the entirety of rogue one exists for that last shot of the movie. they fought so hard. they're holding each other on the beach. they chose to be here. they are choosing to love each other in this moment. they're watching the world get destroyed and it looks like a sunrise.

ok rewatching search for spock so rant time. it makes ZERO (0) sense. for spock to undergo pon farr on genesis.
a) just because he is rapidly ageing doesn't mean it corresponds to actual years, like if that was the case we should have seen him going pon farr crazy MULTIPLE times because according to this film he will undergo it once every 7 years. yet this doesnt happen??? be consistent.
b) they make it happen when spock is a teenager. he is half human its literally discussed how it has made his pon farr erratic and unpredictable and he didnt experience his first until it was like 37 or something (i dont know the exact age). but no they imply that saavik fucks a CHILD. like thank fuck they deleted the shit with her being pregnant because its gross on multiple levels. 1. thats a child 2. spock was literally her teacher. if they have any relationship its mentor/mentee. at most he is a farther. 3. spock is literally an empty vessel because he doesn't have his katra. so like ????? its completely fucked.
c) the entire scene just feels like a fucking reduction of saavik's character. its makes me so fucking irate. and the fact they wanted her to be preggers and then those two fucking goblins wrote that book where shes married to spock its fucking vile. and insane age gap. AND HE WAS HER FUCKING TEACHERRRRRRRRR STOP MAKING HIM DO ABUSE OF POWER SHIT ITS DISGUSTINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.
d) i also refuse to believe they actually had sexual intercorse and saavik just made the brainless(?) spock go crazy with finger kisses and that sated the mating drive because his katra isnt there.

My villain origin story is that they're taking Star Trek Beyond off Canadian Netflix today (March 25, 2025) and so I'm watching it one last time and in the middle of McCoy shouting "DAMMIT SPOCK" and rushing to cradle a collapsing Spock's head they CUT TO COMMERCIAL significantly before the shot ended

There’s a surprise at the end but don’t skip ahead 😉
─── ⋆⋅ ☾⋅⋆ ───
"Are you ready for tomorrow?" Sam's voice causes you to jump slightly.
You look over at the balcony next to yours, "Are you?" You smile, turning to face him as you lean against the metal banister.
He leans forward onto his elbows, "I mean, I'm nervous. I can't lie about that."
You nod, "Yeah, about a hundred people are going to watch us-" you put air quotes, "-have sex, with us in the room."
Sam laughs, "Yeah, talk about awkward."
"I agree, but two people denying the love that's obviously there, and finally when they give in.. I think we made a good movie.. all around." You walk over, looking down over the edge, "It's literally midnight and there's photographers?"
Sam looks over, shaking his head as he laughs, "Of course. They're waiting to see if we try and sneak out together."
"Mhm." You sigh, "Well, I'm going to try and get some sleep. Makeup team will be here early."
"Night." Sam says, watching you go into your room. A few seconds later you hear his door shut and you let out a sigh.
The tension was obviously there, but neither one of you wanted to make a move.
You crawl into bed, setting an alarm on your phone before lying down. You toss and turn a few times until you get comfortable enough to drift off to sleep.
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
The sound of your alarm blaring, causes a groan to leave your lips. You reach over, searching desperately for your lock button before you sit up.
Your hands move to your face, rubbing your eyes as you try and wake yourself up.
You looked around your quiet and dim hotel room, waiting for the spark to get you to finally get up. You swing your legs over the edge, pushing yourself to stand up.
You walk over to the shower, turning on the water and you wait a few minutes for it to warm up before stripping down and getting in.
It was obvious you grew feelings for your friend and co-star.
That's what made the movie so good, at least, to you it did.
But, Sam felt the same.
As you get out of the shower, there's a knock on your door, "Coming!" You yell out as you wrap a towel around your body.
You walk to the door and Chelsea with her hair and makeup crew are standing there, "Hey, Chels. Come in."
She smiles, flipping on the light switch as she walks in, "So I was thinking of a loose, beach wave curl? Maybe pinning it to the side?"
You nod, "That's fine with me. Whatever you think is best." You laugh and walk over to the chair.
"Oh honey. Were you up all night thinking about that boy again?" Chelsea asks and you whip your head around, "Shush!" You laugh pointing, "His room is next to mine."
"Oh, oh! Sorry." She smirks and shakes her head, "Well fix you right up, honey. Don't you worry."
"I never do." You smile and close your eyes as she starts to blow dry your hair.
Two hours later, she spins you around and you look like a whole new person, "amazing as always."
She smiles and walks over, unzipping the dress bag, "Now did the final touch." She pulls the dress and the hanger out and holds it up, "What do you think?"
"If this is just for the press conference, I'm actually really excited to see my dress for the premiere tonight." You walk over, fingers running over the black fabric of the simple, yet elegant cut out blazer dress.
