What if

What if I told you I see some similarities with the endings of Code Geass and Madoka Magica? Yeah, I know they are two complete different anime but HEAR ME OUT

A character who comes to the final decision of making the ultimate sacrifice to the betterment of the world: Lelouch and Madoka (The thing is that Lelouch dies and Madoka ascends to godhood but still)

A character who basically is a knight to the former, watches them make their sacrifice by essentially dying and vows to continue living in their name even though they actually wanted to die because of their actions: Suzaku and Homura (Yeah, Suzaku kills Lelouch and Homura just sees Madoka make her wish and become god)

AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED WITH THE WHOLE ASS CHRISTIANITY SYMBOLISM IN BOTH SHOWS 😭😭😭

And please, keep in mind I'm NOT comparing the characters, they all are written differently and have their own stories, I'm just saying that their roles at the end of each anime (that ends with the protagonist making a sacrifice while their friend just continues protecting everyone for them) is just similar for me.

what’s your opinion on monstrous transformations (both fast and slow), and also more controversially what do you think about having monsters/nonhuman characters serve as minority allegory (as opposed to society’s hate for them being being an allegory)

ohhh hold on this is a rly good question i think abt a Lot actually.

ok getting the first bit out of the way, love a good monstrous transformation. fast, slow, its all good. i personally like gradual slow shifts the most but its a situational thing. transformation is one of those things that like just always has to be symbolic. even more than the degree to which Everything is symbolic ya know. so like context rly matters when it comes to how to invoke it most effectively.

MOVING ON

i think from the phrasing of the ask ur looking for something more along the lines of like. for example shapeshifters as representation of nonbinary people or aliens as representation of different cultures rather than like monsters vs humans as allegory for racism. but im also not sure you can meaningfully separate the two! the latter i think is more overused so it like registers more as an immediate red flag, but its like. if the aliens from avatar werent being violently invaded by humans it wouldnt make like their reskinned stereotypical indigeneity anymore tolerable i dont think.

which isnt to say i think every story that draws connections between fantastical fictional species and real world people are inherently bad. i dont really think theres any trope that i believe cant be handled well by anyone under any circumstance. the super easy fix to bad rep via monster or fantasy creature characters is basically just have actual humans who also represent those same identities and communities and experiences so that the audience isnt drawn to connect the traits of any one group with your fictional species.

the harder fix is to like seriously analyze why you want this character to be a monster and what that says about them and what that says about you and your own experiences and biases and what you actually want to communicate with the inclusion of this character. and when applicable hire a sensitivity reader. its kinda crazy how many pieces of media seem to prefer half-assing the hard way over just doing the easy thing and not assigning the status of token minority to a literal monster.

of course once again all of this is ya know circumstantial. im speaking to like my own experiences and the things ive observed. and its weird too! bc im also speaking as someone who like is trans and nonbinary and thinks of myself and my gender expression as inherently intertwined with monstrosity. and as someone who is autistic and thinks of myself as a changeling. and as someone who is a fat person who represents themself with a pig themed sona. if i talk abt cringeass hollywood blockbusters engaging in High Fantasy Racism i feel like to be fair i kinda have to talk about independent own-voices creators who write stories and make art about their own identities in the lovely language of monstrosity. theres not rly a way to draw a hard line around the former without the risk of catching some of the latter.

so umm as usual i dont rly have a snappy all encompassing answer for how i feel abt this kind of characterization. im simply too much of a Nuance Enjoyer. i do i guess think this is something that generally turns out better when it is someone making art about their own experiences, but also unless i believe minority artists are a monolith, which i dont, i need to accept that artists will inevitably make stuff that is beautiful and resonant to some people and totally repugnant and offensive to others, and that both of those responses can be like totally justified and correct. thats art babey!

anyway slight digression but i think any case where a character feels more like an allegory than a fully fleshed u know Character is gonna flop for me no matter how relatable it is. tbqh, id rather more ppl try and fail to make beautiful grotesque frightening sensually moving monsters out of their lived experiences and their empathetic connections with others than succeed at creating bland toothless universally approachable Good Rep tm. if u know u know. if u feel me u feel me. that is all.

