly providing screenshots of Abdeljawad’s posts to the FBI. This raises profound concerns about privacy and the unchecked power of tech giants in collusion with government agencies. Abdeljawad’s ordeal reflects a broader pattern of surveillance disproportionately targeting certain communities, as evidenced by her posts about the ongoing conflict in Gaza and her support for Palestine. Clearly these are no longer private companies if they are acting at the behest of the government. The federal government was never supposed to have the power to engage in this kind of surveillance and restraint on speech.*** https://ampamerica.com/the-unsettling-encounter-at-an-oklahoma-doorstep-and-the-fight-for-free-speech/

Stop playing and do your job
President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice is dragging its feet in prosecuting Nicholas Roske, the man accused of trying to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, leaving legal experts perplexed about the slow-moving pace of the case. Roske was indicted for attempted murder of a Supreme Court justice nearly two years ago in June 2022, after allegedly traveling from his parent’s home in California to the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., with the intent to kill Kavanaugh. Roske, a biological male who identified in some online posts as a transgender woman, was upset over the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, according to court documents. After arriving by taxi at Kavanaugh’s house, Roske called the police on himself and was eventually found with a suitcase full of guns, ammo, zip ties, and other tools to carry out the attack. However, the case—which one legal expert who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon called a "slam dunk" for federal prosecutors—has seen almost a dozen continuances since Roske last appeared in court in October 2022, and still no plea has been reached or trial date set.*** Neither federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, nor Roske’s defense counsel, responded to requests for comment.*** https://freebeacon.com/courts/biden-doj-slow-walks-slam-dunk-case-against-man-who-allegedly-tried-to-kill-justice-kavanaugh-baffling-experts/

1st Amendment case
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys reached a favorable settlement agreement with the Vermont Agency of Education, the Vermont Principals’ Association, and a Vermont school district after the district fired a high-school snowboarding coach for respectfully expressing his view that males are biologically different than females and that those differences generally give males an advantage in sports. As part of the settlement in Bloch v. Bouchey, a case filed last July, state and school officials agreed to pay $75,000—nearly 17 times the coach’s annual salary—for terminating Coach David Bloch’s job after he expressed his views. Both the Agency of Education and school district admitted that Coach Bloch’s conversation did not violate the state-mandated Harassment, Hazing, and Bullying policy. “All Americans should be able to express their beliefs without fear of government punishment,” said ADF Legal Counsel Mathew Hoffmann. “For more than a decade, Coach Bloch led the Woodstock Union snowboarding program to enormous success in terms of both athletic accomplishment and personal growth of the snowboarders. But the school district fired him because he simply expressed his views that males and females are biologically different and questioned the appropriateness of a teenage male competing against teenage females in an athletic competition. We’re pleased to favorably settle this case on behalf of Coach Bloch, and we’ll continue our work to ensure that the First Amendment protects all viewpoints, not just those favored by the government.”*** https://adflegal.org/press-release/vt-snowboard-coach-favorably-settles-after-being-fired-stating-biological-fact

Good willful blindness/deliberate ignorance case
BOSTON (CBS DETROIT) - A Detroit-area woman was charged after she allegedly tried to get on a flight to London from Boston with 74 pounds of cannabis, which would have had a street value of $370,000, officials said. Nalexus Palmer, 28, was charged with trafficking marijuana between 50 and 100 pounds, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. On Saturday, April 30, troopers were called to Logan Airport after receiving a report that U.S. Customs and Border Protections seized 74 pounds of suspect cannabis from a passenger, who was later identified as Palmer. Authorities seized two large suitcases that had several vacuum-sealed bags of cannabis inside, and each bag had an Apple AirTag with them. Palmer flew from Detroit to Boston and was planning to fly from Boston to London, officials said. She told authorities that she didn't know the cannabis was inside the bags and that a woman, who she did not know, dropped them off to her earlier that same day. Whose harm reduction?
Addiction Activists Say They’re ‘Reducing Harm’ in Philly. Locals Say They’re Causing It.
Addicts have turned a minority neighborhood into an open-air drug market. Residents blame the mostly white advocates for ‘destroying’ their community.
By Olivia Reingold
April 8, 202
For three years, Sonja Bingham, a 55-year-old mother of three, started every day the same way: with a broom. At dawn, she would come out to sweep away the damage from the previous night—the syringes, the fentanyl baggies, the cigarette butts, and the half-eaten sandwiches. And sometimes as she swept, she couldn’t help but think that the city of Philadelphia would’ve never let this fly during the crack epidemic. “They threw our black asses in jail,” says Bingham, who’s speaking to me in her living room where there’s a TV streaming the live feed of four security cameras placed throughout her property. “Now that the color of the addicts has changed, they’re going to meet them where they are in our community and allow them to destroy it. So, now you have the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, watching how once again, our lives don’t matter.” Her problem is not just with the hundreds of drug users camped out in Kensington—her neighborhood in northeast Philly that’s been dubbed ground zero for the city’s opioid crisis. It’s with an ecosystem of activists that call themselves “harm reductionists.” ***
Earlier last month, Laurel and her Savage Sisters volunteers stormed through City Hall chanting, “What do we want? Harm reduction. When do we want it—now.” Many wore N95 masks while holding up signs with messages like “Banning harm reduction is genocide” and “Why do you want to kill my family?” They were there to push back against an effort led by council member Quetcy Lozada, who founded the Kensington Caucus, an initiative to crack down on the area’s open-air drug market. ***