"Oh yeah, we like to keep things a little bit more casual for the conferences, but for the premiere." She smiles, "You're going to look even more incredible."
"That's what I mean." You shake your head, taking the dress, "I'll be right back."
You go and get changed, looking at yourself in the mirror before you walk back out. The team's jaws drop.
"That looks beautiful on you." Chelsea says, "we do such great work." She laughs slightly, "You're definitely going to have his attention."
She winks and you smirk, leaning in to whisper, "I think I already do."
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
"Five minutes! Car is leaving in five minutes!"
There's a knock on your door and you stand up from your chair, smoothing out your dress. You grab your bag, making sure you have everything before walking over to your door.
As you open it and step out, Sam does the same thing.
You turn, facing each other.
A smile grows on your lips as you see him smirk, "Ready?" He extends his arm out and you walk over to him, "As I'll ever be." You laugh, sliding your hand around his arm.
You make your way to the elevator and step on.
The doors close and you just can't take your eyes off of Sam's reflection. You can't get over how good he looks in his outfit - the knit, copper colored short sleeve turtleneck, with the white pants and black boots.
The round, metal, clear frame glasses just complete the look in the best way possible.
"You look beautiful." Sam turns his head, looking down at you. You look away from the elevator doors and up at him, "Oh thank you. You too, uh, I mean. Handsome. You look very handsome, Sam."
He smirks, looking down as the doors open. Both Your's and Sam's security greet you as you walk off.
You walk to the front doors, making your way outside where a bunch of fans and photographers have been waiting hours for you to make your appearance.
"Y/n! Sam!"
"Can you answer some questions!"
"are you off to the conference? Y/n! Y/n!"
"Sam! Are you two dating? Sam, y/n!"
Multiple questions hit you all at once, all you can do is smile and wave as you walk to the car. Sam lets you get in first before getting in next to you.
"That's always crazy." Sam sighs, laughing as he leans forward to watch the crowd walk towards the car as you drive away.
"Yeah, it's always like that." You laugh shaking your head, "Did you hear the one question?"
He shakes his head, looking at you.
You smile, shaking your head, "They asked if we were dating. That's absolutely.. crazy."
"Yeah." Sam laughs slightly, "So crazy."
You chew on the inside of your lip, looking out the window, "So what questions do you think they're going to ask?"
"Definitely about that one particular scene." Sam glances over at you, smirking as he looks away, "It'll probably be the first question of them all."
"Yeah, that's not surprising." You laugh, "I'm actually more nervous than I was up in the hotel room."
Sam lays his hand on yours, "If you get nervous, just look at me." He smiles as you look at him, "I'll be right there."
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
You arrive at the venue, Sam stepping out first. He turns around, holding his out to help you out.
You slide your hand in his, the crowd growing louder as you walk with Sam down the carpet towards the stage.
You smile, waving to the fans that showed up.
Stopping for pictures for the photographers, both single shots and shots of you and Sam together.
Your arm is around his waist as his arm crosses over hours to hold you hip tight. He leans in, his voice quiet, "You're doing great."
You smile, looking up at him and the photographers eat it up, "Just like that!"
"Stay like that!
"Perfect chemistry!"
You laugh slightly as you hold your smile, although it wasn't a fake smile.
It was a genuine, real smile because of who was looking back at you.
Sam makes you feel safe and comfortable no matter where you are.
"Alright." The director of the conference walks up to you, "Take your seats. Sam you're in the last seat on the left, y/n." She looks at you, "Right next to him."
You nod, giving her a smile as you make your way to the stage with Sam.
You sit down, giving him a small smile as you see everyone flock to their seats.
Your handed a microphone, along with Sam and everyone else on the stage.
"Alright, everyone." The director, Wendell, walks out into the stage, the crowd clapping as a welcome to him, "Are we ready to begin?"
You fix your posture, sitting up straighter. You wipe your palms on the skirt of your dress and take a deep breath.
"First off, I'd like to introduce the leading people of this movie, Samuel Golbach and Y/N Y/L/N."
You and Sam stand up, waving to the crown and smiling before sitting back down as Wendell introduces the other people on the stage.
"Alright, so without further a do, have at them." He motions to you and Sam, but then brings the mic back to his lips, "But be gentle, I need them at the premiere tonight."
He chuckles and walks to his seat.
All at once, everyone in the crowd raises their hands and Wendell points to a lady in the front, "Go head, miss, pink blouse."
The woman stands up, "Sam, y/n. I know that you two were friends well before booking these roles." She pauses and you and Sam nod, "Did filming the sex scene in this movie affect how you look at each other, or affect your relationship in general?"
"Ooh." Sam sighs with a smile as he looks over at you, "Diving right into it, I see." He chuckles and shakes his head as he looks back to the lady, "Not at all, for me at least. I don't know about her."
