For a very long time I've excluded psionic stuff from my fantasy worldbuilding. I could just never elegantly fit psionics into the cosmology of my world. When you already have arcane, divine, and druidic magic, elementals, necromancy, infernal magic, the stars, the moon, the sun, and God knows what else, it get pretty cramped. And for me, psionics is always the first thing I drop when i am given the traditional worldbuilidng template.
But I watched a 1981 film that has changed my mind on that. Scanners.
I'm sure there's lots of bad things you can say about the film as a whole. Its acting is a bit stilted, and its pacing is a bit painful, sure. But there's this innocuous scene in the middle of the movie that has inspired a new approach for psychic individuals in my worldbuilding.
So Scanners follows the story of titular esp/telekinetic mutants as they're caught in a power struggle between two secret factions. Whatever.
Because of the ESP powers of Scanners, they are constantly hearing distorted, fragmented voices in their head. This disability makes it difficult for them to function in neurotypical society.
BUT! There's a scene where we watch a small group of Scanners connect their minds and speak to each other in a meditative state. And when they do, they're at peace.
So when Scanners meet other Scanners, they can tune their nervous systems together in a form of collaborative meditation. And when they do, they begin to attain harmony. But the more Scanners that join them, the more of their individuality they surrender to a new, collective identity. And to most Scanners, this is a pretty good deal, as their individual selves struggle to function in the outside world.
And sure, I know that psionics and collaborative brains are already often paired in fantasy settings. But most of the time, they're characterized as parasitic. They evoke themes of mind control or manipulation.
And while the Scanners can do those things, the purpose for their collaborative bonding is purely eusocial. It's to get relief from the pain they normally experience. It's to feel at peace. To be happy for once.
Remember, Scanners was made in 1981! An era where in the United States, anything communal or eusocial was associated with Soviet Russia and the evil red communism. But despite that, Scanners is one of the first times I've seen a film offer up a beneficial reason for eusocial psionics that doesn't inherently benefit some singular being at the top (i.e. elder brain). And that's so refreshing! And kind of empowering too.
I'm not sure if my point was AT ALL made clear in this little essay of sorts, but my point is that the above presentation of psychic powers in fiction has inspired me reintroducing psionics into my future worldbuilding.

Daniel's power isn't less interesting than Max's
I think telekinesis is a really fitting story element for Life is Strange 2 because, unlike Max, who’s a young adult with a somewhat clear sense of self and purpose with her own powers, Daniel is still a child figuring out what he wants to do and what he’s capable of. His power is so simple yet unpredictable in nature, so the uncertainty of his future stands out even more to the player, prompting them to guide Daniel and help him find his place in the world with his newfound abilities. Let me elaborate.
Tumblr media
Just like a child can master a range of skills—from learning new languages to playing musical instruments, or excelling in any possible sport—Daniel’s power is ridiculously versatile and it allows him to handle various tasks and challenges in countless ways: he can attack, defend, build, destroy, bend, steer, fly things around, exert control over someone's body, manipulate his environment and even perform intricate tasks like crafting or repairing. It's a power that can adapt to many situations, much like how children can grow into any role or talent they pursue. Children are born to be jacks of all trades.
In the first game, Max’s powers symbolized her struggles with insecurity and the desire to rectify past mistakes. She wanted to correct her every error, ultimately realizing that she can't and she just has to accept them like a responsible adult. In the second game, the power is a representation of a child's untapped potential and reflects the boundless possibilities of a child’s development, showing that with the right guidance, Daniel’s potential is as vast and adaptable as his power, allowing him to become anything he sets his mind to.
I really loved the part in episode 5 where Daniel used his power to build statues with Joan in Away. It's such a bittersweet moment that showcased his creativity and potential before the chaos that was about to unfold. It got me thinking that Daniel might even dream of becoming a constructor in the future. But ultimately, his path is his to forge and he has the freedom to shape his destiny however he chooses.

Psychic Girls <3
Psychic girls who send you dirty thoughts at inappropriate times to make you squirm. <3 Psychic girls who restrain you down with telekinesis when you’re being bratty. <3 Psychic girls who use illusions to enhance the experience. <3 Psychic girls who use their future sight to prepare for what you’re gonna want her to do to you next. <3 Psychic girls who mind meld with you in the aftercare. <3
Feel free to add your own ideas to what psychic girls could do to you in the tags! :3

I had telekinesis but no one beloved me. I would slam shut doors and move around stuff and everyone said it was the wind. I picked a dude up and floated him above everyone and they were all like, “Dang sure is hecking wimdy today.”