Georgiduh woman
BONIFAY, Fla.- Today, Florida Highway Patrol Troopers responded to a report of an active shooter in Holmes County. The suspect was reportedly a female who had recently checked out of a local hotel and told the staff she was going on a shooting spree, directed by “God” in relation to the solar eclipse. The suspect, driving a purple Dodge Challenger with Georgia plates, entered Interstate 10 (I-10) at the 112-mile marker and traveled westbound. Within 5 miles of entering the interstate, the suspect fired multiple shots into another vehicle traveling along the interstate, striking the passing car multiple times. The driver was struck by glass fragments from the window and grazed on the arm by a bullet; however, he was able to steer his vehicle onto the shoulder of the road, away from the suspect. Continuing westbound on I-10, the suspect shot at another vehicle near the 107- mile marker, hitting the driver in the neck. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently receiving treatment. Responding Troopers located the suspect near the 96- mile marker and conducted a felony traffic stop. After the suspect was taken into custody, troopers recovered an AR-15 and a 9mm handgun within the purple Challenger. The suspect, identified as Taylon Nichelle Celestine, 22, of Georgia, was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Holmes County Jail *** https://www.flhsmv.gov/2024/04/08/florida-highway-patrol-arrest-active-shooter-suspected-of-firing-rifle-at-vehicles-on-i-10/

Place is pretty safe when your security detail sweeps it
Mayor Pete took to the airwaves of MSNBC Sunday to proclaim that Washington, D.C. is safe—super safe—and that he can walk his dog unmolested to the Capitol. He went on to say, “You couldn’t do that when we all got here!” as if to imply that somehow D.C. was safer now than it was when Biden came into a office, a provably false assertion.
There’s a bit of a problem with his claim (bolding theirs):
DC saw its deadliest year in more than two decades, with 274 people killed and a homicide rate that makes it among the deadliest cities in the country. Violent crime also spiked nearly 40 percent in the nation’s capital, driven largely by a surge of armed robberies and carjackings, many of them perpetrated by kids. The city reported more than 950 carjackings in 2023, and shocking news coverage about teen carjacking rings rattled residents and people who worked there.

Crumbleys get what they so richly deserve
PONTIAC, Mich. — The first parents to ever be charged, then convicted, in their child’s mass shooting at a U.S. school were both sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison after facing the victims during a sentencing hearing in a Michigan courtroom. James Crumbley, 47, and wife Jennifer, 46, were sentenced one after another by Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Matthews as they appeared together for the first time since they attended joint hearings before their landmark trials were separated last fall. Their son, Ethan, now 17, pleaded guilty as an adult to the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School in suburban Detroit and was sentenced to life in prison. Matthews' sentencing decision was in line with what Oakland County prosecutors had asked for after both parents were found guilty on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each of the students their son killed.*** https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/crumbley-parents-face-school-shooting-victims-families-sentencing-rcna145902

HRC problem too
→ Amnesty for terrorists: You know Amnesty International. They’re the good guys. The nice human right-sy types who are on the Right Side of History. They stick up for prisoners of conscience: brave people unjustly imprisoned for standing up for what they believe in. People like Walid Daqqah, whose death from cancer they noted with this tweet yesterday:
RIP, brother. Except, as well as being a “Palestinian writer,” Walid Daqqah was also a Palestinian terrorist. In 1986 he was convicted of ordering members of a terror group called the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine to abduct and murder a 19-year-old Israeli soldier two years earlier. It was an especially gruesome crime. From The Jewish Chronicle: “Tamam’s killers gouged out his eyes, mutilated his body, and castrated him before taking him to an olive grove and shooting him dead.” Seems to me that Daqqah deserved his life sentence. It also seems like something has gone very wrong at Amnesty. The organization throws its weight behind the likes of Walid Daqqah but pulled support for the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny because of “concerns relating to discriminatory statements.” Does torture count as discriminatory at Amnesty?
HRC & AI aren't really that keen on human rights; they just hate everything western.