He nods to you, laughing as he looks over at you.
You bring the mic up, looking out onto the crowd, "I think Sam and I are pretty much bulletproof, you know? We've been friends for years, ever since my fourth birthday party when I had to invite the whole class."
You laugh, looking over at a smiling Sam, "Nothing really weirds us out. Sam's seen the worst of me and he still calls me his friend so, no. I think we're good, maybe even closer now?"
"Thank you." The lady sits down and a man raises his hand, standing up when Wendell points to him, "I think I'm asking for everyone when I ask, are you guys an official thing? Couple?"
You glance over at Sam and he takes the lead, "Nope. Just friends as of right now."
"As of right now?" The man asks, "Does that mean there's a potential things might happen?"
You laugh slightly, "I think we're just kind of doing our own thing right now, focusing on the PR for this movie, just going with the flow."
"I fully one hundred percent agree." Sam nods, smiling at you before looking back to the crowd.
"Alright, thank you." The guy nods and sits down.
Another man stands up, "How were your feelings when you found out that you two got casted together, with being friends before?"
"I was actually really exited. Y/n is amazing at what she does, I honestly couldn't have picked anyone better for this role. She absolutely smashed it and I knew she was going to." Sam smiles, looking at you.
You smile holding your hand up to block his face, "Don't look at, putting too much pressure on me now." You laugh, dropping your hand, "Um, yeah. I was actually really excited, too. With knowing Sam for a long as I have, it almost felt natural."
"Almost like.. you guys were really together?" The reporter smirks and you laugh slightly, "I mean, in a way, yeah. It more or less felt like our character were really together the whole time, if that makes sense?"
The reporter nods, "Thank you."
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
After some time, the questions went to normal questions about the movie and you answered them with more ease than the first couple.
"Alright. So I'm sure we'll be seeing you all at the premier, so until then, let's give these talented people some love." Wendell motions to you all on the stage before he starts to clap.
You all stand up, waving and giving the people praise for being here.
Wendell walks up to you and Sam, "You guys have some time before you need to be at the premier, so just take some time, take a nap, whatever it is you need to do."
"Okay. Sounds good, what time again?" You ask and he looks at you, "Be there by four thirty. Premier is at six, but that'll give you guys time to greet fans and such." He sighs, "You guys are seriously making headlines. I'm so proud of you both."
You smile up at Sam and Sam nods, "Thank you, sir."
Wendell pats his shoulder, "Now go. Take a break."
Sam leads you to the car. The driver opens the door and you get in followed by Sam. Sam gives a wave, smiling before the door is shut, "I'm starving."
You groan, "Oh my gosh. Me too." You look over at him and he looks at you, both saying the same thing, "Pizza?"
You both laugh and nod, again in unison, "Yes!"
You sigh, "Works for me." You lean forward, "Can we stop at that pizza place that's up here on the corner?"
"Of course, miss y/l/n."
You rest your head back, "I'm so excited for this after party tonight."
"Why so you can get drunk?" Sam smirks and you nod, "Well, yeah. How else do you celebrate the release of a new movie?"
"No, you're right." Sam chuckles, "So you don't think our relationship is any different?"
Your mind starts racing, what does he mean by that? Different? As in, I want to be with you, different? I want to have sex with you for real, different?
"No." You shake your head, looking over at him, "Why would it be?"
He shrugs, "I mean-"
The driver cuts off Sam, "We've arrived."
You stare at Sam for a few seconds, seeing if he'll continue, but he doesn't. He just changes the subject, "So just cheese or pepperoni?"
"Um, pepperoni of course." You smile and he rolls his eyes, "Should have known." He winks and gets out, walking around to open your door.
You get out, walking into the building with him.
As you eat your lunch, you just converse back and forth about how you think the premier will go. How blind you'll be afterwards from all the camera flashes.
"I think tonight will go good." You nod, wiping the corner of your mouth with the napkin.
"How so?" Sam asks as he finishes his piece of pizza.
"Because you always make everything better." You smile, "You know how nervous I get and you just.." you wave your hand down once in front of your face, "take it all away."
"When you know someone for long enough, it's easy." He smiles, "You do the same, I was so anxious about answering questions and each time I looked at you I knew exactly what I wanted to say."
You smile, looking down, "So sweet."
He sighs, "I think.. the after party is going to be so much fun."
You nod, "We're always fun when we're drunk."
"If I start wall twerking.. take me home." Sam points to you and you nod, "Got it, boss."
He laughs, resting his cheek in the palm of his hand as he looks at you. You smile, your cheeks turning slightly red, "What?"
He shakes his head, "Nothing."
You smile, standing up, "Come on. We have about three and a half hours to get ready." Sam groans, "Fine, fine."
You make your way back to the hotel, having small talk about your favorite parts of the movies. Basically, rehearsing what you're going to say to the potential questions of the night.
