I got a message about the kerela story on my main blog today. I answered it there, but I wanted to detail my responses here.

a lot of the apologia for this film stems from the idea that it is criticizing terrorists like ISIS, not the religion of islam. and normally, i can get behind something like that. it's perfectly okay to criticize the abuses that people perpetrate in the name of religion, which is why it drives me nuts that people do not raise their voices in protest against hindutva and casteism. we all will benefit from their eradication.

the problem that films like kerela story, kashmir files, and this whole subgenre of revisionist history surrounding muslim-hindu conflicts is that it equates the religion of islam with the actions of these terrorists and it weaponizes isolated horror cases into dismantling interfaith relationships. this isn't 'telling a story'; it's propaganda designed to demonize muslims.

we can absolutely talk about how hindus are oppressed in other parts of the world; we can sympathize with the horrible things that happened to these women of all faiths. however, this film exploits the trauma of these women, and weaponizes it as propaganda that all muslims are bad.

the history between our peoples is long, bloody and filled with horror for both sides. however, our history does not give us the right to inflict evil upon innocent people who did not commit the atrocities of their ancestors. we need to end islamophobia in the hindu community, and i know that it's not something that a tumblr post can solve, but we can start by criticizing and boycotting films like these.

The Ryoko Kui interview's reception is such a disaster over a pretty normal (yet still flawed) interview between a non-Japanese fan and Japanese artistic. This is discourse for discourse's sake, and it's no surprise that almost every Twitter user I've looked at who's using this interview to parade Kui around as a goated mangaka standing strong against Western ideology is anti-trans.

Like, I do think the interview was kinda wonky with its focus on fandom culture, which Kui clearly didn't have much interest in. But sometimes that happens. Sometimes interactions between two people, especially a fan and a creator, two people who view and interact with a piece of media in completely opposite perspectives, don't click. Does this really need to get blown up into a "West vs. East culture war" issue.

Anyways, Kui saying "I don't consider my audience's interpretations when writing. I leave it to their imaginations, but I have my own read on things too" is the healthiest, most normal thing an artist/writer who wants a non-parasocial audience could say. Artists and writers use this line all the time. If Kui didn't enjoy autistic Laius or Farcille headcanons, she would have probably voiced/signalled her discomfort, like she did on the topic of Senshi fanservice. Overall, Kui handled the interview really well. Props to her to sticking to her guns and keeping a healthy disconnect from the fandom. While I think the interviewer could've/should've been more tactful and restrained, the flaws in their questions is not a symptom of the woke mind virus trying to wriggle its way into the pure Japanese psyche. It's the sign of an over-eager fan who sees a piece of fiction differently than its creator.

Hey Critters!

So, you may recognize these doodles, as I've been live doodling since the first campaign, and doing what side games and one-shots I'm able to do ^_^ I really love doing the doodles, and I hope ya'll are enjoying them too!

I'm reaching out b/c Work is getting tricky as my wife was fired from her job (along with her coworkers last year) b/c her boss got greedy (the union is currently suing him, but we're not looking to get much recompense even if we win probably), and her covid really disabled her so she's not likely to be able to get much new work. Additionally, our kiddo needs a lot of one-on-one support, so her being a stay at home mom is really something he needs at least in these first years of his life. So I'll be the sole earner for the foreseeable future, and I bet you can imagine how tough living off of comics and freelance is lol XD (for a family of 3 humans, 4 rescue cats +1 outside we're caring for best we can, and a number of hefty bills to pay ^_^;;)

So, if you enjoy my doodles (and perhaps even my other work) and want to throw some support my way, a couple bucks a month goes farther than you'd think! Or if that's not an option, shopping in my stores is great too, or even the free option of boosting my work whenever you see it, tell your friends about my comics (word of mouth is LITERALLY what works through this social media algo garbage that's hitting), etc and so on!

bruh i need to vent about a rude comment i got on my recent chap and also about clora, cuz its something thats been on my mind for a while now. it has spoilers to my most recent chap tho so im putting it below

so in my most recent chap clora gets hit by the killing curse but thanks to seb sacrificing himself for her, it doesn’t work/she survives. and I got a rly rude comment about how that’s super cringe and that clora is a "shoe horning of every possible manifestation of Mary-Sueism I have ever seen." theyre dropping my fic after almost 500k words bc apparently THAT’S where they draw the line and that "just somehow pulling it out the bag and surviving a killing curse from the power of love. In simpler terms, it’s absolutely cringe worthy" and "forgive me if I rolled an eye at the yet again invincible nature of Clora Clemons-the-one-eighth-Veela-extraordinaire"

BUT LIKE LMAO TELL ME U DIDN’T READ/WATCH HARRY POTTER WITHOUT TELLING ME. that’s literally what happens to harry??but its only cringe when it happens to our "mary-sue" clora? like yeah sure love magic might be a bit cringe but IM LITERALLY JUST PULLING FROM THE SOURCE MATERIAL. of all the things to take issue with in my fic and interpretations, theyre taking issue with something that’s canon BAHAHA.