What do you think Sasuke would major in? I see philosophy, maybe politics ? I feel like he'd grow up to be very opinionated about politics and stuff, like if we keep the kinda canon pipeline hole would be from a minority ethnic groupe , also I feel like he'd be into climate activism or maybe something to do with animal research, like on reptilian species at risk of extinction... Maybe even literature? He strikes me as a very well read individual who actually enjoys art and literature in general especially historical and cultural heritage pieces ... Overall I really never understood why so many people put him in the engineering or economy party ? Other than the famous " to work fory parents firm even this I am not passionate about this " trope ..

okay im gonna start being honest that i dont have this as well thought as you and my tags were just more jokingly because business major sasuke is so overused when nothing about sasuke gives the impression he would major in that but yeah.

but in general i dont judge much the major they give him because the problem with sasuke is that its such a character that its soooo difficult to take away from canon and put into a random modern universe setting to me. like sasuke's whole personality is based on te events that happened to him but if we take sasuke out of the narutoverse and into a modern au when the massacre of his people doesnt happen or hes isnt raised in a system where hes meant to be used as a tool who would he be?? like sasuke its even more difficult than naruto who we see having hobbies like growing plants at his place or just loving eating ramen etc. most of sasuke's actions in canon are directed to his arc because thanks to itachi's influence sasuke made killing his brother his life goal but also his whole focus (which is really sad to think of). even in the databooks is listed that sasuke eats healthy and his favorite things are stuff like training, this all obviously is because his mind is mostly focused in how to get stronger all the time. thats why my favorite type of fics are (or were since i dont read much these days) the ones where they explore sasuke in his travels post war where he has an opportunity to breath and find things he likes to do. i feel like naruto would teach him about gardening especially if he gets to grow tomatoes and all.

but again in a modern au its just difficult to see sasuke i think something with animals would be nice and he does seem fond of animals in canon. literature too, since sasuke is known to be smart i think he would enjoy it. i dont know about politics, i can see him having very strong opinions but not really majoring in it (unless we translate the uchiha massacre to the modern au too then yeah hes plotting the entire goverment and country's fall who knows)

i also dont like that trope of sasuke doing a major hes not interested because pressure from his parents. i would probably like it more if they added the fact that its not just sasuke doing things to get praise from his parents (although in canon its just his dad he wants the praise from since w mikoto this isnt shown) but also because of him feeling less because itachi. like i feel ppl forget that yeah sasuke loves his brother endlessly but even before the massacre he had his issues because itachi seemed to be great at everything which imo gives their dynamic more naunce

anyways sorry i got carried away from the actual question and that i couldnt give u an answer im not usually into modern aus especially when it comes to naruto because i feel like a lot of meaning in the dynamics and characterization gets lost

My thoughts on Watching and Dreaming

I watched the episode when it premeired last night but i hit post limit so couldnt post about it. Spoilers under the cut. sorry if anything is out of order lol im sick and im just throwing everything i thought last night down on this post.

-Luz being attacked by Amity genuinely made me cry

-"My girlfriend is too big a nerd to misremember an Azura quote" -luz probably

-Lilith having the haircut from For the Future but color scheme from season 1 is a nice touch

-The giant stone Flapjack in Luz's nightmare killed me and not in the good funny way but in the sad crying way

Scum villain fandom dont hate me >.<

I know I'm becomming that person who points and says I see scum villain in EVERYTHING! BUT I just can't with the parralels just a little.

So having said that- I think Airplane Shang Qinghua absolutely took 'inspiration [aka stole] the Idea of PIDW from tekken.

Bear with me.

Luo Binghe is based on Jin Kazama.

Both signature colours are red black and white. Both are the MC sure its probably a sterotypical trope- but a mc who struggles and strives to be strong and has an angst ridden story line filled with hardships and betrayell. Has a close relationship with his mother who DIED, and has a rocky non existent relationship with his father, sound familiar?

That Binghe is a heavenly demon and Jin has the DEVIl gene? That Binghe is half human and half demon like his mother father. Jin uses half of the Kazuya and Kazama fighting style?

Both were BETRAYED by a 'father figure' who 'taught' him how to fight!?

