Realized something yesterday; Undertale was a game set in a world built for tragedy and had half of the main character (Asriel, Character and Flowey) follow the path of that tragedy. The only way to properly finish the game was by rejecting that sadness that the narrative had put into the story and power through to a happy ending (true pacifist)... and Deltarune is setting up to be kind of an opposite to UT in many many ways (like the approach to the player's choices). And so far it's been working with this idea of Kris being a very heroic figure. Because that's what I assume the player wants...

So unless you played through the snowgrave/weird route with them, their best chance at breaking free, at dismantling the timeloop, is to bring a tragedy upon themselves.

(Also realized that both games have a prophecy and at least in UT we know that fulfilling it will get you the same outcome but you can do it through different means... maybe that could also be something...)

[ * You begin to see. A world surrounds you. Endless pathways and depths that seem impossible. The cold chill of the air snaps you to stand. You feel... rejuvenated in some form. Not quite healed but not hurt. The Cliffs look steep. Better to watch your step then to fall again. ]

The duo slowly wake up, brains bleary at first but then it quickly clear up.

Frisk moves around and gets up first with Flowey slowly following in suit.

Frisk: "Whoa...where in the heck did Suzy send us?? And why am I dressed so fantastically? My hair is even different too! Cool!"

Flowey: (not listening, still processing)"Ah...metal limbs and legs and... am I on the... moon?.....well this is certainly the weirdest dream I've had in a while...,"

Frisk: "I don't think this is a dream babe,"

Flowey: "Huh???"

The two teens finally turn around and both are delightfully stunned as they see each other.

Flowey/Frisk: "Oh!! Cute!!!"

Frisk: "AZZIE! Your face! Your potbot! Your outsides match your insides! AND YOU'RE EVEN MORE HANDSOME AND ATTRACTIVE!"

Flowey (giggling happily): "Am I?"

Frisk: "Hell YEAH you are! We should find a mirror for you!"

Flowey: "I'd like to see, it's changed but I still can't feel through the potbot body, I'm pretty sure I'm still a...plant,"

Frisk (softly): "...Yeah, I think you are, your face isn't furry or fluffy but still very soft, and your bangs are deceptively beautifully golden, and your potbot is very attractively shaped,"

Flowey (giggling more): "If you think I'm attractive, you should look at yourself too, you look amazing... and a thousand more words I'm going to save for later because I think the Cam took the trip with us,"

Frisk: "I think it did, we'll have to do what we do best and sneak around it,"

Frisk: "Yep, there's the Cam...but where the heck is Suzy? She was really upset, I hope she didn't get hurt,"

Flowey (observing his potbot body more): "We'll find her and oh golly! This thing really needs pants, I look naked,"

Frisk: "You look babelicious, but I understand, we'll find you some pants on the way, right now we have a monster girl to find, she's the only way back home,"

Asriel smiles and chuckles "well, you could've had me fooled...anyways... I didn't get the power I came for, but at least this trip wasn't a complete flop,"

"I'll probably come back later to see what you've done with this place, maybe, it depends if I'm allowed back,"

"Anyways, do you want to come look at the Timeline Mirror now? Or are you too busy?"

on striped shirts and the softness of common cultural signs in utdr

one of my favorite details in undertale (and i can only assume that by extension deltarune but that's less clear) is how kids - seemingly universally, regardless of if they're human or monster - wear striped shirts.

there's something soft about making sure others know this person is still just a child, that they might need help from others or protection. it's nice how monster kid assumes frisk is a child too because of their shirt and how they're not even wrong, it's not played for a joke. how sans calls them "kid" or "buddy", how undyne addresses them "brat" or "punk", because they know they're young.

there's something about this that screams of an "it takes a village" mentality that somehow transcended the human-monster war that makes me feel all fuzzy. it speaks of care, of making sure others realize the age, and thus fragility, of who they're speaking to. someone had to give a striped shirt to every child who owns it. someone cared enough to make sure others cared too. it just think that's nice.

My Lust tale. A story following a group of monsters living in a world in which humans and monsters have always coexisted side by side. Sure, everyone is above ground, but that doesn’t mean everything is easy. In this world, monsters face extreme classism, racism, and just general systemic oppression from the government. This story specifically follows the lives of a suffering but strong community of monsters doing their best to survive in a run-down city with a corrupt system not made for them.

We’ve got the aged-out foster skeleton brothers- drag queen Sans and security/accountant Pax (government name Papyrus) who co-run the hit club, Lust Tales After Dark, located on Snowed In Street.

Directly across from their building is a small rundown cafe run by the lovely Miss Toriel, and occasionally her eldest two children, biological son Asriel (15) and adopted Chara (16). She has another adopted kid, Frisk (7) that the eldest watch frequently as well. Pax and Sans (dubbed Sansy by Frisk) spend most of their off time either with the kids, running rehearsals, or working the food bank that Lust Tales After Dark and Toriels cafe run (along with several other monster owned businesses) for the unfortunate monsters and humans living on the streets in their city.

Chief of police, Asgore is what you could expect. A power hungry, corrupt, and selfish man willing to throw his own family away for the sake of success. I will reveal more about everyone’s dynamic soon enough.

