thinking about. the consistent thread in challengers (2024) of wanting your life to be about more than "hitting a ball with a racket."

how tashi is the first character to bring this up and whether or not she means it (she's really only planning to do a year of college) she knows inherently that being well rounded is practical. that she's not from the same place as the country club, tennis academy, daddy's money kids. this should be an unattainable dream for most, but it's hers and she has it and it's terribly ingrained into her life but "what if this doesn't work out?" and then it doesn't. she gets injured and she gets stuck in this loop of the past, in her own potential, in what could have been. when it feels like everyone is counting on you to do and succeed at one thing ("she's going to make her family millionaires"), the one thing that is the framework and catalyst for everything you know, how do you come back from that? her life could now, realistically, become about something else because she actually can't have her dream anymore, but she becomes obsessed, holding on with white knuckles and performing alterations because she can't let it go, until she admits sardonically in a mostly abandoned applebees that her life really has only been about one thing.

and patrick. who challenges tashi's original statement. who has no problem devoting his life to tennis because it's a "good way to avoid having a job." who never had any dreams beyond playing the sport he's always had a knack for, coasting by on natural talent, never having to try. realizing too late that what really made it worth it was tennis as a relationship, not the selfish ego stroke it had been when he was good enough to win tashi's number. and he's stuck in arrested development, just like her. he never grew up, he never let go of the past, of what it felt like to play doubles with his best friend, of what it felt like to watch tashi at the top of her game. but he's painfully aware. he's made his bed and he's tangled in the sheets and he loves it and he hates it and above all else, he misses the way it used to be.

then there's art. whose decision to go to stanford is never questioned because it's unspoken general knowledge that he couldn't have gone pro right away. he never expected to be this big time professional player, he was always just concerned with doing a "really good job." and because of this, art's life is the one that probably should have been about more, the foundation was laid for it. but he's stuck too, a passive actor in a life he chose and was probably never meant to have. the holder of and heir to tashi's and patrick's unrealized dreams. (was it ever his dream?) and after eight years, after attaining it and living it without a real passion for it, he's ready to give it up because, out of the three of them, he wants his life to be about more than "hitting a ball with a racket" because it's "embarrassing to be doing this shit when you're 40." but he's the one who bears the weight of success, alone at the top, where the people he loves can only dream of knocking him off. so shouldn't he be grateful for it?

Hey Kristen??? Please stop actively retraumatizing yourself for your friends??? I’m sure you can figure out what you need to without going back to church. I’m sure you could have talked to your friends about options so that you don’t have to have a biased and bigoted priest from your old religion be your teacher. You could have let your friends be in that room with you to support you. You told them you wanted to have that convo alone, and they stayed outside the room anyways!! This is why kipperlilly saying that Kristen doesn’t care was so out of line. She does care. She cares about everyone around her so much that she’s making decisions all on her own that are harmful to her. The only person Kristen needs to care about more is herself.

actually wait i do have a fucked up millie fact to share for the night. her s4-5 timeline in my head have her becoming best friends with chuck (read: Millie keeps breaking into his house despite his constant protests for her to Stop Doing That. in her defense, the roadhouse burned down and if she goes to bobby’s, her brothers will know within the hour. she has decided this means they’re best friends, and chuck is kind of pathetic and weak and can’t stop her in any meaningful way.)

(in the endverse, millie and dean aren’t on speaking terms. they’ll fight together, millie will follow him most places, but whatever was there is broken beyond repair. that’s probably because she blames him for what happened to sam, and he blames her for blaming him, and it’s a whole cycle. but in the wake of that, she’s latched onto chuck to fill the void left by sam and dean, something that’s not working. but is also the reason that when future!dean says they’re striking out to kill samifer, intent on feeding everyone into the meat grinder to do so, past!dean catches millie and chuck preparing to run in the opposite direction and not look back. i don’t think he tries to stop them.)

the point of all that being that the s5 finale happens, and millie doesn’t see any of chuck’s half of the story. doesn’t get to know what happens to him.

she just finds an empty house. she assumes it got to be too much for him. she looks for a body, and she doesn’t get to have one. she leaves.

years later, his face is staring at her across the rooms of this place that’s supposed to be her home. and millie has spent these years running in the leagues of angels and demons and leviathans, and if she knows only one thing, it’s that that’s chuck’s face. but that’s not him. not anymore. what’s inside it was not her friend. no matter what it says.

