#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#wen chao#wen zhuliu#Apologies for how much I skipped in the last part of this episode.#I do love the scene of Jiang Cheng regaining his will to live and the ensuing scenes of Wei Wuxian seeing him off at the mountain base.#At the same time I very much want to keep pressing on with the story.#The notes I have are for scenes I did not draw:#I still think a lot about the symbolism of food in both consumption and giving - especially in regards to the Yunmeng Trio.#Prior to JC leaving we see WWX out buying food for him. Something that initially falls through as JC runs back to Lotus Pier.#But here it comes back full circle. WWX gives away a part of himself to be 'consumed' by Jiang Cheng.#It is about being led by desire (JC wanting revenge to losing his will to live to wanting his core back)#and about being bound by duty to do whatever it takes to see those desires through to the end.#JC can't eat until he has his desire to live back. WWX carves out his own ambitions to help another reach theirs.#And it isn't held up as noble! Not even once! He is routinely punished and criticized for this sacrifice.#Being thrown into the burial mounds really is just symbolism for how we can give away every scrap of ourselves to others-#-and find ourselves at rock bottom. Alone.#When you hollow yourself out it just leaves room for something else to fill it. Something worse.

love season 2. i'm concussions! and i'm psychic visions! the headache brothers
#s2 might be my favorite full season hands down even though some of my favorite single episodes/emotional arcs come later#which is weird bc it also has a lot of stuff in it i DON'T like (the way gordon was handled. some annoying motws. et cetera)#but overall it's well paced entertaining has a great score as per usual for the early years . and balances intrigue with grief and fear#and they're SO headaches. the advil consumption in that household (carhold?) is in the double digits daily . ulcers forming as we speak#also croatoan is in this season! one of THE most dread-filled eps they ever did#plus of course what is & what should never be (goes without saying) all hell breaks loose part one last five minutes (goes WITHOUT saying)#etc etc#like you can tell there's a lot of gamble here but it's in a good way#um. the wizard van telepath. victor hi victor . sorry about these horrible boys . houses of the holy!! there's like zero complete misses#i think gabriel is annoying but the CONCEPT of his first episode was still great. don't love the early jodean dynamic but i like how it end#they spend a lot of time genuinely having to deal with The Law etc . the stuff that happens in this one more than even s1 sets the tone#for like everything that follows. for better or worse. the cycle of death/sacrifice/rebirth/sacrifice . the beginning of the religion angle#the expansion of the world (for a while anyway)#i'd go so far as to call it 'good television'#spn

Finally got around to watching ep 11 (´;ω;`)
#I'm late...#I'm sorry I wasn't able to watch the episode by time last week but again. Food poisoning. And then the new chapter came out#I feel like I had much more to say when I started watching it last week...#Mmmmhh. I really like when bsd animation uses the colored lineart effect for flashbacks / subspaces (Anne's Room‚ Poe's books).#I think it's one of the prettiest and most original things of the bsd animation.#I've always felt like the Natsume reveal was a bit coming out of nowhere lol.#Here's this legendary ability user everyone knows but no one has ever seen with this immensely unthinkable powerful ability...#That the reader literally wasn't ever made aware of in the previous 49 chapters lol#After all that build up‚ his ability even feels a little underwhelming.#Which I suppose was the intended result‚ but I'm not sure it really works all that well in the end.#Then Naomi's words “Come to think of it‚ the things that happen when Mii-chan vanishes [...]‚ disasters are stopped every time”#really feel soooo out of place when so-called Mii-chan was never before mentioned up to this episode (╥﹏╥)#But I'll stop complaining. It's nothing big really#Fukuzawa and Mori's relationship is very homoerotic. Tbh#I looooove the ss/kk I don't even have much to say just watching scenes of them interacting together fills my heart of a warm feeling :')#The animation quality is very poor and the drawings are very undetailed but really I love ss/kk too much to care.#A lot of emphasis is put by the fandom on Atsushi's cruel remark towards Akutagawa in this ch/ep and it *is* cruel but really...#Akutagawa had literally just attacked Atsushi in a death-threatening way‚ futilely and completely unprompted#I can't find it in myself to blame Atsushi if he was irritated and lashed out at him.#And all their other moments are just so cute. What do you mean Akutagawa is deeply interested in understanding Atsushi's motivations.#What do you mean Atsushi can't get Akutagawa out of his mind!!!! They're so cute#So many more cute moments were cut out too rip lawnmower line you'll always be missed rip date line you'll always be missed#I feel like Pushkin's character is another instance of‚‚‚ Wow me and the author's morals really don't align at all#I really don't like the narrative of “weaker people will constantly try to harm and take advantage of strongest ones”#random rambles#Fun fact when I watched this episode for the first time I asked my mother to join me. Because I know a ss/kk scene was coming and I really–#didn't want to watch it alone. Well as it turned out the whole first half of the episode was dedicated to old man fighting–#and she gave up after that 😂😂 But I'm still grateful to her for trying.

