I want to throw my two cents into the canon/fanon Sirius discourse.

Earlier today I saw a beautiful fanart of wolfstar (by @basietta 😍 thank you) as the cover of the Fleetwood Mac album, “Rumors” and I LOVE IT. As a fan of the song itself as well, it made me so happy and I completely love the idea of this being how Sirius feels about Moony. It felt so right.

This feeling of rightness was then challenged by an unbidden thought: is it really canon-Sirius behavior to dress like that or sing that song?

I want to say more than the ol’ “interpret the character how you want, fandom is supposed to be fun!” and say no, canon-Sirius as in that awful person’s and Gary Oldman’s idea of who he was portraying probably would not!

hOWEVER!

The version of Sirius that felt so right doing this still feels so true and that version of Sirius that is so real to me from consuming fanon that it doesn’t feel OOC.

This reminded me of the argument that if people want to write Sirius “like this” so bad then they should just make an OC and i thought about why that doesn’t work. It doesn’t work because my understanding of Sirius is still the same character as Gary Oldman’s. He’s been through generally the same stuff, has the same life story. But this way is just an alternate way of how a character under those circumstances would develop! And it does not feel original because I’ve developed this concept of Sirius along with hundreds (thousands?) of other fans who engage in fandom s. So it’s not original because we’ve taken the character from canon but this is the version of Sirius many of us know and love. This is a Sirius I love reading about. Language develops to serve those who use it and we in fandom know what we mean when we speak of Sirius. (generally speaking)