Chemerinsky gets it right
→ Your constitutional right to. . . crash a party?: Every year, Erwin Chemerinsky, the dean of Berkeley Law School, invites students to his home for dinner. For that crime, Berkeley’s pro-Hamas crowd put up posters on campus that read “No dinner with Zionist Chem while Gaza starves” with this image:
Professor Chemerinsky, a leading First Amendment scholar and an advocate for free speech on campus, took this antisemitic attack remarkably well, arguing that the posters should be kept up because they were protected speech under the First Amendment. When Chemerinsky learned that activist students were threatening to protest the dinner, he decided he and his wife “would not be intimidated” and that they would go ahead with it. On Tuesday night he hosted the first of three dinners, and sure enough, anti-Israel activists made a scene. When Chemerinsky asked a protester giving a speech with a microphone to leave, she claimed she had a First Amendment right to stay put and keep talking. As Chemerinsky pointed out, that’s not really how it works. There is no First Amendment right to overstay your welcome at a dinner party. Though some of my friends act like it. Throughout all this, Chemerinsky has been a class act. “The dinners will go forward Wednesday and Thursday,” he said in his statement yesterday. “I hope there will be no disruptions; my home is not a forum for free speech. https://www.thefp.com/p/assange-curb-larry-david-cass-review-transgender

Powerful friends are a great defense
*** it’s safe to say Combs’s reign of terror rivals other big-name perpetrators of grievous abuse. If even a fraction of the worst of rumors are proven true, Combs may yet succeed in becoming the most depraved and villainous character in the history of American entertainment. Credible accusations against Combs include beating and drugging his girlfriend Cassie so regularly that she has been diagnosed with memory loss, blowing up fellow rapper Kid Cudi’s car for flirting with her, and “pimping out” Cassie and other women under his influence at sex trafficking parties held at his various estates. There are numerous other accusations of a similar nature, in addition to a prolonged history of violence dating back decades. While his many celebrity friends and allies in the media now claim “shock” at the allegations, it appears that Combs’s dark reputation was widely known among industry figures. Like Weinstein before him, Combs cultivated relationships with the most powerful people in American secular culture to conceal his nefarious behavior. His annual White Party, which afforded him the reputation of a modern-day Gatsby, attracted A-list guests for 25 years. And his longtime friendships with esteemed public figures such as Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry lent his persona a philanthropic sheen. But perhaps nothing gave Diddy’s depravity cover quite like his status as a major figure in Democratic Party politics. He’s a well-established friend of former President Barack Obama — the two have been photographed “hanging out” on numerous occasions over the years, including in his post-presidency — and Obama was fond of joking about Combs’s numerous name changes. “When Puff Daddy changed his name to P. Diddy, he wanted to change it to ‘Pimp Daddy,’” Obama once joked in an interview. “But he didn’t think we would approve.” It stands to reason that Diddy fancied himself untouchable. The two men lost control of their cars and crashed into other drivers on the highway, resulting in a string of collisions that included four additional vehicles. Dexter Reed shooting
Dexter Reed was a 26 y/o man pulled over in Chicago on 21mar24 for a minor violation. "five Chicago Police officers assigned to an 11th District tactical unit" ended up shooting him to death.
***What the videos show
In one video, an officer wearing a hooded jacket, a baseball cap and a tactical vest with a badge on it approaches the driver of a white vehicle with dark-tinted windows. “Roll the window down. Roll the window down,” the officer tells the driver. The driver initially rolled his window down but then kept rolling it back up. “What are you doing?” the officer asks. “Don’t roll the window up. Do not roll the window up!” The officer pulls on the driver’s door handle – which appears to be locked – and then draws a gun. “Unlock the doors now! Unlock the doors now!” the officer screams as another officer shouts the same demands. The driver apparently says, “OK, I’m trying to.” Seconds later, as the officer retreats from the vehicle, gunfire breaks out. Dozens of gunshots are then heard in rapid succession. Other bodycam videos show at least two other officers firing toward Reed from across the street in the residential neighborhood. Both of those officers paused to reload their guns. After the barrage of gunfire ends, Reed’s body is found lying face down behind the vehicle. “He started shooting at us,” an officer said in one of the videos. About a minute later, an officer examines Reed’s bullet-ridden car. “The gun’s right there,” the officer says, shining a flashlight into the vehicle. One officer was shot in the wrist during the gunfire and was hospitalized in good condition, Chicago police said. Now, multiple agencies are investigating whether the officers’ actions were justified.*** https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/96-shots-fired-in-a-fatal-traffic-stop-here-s-what-the-bodycam-footage-shows/ar-BB1lkrTh

