fanfic directors cut??? please?

send me a ⭐ and i'll give a director's commentary on one of my fics!

okay for you i'm going to talk about you've come to shake my hand, which is about sophie and the daughter that leverage redemption tells us she actually had once.

i feel like it is obvious from the fic, but i was definitely having some complicated parent feelings at the time. also i think a lot of my fics this year (maybe in general?) have been the same situation of "person B (from A's past) miraculously turns up, sees A's new life, and either realizes their own importance to A after all this time or is confronted with the reality that A has new people now who have shaped them so much"

this is why the fic was originally supposed to feature the rest of the team, fun fact! but it got too complicated and at some point i realized that i cared more about showing sophie-caring-about-astrid than astrid-realizing-sophie-has-a-team-now. cause like, astrid KNOWS sophie has a team already. astrid is worried that sophie doesn't care about HER at ALL.

the fic basically stemmed from that first scene with sterling. i was initially very entertained by the idea of sterling kind of... rolling out the welcome mat for anyone who's encountered the leverage crew and learned to tell the tale. plus, the image of sterling finding out that sophie has a secret daughter was too funny to not include.

a lot of the story revolves around sophie's imperfection, and the way it's hurt astrid. i think the fandom tends to forget about sophie's flaws, since we focus so much on how she's a (positive) foil to nate's dysfunction. but it really said something that the show introduced a daughter that sophie abandoned and i didn't question it at ALL. it felt deeply in character to me, in fact! sophie IS someone who would do that, albeit feeling guilty the whole time. sophie is frequently someone who knows what the right thing to do is, even if she doesn't do it.

then there's astrid. she's not really characterized in canon -- in fairness, i sorta use her as my questions-for-sophie-delivery-device in the fic too! but it's easy to imagine her mixed feelings about sophie Wanting To Do Right. everyone else that loves sophie is a criminal (except harry wilson, but he's enough of an adult that he can be the calm grounding that sophie herself used to provide for nate). astrid is the only one who ever really expected better.

the truth-telling mechanic was really just cause i wanted to explore more of sophie's backstory :') but also it felt very in-character! we see sophie use the truth as her love language all through canon, especially in s3 with the whole "real name" storyline. and i think astrid, who trusted her word in canon (even though she REALLY SHOULD NOT HAVE), would appreciate the idea of the exercise.

i've been thinking about this question a lot lately, because a few people have mentioned an interest in poly fic from me recently. i always really love writing good-natured ribbing between the guys, and sylus is such a fun character to write for intentionally driving others up the wall. I honestly would love to be able to write poly mc sylus caleb someday, but i'm not poly myself. I know that i could do it as an intellectual exercise, could probably write something that makes sense for the characters, the right amount of angst and insecurity and also feel-good hurt/comfort with an ultimately happy ending. but my monogamous, insecure ass wouldn't be able to put my heart into it in the same way i do in my current fics. i write fic because it feels good to engage (and wallow) in self-indulgent hurt/comfort, to explore the characters' canon traits while having the freedom to play with an mc who is like an oc to me, who is both like the mc in game and like me (to varying extents). if I wrote poly, my instinct would be to center it around mc's insecurity that sylus and caleb would love each other more than mc. personally, there's something inherently othering to me in poly relationships, because in my life i have always found that if there are three people, someone is always left a little behind despite everyone's best intentions. it just hurts my heart, no matter how irrational that may be. i know that there are poly situations where that's not the case, and people can and do successfully navigate healthy, happy poly relationships, but i think other fic writers would do a much better job, and have more fun writing that relationship for these characters than i could.

and just as a canon note, @sichore has a great post about how out of all the LIs, Sylus would be the most open to a poly relationship, and I think she's absolutely right; I can see him being open to loving caleb like mc loves caleb, because mc is the other half of his soul, and what mc wants, sylus wants. and caleb has shaped mc so much in this life--- @minniestarmj has some lovely thoughts about sylus being able to see caleb's mannerisms, how alike they are, in mc after meeting caleb for the first time. i think sylus would also empathize with caleb's ruthless, cynical attitude about other people, his dehumanization of others while only caring about mc at the expense of the entire world. caleb, on the other hand, is so traumatized, has spent his entire life with his one anchor as mc, is so possessive and protective, i find it very hard to imagine him being anything other than monogamous. he's so fear-motivated, i think that in a poly relationship he'd always be afraid that mc loves sylus more than himself, that he's always on the edge of losing her. also, sylus's dangerous lifestyle, and what it exposes mc to on occasion, would give him an aneurysm. now, all of these would be awesome things to explore in the hands of a good writer who is excited about poly relationships, but i personally just want to wrap caleb up in a blanket and have mc reassure him at every anxious thought that mc loves him, and only him, always and forever... after mc gets over being furious at his big stupid baka self about playing dead for a year.

