#winter weather

Just took the dogs out for the midmorning ramble. We had a short walk through the woods; more than enough for Chance, but not quite enough for Lady and Rosalie. Rosalie compensates by running large, high-speed loops around me when we're headed home; quite a wise whippet. Now I'm going to force myself to sit down with the brushes and the palette and paint Architecture.

7:45-ish looked like this. My two red spruce have died from needlecast disease. I am going to miss them so much. Especially on a winter's dawn, which used to be their prettiest moments.

Oil painting from the 90s, I hadn't painted for about ten years at that point. Busy with college, working, and home reno. Now it's a good reminder of the spruces in their prime.

COLD

Dog walks have been short today. It was -8F here this morning, the lowest temp I can remember for many years. My car was very slow to start this morning. But it finally did! The creek doesn't freeze until temps fall below 15, since it is moving, but it has a lovely display of ice and frost flowers on it today.

I'm pretty sure the ice would have held my weight, but I couldn't bear to mess up the frost flowers! They are so sparkly and perfect. Even with several inches of fresh powder, the dogs found plenty of things to sniff.

Rosalie's 'moustache' tends to collect ice crystals and give her an even more ridiculous appearance. As long as she's having fun, that's all that matters!

Sees a bird, thinks about pouncing. No, not even a whippet is fast enough to catch a songbird in tall weeds.

Hero is blanketed. Leo is bigger, fatter, and has lived in upstate New York, so he's not troubled by these low temps. His fluff is SO thick.

I converted Fahrenheit to Celsius and rounded up to the first decimal place. That's why Celsius is not a perfect seamless range, but hey didn't have to do that and it was more work so it is what it is.