(Long Rant Ahead) Remember This about Brain:
Spin-off Brain wanted to take over the world to make it a better place for all because he knew the people currently in charge were doing an awful job.
Reboot Brain wanted to control the world so that he could never be hurt again. If he wanted to make the world a better place, he wouldn't have pulled most of the shit he did in the reboot, including but not limited to:
(Mega hot-take below the list)
Throwing Pinky under the bus in order to save himself (Pinko and the Brain)
Implying he'd use children to build weapons of war (Mousechurian Candidate)
Fantasizing about almost killing world leaders to gain control of their countries (Happy Narfday)
Literally stripping someone of their autonomy and abusing his power to the point of their sanity breaking altogether (All 3 Julia episodes)
And don't get me started on the shit he puts his best and ONLY friend through (The whole damn reboot pretty much)
I very much liked Brain's development throughout the course of the reboot because, after letting each season sit, the pieces would come together and everything would somewhat make sense. But now that the reboot is over and Brain's development is complete, I can honestly say that he is so far from the person he used to be.
THIS is the exact reason why I view PEatB as canon:
THINK ABOUT IT
If you look at each series in chronological order and get to that spin-off show, you see Brain at his wits end, constantly getting punched down even when he isn't doing anything wrong. A villain arc was not too far fetched when considering that as part of the timeline of events.
But, if we completely disregard peatb, then this jump in character remains unexplained. And bear in mind that even with my reasoning, I believe Brain's character was NOT handled well in the reboot.
Hopefully, if that little guy graces the screen again before I turn 30, he'll be written to be just a touch more kind, if not almost exactly like he was in the old days.
#pinky and the brain#animaniacs#long ramble#i could fill a book with all the things that brain did that initially pissed me off#i'm actually planning to write an entire video essay on Julia and how she impacts Pinky and Brain's characters so drastically to the point#that it's detrimental to them#i also plan to write out all of my thoughts on Happy Narfday#as it remains one of my least favorite episodes that a LOT of fans seem to still hold dear to them

I already said this but if u make Aisha the tallest in ur fanart i hate u a lil
#i was gonna say tallest and buffest#and that’s true bc I still hate u a lil#just kinda less bc she’s implied to be the sporty one#but also It’s so so easy for y’all to masculinize black women#and It’s weird bc nobody every talks about how her role growing up prevented her from doing much#so even tho she’s super sporty now build wise it should be swimmer/dancer#and again I understand the liberation of women through musculature that’s literally where I’m at rn#but i don’t think y’all get the type of battle it is for black woman#‘but blank’ u say ‘the racial breakdown on magix is not the same as irl’#‘but random person’ I respond ‘racial dynamics exist irl and impact how we view our media and as early as s1 episode 12 Rai dub winx has#shown it’s not exempt from showcasing racial bias - that’s the Afro episode.’#anyways my point is#i get it and it’s not like I hate Black ppl racism#It’s more like that bath and body works accidental kkk racism#Steven universe in general#a lack of black ppl who know their shit in the writers room#and by the writers room I mean you#Ur tablet#Ur drawing of how big buff Aisha towers over dainty lil musa#who’s subversive bc she gets afforded the character trope of gremlin#well she’s still victimized and did nothing wrong in any of her relationships but she has sharp teeth in her wide grin so rlly it evens out#and aisha is. therapist friend.#no wait! she makes a sassy comeback bc Stella’s being vain!!#and then she’s stroking Musa’s hair and telling her ni- Oop men ain’t shit she don’t need no man!#aisha will just fill in :)#ok that last bit is a lot more venting frustration like that’s less to do with fanart and winx and more how racism bleeds through fucking#everything#so main main point is. stop being white?! enough!! also a lot of y’all can be semi normal about flora bc even tho she’s Latina it’s still hc#territory and y’all see her as like. white with an extra oomf. so the stereotypes y’all usually push onto Latinas are impossible to push w/#plus the way she’s written doesn’t have the leeway that the way aisha is. they both get whitewashed just the same tho sad