maybe i'll get over myself someday and be able to write it, but right now, i like thinking about these guys separately, and if they appear in each others' timelines, then their interactions will be good-natured even if slightly contentious/competitive because they all love mc, after all, and i'll probably always write a tinge of longing from the LI who isn't the main focus of the fic. but that's all i can promise right now. for now, i'm content to reblog well-written poly fic and ideas from other writers, and to write my sad little angsty takes on the LIs and MC the way they are portrayed in the game--slightly jealous nutcases, who still do everything in their power to try to center mc's wants and needs despite their own hangups.

I'm going with Shin in this one because I'm not as involved in other fandoms and I don't really remember any hot takes I have in other media

Since he's such a divisive character I think there are so many opinions that are both popular and not so much that I don't know how unpopular my opinions are

Well, I think that Shin doesn't plan his revenge yet and his goal is still to survive because he cooperates with the others and hasn't done anything troublesome in the third chapter. Plus he cares about Gin. I feel like he doesn't exactly hate Sara and Keiji anymore (or at least as strongly as before) but nothing can be said with certainty. And I hope for the best (even though if he learns who Kanna was it's going to be a major problem)

Also maybe I'm cheating because I have talked about this before but I don't think that his portrayal in logic route is necessarily worse than before and also that it's not inferior to Kanna's developement. I don't know how unpopular that is but I've seen complaints about how logic route is bad as we don't get enough of Shin

Of course, Kanna is very active and could be mistaken for protagonist (and that's great! I love Kanna and I love her development!) while Shin seemingly fades to sidelines (personally, I think he wasn't completely sidelined, his arc is simply different from Kanna's), but it is not a bad thing and it makes sense. Kanna was saved due to being cherished as a person, she was loved by the cast and loved them back. Shin's sacrifice helped her understand that she had value outside of simply being useful. While in Shin's situation it's polar opposite: he doesn't really have allies (or at least he probably feels like he doesn't), he was spared to be a tool, Kanna's sacrifice in his opinion was a stupid act of naive kid. Is he supposed to thank Sara? He thinks he should at least show how much he hates her, which isn't justification for evil Joe AI but at least explains his attitude

Well, why wasn't he plotting revenge and was somewhere in the background? Because he's confused and conflicted about everything. Having already traumatised Sara he probably had at least some doubts about completing his revenge (I don't have concrete evidence that he feels guilty after evil Joe AI, but my intuition tells me he does, even if a little). Aaaand Kanna didn't want more bloodshed. Aaaand he met Midori. He has to process so many things he just follows the crowd. Kanna doesn't have such doubts in her route so she can move forward easier. Shin can't contribute as much because he doesn't have energy for that (plus he did help out, he didn't let Sara lose hope that Keiji was alive and overall he participated in discussions)

So his writing in the third chapter is good and makes sense. Emotion route and logic route are quite different but both are more or less natural in how events happen

Well, maybe I should also post opinion I haven't voiced yet: while Shin's "showing collar" sprites are hot, his CG during first main game argument (war of words? Something like that) is superior. Look at it please, it's so cool

what was their life like before, yknow, AM and whatnot? alsooo what is her relationship with AM, cause it seems really interesting!!

Before AM? Well...

She... doesn't really remember. Sara unfortunately has no memories of her life past when she "woke up." She doesn't even really remember who she is outside of their name, but this could very well not even be their real name. With no memories, all they could do was travel the world and try to survive alone. It's kinda not surprising they ended up bitter and apathetic when you learn this.

As for her relationship with AM? Complicated.

When Sara's forced to be stuck around the other survivors, they're constantly at each other's throats. They aren't the only ones she'll pick fights with; she'll gladly pick a fight with AM which leads to her getting a lot of brutal punishments. The punishments don't stop her, but they get her to be quiet for a short while.

When they're alone, away from watching eyes, it's easier. They find each other to be intriguing and tolerable, and call themselves "business partners." Aka: Sara makes everyone's life a living hell, and she's allowed to have peace sometimes. She likes to tell AM stories about what life was like on the surface. It gives him ammo to use against everyone for the most part, but also it's just... intriguing. She's an enigma, and it's intriguing to him.