Sam walks you to your door and as he's looking down at you, the tension of sharing a real kiss burning between the two of you, the elevator door opens and our comes Chelsea and her team.
"I'll see you in a few." Sam smiles, "have fun."
You laugh slightly, nodding, "Your team will be up soon, too."
He sighs, "Oh yeah. Don't remind me." He steps back to his door as Chelsea walks up, "Alright. We have only a short amount of time."
"We have three hours?" You laugh and Chelsea looks at you with a serious look, "Like I said, short amount of time. Now scoot."
She cracks a smile and you roll your eyes, laughing as you unlock your door.
"So." She says as the door closes, "Things seem to be heating up between you and Mr. Co-star."
You sit down in the chair, "Mm. I think they've been hot.. we just haven't really had time to think about them until now, you know?"
She nods, brushing your hair, "Exactly."
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
"Okay, now.. turn." She steps back and you turn, mouth falling open as you look at yourself in the mirror.
Hair and makeup perfect.
But the backless, v neck, deep rust orange colored dress that fits your body perfectly takes your breath away.
The way it sparkles in the light is just beautiful.
"Oh I love this." You twist to look at the back, "I love this."
Chelsea laughs, "You said that, twice."
"And I'm going to keep saying it." You laugh, "What time is it?"
She smiles as she checks her watch. Her smile fades, "Shit, time for you to go!" She hands you your bag with everything already in it, "Have fun tonight." She winks and walks over to open the door, "Let me know how it goes."
You smile as you walk out, "I will. Don't you worry."
You turn, stopping in your tracks when you see Sam standing there with his mouth slightly open.
"Sam?" You laugh, "You okay? We gotta go."
"They can wait, I just want to look at you for a second." Sam walks over, taking your hand in his so he can spin you around, "This is probably my favorite dress I've seen you in."
Your cheeks grow a darker shade of the pink that's already dashed on them, "Sam." You brush hair from your face and look up at him as he walks in front of you, "You are gorgeous."
His eyes are on yours and you smile, "Thank you."
Chelsea opens the door and Sam rolls his eyes slightly as he looks away.
"What are you still doing here!? Go! Go go!" She shoos you away and Sam sighs as he pulls you with him, "She has the most.. impeccable timing."
You laugh slightly, knowing he's being sarcastic, "Yeah. Tell me about it."
Sam was wearing a black, long sleeve, knit turtle neck and it was tucked into his brown and black, simple plaid dress pants. Same glasses from this morning and black dress shoes.
You step into the elevator, waving to Chelsea as her head is still outside of the door watching you, "Bye!"
She waves, smiling as she shakes her head. The doors close and before you say anything, Sam turns you to him, pointer finger resting gently under your chin as he presses his lips to yours.
Your eyes close as you finally get that first kiss that's been burning to happen.
He leans back, opening his eyes the same time you do and you both smile.
"Sorry I just.. had to do that before anything else interrupted us." He laughs slightly, "I've been thinking about doing it all fucking day."
You shake your head, "Don't ever say sorry for doing that." You pull him back in, your lips going onto his again.
You step back, sliding your hand into arm. You look up at him, bringing your thumb up to wipe away the lipstick that slightly transferred onto his lips.
He smirks and you smile as the doors open. Security greets you, "Ready?"
You and Sam nod, "As ever."
They lead you to the car, smiling and waving to the fans and all before you get in. Sam helps you with your dress and gets in.
The door shuts and you look over at him, "So."
He smirks, moving to lay a hand on your knee that's poking out of the one slit in your dress, "So.."
Your eyes move from his lips to his eyes and you both lean in. Your hands messing up his hair as your fingers comb through it.
His hand slipping under the fabric of your dress to pull you closer by your thigh.
You've been wanting this.
Needing this.
But it wasn't just you.
Sam has been dying to get his hands on you - off camera.
He kisses down your neck, fighting back the urge to leave a mark. He wanted the people to know that you were his, and as much as he wanted to, he didn't want to take away from the big night that surrounds the release of your movie.
"Sam.." you breathe out, "Were almost there."
"Mhm." He kisses back up to your lips, "I know." He presses a few kisses to your lips and leans back, holding your leg over his lap, "So does this mean you're mine now?"
He smirks and you smile, catching your breath, "Oh yeah." You lean in, fixing his hair before pecking his lips, "Wendell was right, we're definitely making headlines."
Sam chuckles fixing your dress, trying to get you to look as normal as you did before you entered the car.
The car comes to a stop and Sam winks at you, "Let's do this, baby."
The door opens, allowing the muffled screams to become loud. Sam steps out, repeating the process of helping you out.
He makes sure you're good before moving out of the way, allowing the public to see you for the first time.
The cameras flash. The people are screaming.
You felt on top of the world, especially with Sam by your side.