Shen Qingqiu and Heichi were similar! Since BOTH OF THEM toss young boys of cliffs!

both taught the main Protagonist and even when they had their own gains or looked down on MC still saw them as disposible and looked down on them ALSO ALSO both have a close relationship with the childhood best friend-

Ning Yingying and Ling Xiaoyu! The MC's CHILDHOOD best friend.

Heichi took in Xiaoyu and trained her and both have a love for bears [Kuma/Panda] and Shen Qingqiu dotes on Ning Yingying! Both Yingying and Xiaoyu are the naive bubbly love interest to the Main character Binghe/Jin!

But thats not all their is to it!

The other tekken ladies seem similair to the wives of Luo Binghe!

Sha Hualing is like Anna Williams, both red based characters who are reduced to dramtic pouty lackeys, both are cheeky and sexy but both also have this rocky relationship with another women who is more classy and more competent.

Liu Mingyan and Nina Williams, both purple types who work alongside the MC and have a strong driven focus for their own gains. Both are the powerful femme fatal and when compared to the red types come across as classy and reducing the other two as tacky.

and dont FORGET Julia Cheng and Michelle Cheng even though they are mother/daughter they are similair to the QIn Sisters qin wanyue and Qin Wanrong.

The eldest sibling like Michelle is older, wiser and more subdued but is kinda underrated and forgotten even though she's seen as more competent both the qin sisters are forgotten just like the Chengs are forgotten as their not as popular in tekken.

And Qin Wanrong is a bit immature but has a loud brash personality, even Julias personality is a bit brash and energetic. Both are similair in a way other than their hairstyles. [Plaites]

Asuka Kazama and Qui Haitang are similair as the bases of the wronged femine character seeking justice as Asukas dojo was wrecked and Qui Haitangs burned to the ground both were then drawn into the mc for their need for justice. Both were even 'love interests' for the MC but with some tweaks that later changed.

And with how Scum Villain refers to the other wives as #wife.no instead of their names and how airplane re-used common story lines.

No different how most tekken women ALSO fall into the trope of overused or end up being forgotten in favour of more popular tekken women or how most blend together and just seem copy pasted.

So yeah I just noticed this parralell and thought it was kinda scary how similair the characters were to each other.

What are your LEAST favourite analog horror series and tropes?

I can’t stand EAS scenarios, sticking to one format and synthetic voices.

They can be used well, sure.

There’s one big thing that always irritates me in analog horror, and it’s when they throw in some random awful event just to try to make it creepier. It doesn’t advance the story, it doesn’t add to the lore, it’s not something well made or interesting or unique. They just add something awful to make you uncomfortable because they can’t make real horror.

It’s why I could never really get into the painter. It’s just kinda dull. It’s the same format over and over with a few weird pictures and some text thats like “this person was alive when they got stabbed in the face. That would suck huh” like ok, cool, I guess it would.

There’s no element of real story, it’s not building up to anything. I’m not watching the next video thinking it’s going to be even better than the last one. The only thing keeping you watching is the hope that eventually they’ll show you something weird. I can’t get into an analog horror series where the only point of interest is “hey, isn’t this fucked up?”.

They really just spoon feed you the horror. Urban spook has never heard of show don’t tell.

Reading this back I guess that’s more two things.

My least favourite tropes in analog horror are shock for the sake of shock and explaining why something is scary.

Other than that I’d say I like most of the other tropes, even if they might be overused. Things like synthetic voices and EAS scenarios were always things I myself liked, although I get why they’d get annoying over time.

As for my least favourite series, I think you could figure it out from what I already wrote lol.

The Warring Visions of Gravity Rush

Well I don't have the motivation to concentrate on something more productive, might as well atleast write out my spit-take.

Gravity Rush has bad direction. Fitting about a game where you are falling upwards...

Or better said, it has like five different "directions" that clash. And I don't mean in a way that compliments each other or that leads to something interesting, but more just so that it pulls everything down as gravity tends to do.

But what do I mean by this? Well lets talk about Gravity Rush as the marketing idea, as the ideal you have in your head when you imagine this "totally hidden gem revolutionary experience!"