He does wonder about the memories she lost before she woke up. But for some reason, he can't find them...

oh i am very curious which yttd routes did you play first :O? (mine was alice/shin <- this was literally because i was hyperfixated on alice + i was playing it with my friend who was hyperfixated on shin.)

oho... i believe my first route was true logic! (reko + shin) -- i'd pushed the fake reko, because my view on the whole 'doll v. human' thing is. well. humans will always be preferable if they're still alive, though even after death it's a shaky trail to follow. of course, while alive they can still be manipulated & gaslit into certain things, but the AIs can be changed on a very fundamental level with the intention of deceiving someone they care for (whether they mean to or not; mishima, for example, whose values weren't necessarily changed, but just shifted to see those he would've cared for as enemies), and the idea of them being so easily reset - to me - makes it more difficult to view anything you do with them as permanent. which, while that may be something worthwhile for some (sara w ytts, hiyori w shin ai...), i find scarcity to be something very important & i just hate the idea of desecrating who someone was after death. what you see as the ai will often have a very tangible effect on how you perceive the person post-mortem as well, which isn't fair to you or them, regardless of how genuine they believe they're being.

or, well. that's the gist of my thoughts on it x']

in any case! i do wish i could've kept alice alive, but this was a 'no resets' run for me & i still wouldn't have changed my answer here... sorry reko ai.

as for shin, i chose him primarily because my sister (kid) really enjoys his character & i was very intrigued in seeing where he'd go once pushed further than this. i felt terrible killing kanna for this, & realized during her death (i. started crying also <3) that if i were in this situation that i'd never be able to work w someone who enabled kanna's self-sacrificial nature. which shin evidently echoed, rendering any logic behind the choice null, ironically because i failed to take into account the emotional attachment between them all.

& of course the influence this has on ch3-1... where sara had very obviously sacrificed dolls for her allies before, it just makes it tasty...

however! as for my current routes, i think i favor true emotion (alice + kanna) -- i really wanted to know more abt alice before he died & i was surprised it was even an option so early on. i also enjoyed seeing alice getting after gashu outright + i think he deserved to have that personal chance in getting after hiyori again... even if the realization he's become a 'real murderer' (he had still pushed hiyori w intent to kill, you know...) is held against him here.

and, in terms of character development, upon reflection: i really do think i'm more interested in seeing kanna truly overcome that desire to push herself aside for others' benefit... it'd be so much more fulfilling to me, with what i'm searching out, in a game like this where pushing forward really is the only choice you can make...!!

as for both, they don't get the focus i wish they could've in ch3-1, but i nonetheless find it a more interesting route going forward, even if i still don't agree w the choice made to keep alice alive x'] the implications for sara's character in either route are really fun to consider :D

• she may fake being sick even after she's gotten better just to have you continue to take care of her, and it'll be very convincing-she's not the best actor for no reason!

• eventually drops the act because she can't bear not hugging and kissing you any longer <3

forgive me if someone already asked but who are your faves from other games ? i saw you played (even briefly) tears of themis, who was your fave ? 👀👀 also dont know if you ever played genshin but sylus and wriothesley.....i need to be sandwiched between both. they have so many similar imagery and the same mbti and it makes me go crazy

no one has asked this yet, and there's nothing to forgive even if they had. i think it's amazing that people are curious about these things from me! here i'm flinging a novel at you!

i have not played genshin, unfortunately. my only experience with hoyoverse is ToT, but I know that people really like both genshin and honkai star rail. I just have always been more gripped by the romance oriented games, with a thread of action, than vice versa. gotta watch idiots fall in love over and over again or else i get bored! but now i'm super curious about wriothesly because of your association of him with sylus. i just hardly have enough time to play lads and write, let alone play other games right now😭.