and since im on the topic of clora being mary sue can I just say I hate the misogyny/internalized misogyny that i've seen some people (NOT A LOT, THANKFULLY) treat her with. like i get it, im not pale and blonde and as conventionally pretty as clora is, but even if I was, is that a reason to hate me?? and does being beautiful and well-liked = mary sue? bc as far as I know, mary sue is a chara who is just naturally amazing at everything and doesnt need to try hard and theyre just inexplicably great for no reason (like mc in the base game BAHHAA) if anything the mary sue in MY fic is seb LMAO (but hes a boy so its ok). like clora has worked hard and studied magic all her life due to being a squib and wanting to make up for not being able to DO it. she isnt good at flying, seb is still better at her than duelling, shes really short sighted when it comes to doing/thinking whats best for others and can be a huge idiot.... and like. the only guys that have even shown interest in clora on a real scale have been seb and leander (and then lawley for blackmail purposes, and also bc he hates seb) so its not like literally everyone is falling over themselves for her?? like her interactions with the main cast of boys (ominis, garreth, amit) theyre all indifferent to her LMAO but still, the fact that shes pretty and guys here and there might look at her and go o shes cute! doesnt make her a mary sue SORRy thats just called being attractive idk its just annoying that ppl automatically see a nice kind beautiful female character without any VISIBLE flaws and go SHES TOO PERFECT!! MARY SUE!! And it never occurred to anybody that the weaponization of their white privilege and role as Victims in the patriarchy should mean that they no longer have a right to talk about misogyny. Right?

By that I mean there wasn't a campaign of Black and brown women commenting, "White women can't talk about misogyny until they stop being racist. Besides what they have to say about their experience as women is no different from my experience. And if anything it's less valuable than what I have to say anyway cuz their views on gender are inherently racist. Listening to white women is a waste of time when you could listen to Black and brown women."

Literally nobody did this, right?

So how are y'all using the same exact logic to say that transmen can't talk about transandrophobia? "Their experiences are different from ours but they shouldn't talk about them cuz we're the ones doing the worthwhile work of dismantling transphobia with our more valuable experiences as the Hated Gender."

Because respectfully if that's the logic we as a queer community are gonna start using then that logic eventually says that the Only people with a right to speak on Anything in Any community Ever... are Black women.

Now ask yourself why this campaign against WW doesn't exist. Ask yourself why you stopped at telling transmen to shut up, but didn't follow that logic all the way to it's conclusion.

Now ask yourself if that changes your right to speak on your own experiences with people like you when you ALL could be speaking out of ignorance. What changes? Why or why not?

How do you feel right now?

Do you feel closer to your community? Do you feel spoken for or heard? Do you feel like your experiences matter to the people who it should matter the most to when I say your experiences are less relevant to our movement than someone else's?

I think the thing that gets me is that a world that encourages varied and non-conventional gender expression would be good actually! masculine and feminine are the categories/a binary that should be broken down, actually! but for some reason we've just decided to take a trans-humanist and consumerist knife to the idea and carved it into "biological sex should be broken down into oblivion and we should rearrange our sex characteristics with expensive and involved surgeries with money and the whims of polarizing and opportunistic politicians" instead ??

man I just like wearing men's clothes and generally think we shouldn't police people's gendered self-expression... I do not understand why it's suddenly required for anyone against gender roles to uncritically adopt the encouragement of surgically altering yourself to fit those gender roles :(

So much can happen, so much stuff I want to happen too but ofc some things are long shots - anyone who looks at my feed can tell what I want to happen let's be honest, and there'll be dress up and whatever beyond extra entrance Sam has planned to make his anticipated and grandiose return.

The most frustrating thing about being a Helluva Boss enjoyer is explicitly stating multiple times that I like show and then get called an anti and homophobic and media illiterate when I complain about the direction it has taken.

I LIKE the comedy

I LIKE the animation and artstyle

I LIKE the more serious plotlines like the government agents plot and the Cherubs plot

I LIKE the themes of friendship and found family

I even like most of the songs!

And ofc the voice cast slays every time

But just because your show has angst and tears and drama and sad music doesn't automatically make it "good".

Just because your characters are queer doesn't automatically make them good or well written characters

This fandom is so frustrating to deal with when you want to express your more nuanced takes of it

This is probably gonna be the last post I make about this subject and about Helluva Boss in general, this shit is too stupid to deal with

i love when people say you can't examine the jedi order's flaws or discuss them or ever portray them as bad because that would be misrepresenting buddhism and would be bad because thats a minority religion (in the west) as if real life buddism isnt as flawed as every single other religion in existence. people also forget two other important things: first that theres another religion that starts with a c the jedi are also partially based off of and secondly the reason the jedi has buddist influences in their worldbuilding is because of this pesky thing called orientalism that star wars happens to be full of to the brim. also the idea that examining the jedi critically 1:1 equals slandering its influences is such a example of the inability to distinguish fiction and in universe things from actual reality

youre defending a half assed orientalist idea of actual religion in its poorly executed fictional amalgamative form...why?