You might see the crazy gameplay, or the few pieces of promo that had this atmosphere that is hard to describe. Or you saw the main protagonist and had some reservations and thought "well she may be designed to appeal to one's lower insticts, but still she has a weird dress and look, so it probably isn't all just that, right?"

Right - its partly like that. And thats the first part that really clashes and jusy kinda makes one groan while playing - Kat is the most boring animu girl you could imagine, inclusive of all the worst cliches, like literally the overplayed scene of a kinda loser male lead stumbling upon her after a shower and her losing the towel, even a deaf person could here the "Baka!" screeching in the void of the evil eye...

But how much can one cry about the evils of some anime thot and overused tropes? But that isnt the only kinda meh direction - cause they also go for the superhero thing. Yeah, maybe it was a different time when the game released, but in this day I am sorry, somehow superheros are the most lame thing I can imagine. I mean I loved the Raimi Spiderman movies but after that it just allways felt kinda dumb - even with anime I atleast have this connection of watching and finding some stuff interesting as a teen, while superheros just looked childish even back in the day.

Still, thats just personal stuff, and comics are comics, heroes are heroes, where is the problem, right, they are not different directions, I'm just making an arbitrary distinction.

Well maybe, but there are a few more cardinal things that truly show the wrong way the game took. Cause as I said it has this whole ethereal, mysterious vibe - and combined with the previous stuff it just synthesises into some corrosive poison, making my enthusiasm melt as fast as I have to play another wacky dream sequence or see some other hatsune miku haired plot device explain time dillation - it just blends into a stew with no taste or texture.

But that still isnt the whole story - the whole game trys to go in the whimsical direction, like that one french movie "Amile" (with the fake language sounding like French) - with all the all town looking citys and music - but combined with everything else, it just kinda makes the sound feel flat and lifeless, - especially when one doesnt see Kat being this mysterious nonchalant force in this world - well maybe in moments - but that breaks down cause we have to do the whole "insecure teenage girl who wants to find a bf" thing which breaks everything.

But I dunno, maybe Im too harsh, maybe I'm just projecting my own current bad mood on some old ps vita game - in the end I had fun, and the most fun I had... Was when after finishing the game I collected gems after having many movement updated while blasting this:

And this is kinda my point,my synthesis - It isnt impossible to mash things together that seem to fight against each other - one just needs the vission.

Hell, to prove my point - I will even go against my prude persona, and give an example that keeps the fanservice aspects:

What if, to show the otherwordless of Kat, how she is a stranger that changes this mysterious world, she actually doesnt even mind when somebody sees her naked? Is maybe even confused? (Hell, plays with the garden of Eden imagary that went nowhere if the spoilers of the sequel I read were right ((yeah I know it also was Newtons apple cause of Gravity, but things can have double meanings) - maybe have Kat be amused at being called a superhero, being a friend to children so being happy if they are - maybe then the whimsical music would work too - being from the perspective of a desolate town being visited by a elf-like being who brightens their day and solves their problems?

Maybe make Kat show that she understands the cryptic meta stuff (but in a subtle way) - basically keeping the feeling of mystery, making the player wonder, if they themselves understand the person they are literally playing as (I know one usually wants players to connect with the charachter, but I think in this case it would work)

So yeah, I dunno, maybe Im the only person in all of time that sees it this way. Maybe the direction they went is actually the right one-

Nah I cant say that after watching that animation that supposedly connects the first game to the sequel : With all the most boring cliches of "Oh the happy go lucky protagonist that loves food!" and "oh these cute girls sure love touching each other, arent they cute😉, figurine link to your left💲" - and then ending with some nonsense fight against enemys that have the same design philosophy as Vtubers... Yeez louis😂

And then reading how the story basically retcons away the kids who were lost in the past in some DLC and introducing even more Meta peeps like some guy who represents the game being programming, and the evil being electrycite which seems to be faux deep like "wow its a steam world and they put away the dangerous of this technology🤯" - like they have literal airships and jetpacks and the protagonist has gravity powers aint nothing impressive or dangerous about electricity😂

I dunno, in the end, what I mean is that Gravity Rush is an idea that had potential, that even has fun gameplay and great moments, so its sad when something like that gets dragged down to the levels of those awful on all levels Waifu Rpgs like Xenoblade 2 (yeez louis, even without all the drama, its gameplay looks like waterboarding to me "watch these shitty animations and cluttered ui while grinding and collecting crap for 80 hours!")