You walk up the carpet, Sam's arm around your waist, stopping on the marks for pictures. You'd walk ahead, getting single shots before turning around to wait for Sam.
His hand slips into yours and that causes everyone to become curious.
"Y/n!" The one reporter waves to you. You walk over, Sam still with you and she smiles, "You guys look phenomenal tonight!"
You smile, "Thank you."
Sam nods, "Thank you."
"So I see a little hand holding action, does this mean what I'm assuming everyone else thinks?" She raises a brow and Sam leans in, "I'll just say this." He laughs, "You guys can think what you want, we know what we are."
He winks and the reporter leans back, "Ohhh." She smirks, looking from Sam to you, "Girl. I'm jealous."
You laugh, looking over to see other photographers waiting, "oh, we gotta go."
"Gotta keep the line moving, right?" Sam shrugs with another laugh and you walk away, moving to the next mark.
As you're standing there getting your pictures taken, Sam's hand runs up your bare back, causing a shiver to go down your spine.
You turn your head, looking up at him and without hesitation, his finger is under your chin and his lips are on yours.
The crowd. Goes. Nuts.
Screaming. Crying. Flashes from the cameras. All at once.
You smile within the kiss and turn, "Thank you!" You wave and walk into the theater. Everyone who's sitting down stands up to greet you and Sam, with clapping and whistling.
You smile, waving to everyone in there before making your way to your seats.
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·
You were smiles the whole time.
"Let's give another round of applause for our leading couple!" Wendell claps and everyone rises to their feet around you and Sam.
Sam leans in, "I think it's a hit." He pecks your cheek, standing up to pull you to your feet. You look around, saying thank you for the people around you.
Everyone was cheering.
You really felt like you were on top of everything now.
"To everyone on the list for the after party.." Wendell says and points, "I'll see ya there." He claps and walks out.
You and Sam spend a few minutes making your way around to people, making small talk and getting praised.
"You guys were absolutely incredible." A woman says taking your hand into hers, "The tension was almost like it was happening in real life and you used that to your advantage. I loved it."
You smile, "We work very well together.." you glance over at Sam, who is smiling huge and taking pictures with a few people, "Don't we?"
She embraces you in a hug and congratulates you again before walking away. You walk over to Sam, snaking your arm around his waist, "Ready? I need to change before we head to the party."
"Chelsea isn't going to be there is she?" He huffs and you laugh, "No. I texted her to just leave my dress on the bed before she left this last time."
"Good. Because I want some time with my girl before we're flocked again." He kisses your head and you walk back out to where the cameras are flashing and people are still screaming.
You nod towards a group of people and he nods. You all over and the fans go wild.
"Hi!" You say as you walk up to them.
You and Sam sign a few things, take some pictures, chit chat for a quick second before making your way back to the car.
As soon as the door is shut, Sam's hands are pulling you to him.
You were basically in his lap.
His hands squeeze your waist as your lips move with his. He moves your hips, causing you to grind down on him.
A low groan escape his lips and you smirk, "Someone's rowdy."
He scoffs, "You have no idea." His lips move down your neck, biting gently as his hand slides up your bare back, pressing into your skin.
He lightly drags his nails down your back and you gasp quietly, exhaling as you tangle your fingers in his hair and tug.
"Do we need to go to the party?" He asks lowly and you smile, "I mean.. we have to make somewhat of an appearance, right?"
"Mmm." He groans, "I want you, so fucking bad."
You glance back, "Take us straight to Jewel's please."
The driver nods and you press the button that puts the partition up. You look back at Sam, "Now we got twenty minutes. Don't make a mess on my dress."
"Deal." He pulls you in, kissing you as your hands move down to undo his belt. His hands slide up your thighs, pushing the fabric of your dress away.
His fingers slip between your legs, rubbing your clit through your panties, "Wet already?"
You unzip his pants, "See for yourself."
You lift up slightly so he can push his pants down, freeing his cock. Your eyes move from his lap to his eyes as you shift forward.
He slides your panties to the side and you sink down onto his cock.
Your mouth falls open, pulling his hair as you feel him stretching you out. His hands grip your wait, pinning your dress up to keep it out of the way.
"Fuck." He breathes out, "Better than pretending. That's for sure." He smiles, bucking his hips up slightly.
You nod, "Oh, yeah. I agree." You whimper as you start to ride him, rising up and sinking back down. You roll your hips, moaning quietly as you rest your forehead against his
He slides a hand up your back, dragging his nails down your back. You tilt your head back, moaning out as his hand wraps around your hair, pulling it to keep it back.
Sam sucks a mark into your neck, moving down a little to suck another one.
You clench around his cock, panting as you feel yourself building up to that knot in your stomach snapping.
He wraps his other arm around your waist, moving to lay you down onto the seat. He picks up the thrusts, groaning into your neck.