Last bit….and I want you all to REALLY look me in the face and listen to every word I’m about to say.

This is a story meant to raise awareness for real life problems. I am planning on using this series to educate younger people in this fandom about safe sex practices, consent, and the wide variety of sexualities, as well as SA, domestic violence, and STD awareness. As someone who read the original comic as a young teen, it was incredibly damaging and confusing. So, this is meant to be used as a tool. A comfort. Lust and sexuality can be really really scary for some. I hope to make it less scary. More educational and lighthearted.

I feel like the four leads of Deltarune--Kris, Susie, Ralsei, and Noelle-are just. Somehow two different levels of queer-coded.

(Edit: Just to be clear: not saying any of this to disparage or insult shippers of Kralsei, Suselle, or Kriselle, I've just seen a lot of cool analysis about tropes, romance, and lack of choice in Deltarune and wanted to chime in with some of my own thoughts. If you ship any of those ships in Deltarune--fantastic! May you find a lot of content precisely to your taste.)

Like. On the one hand, if you're looking at tropes, they are very neatly set up into two romantic partnerships. Noelle is very blatantly interested in Susie, and Ralsei's feelings for Kris are often portrayed similarly. On a surface level, both pairings appear very clear. Noelle is a girl in love with another girl, while Ralsei is a very effeminate boy in love with a teen who doesn't appear to use pronouns. And a big deal isn't made of either pairing, there's nothing really in the way of Suselle or Kralsei on a societal level we've encountered so far. At least in terms of gender and sexuality. But if you look a little closer, it's kind of...'these are a very straight idea of queer ships', y'know?

Noelle and Susie are both girls, but one is very effeminately coded, anxious, uses magic, and is more traditionally cute, while they other is crass, crude, intimidating, and physically strong. Ralsei and Kris are gender-noncomforming, but Ralsei is a sweet pacifistic healer who bakes cakes while Kris uses a sword, and keeps being mistaken for a boy by much of Youtube and Reddit. The active one and the passive one, the fighter and the mage, the one with cute hobbies and the one who eats moss, the one in pants and the one in a dress.

And here, I start thinking of some posts I've seen analyzing how, in Deltarune, romance is used to explore how Kris doesn't really get choices. Kris has been cast as the leader and knight, and Ralsei has been cast as the healer and Princess, even if he is a boy. The leader often ends up with the healer. The knight often gets the princess as a happy ending. But Kris doesn't seem to like this! Their reactions to Ralsei are constantly lukewarm at best, and that's not getting into how Ralsei seems to be in love with his idea of Kris, while being very. Asriel-coded, who the game describes often as Kris' brother, in sharp contrast to how ambiguous Chara and Frisk's relationships with the Dreemurrs were.

If we and Kris reject Ralsei as a love interest, we can a different romantic partner in Noelle...but this choice has a bodycount, traumatizes Noelle, doesn't seem to leave Kris any happier, and it's still a kind of straight-coded ship. Now it's the knight being paired up with the apocalypse maiden, for the doomed codepedent toxic tragedy lovers out there. But it kinda makes sense too, right? If Kralsei is the expected RPG romance, then Kriselle would be the expected romance if there were no Dark World and Ralsei weren't an option. They're childhood friends and neighbors in a small town, their families used to be very close, Rudy is still very fond of Kris. They're even extremely angel/devil coded.

But the most interesting part is. It's implied that there IS someone that Kris is very interested in, either platonically or romantically. It's Susie. Kris never seems frightened by Susie when they're bullied by her, and rejects Noelle's offers to switch seats. They seek comfort from Susie rather than Ralsei after the Spamton fight, they call her their friend when Toriel calls, they share moss with her, they refuse to think about her during Snowgrave when Ralsei prompts them, they make it clear that out of all the people they COULD go to the Carnival with, Susie is the one they'd ACTUALLY want to choose.

And this is the part that drives me crazy. Because while Kris is so tightly controlled by genre and narrative, and those things would usually push them towards Ralsei or Noelle, and Ralsei keeps encouraging Kris to stick to the narrative. Susie is the one who refuses to be bound to the narrative. Susie is the character of Deltarune who is most unapologetically herself--and isn't that a very queer thing, refusing to be anyone but yourself despite everything? She says no thanks to the prophecy, until she comes around to it on her own terms! She makes herself and Ralsei learn to take their own actions, and drags Ralsei off to have fun with him instead of letting Kris choose who to with! She doesn't stay in her box of the damage-dealing fighter, she insists on learning Healing magic, even if she's not particularly skilled at it at first! Even Ralsei is forced to admit that it's wonderful that Susie is Susie, and not anyone else!

I think Kris likes Susie a lot. And part of it may be admiration. That while Kris is controlled by the player and the narrative and the prophecy and humanity and divorce and a dozen things outside their control, Susie refuses to ever be bound by anything. And Kris and Susie together happen to be the two more masculinely-coded party members, the two melee fighters, the two troublemakers. It honestly makes me wonder a little if Susie and Kris might be able to make their own ending beyond the bounds of gender expectations and romance expectations together? It would be cool. And I think it would make Kris very happy to break free like that.
