WE HAVE POWER
I didn't post here about it, but we lost power during the Texas Freeze this week. It went out at 5am on Wednesday, and came back around 4:30pmish on Friday (today). So we went 60 hours without power! Without heat!
We were fine, though. We had lamps and fake candles and a camper stove, and lots of layers and blankets. We played board games & card games. And we had a power bank and our cars to charge our phones. And we didn't lose water, which is great.
I was worried about the cats, but they cuddled up with eachother, and with us, and we covered them with blankets a lot.
When the power came back on, and the heater came back on, Mr. Kelsey was literally sitting on the table w/ his face up towards the vent, lol.
Our only casualties was some food. And we had one small tree limb fall. And the bamboo in the backyard. And...I lost my Duolingo Streak...again lol.
Anyway.
Power's back. And I can work on my Most Listened Artists of January 2023 video finally lol

living in texas is insane not only because of the racism, queerphobia, & misogyny that is far too prevalent (ESPECIALLY in the government, in part due to the extreme voter suppression) but also because one time they let 250 people freeze to death all because state republicans didn't want federal regulation of the power grid. and then they just, moved on like nothing had really happened...
#sorry I was just thinking about this again like. that was insane!!!#like climate change has weakend the polar jet stream and all that leading to more extreme winter storms in texas#and yet they were warned this could happen and they did nothing!!!#i live in an area that wasn't on the texas grid but connected to the midwest grid so we made it through okay#but now we have switched to the texas grid since then because our city didn't want to fix up the old power plants or build a new one#so now every time it's really hot or cold over a large area I get an email from a state agency sayingnhey the grid might fail btw watch out!

texas republicans are sooo funny cause they’ll kill a bunch of people in a winter storm and won’t apologize for it then when those same people are dying in a heatwave they are actively removing preventative measures to keep their citizens alive

Winter in Texas
I checked my stock today, and realized the last provisioner neglected to deliver my bread. Attaining such a thing was so much easier before the fall of our civilization, but I know that the apothecary on the corner will be sympathetic to my plight.
The only unfortunate thing is that that will require me leaving our shared dwellings and leaving the others defenseless. The beasts under our care make poor guards, but let no man claim the righteousness of God if he is to abandon those who can do nothing for him.
With a heavy heart, I don my boots, my coat, second coat, hat, gloves, sling bag, shemagh and bandana to keep warm, though I neglect to bring my leg machetes. This may put me at risk of assault from the roving bands of toiletry raiders, I haven't heard explosions in more than a fortnight, and can only presume they are in their dens bandaging their wounded.
I had to navigate the icy stairwell leading up to our dwelling, which provides some defense against hostile incursions, but provides some difficulty, as I have a package to leave with the apothecary for the next courier.
When I leave through the barricades, my first notice is that there's no bodies in the street. I can only presume they've been dragged inside to add to the provisions, a detestable but necessary act in these uncertain times.
As I have only recently recovered from the plague that struck us during the festivities, I must travel slow. The past year has not been kind to my adrenal glands, and their dysfunction remains long after the plague has left me. I know that, should collapse again, the demands of my rescuers will strip us of our stockpiles, so I cannot falter.
The wildlife here has no fear of us. Bullets are expensive, and hard to come by, so the lithe little creatures know I pose no threat in my current state. I remember my early days in the wilds of Van Zandt, where the yeehaw-wald was lush with large, bountiful game.
Alas, to travel there would require more resources than I can spare, as every time I've visited during the winter months I inevitably trade some of my provisions for candy cigarettes. Though rare, the addiction still grips me, and I've yet to find candy patches to deaden the agony of withdrawal.
My trek to the apothecary passes by uneventful. Clearly, the raiders must be living well off the flesh of the dead from last year's final battle. I leave my package with the clerk, and scan the provisions for something warm that isn't coffee. I find none.
What I do find is an absolute bounty of bread that has yet to be picked clean, and in the rear of the store there's all the toilet paper one could ever eat. In my glee, I also attained a frozen treat, knowing that it will survive the walk back. I tipped my hat to the apothecary's assistant, as these dire times are no excuse to dispense with respectful pleasantries.
Upon my return, I am greeted by our tamed beasts who demand I shake their food bowl to make it new again. Then, with a final prayer for our continued survival, I huddle in the dark and consume my provisions.
God is good, and Texas has not fallen.

Well anyway. I really really fucking hate every stupid fuck who treats the south like a lost cause that should just be left to rot without giving a single shit about anyone who lives there just because they think of it as a bunch of states made up solely of a hivemind of republican politicians and not like. Places where people literally just fucking live. People'll take any opportunity to talk about how much everyone there should just be left to die or whatever. Honestly just like completely soulless behavior but people are just like "Lol i'm so quirky!!" about it. God
#I know theres bigger issues in the world in general right now this is just the one i got mad about at exactly this moment.#It'll be relevant again next time the weather gets fucked up in texas again which will be any day now this just sort of happens to us now.#I will never forget how people acted about that winter storm in 2021 that changed me.

Ice Storm Part 2.
Found more pictures that I took of the Ice Storm that hit North Texas the last week of January/First week of February.
As much as I love taking the pictures. I really do not miss ice storms. I mean, I moved from Wisconsin to Texas to mostly get away from cold winters and the nasty weather that comes with it.

We had a winter weather warning, which I promptly ignored and drove to work, because I live close and there wasn't much ice. Then this happened:
So now I'm waiting for my car to heat up so I can scrape my windshield (again) and go back home. At least right now the ice is still in pellet form and not too slippery.
And before anyone says this is nothing, I live in Dallas. We don't know how to deal with this.

How Texans experience the cold
I think I understand what “the calm before the storm,” means, it only took nearly 24 years. But I live in Texas, and we are about due for our new annual freeze, it’s supposed to happen where I am at within the next couple of days. The cold front is moving in pretty quickly and the windchill, my god the windchill. The air outside is almost reminiscent of a time when things were good, even if I can’t remember exactly when that was. It isn’t enough to sting your lungs either or even chap your lips. But the possibility of hypothermia is calling my name. She calls out to me begging me to strip naked and lay on the cold tarmac in the street. She wants me to sleep there and be at peace. But someone else is whispering my name telling me a better experience would be sipping on a bottle of whiskey out back in circle with some friends, no need for a fire either, the drink will keep us warm. Now I am left with two choices of how to enjoy this weather as before the storm rolls in… if the storm even comes. But now I understand that feeling of calmness before chaos. I just know something bad is going to happen.