"Feels so fucking good." He moans out quietly, "Fuck, baby."
You wrap your leg over his waist as your arms go around his neck, "Fuck, Sam, yes yes yes." You arch your back, head falling back as you fight back from moaning loudly.
"Let go for me, baby." Sam whispers and you look up at him, locking eyes for a second before leaning your head up to close the space between your lips.
You one hand moves to the side of his neck. He swallows your moans with ease as you grow closer and closer.
"Come on, baby. Times almost up." Sam mumbles against your lips, "I wanna get you off first."
That was enough. You throw your head back, moaning as you come undone around him. Pleasure taking over every single inch of your body as you cum.
Sam's quick to follow as his thrusts grow sloppy and slow down gradually.
You feel his cock twitch inside of you and you look up at him, taking a deep breath before kissing him.
"You're absolutely perfect in every. Single. Way." Sam smiles down at you and you can't help but shake your head, "I love you."
He bites his lip, a smile still on his face, "I love you."
There's a knock on the partition, "Pulling up now."
"Shit."
"Fuck."
You and Sam quickly scramble to get fixed, "I'll just go straight to the bathroom." You laugh, "Are you good?"
Sam nods, buckling his belt, "You have no idea." He laughs, brushing his hair with his fingers, "Are you?"
You nod, "Let's go celebrate."

Kinda wish Nevermoor could have been written 20 years ago so we could have a movie adaption in the early 2000s that’s not plot accurate but by god does it have the vibes down

When I first got into Star Wars at age 15/16 the prequels were like the funny meme films. I did realise Episode III is actually a good movie even back then, but I don't think I ever really could take it serious. As good and enjoyable as I thought that movie was, it was still one of the funny meme movies before anything else. I didn't really care about Anakin that much because well, Episode I and II being Like That.
Fast forward to me getting really into Clone Wars at 19/20. Binge watching Clone Wars and Rebels got me through the first months of the pandemic. Suddenly these characters mean something to me beyond being funny. Anakin Skywalker is suddenly one of my favorite Star Wars characters. How did this happen?
And now here I am, 25, just got home from seeing Revenge of the Sith in cinema for the first time ever. And I am a Mess. How did I never truly feel the tragedy of this movie until now? Probably helps I don't have "I don't like sand" Anakin anywhere in my recent memory. Today he was not the meme guy. He is a very young and tragic boy who I just want to hug and tell everything will be alright. Even tho it won't be.

Top five time travel movies/books! :D
See, the trouble is that while I love time travel as a concept, I haven't actually explored the genre that much. I haven't watched/read most of the time travel stories out there, sometimes because I just haven't gotten to it, other times because I'm very picky about content, other times because most of the time travel stories I run across are either "we're a bureaucratic agency dedicated to policing time travel" or "oh, no, what if we change history?" or "I fell in love with a hunky Highlander", none of which are the parts of time travel stories that interest me.
The most accurate version of this list would be a list of Doctor Who episodes (and maybe some Star Trek ones), but you specified movies and books, which is going to make this a much more difficult list to create.
The Day of the Doctor: Haha, I cheated, because Day of the Doctor was released in theaters, which makes it a movie! (So I can use it as a stand-in for all the Doctor Who episodes that are my favorite time travel stories). Thankfully, it's a fantastic time travel story and one of my favorites. It's a genius blend of both "stable timeline" and "changeable timeline" mechanics. Three different interweaving timelines. References to A Christmas Carol. Changing major events in the show's past without changing the timeline that resulted from them at all. A rejection once and for all of the "ends justify the means" mindset that had lingered over the reboot for too long. A masterpiece.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: It's the classic Christmas story for a reason--and one of those reasons is the time travel. Going with Scrooge across decades of his own life and watching him undergo character development from that is a great use of time travel. (And there happens to be a great Doctor Who version, too!)
Star Trek: First Contact: It's fun when you get characters traveling from the future to a different time that's also in the future. Love all the worldbuilding details of these characters interacting with their past/our fictional future, and it's a pretty good story.
Shadowhand by Anne Elisabeth Stengl: The Tales of Goldstone Wood series has a structure unlike any I've ever seen in fantasy, and this book is the reason. The first three books in the series are in chronological order. The next two books are prequels that take place like a thousand years earlier. This book, the sixth, involves characters from the later time period time-traveling to meet characters from the earlier time period, and getting swept up in a legend that they've known since childhood. I remember very little about the book beyond that, but it's such a cool concept (with an unforgettable ending moment) that I have to put it on the list.
Love Strikes Twice: It's one of the very rare Hallmark movies that's actually a decent movie by normal movie standards, so I have to give it credit. Instead of the usual boring time travel plot of "oh no, what if we change history?", we get someone who's trying to change history, who does change history, and it's a good thing. The time travel mechanics surrounding that make no sense, but who cares? It's a fun story with an engaging cast, legitimately funny jokes, a sweet romance, and a solid plot.

