Dontis x Hunter

Hunter plated the gumbo with care, garnishing it with fresh herbs and a scoop of fluffy white rice. They set the dish in front of Dontis with a flourish. "Bon appétit."

Dontis took the first bite, and for a moment, the world seemed to stop. The complex flavors exploded across his palate—spicy, savory, with just the right hint of heat, balanced perfectly by the sweetness of the seafood. The texture was flawless, each bite melting in his mouth, leaving him in a state of pure bliss.

"Hunter..." Dontis set his spoon down slowly, looking up with wide eyes. "This is... I mean..." He paused, searching for the right words. "This is transcendent."

Hunter rolled their eyes, though their smile gave them away. "Well, if you’re lucky, I might make it again."

"I’m feeling very lucky right now." Dontis squeezed their hand gently. "And very, very grateful."

They shared a quiet moment, the warmth of the meal and their connection filling the room. For Dontis, who had tasted countless desires in his long life, nothing compared to the simple, powerful magic of a home-cooked meal made with love.

Today's Bat: Minecraft Bat

Minecraft is a classic game, and I've always liked that it included bats as a kind of set dressing. I wish they did a bit more, but that won't stop me from reviewing them!

Environmental Impact: These guys could not have less of an impact. They exist to squeal and make you jump when they fly out of a dark cavern without warning. They don't provide any experience or loot when they die, so they aren't of much use to a player. They get to hang around and look cute, and that's it. There are some bat companion mods out there: Companion Bats and Pet Bats were the ones I found with a quick search. Both these mods have bats eating Pumpkin Pie, so I'll say that they are solidly not part of the game's food web.

Beauty: Here's a first for the blog: Minecraft bats received a redesign in 2019, with Version 1.14. The original bat has a more Minecraft aesthetic, with a blocky head and stiff wings. I don't think you were ever meant to look at them too closely. The newer bat is both cuter and more realistically bat-like, with well-defined wing shape, a square nose pad, and nice big ears to echolocate with. It's not calling out to any specific species that I can discern, but it's a vast improvement over Bat 1.0.

EDIT: @cornbread-but-cringey pointed out an error here: The bat redesign was actually completed in 2023. I confused this for a texture update from 2019. Thank you for the correction!

Power: Sorry, Minecraft bats, but I can't seem to find much to write home about here. There's apparently a special type of bat called a Witches' Bat that explodes upon impact with the player... which I've learned happens once "SkyBlock-yearly" during the "Spooky Festival". I was entirely unaware of both the "SkyBlock-year" and the "Spooky Festival" until writing this post, and I'm amazed that there are still things about Minecraft I've never heard.

kanęhúʔčhęʔ = Cornbread, made of Indian white corn (kanęhakè·ra·t) that has been dried, ground up, boiled, and molded into a loaf (alongside kidney beans).

All Haudenosaunee nations make cornbread, but it's more common around special events and holidays, as making it takes a ton of work and time.

The different nations have different ways of making cornbread. Kanyęʔkyehá·kaʔ (Mohawk) people tend to grind the corn until it's a very fine uniform texture and then pack it tightly into small balls, whereas we leave some kernels unground in order to make the texture more porous and able to retain water.

Soup made of boiled white Indian corn, kidney beans and salt pork. Again, different nations make it differently. Mohawks add vegetables to theirs while we just leave it at the aforementioned three ingredients.

Urà·neh is... well, I won’t say it’s "easier" to make than kanęhúʔčhęʔ, but it’s more common to see because it's a little less time-intensive to make.

There are also different variations on urà·neh, such as roasted corn soup, where the kernels are roasted instead of boiled soft.

kataʔnaręhrá·heʔ = frybread. Also sometimes referred to as "scones." Water, flour, and baking soda rolled into dough and fried in oil.

Some don't consider this a traditional food, but nevertheless, it's what our grandmothers made during times of hardship and there were no other ingredients on hand.

The typical problems people encounter when making frybread are either making the dough too hard (not enough water) or not frying it thoroughly enough. My mom taught me that you'll know if the oil is hot enough if you stick the end of a wooden spoon into the pan and see bubbles form around it.