Pretty good arson sentence
Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury, 29, of Madison, Wisconsin, was sentenced today to 90 months in federal prison for attempting to cause damage by means of fire or an explosive to a building in Madison. Roychowdhury attacked the building with a Molotov cocktail in the wake of the leak of the draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overruling Roe v. Wade. He targeted the building because it was occupied by an organization that opposed abortion. Roychowdhury pleaded guilty on Dec. 1, 2023. “The sentence imposed today is the result of innovative work by the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors who tirelessly investigated this case,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. “It is also a reminder that the Justice Department will hold accountable those who turn to violence as a means of intimidation.”*** On May 8, 2022, at approximately 6:06 a.m., law enforcement responded to an active fire at an office building located in Madison. Once inside the building, police observed a mason jar under a broken window; the jar was broken and the lid and screw top were burned black. The police also saw a purple disposable lighter near the mason jar. On the opposite wall from the window, the police saw another mason jar with the lid on and a blue cloth tucked into the top; the cloth was singed. The jar was about half full of a clear fluid that smelled like an accelerant. Outside of the building, someone spray painted on one wall, “If abortions aren’t safe then you aren’t either” and, on another wall, a large “A” with a circle around it and the number “1312.” During the investigation, law enforcement collected DNA from the scene of the attack. In January 2023, after reviewing surveillance video of an individual spray painting “We will get revenge” on the grounds of the Wisconsin State Capitol, law enforcement observed visual similarities to the graffiti that had been spray painted at the scene of the firebombing the year before. In March 2023, law enforcement identified Roychowdhury as a possible suspect. Local police officers observed Roychowdhury dispose of food in a public trash can; the officers recovered the leftover food and related items and law enforcement collected DNA from the food. The contents of the bag included a quarter portion of a partially eaten burrito. Law enforcement swabbed the burrito for DNA and sent the swab to an ATF lab. On March 17, 2023, law enforcement advised that a forensic biologist examined the DNA evidence recovered from the attack scene and compared it to the DNA collected from the food contents. The forensic biologist found the two samples matched and likely were the same individual. In March 2023, Roychowdhury travelled from Madison to Portland, Maine, and he purchased a one-way ticket from Boston to Guatemala City, departing March 28, 2023. Law enforcement arrested Roychowdhury at Boston Logan International Airport that day.*** https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/wisconsin-man-sentenced-prison-2022-firebombing-madison-building

“Windsor Man Hunted As Gunman In Bank Robberies,” Border Cities Star. February 15, 1933. Page 5. ---- Police Seek M. Fauria, 24 ---- Hamilton Warrants For Him and Stanley Lawrence Issued ---- Stickup on Nov. 22 ---- Auto Found in Walkerville Bought by Suspect; May Solve Series ---- BULLETIN TORONTO, Feb. 15. - Local police today issued warrants for the arrest of John Boyd, alias Stanley Lawrence, now held in Windsor, and an unnamed accomplice charging them with robbery of the Bank of Toronto branch here a few days ago when $5,000 was stolen.
With Stanley Lawrence, alias John Boyd, in custody as a suspect in the robbing of a Bank of Toronto branch in Toronto on February 8, detectives here are redoubling their efforts in a search for Marion Fauria, 24, Windsorite suspected of being the second man in the holdup.
WARRANTS ISSUED This morning a despatch from Hamilton stated that warrants had been issued there for the arrest of both Lawrence and Fauria who are wanted for the robbery of the Hamilton branch of the Royal Bank of Canada on November 22. The despatch added that the arrest of the two young men would solve s series of bank holdups in the province.
While Toronto and Windsor detectives conducting the investigation refused to comment on the Hamilton story, beyond expressing surprise that the Hamilton warrants had been Issued, it was learned from another source that a search for Fauria has been pressed since the arrest of Lawrence in a downtown hotel Monday morning.
An auto found by the Walkerville police and said to have been used in the Toronto bank robbery constituted a clue pointing directly to Fauria, who has been known here for several years through, his frequent appearances In police court for burglaries and carrying revolvers.
FAURIA’S CAR Investigation has revealed that the auto found in Walkerville was purchased by Fauria In Detroit a few days ago. and that he has been seen driving the car here within the past few days. Detective Sergeants Harold Water-house and Norman Tinsley, of the Toronto department, who have been in Windsor pursuing an Investigation since Monday night, visited Detroit yesterday. They did not discuss the results of their trip over the river. ! but it Is presumed they were checking up on the purchase of the auto and I other records in the Detroit police i bureau of identification.
Fauria is also wanted by Windsor police on a breaking and entering charge In connection with crashing a window in the Diana Shoe store, on Ouellette avenue, last year, and theft of several pairs of shoes.
Toronto police are holding Carl Cadby as the look-cut man for the bandit pair. Cadby is said to reside In the vicinity of Kenilworth avenue and Queen street east, the location cf the bank branch where the robbery occurred. He is also known to have been under suspicion here with Fauria when the pair were picked up and he'd more than a year ago for investigation.
LAWRENCE UP TOMORROW Lawrence is to appear in Windsor police court tomorrow morning on the nominal charge of being in possession of a revolver, a gun that was found under his pillow when Detectives Manwell and Campbell visited his room in a down-town hotel Monday morning. Also in his possession was $755, believed by police to be part of the $5,833 bank loot.
Fauria has been a resident of Windsor since his early years, coming here with his parents from New Orleans.
Although attempts have been made to question Lawrence he has maintained a strict silence and detectives have not yet determined whether a confederate may have the rest of the money or whether Lawrence has cached a larger sum than was actually found in his possession.
Lawrence was implicated in the robbery principally because of the gun. Two sets of the registration numbers had been filed off but a third set stamped in the breech was missed, the numbers corresponding to those borne by a gun stolen from the teller's cage at the time of the stick-up.
While Detective Waterhouse would make no comment on progress of the investigation, he stated that co-operation afforded by Windsor and Detroit police was of the best. He had high praise for Detectives Campbell and Maxwell, who arrested Lawrence.
CADBY ARRESTED TORONTO. Feb. 15. Carl Cadby was arrested as a material witness today in connection with, the Bank of Toronto $5,000 robbery last week. He appeared in police court today on a nominal charge of vagrancy and was remanded until tomorrow. It is understood Cadby is wanted In connection with the identification of John Boyd, now held in Windsor and believed by police to be connected with the robbery.