Waittttt why don’t you like the nosefertu movie 🥺🥺
I didn't, anon, no, sorry! I've been trying to be relatively discrete about it, because I know people on here really love it, and I don't actually like harshing anyone's buzz, but it wasn't even a case of it just not being for me, I actually didn't think it was very good.
My issues of it are kind of two-fold, one is with the writing, and the second is more specifically tied to the visual language of the film, and probably more about me really being a cinephile with a particular interest in gothic / gothic-adjacent cinema, haha. I'll put this under a cut in case people would like to scroll past, but also because there are quite a lot of screenshots in the second bit.
My main issue with the writing is that it was a) heavily, heavily expositional, and b) I don't think it had anything new to say about these characters, which is a huge issue when you're looking at the fourth adaptation of this specific story, which in turn is a part of more than 80 Dracula adaptations.
In terms of the exposition, that was frustrating alone with the world building and the period setting, but I'm overall pretty forgiving of that in films like this. What I had a really big issue with was that the script never let us in to any of these relationships. We were told what they were by the characters. There was no authentic intimacy in any of the dynamics, everything that we were supposed to feel about their relationships we were told to feel, not invited to feel.
Ellen and Anna's friendship for instance is positioned as one of the hearts of the film, but we get no context as to their friendship, we are offered no scenes of close intimacy beyond the one in bed later in the film, which feels like too little too late to me. The fact that their friendship is a point of friction in Anna's marriage with Friedrich is also dropped in randomly halfway through the film to spearhead middle act tension, but that doesn't really match the tone of the dynamics as we see them in the first half of the film where he seems to want to look after Ellen as much as Anna does.
I've actually found this with a lot of Eggers scripts - and for the record, I think he is a better director than he is a writer - where he is just fundamentally disinterested in the backgrounds and interpersonal dynamics of his characters. He likes relationships as far as they service the plot and the aesthetic that he's trying to achieve, and deepening them beyond that is just not something he does. It might work for some people, but it actually leaves me really cold as a viewer. I need to know more to feel more, I need to be shown the stakes, instead of told them, I don't get anything out of the film by it telling me that Ellen and Anna are friends, just like I don't get all that much out of it telling me that Ellen and Thomas are in love, which it does, repeatedly, without ever investing in why they are in love. I need to know that why to be emotionally invested, and I just don't think that's there.
Which kind of filters a bit back to this question of why Eggers wanted to remake this. There are excellent versions of it already that tell deeper stories of coming of age, sexually and emotionally, trauma, and female sacrifice, so what did he want to bring to it? More explicit sexuality? Modern effects? That's not enough for me. I think adaptations and remakes have to have something to say - Interview with the Vampire certainly does - and when they don't, they just feel hollow to me, which this film did.
And this goes to my second point too, because a lot of this film felt like it owed a lot visually to better films to me. Again, I do think Eggers is a good director - he manages tone really well, and I think his visual sensibility is compelling (although not as compelling as others, I have to say), but I also think his eye is so heavily influenced by others sometimes that he veers out of homage and into straight up lifting shots.
And I'll give him a pass on some of it, right? Him adapting shots from the 1922 and 1979 films are a part of being in conversation with them, y'know? I don't actually have a problem with him recreating those, and he recreates heaps. I won't repost all of them, but The Frida Cinema did a great compilation of them on Instagram here if you're interested. Here are a few though:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Interestingly, I actually think his versions are the least innovative in almost all cases too - I often find Eggers movies to be really flat visually - but I'm not going to get into that).
What I have more of an issue with is that I think that a lot of his shots are taken from other films too. Let me show you some examples.
Let's start with that beautiful curtain shot, and then let's have a look at one from the wonderful Jane Campion film, Bright Star (2009), and finally Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last one is a little different, of course, but I did want to include it because that is literally a Nosferatu-esque monstrous vampire coming through the curtain, and also I think Eggers took a lot of inspiration from that particular film.