@bengiyo I don't know where anon is getting the info, mdl has the 12 episode. With the finale being slated for March 9.
Dead friend forever supposedly has 15 episodes. I’m not sure how or why.
Nonnie, that is too many.
#dead friend forever#i know mdl is not always reliable#but still#15 is too many#if it's not all murder-mystery and we really do get a reveal early#which we might not get (the cliffhanger could be a misdirect)#we might get some kind of tonal shift#where instead of muder-mystery the murder starts putting the boys on trial#change horror from slasher to physicological horror#but even with that idea 15 ep is way too many episodes#i mean even accounting for a large epilogue in the final episode#because thai bls love their epilogues#and maybe for an episode of backstory where we see what happened with their friend last time#that is still a lot of episodes to fill

funniest thing that happened this christmas— my brother went to help pick the baby up from her mom on christmas eve and stayed in the backseat with her on the long car ride back to help prevent a meltdown and then the next day was like “bluey rules. i mean this seriously that show is so good. that sleepy time episode is phenomenal, they did their own rendition of jupiter, it was so well-done.” literally had a danny devito “i get it now” moment
#I’m not a certified bluey watcher myself but up until recently some of my medical stuff#was still treated in a pediatric hospital so I caught a lot of episodes in waiting rooms and stuff#and I occasionally flipped on an episode when I just needed something simple to tune out while drawing#anyway conversation came about because the baby LOVES bluey and i got her a bluey plush for Christmas and asked how she liked it#(also my parents’ house is now filled with bluey stuff so many people got the baby bluey merch)

to knowis to be loved and to be known is to b eloved. I want transgender friends who will know me and love me in a way that cis people usually do not
#getting floored by transgendered feelings tonight. I went full femme last night in a way that I haven’t in a long time and it really made#it clear that what I enjoy about looking feminine is the ATTENTION. PEOPLE PAY SO MUCH GODDAMN ATTENTION TO PRETTY WOMEN#I will fully admit that I love getting positive attention for my looks irl. Like I’m not really pretty unless I#put a lot of effort into makeup and clothes so getting compliments on my clothes/appearance is like crack cocaine#which is not healthy. I don’t WANT to care about what I look like#but tbh one of the reasons I enjoyed cosplaying so much is that I got all that attentiob without the requisite feminity. Hahaha hhhhhhh#Last night as I was putting myself together for the charity dinner I felt like I was dressing up a doll. FULL out-of-body barbie vibes#I’m so disconnected from feminine feelings right now. But at the same time I had so much fun being pretty and getting compliments#idk. I don’t even know how to feel. I’m so goddamned tired of all this#if I could beam a perfect understanding of gender fluidity into the brains of everyone I meet I would have come out YEARS ago#I just don’t want to be alienated any more than I already am from the people around me#living in the us south means suffering alone in transness I guess.#I don’t want to be the first genderfluid/nonbinary person EVERYONE has ever met. I don’r want to have to justify my existence#but this cannot go on. but I’m afraid of T. I don’t want to go bald 😭#and I still want to wear dresses from time to time#maybe the solution is becoming a lolita lifestyler. dress myself up as a doll every day for the fucking compliments#leave no room for dissatisfaction with feminity. FUCK#I NEED A GENDER THERAPIST WORSE THAN ANYTHING#BUT IT’S THE SOUTH AND THE NEAREST ONE TO ME IS OVER AN HOUR AWAY#AND she’s out of network. FUCK#anyway I watched an episode of the new f*llout show and it was pretty good 😊#AND I’m playing st*rdew valley again on the new update and the update IS SO FUN#<-lil media update to lighten up this post.#this post was typed up not from a place of despair but from a place filled with the same emotions that a dog chasingits owntail experiences#I’m doing well enough mentally that I can deal with my transgender feelings again yknow. maslows heirarchy of needs with m#with transgender feelings at the top#weekend whining