Money-Saving + Sustainability Hack

Instead of buying fabric softener, which is continual spending and not very good for the environment, let me introduce you to these fabulous little fuckers:

These are wool dryer balls. Instead of fabric softener in your wash cycle, put one or two of these into your dryer. They'll dry your clothes faster, don't come with any harmful or harsh chemicals, and only need to be replaced every few years (or roughly 1,000 loads of laundry)-- which is much longer lasting that fabric softener or drying sheets. Not only are they sustainable and non-toxic, they are safe to use for people with sensitive skin, since there are no chemicals or fragrances that can trigger agitation or allergies.

As a bonus tip-- if you would like fragrance in your laundry, just add a few drops of the essential oil of your choice to your dryer ball(s) before starting the drying cycle. And while the dryer balls are made simply of wool, you can also choose to get them in all sorts of colors, or even make your own!

Why are my two favorite party dynamics I've ever played in ones where we're playing a bunch of assholes? Like, in War Game no one in this party even REMOTELY likes each other. The best thing we've got is the twins who love each other but do not like each other, and Pallas and Odynia who think each other are the most sane people in the room. We have a Wand of Inconveniences and we spent 20+ real-life minutes bickering in-character and trying to use it on each other. When Apate bought the rest of us a present, we assumed it was a trap. Odynia slapped Adonia in session 1.

And then in Drakkenheim, the party now greets each other by flipping each other off. We also spent 20+ real-life minutes saying and writing dumb shit in every language we know (which between the entire party is MANY). Valeska was indoctrinated into thinking she cannot have friends, has no social skills whatsoever, and keeps asking people if she can experiment on them. (Carrion is no help in getting her to learn morals or social skills, either.) Carrion was betrayed by the people who were supposed to be his family (he's a bit of a feral animal, I suppose. Or more accurately a hostile stray), transforms into a mutated monster sometimes, and is plotting to kill the good and well-meaning leader of the paladin organization. Edelgard is the most approachable / least asshole-y, but she's also 19 and acts like it sometimes, and happens to be a closeted heretic.

(Part 1!) Now Wimbledon has begun, I wanted to share some of my favourite photos of Bertie playing tennis!

When he was still The Duke of York, he participated in a doubles match at Wimbledon with his mentor & friend, Louis Greig (above). Bertie was extremely anxious and asked to play on one of the outer courts, as opposed to Centre Court, to keep attention away from him. A compromise was eventually made for Court 2, where there was still a considerable crowd.

One spectator recalled that, ‘The Duke of York was very nervous and couldn’t play at all, at times lashing at the ball with his racquet…”

The Prince and Louis Greig lost the match in straight sets: 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 to Herbert Roper Barret and Arthur Gore - both considerably older and more experienced than the then 30-year-old Bertie! Some exasperated people in the crowd even yelled out that he should try playing with ‘the other hand’ (i.e. his right hand, as Bertie played tennis left handed). It is likely that his anxieties and quick temper —usually aimed at himself!— affected his game that day.

In reality, Bertie was, in fact, an extremely talented tennis player!

He had previously won the RAF doubles competition in 1920 (pictured above!) and when at White Lodge, he loved playing tennis with Elizabeth in the mornings, before breakfast.

The ladies’ Wimbledon champion, Suzanne Lenglen, watched Bertie’s match on Court 2 that day and said that, ‘with plenty of practice’ he would have ‘the makings of a champion’. Nonetheless, the whole Wimbledon experience traumatised the sensitive Duke, and he never played a game in public again.
