Top five time travel movies/books! :D

See, the trouble is that while I love time travel as a concept, I haven't actually explored the genre that much. I haven't watched/read most of the time travel stories out there, sometimes because I just haven't gotten to it, other times because I'm very picky about content, other times because most of the time travel stories I run across are either "we're a bureaucratic agency dedicated to policing time travel" or "oh, no, what if we change history?" or "I fell in love with a hunky Highlander", none of which are the parts of time travel stories that interest me.

The most accurate version of this list would be a list of Doctor Who episodes (and maybe some Star Trek ones), but you specified movies and books, which is going to make this a much more difficult list to create.

The Day of the Doctor: Haha, I cheated, because Day of the Doctor was released in theaters, which makes it a movie! (So I can use it as a stand-in for all the Doctor Who episodes that are my favorite time travel stories). Thankfully, it's a fantastic time travel story and one of my favorites. It's a genius blend of both "stable timeline" and "changeable timeline" mechanics. Three different interweaving timelines. References to A Christmas Carol. Changing major events in the show's past without changing the timeline that resulted from them at all. A rejection once and for all of the "ends justify the means" mindset that had lingered over the reboot for too long. A masterpiece.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: It's the classic Christmas story for a reason--and one of those reasons is the time travel. Going with Scrooge across decades of his own life and watching him undergo character development from that is a great use of time travel. (And there happens to be a great Doctor Who version, too!)

Star Trek: First Contact: It's fun when you get characters traveling from the future to a different time that's also in the future. Love all the worldbuilding details of these characters interacting with their past/our fictional future, and it's a pretty good story.

Shadowhand by Anne Elisabeth Stengl: The Tales of Goldstone Wood series has a structure unlike any I've ever seen in fantasy, and this book is the reason. The first three books in the series are in chronological order. The next two books are prequels that take place like a thousand years earlier. This book, the sixth, involves characters from the later time period time-traveling to meet characters from the earlier time period, and getting swept up in a legend that they've known since childhood. I remember very little about the book beyond that, but it's such a cool concept (with an unforgettable ending moment) that I have to put it on the list.

Love Strikes Twice: It's one of the very rare Hallmark movies that's actually a decent movie by normal movie standards, so I have to give it credit. Instead of the usual boring time travel plot of "oh no, what if we change history?", we get someone who's trying to change history, who does change history, and it's a good thing. The time travel mechanics surrounding that make no sense, but who cares? It's a fun story with an engaging cast, legitimately funny jokes, a sweet romance, and a solid plot.

If I had a nickel for every piece of media I’ve watched recently where the main character is in an unhappy marriage (with someone they first started talking to out of pity), meets the person they liked in college and starts thinking about what might have been, then tosses a coin into ~something~ wishing for a do-over, and suddenly wakes up back in college, IN JUNE 2006!!!!

There's a deep irony in Berserk being so admired by people who really really hate what Berserk is about on an emotional level, but especially when writers want to take influence from it. Because Berserk is very strong thematically, and someone who can't acknowledge subtext is going to whiff on emulating anything good.

#And by that I mean that like many of its influences and descendants the plot is fundamentally driven by toxic gay shit lol #Listen there's just no beating around the bush here: you either understand this type of story is super emotional #That the softness and hope and love for humanity is vital connective tissue between the edgy violent dark setting #And that at its core the queerness is *central*#Or you will just end up creating something toothless and cynical with tokenizing bullshit at best #You cannot make that lightning strike twice if you're too scared to even write that shit as ACTUALLY core to the plot #You don’t have to make your shit gay to be good you just have to understand if your major influence was gay and why #So that you respect subtext and thematic writing and emotional resonance in writing in general #And maybe understand that if you also want credit for pushing the envelope you get where the real standard is #This is one of those things I see in equal measure in dudebro homophobes and supposedly progressive queers #No that wasn't “bait/delusion” it was barely subtext and if you go into writing with that attitude you're going to write shallow shit lol #I genuinely believe when people lament about reading comprehension they're actually talking about willful ignorance #Because willfull ignorance *does* cause a need to deny reality to a point where it warps your ability to understand information #Having difficulty comprehending text from a learning disability or improper teaching #Has fucking nothing on someone whose deliberately trained themselves to rationalize away anything uncomfortable #Tag rant over but this shit really is a plague and you can see it so starkly when it comes to Berserk #An undeniably respectable work from a place many envious little goblins that covet it do not actually respect

I just realized something. In the 20+ fics and comics I've read since finishing Disco Elysium, if there is a distinct Harry Ideological Type, it is always, ALWAYS Communist Harry.

Literally never seen anything but a fiery communard if politics are included at all. Whether that's because this personality/alignment simply seems to fit him best, or the lines therein are the funniest (I think at least) or DE simply appeals to a uh. Specific political type? Unclear. Possibly all of the above

Anyway I just think it's great we're all somehow unanimously on the same collective page

wowww I just watched Love Strikes Twice and it was actually wonderful! It was sweet and funny and I could really see the couple’s teamliness and what Maggie’s mom told her about finding “the one” (or there not being a One) was kind of just what I needed to hear right now. I’m so glad you told me about it <3

I'm so thrilled you loved it! Recommending Hallmark movies is dangerous because low expectations can skew my idea of what's "good", so it's a relief to know my instincts weren't totally off.

I actually rewatched this movie about a week before you sent this, and I was thrilled to find that it held up. It's so sweet and funny, and yes, the teamliness! They felt like a real couple! I realized that the reason this feels more real than most Hallmark romances is that they let the guy be dorky. There's a scene where she tells him, "I know you have a thing [edit: she means a phobia/disgust] about wearing other people's clothes", and it's just a funny little detail that you'd see in a real person, not in a wish-fulfillment Hallmark guy. That kind of thing informs all the characters, and it's great.

And yes! The speech about "the one" was one of my favorite moments on rewatch. It's exactly what I think about the subject--"true love" is about choosing to love the person you've made a commitment to--and I wish more romance films in general (not just Hallmark ones) would recognize this.