Frybread takes different toppings; butter, salt pork, jam, powdered sugar, or made into a taco.

Nú·ʔyaʔ is basically like Halloween on New Year's Day, except we go around our neighbors' houses shouting "Nú·ʔyaʔ!" for baked treats. Just like with Halloween, you never know what you’re going to get, so you plan your route accordingly lol. You can also ask to take an extra treat for the driver.

Most treats are homemade, but some people put out storebought stuff like učáʔreh (donuts). Or like apples and juice boxes lol.

I don’t know how true this is, but I was told as a child that on New Year's Day, you become part of your father's clan - normally you'd be considered your mother's clan because we are matrilineal - just for that day and can ask members of your father's clan for uwì·reh.

Traditionally, uwì·reh are gingerbread men, but these days people bake pie for uwì·reh, usually apple.

It also used to be customary for the giver of uwì·reh to snap the head off if the person who requested it was "voiceless," or had parents from the same clan (since it's incest).

Cornbread's Texture Fixer Devlog v0.9.0 - Beta 6 December 8th, 2024

i've decided i'm going to be doing weekly devlogs for whatever pack i'm working on at the time. primarily so this blog (pretend i posted this to the mc sideblog; i saved the draft wrong) isn't overrun with my responses to the vanilla change logs, but also, it adds a bit of structure to this whole thing. (well, i say this, but i've also put this off by multiple days).

anyway, first things first, i have updated my fix to the sides of grass blocks to account for the pale garden. (vanilla on left, resource pack on right)

it isn't perfect, but that's mostly because minecraft's biome blending as a whole isn't perfect.

also, i only included the colors for transitions to dark forests, birch forests and groves, since i'm contemplating increasing the number of colors for each biome transition again. that'd be a lot of work for something that i don't even know if it'll be more accurate, so i haven't yet come to a decision, but once i do, i will finish the pale garden biome transitions.

these are the only transitions i even found generating naturally anyway, and bedrock edition does not yet have /fillbiome, so this shouldn't be noticeable in-game, but if it is, i would appreciate if people told me.

i fixed the issue this pack was having with cobblestone walls, as i said i would.

i removed the textures for the different types of nether bricks, since vanilla fixed their issue, but to match them (and other kinds of bricks), i shifted the texture for mud bricks over a pixel to the left, so that the stuff in between the bricks (i forgor what it's called) is on the right side.

in very early versions, this pack and Conglomeration were initially meant to be one and the same, but that ended up getting changed. while a bunch of features got removed in favor of just having them in conglomeration, bedrock edition's green item slot highlight is just really ugly, and so the java-edition-styled highlights stayed in the pack for a long time, up until their removal in Beta 5.

i reverted that back.

turns out, the green slot highlight, apart from being really ugly, is also really difficult to work with from a creative perspective. particularly, in the crafter screen and the new bundle tooltip (bundle ui changed slightly in game version 1.21.50).

so i re-implemented all the JE-styled highlights i had from Beta 4. (i also reverted the changes to the buttons on the beacon screen, since those use the same color palette). there were some small changes to the json, but those aren't super important. what is important is that these changes meant i had to start paying attention to the bundle ui, which, of course, is off center. so i fixed that.

sidenote, but you ever notice that light blue and light gray bundles have long enough names to stretch the ui?? java edition has its bundle ui pre-stretched to deal with this, which is kinda silly imo.

anyway, i also did the highlight inside the bundle ui:

this is mostly accurate to java edition, except the slot background doesn't disappear when the highlight is visible, since the background of the tooltip is already opaque (and therefore inaccurate) anyway.

this uses two different textures (directly adapted from the java edition textures) because i couldn't get it accurate otherwise, but it might still be technically better optimized than vanilla, since it isn't needlessly checking whether touch controls are being used (selecting an item with touch controls instantly closes the bundle ui).

speaking of which, i also fixed bundles with pocket ui.

i'm holding off on pocket ui until the end of this pack's development, but i figured since i'm already here and pocket bundles are in the same file as classic bundles, i might as well.

aaaaand before we leave bundle land, i just want to say that Beta 5 has an issue where a closed bundle is visible behind the open bundle when scrolling through a bundle's contents in a crafting grid specifically. i don't have an installation of Beta 5 right now to show this off with, but i fixed it.