soo my fav in ToT was Vyn, with Artem as a close second. I have no idea how legal professionals actually work in China, but the contrast between how law is approached in ToT versus in the US was hilarious to me, and Artem was so sweet, the most gentle and wonderful of autistic sweethearts when you expect him to be a cold tsundere type, similar to how zayne is but artem was always even sweeter and somehow more awkward than zayne imo (until zayne's later cards/events, where now he is so, so wonderfully sweet). artem slayed me with his awkward devotion. But Vyn. So on brand for me. Deceptively genteel, poised, elegant, will destroy you with just a few words but is also willing to get his hands dirty and cut a bitch. Loved him. Was nuts about him. Biggest cunt in the world. I love complicated, morally grey characters. He was such a shitty mental health professional, bless these devs for just letting professional ethics regulations be trampled over for the sake of drama and romance. I really wanted to like Luke, but every single fucking card and event about him was about their shared childhood, revisiting childhood memories. I want to see their experiences now. I want to see them as adults falling in love with the people they are now, not just their shared history. And also his sprite made him too boyish for me, I like big mature looking men, help. They made him look like a boy when canonically he is a big muscular soldier, wtf?? I'm really hoping infold avoids the pitfall of Luke with Caleb, but it seems like infold is trying to divorce themselves from shared childhood/sibling history so hopefully they'll focus on current romantic events/experiences in Caleb's evolving storyline, as opposed to just rehashing the past over and over again. And marius was too baby for me, he's an infant, i could kill him on accident. Each character is lovely in his own right, but I always want the older, more mature dudes, and the more insane the better.

I played uh, the other Infold/Papergames game, Mr love: queen's choice (who let them get away with that shitty title????) briefly, in parallel to LaDS, but the amount of grinding to get through the story just killed me. I loved Gavin in that---also childhood friends/classmates, military/cop boy, separated for a long time, good VA. I wanted to love the shady as fuck yandere vibe scientific researcher, Lucien? I think? But his VA just ruined him for me, sounded way too creepy, luring a child in with candy kind of cringe voice acting. And Victor had all the makings to be appealing to me but was just too fucking mean to MC, no thanks, I like it when the men worship their love interest, as opposed to demeaning them, thanks.

As for other otome, I've played a few Voltage games on the Switch, literally cannot remember any LIs from them, they were so forgettable and also the repetitive demeaning of MC just makes me benafflecksmoking.jpg. I really liked Yang, who is unhinged and so fucking toxic, from Piofiore despite him being an absolute nutcase who hurts MC during sex. big turn off for me, but the route was fun and i appreciate a nutcase (as this list reveals). Same with collar x malice: love the sleepy suicidal one and the insane scientist colleague. But again, the MC's desires were trampled all over in favor of the LIs' desires, and i just don't enjoy that kind of thing to the point where I can obsess over the characters.

As for indie romance games, I have played blooming panic and though it's a short little game, I can't recommend it enough. Quest is my big, beefy sweetheart with strong daddy vibes who captures my heart every single time. i love a good devoted daddy character with a complicated, tragic past.

The only other games with romance that I have really enjoyed, with a lasting impact on me, are: Dragon age and Mass effect. Probably the only truly green flags, besides artem and sylus, that i have ever loved: kaidan alenko, pure mature, kind man, and alistair, also sweet, cure, kind but immature. I love solas from dragon age, and he's a mass murdering bitch. Love him very, very much.

As you can see, i tend to like morally questionable characters who are absolutely nuts about MC, but sometimes a green flag just thwaps me in the face and I'm a goner. see: sylus.

and oooh he LOVES you!!! he writes so many songs for you to dance along to, happily singing and strumming his little lyre while you bust a move

if anything its the both of you that are the jesters… instead of you being in a ‘jester & god’ scenario, its more of a ‘jester & jester’ thing. you tell eachother jokes, sing with eachother, etc! and after yall have fun, you lay down in the grass together and snooze :3

ZHONGLI:

you’re jester’d by him after one of the millith recommend you to him, saying many good things about you and your antics!!! he meets you in person and it goes well!!

despite his strong and gentle demeanor, he will giggle and watch you happily. in fact, he actually HELPS you pull off pranks. ranging from replacing all of venti’s sugar with salt, painting on the hull of beidou’s ship, or snatching masks from fatuus, you’re having fun alongside him sometimes!!!

he treats you super well, lavishing you with yummy treats and delicious tea. he makes a little room for you somewhere in the inn, and always makes sure you’re happy and well taken care of.