JUST SOME LEON/SONIA IDEA DUMPING BUT,.,..,,

imagine leon and sonia hanging out at her camp in the wild area. they're just chilling, Leon was on his way to motostoke when he spotted her fishing by south lake miloch and decided to drop in and say hi, spend some time with his best friend. they just laugh about dumb things they see around galar and dumb people they've run into. they let yamper and charizard play around in the grass since they're also best friends and don't get to hang out too often. 

Sonia invites him to stay for dinner and mentions she wanted to try out a new curry recipe shes been working on, and HELL YEAH he's not gonna say no to that, he loves her cooking. so he helps her chop up leeks and berries and fans the campfire while she cooks the curry, chit-chatting about hop and Gloria and that white-haired, old lady looking ass kid. little glowing cutifly’s buzz around the campsite. and of course, her curry is wonderful, as always. yamper and Charizard eat a whole plateful each, and Leon pretty much gobbles down about three.

and right before they finish dinner they hear thunder. it's about the time of night the weather in the wild area changes gears. at first they both just kinda laugh it off saying “Naw we’re probably fine it sounded far off haha.” and then the familiar sound of pouring rain slowly gets louder and louder. 

and pretty soon they’re running like crazy, grabbing the curry pot, putting their pokemon back into their pokeballs and diving for cover into sonia’s tent. (luckily the curry survived). now theyre both panting and giggling, sonia laughs about how she forgot how rapid the weather changes there. 

and it pretty much dawns on them both at the same time that he might have to stay there with her until the rain stops. Leon says, “It’ll be fine, I’ll leave when the rain lets up” with a cheeky grin and a wave of his hand. the rain did not let up. at all. 

so they go over the options. flying taxis don’t operate in thunderstorms, its too dangerous. charizard can’t fly in the rain. leon mentions he could probably make a run for it, but without charizard he’d just get lost and wander around forever until he fell into a pit and died or something. sonia could go with him, but she left all her makeup and extra clothes at home that day and there was NO WAY she was gonna walk around motostoke tomorrow looking like something the purrloin dragged in. she would rather just have him stay there. 

the tent was small, but not that small. they could sleep there on opposite sides of the tent without it being TOO weird. i guess he’s staying the night then. 

leon takes off his wet cape and hat. he notices how comfortable her tent is. the bottom of it is at least 4 inches of soft plush. easy to sleep on. she has a bunch of pillows, blankets, comfort items in the corner stacked up, and a lantern on the tent wall (the curry pot is in another corner). “How come your tent is so premium??” he asks with confusion and some jealousy. he had to sleep on the most basic, hard-ass floor tent ever during their adveture. heck, he STILL DOES when he goes camping. 

sonia just huffs in pride. “Leon, I’m a camping master. Qualitity of life is a top priority of mine.” he notices a little patch of duct tape on the roof keeping the rain out, and jokingly mocks her as he points to it. “Oh yeah, quality duct tape repairs-” which earns him a playful punch on the arm from her. 

she slides him some soft pillows and blankets for his side of the tent. hes not really sure what to do with himself. i mean, hes glad shes letting him stay, but it still feels like hes intruding. they’ve had sleepovers before a lot when they were kids, but they’re not kids anymore. and they’ve never slept this close. after a few moments of silence, leon just asks “...wanna watch that new ghost-hunting show on youtube...?” sonia blinks, thinking for a moment, before saying “Okay!” 

for the next few hours they just binge watch the ghost-hunting show, wrapped in warm blankets and comfortable pillows. leons rotom phone hovering in the air above them on autoplay. sonia finds herself leaning her head against leons shoulder to watch, but neither of them are uncomfortable with it. its not that scary of a show. they just laugh at the stupid banter between the ghost hunters. 

the rain is a little lighter now, and they’ve binged quite a bit of episodes at this point. leons rotom phone pauses they auto-play to make sure theyre still watching. “Wanna watch the next season?” Leon asks her, but when he turns to her, shes asleep. on his shoulder. just snoozing away. and he freezes. 

