Cruel and Unusual Punishments (the PSA episode).
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#wen zhuliu#The pay off of the juicebox finally comes to fruition. Wen Zhuliu was diabetic and trying to mange his low blood sugar.#The theme of WWX's revenge kills is 'cruel and unusual punishments' which is very much what I'd consider this to be.#I know this is a funny jokes blog and a funny jokes comics but:#Hypoglycemia is a serious medical emergency. Do *not* prank anybody who relies on quick sugars by hiding their stuff.#I am lovingly skipping the other brutal torture scenes in this episode <3 They happened off screen but I'm not ready to draw that.#This is the end for Wen Zhuliu. Mr. Core melting hand more like...uh...Snore Smelting hand (got 'em)#He feels like such a dominating and threatening force - and he has a lasting impact within the story.#And yet he is so spineless. He really is just the attack dog at the heels of the Wen Clan.#For all the airs he gives off about not *really* being 100% down with everything going on - he still goes along with it.#It's the most pathetic kind of evil in this world.#Rest uneasy in your grave Wen Zhuliu. No peace for you.

Au where wen zhuliu becomes jiang cheng's bodyguard
[on ao3]
The puppies tumbled over Jiang Cheng's lap, each trying to give him kisses. Their bellies were round with milk, and they still didn't know how to play like big dogs could. But that was okay, because Jiang Cheng would teach them.
"Little Love, Jasmine, Precious, be careful! You're going to fall out of my lap!" Jiang Cheng picked up each and gently set them down, but they kept returning. Frustrated, Jiang Cheng snapped, "No! Bad puppies!"
At the loud sound, the dogs flinched and looked around, seeming more confused than ever.
"Is something wrong, Jiang-gongzi?"
Zhao Zhuliu had recently joined the sect. He was tall and looked older than most adults Jiang Cheng knew other than the aunties and uncles who sold food by the docks. He always wore gloves and didn't smile. Because Jiang Cheng was a stupid baby, his mother had decided that Zhao Zhuliu would be his bodyguard. Jiang Cheng hated it. Only useless boys like Jin Zhen needed bodyguards.
But he did need help.
"We have to go see a-jie, but I can't carry them all," Jiang Cheng said.
Expressionless, Zhao Zhuliu replied, "I will carry two."
Jiang Cheng wasn't sure if bodyguards knew anything about dogs, so he picked up Little Love and showed Zhao Zhuliu how Jiang Yanli had shown him how to carry puppies. "They're really small and get scared easily," he said sternly, "so you can't move too quickly. You have to support their whole body, but don't hold them like a cat, because they might jump down and hurt themselves. And you have to be nice to them."
"I will," Zhao Zhuliu said.
Little Love and Jasmine were more adventurous than Precious, so Jiang Cheng handed them one at a time to Zhao Zhuliu. It was funny to see the wiggly puppies in his black gloved hands, but they seemed comfortable there. Jasmine even started licking Zhao Zhuliu's wrist.
Holding Precious like a baby, Jiang Cheng led the way to Jiang Yanli's courtyard where she learned girl things like illusion dances. Along the way, Jiang Cheng explained that these puppies were very smart, because they were farm dogs who protected sheep from tigers and yao. "The farmer said they think they're part of the flock, and sometimes when a sheep is taken they track it down, and they come back covered in blood because they're good dogs, and the sheep cuddle with them because they love them. We don't have any sheep, though."
After a moment of silence, Zhao Zhuliu asked, "Earlier, when you yelled, were you worried?"
Jiang Cheng could feel his shoulders curving in. "Yes, Zhao-shishu."
"Dogs can't understand Chinese, so they don't know why you yelled. You have to think like a dog. Puppies are still babies, and they understand even less than adult dogs. You're much older than they are, so it's your responsibility to show them how to act. How else could you have showed them what you wanted?"
Jiang Cheng slowed down. That was the most he had ever heard Zhao Zhuliu say. For the rest of the walk, he offered examples of how he could better train the puppies while Precious tried to eat his hair.
———
Father picked up Wei Ying even though he never picked up Jiang Cheng except three times. Wei Ying was crying over nothing and Jiang Cheng couldn't have his puppies anymore and Father was walking away. Two disciples Jiang Cheng couldn't recognize through his tears had already picked up his puppies and they weren't doing it right because nobody cared about his puppies at all.
Zhao Zhuliu knelt before Jiang Cheng. "Xiao-gongzi, do you trust me?"
Looking up through his tears, Jiang Cheng studied Zhao Zhuliu's face. He still looked old, but his expressions weren't as scary now that he didn't look blank all the time. Jiang Cheng didn't think Zhao Zhuliu hated him even though Jiang Cheng had thrown a tantrum when he was assigned a bodyguard, and he knew that Zhao Zhuliu knew about dogs, and even liked his puppies.
"Y-yeah," Jiang Cheng sobbed.
"I will find a flock for Precious, Jasmine, and Little Love to protect. They're going to have a lot of sheep friends, Xiao-gongzi."
"Can I visit them?"
"Zongzhu and Yu-furen will determine that," Zhao Zhuliu said.
Jiang Cheng knew what that meant. He cried harder.
"Xiao-gongzi," Zhao Zhuliu said, then started again. "Jiang Cheng, I will return as soon as I find them a home. I swear it."
Jiang Cheng wanted to say they already had a home, or that he would run away with them, but both would be petulant and stupid. He nodded. When Zhao Zhuliu gestured sharply at the two disciples, they brought the puppies to Jiang Cheng so he could say goodbye. "Be good, be good," he whispered, kissing the soft fur on their heads.