RAIDEN:

you’re jester’d by her after miss sara almost puts you in jail. thankfully, your silly demeanor and joyous attitude captivated her. so you get to go free! as long as you can provide her some entertainment sometimes.

she actually doesn’t have you entertain her that often, just kinda keeps you around like a cool rock. more often, you’ll find yourself entertaining her guards and her loyal followers instead. which is still nice!

she’ll try her best to take care of you, but ultimately ends up just plopping you in the hands of the people she trusts. she isn’t too fond of your pranks but she loves your performances, so you’re equipped with props and costumes :3

NAHIDA:

you’re jester’d by her after you were grabbed by the scruff by a forest ranger, gently being ushered back into the city like a lost cat. which you might as well be! she saw you, you told her a few jokes and gave her some candy, and she got somewhat attached

she really likes your jokes!!! simple puns only, and the occasional riddle. a lot of the time, she’d actually be telling YOU riddles! sadly they’re very hard to figure out so good luck. you get to teach her about certain jokes but you have to explain the punchlines 50% of the time

life with her is very simple, she holds you as an equal (maybe even as a sibling figure?) unlike other archons like raiden or mavuika. you entertain her, and she entertains you! like a nice equal exchange of knowledge in the form of silly jokes.

FURINA:

you’re jester’d after being caught by the guardes for breaking some obscure law, probably related to a prank you pulled. you’re dragged into court (which breaks your silly heart…), furina sees you, and VERRYY dramatically calls for a halt. she runs away with you(and neuvillette on your tail).

she treats you like a secret, not in a weird way but in a.. whispers to you to go and check out the magazine selection and sends you off like her personal little scarab. it’s very obvious you two are hanging out because BOTH of you became 10x more dramatic, but she refuses everything.

your living situation is like roommates, despite her holding some power over you. neuvillette insisted that you get a separate apartment but you both complained enough to where you got to stay hanging out. you’re like best friends!! you eat sweets together, hang out, etc. she even teaches you some of her super secret acting techniques!!!

MAVUIKA:

you’re jester’d after you become hopelessly lost in natlan, miserably jingling across the floor, and winding up in a family of saurians. she finds you all sad and weeping and ue ue ue, and takes you in like a little baby birdie.

actually, you don’t do much entertaining with her! when you do, it’s usually her trying to train you to become strong. thankfully your little kicks and sad punches don’t do much to her. so to cheer you up, she lets you tell her riddles and stories and jokes. turns out she is a SUCKER for puns.

you get to hang out in natlan wherever you want, like tossing a bird in the air and letting it fly away for a bit. your best nap spot is in a very cramped little cave, all cozied up with one blanket to make the edges less sharp. surprisingly it’s very cozy! you can even curl up above on the rocks like a lizard!!!!

TSARITSA:

you’re jester’d by her after a few fatuus find you all sad and wet in the city, jingling about and being a general disturbance to the peace (as god intended). you’re dragged all the way to the palace, to get judged. you’re not put in as a harbinger but you get to be a fool one way or another!

speaking of harbingers, they either love you or hate you. the tsaritsa will always ensure your safety from the weirdness of dottore and the edginess of signora, but you can’t help but be a little upset by them. she’ll wipe your tears and allow you to dance around the palace to help you feel better :3

you get free reign over the palace whether the harbingers like it or not. curled up on lab tables, hunched under chairs, maybe stealing a fatuu grunt’s bed, etc. and they don’t get to say anything bad about you because you’re the tsaritsa’s special little jester! pierro is still upset that you stole his cool nickname though

A/N: I’ve been meaning to write this for a while thats my bad.. gulp.. hey..

Gavi couldn’t pay attention to a singular word you were saying. Every time your mouth moved, his eyes trained onto them. He was itching for it to be over, he just wanted to..

“Pablo?” Your eyebrow quirks, using every professional bone in your body not to grin.

“Sorry, what? Can you repeat that?” He coughs, running a hand over his cheek to snap him out of his daze.

Speaking into the mic, you ask, “how are you feeling after your return?” The question was short and simple, but it was genuine when you asked it.

Gavi’s lips form a smile as he answers, “good! Great, it’s amazing, honestly. It feels good to be back on the pitch with the team.” He keeps his answers short, ready to get the interview over with, but also wanting to give you the good material to work with.

Pushing himself through the interview, it finally came to a close when you said, “thank you for your time.”

Gavi hears someone calling for his attention next, and he knows he only had a few minutes. Without thinking, he reaches forward, his hands cupping your jaw. You only had a moment to laugh before his lips crashed into yours.

The kiss was brief, no longer than ten seconds, but it was full of passion. When Gavi pulls away, he mumbles a quick, “I love you.” Before he’s being pulled to another interview.

Whoops and hollers echo off the walls as you contain yourself. Suppressing a massive smile, you turn back to the camera, “that was Pablo Gavi on his return back to the pitch.” And then you sign yourself off, motioning for the camera man to turn the camera off.