he stays like that for a bit just hoping he didnt wake her up with his loud-ass question. after a few moments, he has the rotom turn off the latern on the tent wall, and then go back into his bag. 

he shifts his position a bit, and pulls the covers up over her shoulders. shes cute when shes asleep, he thinks. shes cuter when shes sleeping on him. actually, shes cute all the time-

he takes a deep breath and tries to think of something else. but she’s there next to him. and really its her fault for falling asleep on him, so she cant be mad at him in the morning. he leans his head on hers, and he can smell the shampoo in her hair. it smells nice. 

by the morning shes cuddled up in his arms. its not either of their fault, its just how they ended up sleeping. (maybe a little bit leons fault, but shh). when sonia wakes up, the first thing she sleepily notes is how warm and nice it feels. then she realizes whats actually happening. she jolts a little, enough to half-wake him up, and frantically apologizes (she assumed she fell asleep on him because it was the last thing she remembered). the drowsy leon just mumbles out an “It’s okay..” and pulls her back down, and close to him again. hes not ready to wake up yet. and now its her turn to freeze. 

when they both actually get up they kind of laugh nervously about it and equally apologize. he thanks her for letting her stay there and she hastily blurts out a “Y-Yeah-! Anytime you want-!!” and then stammers away trying to rephrase it. theyre both red in the face. 

yamper and charizard kind of give each other the look(tm). leon gives her a ride to motostoke, and he has to go to a meeting with the chairman that day. she waves him off. but neither of them really ever stop thinking about it.

Can I say it seriously annoys me how Captain just takes everything thats interesting about Three Houses, like the parts where it actually deviates from your typical jrpg plot, and degrades it into something predictable and tropey? Like its INTERESTING Edelgard still doesnt trust her allies at the end of CF but nope, Captain has to make her and the BESF into the boring overused found family trope. Its INTERESTING that a church in a jrpg isnt pure evil - woops, never mind, religion bad 1

so back to the religion of evil slash evil church tropes that exist in like nintey-nine percent of jrpgs we go. Its like Captain is rewriting the game based on what he expected or wanted to happen but didnt. 2

For real! Like, I'm not gonna sit here and say that I don't love me my found family dynamic, but that is just not what the Black Eagles have with each other, especially on CF. Playing as the villainous people who are unaware of their villainy is a really cool idea (if executed kinda whack), but Cap'n is determined to water it down to a sing-song friendship is magic quest of happiness and sunshine as EdeIgard enacts war on a continent. The Church being a genuinely morally gray institute and not just "lol what if the religion was SeCrEtLy EvIl" snooze-fest is interesting, but Cap'n is hard-set on making it an objectively evil thing with no nuance at all whatsoever. It takes away everything that makes CF such a neat concept.

And bro, "Its like Captain is rewriting the game based an what he expected or wanted to happen but didnt" I'll take a bold stance and say that that is exactly what he is doing. I'm sorry, almost nothing in this fic suggests that Cap'n cares much at all about what actually happens in the game - the characters are laughably OOC, the lore is misrepresented if not flat out incorrectly represented, and the story deviates from the one in canon (and not just in "Kronya lives" ways either, I mean "EdeIgard tells people about her coronation even when she literally doesn't want people to know about that in canon" kind of ways) often.

Like, a CF parley scene does not happen and would not happen in canon. The Kingdom does not strike the Empire first at any point in CF. Claude is trying to put up a united front in an attempt to ward off EdeIgard. And out of the timeskip, EdeIgard willingly hands of the Death Knight to TWS. EdeIgard never promises to not use Demonic Beasts anymore and would not promise such a thing. EdeIgard is never scared of Rhea, Dimitri, or Thales. Dimitri is not obsessed with EdeIgard until after the Flame Emperor reveal. Rhea and Dimitri are not angry people until their trauma buttons are mashed by EdeIgard. EdeIgard would not see Marianne as a strong person, and Marianne does not become stronger on CF. No one considered Lonato's rebellion a commoner's rebellion. No one likens Lonato to Loog in the game.