team plasma arc is still looking like my favorite arc overall bc N has consistently been very good but yikes the last few parts of best wishes really kinda start to fall apart
#i think i still like it a lot but i feel like the writing gets... dumber?#like every episode in this team plasma arc that hasnt had team plasma themselves orN is only Just There feels very weird#one thing i noticed is that iris and cilan keep speaking at the exact same time#and it gives me the vibe of ''oh god we arent secure in these characters anymore so we're gonna reel it in''#and this is a problem throughout bw ofc but yeah ash somehow gets even dumber and its just frustrating to watch#especially with sarah's really bland performance.#i think its also that team rocket is more common again and they just fill up screentime#and they arent even funny so its like i cant even laugh#echoed voice#pokeani lb#and overall the writing just feels more. juvenile? idk if thats the right word bc this is a kids show and all#but it feels a lot more dumbed down. which is weird bc the team plasma arc when it is going is kinda fucked up#iris and cilan also simutanously have less to do and they feel flanderized? like i mentioned iris before but cilans gone back to being borin#maybe thats why i didnt care for him as a kid bc my final impression of him was the declore islands incarnation#idk i feel like the worst aspects of bw are really starting to come out here bc they just didnt know what they wanted to do#like charizard comes back next episode and from what i remember it barely even does anything besides.... be fanservice to OS really#even tho they get rid of seismic toss which was part of why it was so iconic so why did they bother with that even

Got myself a treat yesterday
#The Pokémon movies were quite cheap and I spontaneously got hit by a wave of nostalgia so I thought “yk what I'm going to buy all my#Teen/childhood movies from back then when I started getting into Pokémon#My school library used to have all the Pokémon movies up to Gen 5 and I borrowed them all the time#And I used to watch the Gen 6 movies online on PokéTube when it was still available#So yeah I had to fill the Gen 6 void and I also bought the Gen 4 movies because I remember liking them a lot as a kid#Also 9-10 euros for two movies is really good honestly I found Pokémon movies at MediaMarkt as well but one movie was#Like 14.55#So yeah the bundle movies it is#Müller also had sets of the early seasons and I was tempted to buy it but they didn't have Indigo League anymore but most of Johto#And I personally didn't like Johto because of the insane amount of filler#And I barely remember any filler episode that actually sticked with me except a handful of episodes I thought were cool or there was a#longer arc tied to it#I might get the Gen 3 movies next because I remembered that I liked them too as a kid#But the second Polyband Anime drops the Gen 6 series DVD set I'm the first one to buy it 100%

Help, I need something to watch, but nothing is jumping out to me.
(update: via tags rambling, I have decided that it is finally time for me to continue watching Critical Role Campaign 1...)
#I need something to fill the good omens hole.#and honestly i'm still looking to fill the CR2 hole.#but nothing will ever fill that.#it's too big.#maybe I should go back to watching CR1... That's a thing I should do.#it really is#morrigan.text#delete later#and then I can watch CR3 someday...#agh I have such complicated feelings on CR and the passage of time.#because I hate change and I tend to associate actors with one character forever.#and CR3 is terrifying because I already knew a lot about CR1 going in because of the references and fanart from during CR2.#but CR3 is uncharted territory which scares me for some reason.#but I also do not want spoilers of any kind.#anyways.#I think I'm gonna watch an episode of CR1 tonight.#I wanna meet artagan!!!#I love that asshole