American Women Entrepreneurs
In the United States, the number of women entrepreneurs is increasing. In reality, since 1997, the number of women-run companies has climbed by 5%.
The inspiring life narrative of J.K. Rowling demonstrates that everyone can succeed. She has become a global humanitarian in addition to a celebrity and wealth: an English author and director, J.K. Rowling. More than 450 million copies of her book Harry Potter have been sold globally. It has surpassed all other film series in terms of box office success. But it wasn't an easy road to this triumph.
Rowling faced several difficulties on the road. Oxford turned her down after completing her studies at the University of Exeter. Rowling came up with the concept for the first book in the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone series while waiting for a train in 1990.
She was a poor single mother reliant on social handouts at the time. In Portugal, Rowling first met her husband, Jorge Arantes. But after only eleven months, they broke up. Their split caused JK a lot of distress. She eventually filed for divorce a few years later. She had a young daughter at the time. This hampered her ability to balance her profession and family.
Indian industrialist Sminu Jindal is a first-time participant. She has a history of making her company an industry leader and has shattered the glass barrier in several industries, including the oil and gas sector. She received an award for excellence as the top female entrepreneur in India from the esteemed Institute of Marketing and Management, New Delhi, as a testament to her business acumen.
She has led the initiative in establishing Svayam, a nonprofit organization, in addition to her position at Jindal. This effort attempts to improve accessibility for those with limited mobility to public infrastructure. It is specifically intended to help people with impairments so they can participate in society.
She was one of the 16 keynote presenters at the EO Global Leadership Conference and chaired the Assocham National Council on Iron and Steel. At the conference, Jindal discussed her organization's progress in solving the accessibility issue and urged everyone to grab the reins and contribute to the drive to create a more inclusive world.
American neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor is also a well-known public speaker, best-selling author, and member of the TED Speakers Bureau. She is also an active supporter of neurological healing and a philanthropist.
A Brain Scientist's Journey was published in 2006. An autobiographical account of her eight-year rehabilitation from a stroke, the book is written by the author. The New York Times named it a "Best Book, " a best seller that went 63 weeks on the bestseller list.
Her other achievements include speaking at the TED Conference in February 2008 and giving a TED lecture that same year. The TED conference and the TED lecture attracted much media attention and were heavily trafficked online. Millions of people attended the TED Conference, and over 27 million individuals watched the TED speech. An 18-minute video by brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor on her experience with a significant stroke was the most-watched talk at the TED conference.
Employment law is a specialty of Jennifer Duggan's. She has represented and defended employers in employment litigation for almost 20 years. She has assisted her clients in resolving PAGA claims, wage and hour class actions, and discrimination claims. Her firm has also effectively protected people from employment litigation based on torts and retaliation.
The firm's practice areas are centered on reducing lawsuit risk and addressing personnel issues early on. Duggan's team works closely with their clients to ensure they are protected against the dangers of employment disputes using their considerable understanding of business and employment law. They have successfully represented employers in employment cases by applying their in-depth legal knowledge and obtained several advantageous settlements for their clients.