Okay another one. Let's look at Ellen in her white night gown, running out the door, and then lets have a look at two other iconic gothic films - The Uninvited (1944) and Eyes without a Face (1960).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another one! Ellen ripping off her dress, then lets have a look at a shot from famed British arthouse filmmaker, Derek Jarman's The Last of England (1987)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one feels obvious, but of course the eyes rolling back screaming shot is obviously heavily reminiscent of The Exorcist (1973).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This shot of Ellen, with this shot from The Piano (1993) which I would've maybe talked myself out of if I didn't immediately Google and find out Eggers listed The Piano as one of his favourite films on the Nosferatu press tour (taste! Now THAT'S a movie!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is a promo shot because I couldn't find the still from the film itself, but again, Ellen with Orlock, and Valerie with the Monster in Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I mentioned, I do think he took quite a lot from Valerie and Her Week of Wonders generally which is a dreamy, gothic, erotic horror featuring vampires that was released as a part of the Czechoslovak New Wave in 1970. It's not super easy to capture in screenshots, but there are elements to the tone and the way that he structures the story that feel heavily influenced, and even involves sex with the unseen supernatural outside. These shots don't look that similar, but trust me, it's basically the same thing happening in both (and again, I think Jires' shot is a lot more compelling).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could honestly probably list a lot more, because I know while I was watching it, I recognised shots from The Innocents (1961) [a lot of the window shots felt very heavily tied to this one], My Cousin Rachel (1952), Night of the Hunter (1955), The Spiral Staircase (1946) and Viy (1960). That's not a criticism necessarily, but it goes back to my point that I just don't think Eggers had much to say in this particular film. He wanted an aesthetic and a vibe which he obviously saw and loved in other films, but without having anything to say, or a deeper understanding of these characters, I think it stifled his own creativity which let the film down on both a writing level and a visual level.
It was like watching a collage of a bunch of things he liked, and I get it, I mean, I like those things too, I think we have similar taste in movies, haha, but without a good script to drive this film forwards, or meaningful engagement of these characters - - like I said, it just left me really cold.

So I went to the wiki page for the henghill Bullet & Brain mission of 2.2 looking for some dialogue I had missed and
a) I found something incredibly tasty that slotted into some other thoughts I'd been having, more on that on another day, and
b) I saw this super fun little trivia at the bottom, which!
Tumblr media
I knew Penacony characters like Boothill took a lot of inspirations from old movies, but I didn't realize it was even in his and Dan Heng's relationship, that's so cool!!
It fits them very well, it's such a fun reference. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was an old buddy Western film (from 1969- nice) about a pair of outlaws. Butch Cassidy was the leader of a gang, and described as clever, affable, and talkative. Meanwhile, his closest companion, the Sundance Kid, was known as a man of few words.
Cassidy's original birth name was much more plain, but similar to Boothill, he took on a new moniker when he became an outlaw. "Cassidy" had been the last name of his beloved mentor, who taught him how to shoot and ride. And Sundance Kid was known as he was because Sundance was the name of his hometown, and it was the only place that had ever managed to catch and jail him, back when he'd been younger (also similar to Dan Heng, but ouch).
These two stick together like glue throughout the length of the film- through Cassidy's leadership of the gang being challenged, through a train robbery gone wrong, through being pursued by mercenaries, and even through fleeing to Bolivia and trying to start over together.
I don't want to say too much more, since the mission title is referencing one specific movie that I've never seen. I kinda wanna watch it now, though, just to see the inspiration that went into Boothill and Dan Heng and how they get along. I just think it's really sweet that these two were literally made to be the best of bros, how lovely is that. 💕
#honkai star rail#this can be ship or plantonic tbh yall are always free to tag my ramblings as you please haha#just! they're so sweet!!#FWENDS#i would love to see more of them being a dynamic duo further down the line ♡#i think the film moved things along a little quicker but the real life Cassidy and Sundance were actually in south america for a few years#they fled there to get away from pursuers along with Sundance's girlfriend Etta Place.#supposedly they managed to buy a small ranch and the three of them lived peacefully (and even lawfully!) together for like three years-#-until the law caught up with them again#at some point Etta Place returned to the US reportedly due to illness rather than not wanting to get caught like in the film#Sundance may or may not have escorted her back. but whether he did or not he returned to South America with Cassidy#the two of them eventually got into a huge firefight with authorities where Sundance was fatally shot and Cassidy chose to end his own life#that's the most common story anyway. some also say Cassidy snuck back into the US again where he lived quietly until his death.#but it reads kind of like rumors of Elvis Presley sightings to me BSMZKNSKS#the film ended much more happily with the two of them getting into shenanigans and a freeze frame of them in a hail of bullets haha#i wanna see Dan Heng and Boothill fight together too it would be so cool aaaaaa#they would be great at getting into shenanigans! as we've already seen!!#fun bonus info: Boothill's ult literally puts black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to look like a widescreen Western movie#fun bonus info 2: Cassidy was regarded with respect by some people bc he never stole from the poor he only robbed big companies#this is actually nicer than Boothill is in canon bc he openly admits he will rob someone blind if he doesn't like them BSKZKKZMSKDK#(although I feel like its implied he has more standards for this than he gives himself credit for.#like he makes it pretty clear he doesn't particularly like Argenti at first and thinks he's annoying as shit but I'm sure he didn't rob him#...would have been real fucking funny if he did though oh my god I would love to see him try that. it absolutely would not work BSKZKNSKSJS#hsr#henghill#bootheng#dan heng#boothill#hsr boothill#hsr dan heng