None of that shit happens! That's all made-up by Cap'n! But he and Edelstans will swear up and down that this is either what happened or is otherwise true to EdeIgard and everyone else's characters. Cap'n wants this to be what had happened, which would normally be literally nothing! As someone who wrote a long as fuck rewrite of an entire route, I think maybe, perhaps I can understand that feeling! That's like, a major reason people write fanfiction in the first place! But he and an alarming amount of others are unironically saying that this is meta of the game when he's LITERALLY MAKING SHIT UP. He's using shit THAT'S NOT CANON as part of his "analysis" (using content that was literally cut from the game to make a point about anything is... not something I would suggest, to put it nicely). It's just nuts

when will people realize we’re not mad about people disliking ctommy (ofc no one likes it when people hate on your fave but thats just a normal feeling & not like. Actual Objective Criticism) we’re mad about it being implied that ctommy is somehow worse than cdream. like !!!! sure, you can hate ctommy all you want but how the fuck in any context are you gonna claim the abuse victim is, morally speaking, worse than their abuser. like yes they’re a complex three dimensional person who is not just innocent & faultless or defined by their victimhood, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they did not fucking abuse someone to the point of almost suicide. and sure morality rankings are kinda pointless, but idk it still feels fucked up to say that. just say you dislike ctommy and go, you dont have to imply that him being annoying is worse than cdream abusing & killing him - cause as long as its good ol’ rude, aggressive, annoying ctommy then who gives a shit right? 

yeah, c!bbh has no idea what happened in exile, so he doesn’t have that context and theres no way he knows the implications of what he’s saying. ill give him that. but i would hope cc!bbh does ?????????? like yknow. One of the Most Important arcs in the dsmp history i would argue. but he could also be perfectly aware and just playing a long arc (god i hope he is- otherwise the communication issues are somehow worse than we thought💀💀). in which case i would genuinely like to see where he’s going with it, and how he’s gonna portray cbbh learning the truth and figuring out how to compromise between his dislike of ctommy & also recognizing that what happened to him was worse than anything he’s done in the past. like im not asking for them to become best buddies just for cbbh to admit, even just to himself, that no matter how much he may dislike ctommy, maybe cdream is Not the most morally upstanding one of the two psfgjsdhfgkj

and yea obviously i feel like the “new character dislikes ctommy” trope is in fact not something c!inniters are in any way discovering, or that people are being shocked & butthurt over the idea that people may not like their fave, but in fact a very old overused trope we’re all tired of. but ill get in trouble for saying that  🤡🤡

I'm reading The Day of the Duchess right now, and i think what makes it so good is how complex the emotions of the two characters are shown to be.

I think another aversion to the cheater trope is a tendecy to lean on "its not what it looks like" idea with misunderstandings and lack of communication. Which feels cheap and frustrating for the reader when its done to excess.

Sarah MacLean has really steered clear of that at every turn. The couple have much deeper hurts and fears that theyre struggling to speak about, and anger that needs to be dealt with too. It all feels very real and well developed.

I was mildly worried it would overuse the "im an aristocratic man, women only want me for my title, woah is me" line (which i kinda felt A Rogue Not Taken did), but thats discarded pretty quickly as well, at least so far (im about 10 chapters in)

You're welcome! I agree 100%. The great thing about Haven and Sera is that they're just so wounded. By each other, by life, by their backgrounds. And it's not just a wound that he caused her--he has his own reasons to feel hurt BY her. It's all very realistic to me, and that's why it's so satisfying to read about them coming back together.

I agree with the cheapness of the "it's not what it looks like". To me it should always be... exactly what it looks like. Have the cheater truly fuck up. Make it a real issue. Have them have to work to make up for it. Imo one very smart things Sarah MacLean does with that book is put distance and time between Sera and Haven after his infidelity. She's literally gone from his life for a good, long while. And to an extent, I think that the real *pain* in the relationship is more the loss of the baby than his infidelity, understandably. Of course his infidelity MATTERS and has to be addressed, but the fact that they had this late term loss is also very traumatic.

It's such a rich book. I have a bit of an issue with one thing there, but I get why MacLean does it, and overall I'd recommend it any day.