TMFY: CHAPTER 14
I'm sorry, Wen Zhuliu, I cannot draw your face 🤣 but I'm very pleased with how the "just had life-changing kind of feral post-mission sex and now the post-nut clarity is making us realise we all caught feelings along the way" art came out (no pun intended)

Wen Zhuliu's core melting hands. One of the hands-down most devastating thing to do to a cultivator and no one ever looked into it after Wen Zhuliu died? WWX's first thought wasn't to figure out how Wen Zhuliu's technique worked in order to find a way to fix JC? JGY, known cultivation technique gatherer, never thought, hey that might be a way 'I of mediocre cultivation' could protect myself better? JGS wanted demonic cultivation but conveniently forgot about core melting? Su 'go above and beyond to destroy my enemies' Minshan didn't jump on that? Jiang Cheng never considered that soemone else might figure out how to melt cores and explored the technique for prevention strategies? I think there's lots of potential for fic here.
The coolest thing is since the core melting hands are basically a plot device and we're never given any information about them you can make up whatever you want.
They could be a bloodline thing. A special super secret technique. Or specialized talismans woven into WZL's gloves.

The funniest moment in The Untamed, hands down, is Wen Zhuliu realizing his drink is drugged, considering saying something, deciding "Fuck it I'm not paid enough for this shit" and drinking it anyway

Wen Qing and Wen Zhuliu are like opposites. WZL is like "I have this super crazy destructive power related to golden cores and I don't particularly care about using it but my boss told me to use it for evil so I guess I'm doing that" while WQ is like "I have this super crazy life-changing idea related to golden cores and I really want to try it but I have too many ethical concerns so I guess I'll never get to do it"

Market based mistakes.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#wen chao#wen zhuliu#Apologies for how much I skipped in the last part of this episode.#I do love the scene of Jiang Cheng regaining his will to live and the ensuing scenes of Wei Wuxian seeing him off at the mountain base.#At the same time I very much want to keep pressing on with the story.#The notes I have are for scenes I did not draw:#I still think a lot about the symbolism of food in both consumption and giving - especially in regards to the Yunmeng Trio.#Prior to JC leaving we see WWX out buying food for him. Something that initially falls through as JC runs back to Lotus Pier.#But here it comes back full circle. WWX gives away a part of himself to be 'consumed' by Jiang Cheng.#It is about being led by desire (JC wanting revenge to losing his will to live to wanting his core back)#and about being bound by duty to do whatever it takes to see those desires through to the end.#JC can't eat until he has his desire to live back. WWX carves out his own ambitions to help another reach theirs.#And it isn't held up as noble! Not even once! He is routinely punished and criticized for this sacrifice.#Being thrown into the burial mounds really is just symbolism for how we can give away every scrap of ourselves to others-#-and find ourselves at rock bottom. Alone.#When you hollow yourself out it just leaves room for something else to fill it. Something worse.