BREAKING NEWS: 'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' comes to an abrupt end after Season 5 [#K5NewsFMExclusive]
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- The cancellation of the beloved 2015 animated series 'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' after Season 5 has taken cartoon fans worldwide by surprise, leaving them perplexed about the fate of the anticipated 6th and 7th seasons. The unexpected revelation came to light in a phone interview conducted by Billboard Magazine News with Ross Bagdasarian Jr., who is a show's executive producer.
'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' first graced television screens in the early mid-May of 2015, with Nickelodeon Asia hosting the world premiere. The Philippines, in particular, witnessed the show's debut through a live streaming simulcast on iWantTV (now known as iWantTFC), marking a cultural touchstone, 5 years before the global Coronavirus Disease-19 (CoViD-19) pandemic struck.
Before captivating audiences in Asia and the United States of America (U.S.A.), the French children's programming block "M6 Kid", took the lead in introducing the mischievous Chipmunks to the viewers in France alone. Airing from late-March 2015 until March 4th, 2023; 'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' on M6 Kid covered Seasons 1 through 5, culminating in an unexpected halt to the series.
The heartbreak intensified with Bagdasarian Jr.'s revelation to the Billboard Magazine News that production had ceased the year before, leading to the cancellation of the anticipated 6th and 7th seasons. The news marks the end of an era for the animated sensation, leaving fans grappling with the sudden farewell to the charismatic Seville trios of Alvin, Simon and Theodore.
DWFH-FM 97.7mhz's K5 News FM Dumaguete learns that the untimely end of 'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' has left fans and industry insiders alike wondering about the reasons behind this abrupt decision.
The show's popularity transcended borders, with its catchy tunes such as "It's a Magical World", "Busy as a Bee", etc., and endearing characters winning the hearts of audiences globally. The French connection to 'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' adds an intriguing layer to its narrative. A kids' show often serves as a cultural ambassador, and M6 Kid played a pivotal role in introducing the Chipmunks to French audiences, setting the stage for the show's international success.
As we bid farewell to the mischievous Seville brother's trio, it's worth noting that the 5th season, now revealed as the final chapter, encapsulates the charm and nostalgia that 'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' brought to fans worldwide, and even right here in Central Visayas and Negros Oriental. The French TV series not only entertained but also resonated with audiences of all ages, making it a memorable chapter in the world of animated entertainment.
For now, fans are left with the echoes of those catchy Chipmunk tunes, reminiscing about the adventures that Alvin Seville, Simon Seville and Theodore Seville brought into their lives. The legacy of 'Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks' will undoubtedly endure, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who danced to their tunes and laughed at their antics.