It's crazy how Dungeon Meshi's manga can feel more cinematic and emotional than the anime to me, even when they're practically the same. Compared to the anime, this moment is such a heartbreaking gut-drop. The way Kui uses negative space and flat compositions to create a sense of horrific stillness is so key.
The way the text (Senshi's monologue) is sequestered to an empty corner of a panel or huddled away from the edge of its text box is not only a great way of showing Senshi's headspace (fearful, isolated, dissociating), but creates a visual representation of pause, as if you hold your breathe after each line. The first panel puts us directly in Senshi's perspective too (compared to in the anime, which puts us as an outside observer over Senshi's shoulder). The detail of the door and bricks so effectively implies that he stared at it for so long, waiting and hoping, that its image is burned in his memory. The wood grain, the brick arch, the number of rivets. The lack of dialogue in the second panel shows a moment of realization too –– "he's dead" (also a great example of the Kuleshov effect). And it's that pause that creates a beat and sets a great rhythm to his headspace, like a music rest: "He never came back." (oh god.) "I'm all alone." Finally, the third panel's negative space, cropping Senshi, shows how truly alone he feels. Without his family, the world ceases to exists. Under shock, he traps himself in a 1-foot radius, too scared to even perceive a world outside its boundaries; a world that can hurt him, kill him, make him disappear with it. There is only his body, the stone beneath his feet and against his back, his thoughts, and that awful bowl of soup.
Even though they're a series of flat images, there's an implicit reading of silence in Senshi's realization and horror. Kui influences your experience to slow down and take your time.
Compare this to the anime, which fills every shot with dialogue. The pacing is fast; we never get to sit in silence like we do with the manga. The horizontal frame allowed the boarders to add Senshi, turning the composition into an over-the-shoulder shot, which takes us out of Senshi's POV. They also added a zoom-out in shot one, which adds unnecessary energy to a very somber scene. The tightening on Senshi as a close-up reaction shot also dulls the moment. In the original panel, Senshi stares ahead at the empty space to his left as a shadow surrounds his mind. It not only shows how Senshi's senses are dulling and his world is shrinking (setting up panel three), but shows how terrified Senshi is of what's in front of him, how the air itself becomes pitch black and opaque, how Senshi is surrendering himself to fear. The pacing is understandable and necessary; this episode packed a lot of story content together. It's just a shame because it really (imo) deflated one of the most nauseating moments in Dungeon Meshi.
#dungeon meshi#senshi#analysis#personal#long post#not art#because comics are inherently more abstract and rule-breaky the format thrives off show don't tell#i think trigger is doing a great job overall but they missed the mark on this scene#for me cinematic storytelling will prioritize rhythm; tension; and silence over plot. that's why the manga feels more “cinematic”#if you've been enjoying the anime i cannot recommend also reading the manga enough. it's a completely different experience with much more#subtext and emotion to draw from

you know what really grinds my gears?
okay, bear with me: so as you may know, harry houdini and arthur conan doyle were friends, at least for a while.
by the early 1920s, both arthur conan doyle and acd's wife jean, aka lady doyle, believed whole-heartedly in spiritualism, talking to ghosts and all of that. (sidenote: this was of course right on the heels of a devastating world war and a devastating pandemic, both of which had created a huge population of grieving people, so spiritualism was having a moment.)
lady doyle sincerely thought she had the ability to go into a trance state and pass along messages in writing from the dead. she offered to do this for houdini. houdini agreed.
lady doyle attempted to channel houdini's late mother. she basically drew a cross at the top of the paper and filled it with generic platitudes addressed to "harry." houdini's mom was jewish and didn't talk like that, so houdini knew the jig was up, even if lady doyle didn't. but not wanting to make the situation awkward, he kind of went along with it to their faces.
then acd decided to publish a glowing account of the seance, and since both he and houdini were super famous, it got a lot of attention, and letters started pouring in for houdini, asking if this was true. ultimately, houdini couldn't lie about it. so he essentially said, like, "yeah, i think lady doyle THINKS she can talk to ghosts but she absolutely can't." and it ruined his friendship with acd forever.
and then of course a lot of the people running seances weren't even well-intentioned like lady doyle, they were just simple charlatans taking advantage of traumatized people mourning loved ones. in houdini's youth, he and his wife had traveled the carnival circuit where he did an act pretending to commune with spirits, so he knew all the tricks of the trade AND he had lingering guilt over having done this, AND he was infuriated by this increasingly popular wave of con artists so he decided to assemble a team of anti-grifting grifters and together they went on the road exposing whichever spiritualists were preying on the locals.
houdini's best agent was a young woman named rose mackenberg, who donned disguises to visit the fraud de jour and then importantly sussed out what non-supernatural thing was actually happening, and then houdini would demonstrate the techniques onstage to packed audiences.
(if you want to know more, check out episode 175, "ghost racket crusade" of the podcast Criminal or read Tony Wolf's book The Real-Life Ghostbusting Adventures of Rose Mackenberg.)
but yeah, what really gets my goat is that all this happened and as far as i know, we still don't have like four seasons of a Leverage-style historical procedural about rose mackenberg and the rest of the crew having adventures in the 1920s as they unmask craven hucksters all over the united states. (what we do have, apparently, is one season of a show called "houdini and doyle" which is about the oddball friendship of two contrasting men solving sometimes-actually-supernatural mysteries, and whose premise does i think at the very least a real disservice to houdini's whole quest and also totally erases rose, who is arguably the most interesting part of this story to me.)
i am just steamed about this. steamed.