happy mid-autumn festival!!! i hope it's a day of good fortune and reunion for everyone! i yearn for the day in which i am able to eat a mooncake.
much to my chagrin this drawing appears very different on desktop and on mobile but oh well. i think i'll take a crack at writing an ID for this one, just because there are a few characters! including xunyang 83 everyone else is offscreen lol but they're there i promise
[ID: a scene depicting a moonlit picnic to mark the start of mid-autumn festival, featuring several characters from MDZS, as well as two of the artist's own characters from a fic titled Dawn Chorus. in the bottom left corner sit Wen Zhuliu, Wang Lingjiao, Mo Xuanyu and Wen Chao. they are conversing pleasantly. the bottom right corner hosts Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng, Jin Zixuan and Jin Ling, alongside a puppy version of Fairy. Jiang Yanli has brought her famous soup, as well as some spring rolls. Jin Ling is lying down and holding a lantern as his mother strokes his back. Jin Zixuan has a loving arm around his wife's torso. behind them, Jiang Cheng is attempting to wrangle Fairy and keep her from eating their food. above and to the left sit the Dawn Chorus characters Wen Xun and the fic-specific version of Xue Yang, who has his arm around him as he laughs. they've brought wine. in Xue Yang's lap sits an infant, Hexie, who is reaching out to a fruit gleefully offered to them by Standard Edition Xue Yang, who is sitting a bit ahead with A-Qing, Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan, who smile at the scene while drinking tea and eating. they've brought a platter of crab. to the right of them sit Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, who are happily holding Lan Sizhui between them. their snack is watermelon. behind them, just arriving, are Mianmian, who is carrying her daughter in her arms, and her husband, who is carrying their lantern and food. behind them is Wen Qing, who is calling out to Wen Ning, who is rushing up to her with a smile and a box in his hands. the corner of a blanket in the top left and the top of someone's head in the bottom right suggest there are more people at the gathering. a few white flowers bloom on the grass everyone sits on, predominantly around Wen Xun. every picnic blanket has mooncakes, and most characters brought lanterns. many other lanterns are seen floating by and up into the sky, towards the full moon. the atmosphere is friendly and lighthearted. /end ID]
#mo dao zu shi#mdzs#wangxian#xuanli#yi city#dawn chorus#my art#and now for the character tags hoo boy (for the sake of archiving idt they will be in every tag lol)#also i can't believe standard edition xue yang initials spell THAT. well MAYBE HE IS#wen zhuliu#wang lingjiao#mo xuanyu#wen chao#jin ling#jiang yanli#jiang cheng#jin zixuan#wen xun#xue yang#hexie#a-qing#xiao xingchen#song lan#wei wuxian#lan sizhui#lan wangji#mianmian#mr mianmian#wen qing#wen ning

K. So.
It's 5AM, and I'm on the tail end of something that's been screwing with my sinuses and nose, BUT!!! I had??? A thought????
So. Wen Zhuliu. Golden core melting hand. He did what he did because he had a debt to pay, and Wei Wuxian was disguted by him. Why? Because the repayment involved the lives of those who weren't involved. And, I believe, because he turned his back on his family name. Wei Wuxian even offers to let him leave, iirc, but the doesn't and dies for his debt, which he killed others for and even gave up his family name to repay.
Now, Jiang Cheng. I've seen the part of the book floating around where he tried to speak up for the Wen Siblings (and only them), and Lan Xichen tried, too, and they were both overridden by the Nie and the Jin. At this point, Jiang Cheng backs down.
Like. What is he supposed to do? Pull a Wen Zhuliu and put other, uninvolved people at risk for his debt, which is huge? Because if he doesn't push it, he becomes a villain with no morals or sense of right and wrong, but his Sect is safe. If he does push it, he gets a moral pat on the back at the expense of, if not lives, then livelihoods for his rebuilding Sect. Because whether you believe the donghua regarding fire or not, the Jiang--and everyone else--were corralled in their own bases, ripe for the slaughter, by the Wen. And the Jiang were slaughtered. Yeah, 13 years later, they could afford all of those nets (which did strain their budget by the by), but they definitely couldn't post war. They had few people, little capital, and a green leader who gained no respect independently in the eyes of his peers.
He. Was. Weak. Not even "you've got the moral backbone of a chocolate exlaire." Just politicslly undermined and weak. He wasn't in a position to help without sacrificing someone who either made the choice themselves or just had to do what he told them to.
For a feelgood story, I would have loved if Jiang Cheng was able to stay by Wei Wuxian's side, but then that would change the story, the genre, and the characters. But I think that it's important that as much as Wen Zhuliu is an indication of Pure Moral Goodness for Wei Wuxian (who took his own debts entirely upon himself and did not put the loves at others at risk until provoked), he's also an indication of "well, wtf is a dude whose every action impacts those beneath him supposed to do??"
And that's my thought. Imma go back to sleep now.