Abducted Amphora
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Marcus Pike x Reader
Warnings: Alcohol (not to an excess), food mention (they eat pizza), non-explicit tension, mentions of stealing shit, hints at a boss/employee relationship so there’s a slight power balance there, age gap that isn’t mentioned (he has years of service and she’s almost brand new)
Word count: 1,972
Author’s note: Written for @autumnleaves1991-blog Writer Wednesday! Lightly edited, unbeta’d. This one is pretty tame compared to my other works. Thinking about turning it into a snapshot series. Let me know what you think!
A smattering of footsteps clatter throughout the courtyard, echoing off the old walls that surround you. Sprawling greens adorn almost every inch of the balcony, reaching out to an impossibly blue pool situated in the middle. You can’t help but gawk as you walk through the museum, trailing your boss by a few paces who is currently following the curator, a middle-aged woman with bouncy curls and a wardrobe to die for.
A few minutes prior, she had introduced herself as Vanessa Harrington, given a firm handshake to the two of you, and hastily made her way to the exhibit where an expensive piece of artwork was stolen.
“What’s weird is, this isn’t even the most expensive piece the museum owns,” she says, glancing backwards and waving her hands. How she manages to walk briskly in stiletto heels without looking forwards is a mystery to you.
The stolen piece is a Panathenaic amphora from Hellenistic era Greece. It was most likely used to fill with olive oil to give to Olympic champions. Not to say it isn’t valuable, but it had sat nondescript amongst bright and flashy paintings that were incredibly rare and sought after.
“And the security cameras were disabled prior to the theft?” Your boss, Marcus Pike asks, scribbling in his notepad. Vanessa nods in confirmation. “Then they were enabled right after, as if the thieves knew how to hack into the system.”
“Either they knew how to hack into the security system or they had enough insider knowledge to disable it,” you voice your thoughts, not even aware that you were speaking out loud.
Marcus looks over to you, his warm brown eyes flicking over your face in acknowledgement.
Every time his eyes meet yours, you feel yourself freeze up for a moment. No matter that you’ve been working with him for nearly a year, it’s as if time stops every time you look at him. His jaw, square and strong, along with his soft brown eyes that give away to his emotions at any moment. His broad shoulders always manage to get your pulse going, along with his small waist, showcased by the form-fitting button downs he wore under his suit coat.
“We’re going to need all information regarding museum personnel, as well as any vendors that drop by regularly,” Marcus shifts his attention over to Vanessa, who nods decisively.
“Absolutely. I have that all on my office desktop and can get that to you ASAP.”
Vanessa doles out more details for a few minutes and Marcus jots them down– in his unreadable handwriting no doubt– and then Vanessa bids you adieu and spins on her heel to her office, giving you two free rein over the museum.
There isn’t anymore DNA evidence to go over. The local police already had their personnel collect it days prior and the scene was spotless once you arrived. The thieves had been meticulous in leaving as little evidence as possible. The only fingerprints found were already processed and pending a match. They were most likely from an employee, and there’s a good chance it was just normal prints left behind from dusting priceless artwork.
Once Vanessa is out of the room, Marcus turns and places a big hand on your bicep.
“Good job back there, agent.” He flashes an easy grin. Marcus is an incredible boss. He’s driven, observant, kind, and knows when he has to make the tough calls. He’s a natural-born leader. You haven’t been with the bureau for long, being a junior agent among a team of seasoned professionals, but comparing him to other supervisory agents you have met, he’s warm and kind, always making sure his team is in good shape. He’s the kind of guy who’s prepared for anything, whether it be backup for a shootout with an unsub or someone in the room needs a pen before a staff meeting.
You can’t help but feel flushed at his praise. Despite Marcus’ easygoing nature and his openness with the team, he always seems to keep you at an arms’ length. It was getting to the point where you were wondering if he was regretting hiring you in the first place. Marcus often rotates the team when it comes to working directly with him on cases, and you have only worked directly with him once– your first ever case.
Initially you’re convinced you fucked up so badly that he didn’t want to pair up with you afterwards, but then the case report made its way back to your desk and your evaluation was normal, good even.
“Thank you,” you reply, ducking your face down to hide the growing heat licking its way up your face.
“Let’s grab some lunch, get those files from Mrs. Harringon and start digging.”
You nod in agreement and turn, walking towards the exit. You don’t notice the subtle movement, but Marcus trails you, arm raised as if he’s about to touch your waist, but pauses halfway through and scratches at his chin.
Later on that night, you’re holed up in Marcus’ hotel room, hunched over your laptop reading up on all of the museum employees. Marcus took on the task of reading over vendor files, his shoulders set much straighter.
Your back is screaming at you and your eyes are sapped of all moisture as you blink rapidly, trying to will your tear ducts into submission. It’s too early in the night to fall asleep with the amount of work you have to look forward to, and the longer it takes you to crack the case, the more likely the thieves are to get away with the crime.
“I think we could use a break,” Marcus says from across the room. You look up blearily, noting the look of concern he’s giving you, brow furrowed. He must have caught you in your tired state somehow, between poring over files and jiggling his leg absent-mindedly.
“Can’t argue with that,” you chuckle, rubbing at your eyes.
“I’ll order room service, compliments of the bureau,” he says, smiling sideways. “I’m feeling pizza, what do you think?”
“Pizza sounds heavenly,” you groan.
“What do you want to drink?” Marcus asks, his eyes scanning over the menu unfolded next to his laptop.
“Oh, uh,” you hesitate, trying to decide on caffeine or something healthier. “I think the room has plenty of water.”
“I was thinking something a little stronger,” he says, a small grin making its way over his features. “Nothing too crazy, since we still have work to do.”
“What’s your opinion on red wine?” You ask, wanting to select something you both can agree on.
“I love it,” he says, giving you a toothy smile. “Pinot Noir?”
“Sounds perfect.”
An hour later, you’re both seated on the floor, pizza box spread open between your bodies, munching away at the slices of pepperoni you both decided on and sharing the bottle of wine Marcus ordered.
“Turns out it’s bad optics for the boss to drunkenly sing 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton off-key, and I still get teased for it to this day, which is why I refuse to join the team on karaoke nights,” Marcus finishes. You’re clutching your stomach as you laugh at his story, head thrown back as you giggle.
You’ve only had a glass and a half of wine at this point, but you can already feel a persistent buzzing in your brain, your head feeling much lighter and much heavier simultaneously. This is what you get for skipping breakfast and lunch, opting to replace them with an afternoon snack and a late dinner.
Marcus laughs along with you, shaking his head and looking down at his slice of pizza.
Your laughter dies down and there’s a moment where it’s quiet, the only noise in the room being Marcus chewing on the crust of his pizza slice, and you taking a sip from your glass.
“This is a nice change,” you blurt out, immediately regretting your outburst.
“Mmm,” Marcus hums around the bite in his mouth. He swallows and looks up at you in question.
“What do you mean?” he asks.
Your eyes meet after he speaks and you can feel your heartbeat accelerating in your chest. God, why did you have to open your big mouth?
“Oh, nothing,” you shake your head. “It’s just…”
You don’t continue and Marcus shifts on his knees, leaning forwards to spur you on.
“It’s just what?”
“Well, I don’t know, it’s stupid.” You say, studying the box of pizza below you, as if it was the most interesting thing in the world.
“Nothing you could ever say is stupid,” he says with conviction. His tone makes you look up at him in wonder.
“Tell me, please,” he adds softly.
“Well, I thought you didn’t like me. Or that you didn’t think I was a good agent.” You can feel your stomach plunging and your cheeks burning at the admission.
“Why would you think that?” Marcus almost looks hurt.
“God, it’s dumb,” you babble. “But I noticed you haven’t had me partner with you on a case in ages, and you seem to get on with the rest of the team so much easier.”
You risk another look into Marcus’ eyes and he looks absolutely crushed. He cards a hand through his locks and his eyes look far away for a moment. You physically deflate, feeling like the biggest asshole on the planet.
“Hey,” he says, scooting forward and moving the pizza box aside. “You’re an amazing agent. Everything I put in your evals are the truth.”
You don’t reply, but smile softly at him.
“I’m so sorry I’ve made you feel undervalued,” he puts a hand on your shoulder and squeezes it. The look on his face, much closer to yours now, is absolutely putting you through the ringer.
Marcus looks disheveled, which is rare for him, as he always looks put-together in the office, not a hair or thread out of place in his tailored suits. His hair is sticking up and his tie is loosened. His brow is furrowed in concern and you have the overwhelming urge to soothe your thumb over it.
“I just–,” he starts and pauses, trying to come up with the right words. “I was so distracted during that case with you, and I never want to put you in that kind of danger again. Especially as a junior agent.”
Distracted?
“What do you mean?” You ask, blinking in confusion. What could have possibly distracted him from the case? This man, so motivated, so focused. He was diligent to a fault, at times.
“I–”
He’s cut off by his cell phone, ringing insistently in his pants pocket. He lifts a finger to pause the conversation and answers the phone.
His expression is focused as he listens to the other end of the line, murmuring affirmations as the call continues.
“Okay, sounds good. We’ll be there first thing in the morning.”
He hangs up the phone, shifts his legs and stuffs it back in his pocket.
“We’ve got a lead on the suspects,” he tells you. “A bodega near the museum has a security camera that caught a large utility van parked in front, right around the time the amphora was stolen. The owner said they’re only available to talk before they open, so we have to be there by 5:30 AM.”
You scramble to your feet and shut your laptop while Marcus clears the pizza and wine. You watch him silently as he finishes the task, noting his stiff shoulders and the carefully neutral expression on his face.
You’ll have to ask Marcus about the conversation later, if you can work yourself up to it. For now, you’ll let your imagination run wild and hope someday you can get over this juvenile crush you have on your boss.