one of my favorite parts of this pack is the way it changes the recipe book (/creative inventory). in vanilla, as with the rest of the ui, things are just kinda scaled willy nilly. the scrolling part of the recipe book doesn't quite fit into the space allotted, but this pack fixes that. (would you believe me if i said it was difficult? you shouldn't, because that would be me lying.)

one of the things this pack neglected to fix previously was the length that the recipe book scrolls. in vanilla, as with some other parts of the ui, the recipe book scrolls down farther than it should, leaving a noticeable gap between the buttons and the bottom of the scrolling area.

i didn't previously have any idea what the issue was on account of scrolling panels being complicated, but i've since messed around with dropdowns, learning a lot about scrolling in the process. the issue was the exact first thing i thought to check. mojang should be ashamed.

last things last, mojang added an option to the GUI Log Level dropdown in the settings screen, making it scroll. this pack previously made it not be considered scrolling, since it didn't scroll before, but now that it does, this change has been reverted, with the fixes for scrolling dropdowns now in effect.

misadventures as a pet carer/sitter but I cannot stand corn litter. I know it's good for the environment and we do have an excess of corn in the US especially but the thing is. a) it's dusty and every cat I know who uses it has sneezing/wheezing issues, HOWEVER, b) (most egregious) whenever it absorbs pee it starts to look an awful lot like.... uhhhhhh....Maybe something is wrong with me, but my brain goes "food??? is food???". The clumps have the exact texture and color. it rings the dinner bell. I have to fight the urge to eat the forbidden cornbread.

okey so i've figured out why green hud has mild issues with cornbread's texture fixer. the good news: it's super easy to fix. the bad news: the issue is with texture fixer.

for context, currently, with green hud v1.0.1 (default subpack) over cornbread's texture fixer v0.5.0, certain icons in the dressing room will turn green when their buttons are hovered over. i didn't notice the icons getting tinted because with cornbread's texture fixer over vanilla, the icons are tinted white, so they just look normal.

i've managed to make it so that this issue doesn't happen with just green hud, but the green hud + texture fixer combo is still broken.

it's not a big enough deal for me to release a hotfix, but it is a compatibility issue, which i don't want, and will be fixed sometime before texture fixer's full release, whenever that is. green hud's default subpack is already buggy as shit so it's probably fine for now.

@gardengalwrites is an amazing writer and she is particularly skilled at writing food descriptions that drive me crazy! When I read about the spicy mascarpone sauce in Death Shall be No More (great fic btw!) I HAD to have it. But it didn't exist in real life! What do???

Well, I decided to make it myself.

It is sweet and spicy with a bleu-cheese sauce-like texture that is meant to be served cold. You're supposed to dip super crispy fried chicken in it, as it is in the story. I haven't been able to try it with chicken yet but I HAD to finalize the recipe because I thought it would go really well with the cornbread I was making. (Spoiler Alert: HELL YEAH it was)

Here is the recipe for anyone who is curious:

1/3 cup Mascarpone Cheese 1 tbl sp. Chili Oil 1 tbl sp. Buttermilk* 1/2 tbl sp. Maple Syrup

Just combine all the ingredients in a bowl and you got yourself some Mascarpone's (in-fic restaurant) mascarpone cheese sauce from Death Shall be No More by Garden_Gal! * Or should I say Buttercup? Hehehe...

A tumblr post I read just inficted upon me a mortal wound, by mentioning one of my favorite snacks as a kid, and reminding me it's a food of the impoverished. the food was peanut butter and syrup sandwiches. in my child hood growing up between the forested mountians of the north east, the swamp, and marshes of the south east and the getto parts of Atlanta, Erie and New Orleans. I've had several variations on that sandwich. acorn butter and syrup, sunflower butter and honey, peanut butter and cherry gum. all of them delicious. all of them can be made from scratch, with differing breads, butters and spreadable sweets. my personal favorite was alway jack cakes (cornbread pancakes) with bulltail grass and acorn butter, and clover honey. incase your wondering bulltail grass seed is very oily even when dried, making it an easy way to thin up an acorn butter to a peanut butter texture.