A Granada Hills homeowner shot and killed an attempted home invasion burglar early Saturday morning and authorities believe another suspect who fled the scene was also possibly shot.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded around 5 a.m. to a "hot prowler" call in the 11400 block of Swinton Avenue near Rinaldi Avenue and found the suspect dead inside the home.
During a Saturday morning news conference, LAPD Valley Bureau Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said preliminary investigations show that a suspect who was armed with a weapon confronted the homeowner and that's when the shooting happened.
"During that burglary, multiple rounds were fired by the homeowner and the homeowner struck one of the burglary suspects," said Hamilton.
The suspect suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say he was in possession of the victim's property at the time of the shooting.
The homeowner's grandmother and preschool-aged child were also home during the invasion.
Hamilton said it is believed that another suspect was shot because there was a blood trail from the home.
"There was a blood trail and we trailed it to the end," Hamilton said. "We believe there were at least one or two additional suspects involved in this burglary that left this scene, following the shooting by the homeowner."
On Monday, authorities identified the suspect whom was shot by the homeowner as 20-year-old Inglewood man Abednego Adre.
At the time of the news conference, Hamilton said all three family members were at the Devonshire Station as the homeowner who shot the burglar underwent questioning.
A neighbor spoke about the incident and said he was not surprised the shooting happened because burglaries occur daily in the neighborhood.
"I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised at all that this has happened. It's been a real problem here. The residents here are fed up," neighbor Pat Walsh said. He said the frequency of the burglaries led to the title, "dinner-time burglaries."
Hamilton acknowledged the frequency of burglaries in the area, saying he doesn't know why specific areas are being targeted.
"Our Devonshire detectives have been investigating a number of burglaries in this area that have been centered north and south of Rinaldi and we believe this incident is related to that series of crimes," Hamilton said. He continued saying that these suspects may be responsible for a string of similar burglaries in the area.
Police also recovered a black BMW sedan from the scene, which is said to be the suspect vehicle that may also provide additional evidence to help locate the suspects who fled.
As to the homeowner who shot the would-be burglar, Hamilton said once police have concluded their investigation and submitted their report, it will be up to the District Attorney's Office to make the ultimate determination if criminal charges will be filed or not against the homeowner.
"Anyone inside their residence that is faced with a deadly threat and is perceived as a deadly threat has the right to protect themselves," Hamilton said.
