Today’s character of the day is: Meowth aka Nyarth (Kanto region) from Pokemon

Okay, let me use this as an excuse to ramble. I've wanted to make a post about this for ages

The answer is: sort of. Because in SM114, he had a crush on Pheromosa.

The thing is, Pheromosa is "gender-unknown". While it was probably not the intent of the showmakers to make Meowth canonically queer with this, I still believe that this is quite compelling evidence. I guess you could say they made him "accidentally canonically queer".

But while this is the most head-on evidence, its not even my favorite.

In episode BW044, Meowth has an intense crush on a male Purrloin, only to quickly retract his feelings when Purrloin tells him he is male in the end of the episode. While this episode is clearly just homophobic in nature, I still call bullshit. You really want to convince me that pokémon determine another pokémon's gender by looks alone? And not like, by smell or instinct? I firmly believe that the thing that actually made Meowth retract his feelings was the peer-pressure of the twerps starting to laugh and point at him during the gender-reveal.

Next, we have his insinuated crush on the boss. I am not going to say much on this, you know the images. James' words here confirm that it is always Meowth's imagination that we are seeing. Also, they had to cut a boss fantasy scene in DP030 in the english dub because it was too suggestive.

And I just have to add this because I ship them, sorry, but his interactions with Pikachu sometimes seem a little on the queer side as well.

So much for actual somewhat queer material. But don't get me even started on the queercoding.

The whole story of him being trapped in between the worlds of pokémon and humans feels like a very trans metaphor to me. Also the discrimination he sometimes faces, people calling him disgusting or a freak just for the way that he is. His trans voice actress Maddie Blaustein read his story as him being a human trapped inside a pokémon body, and it was the reason she decided to come out to her co-workers! If that is not transcoding, I don't know what is.

The way he sometimes has crushes on humans also feels like queercoding / bicoding to me. He literally is queer on every side of the spectrum. Can't get any queerer than that.

And last but not least, considering his amazing trans and lesbian/ bi voice actress (who even said she shipped him and Pikachu), it feels just unfair to label him as cishet. Come on, we can do better than that. It's what she would have wanted.

It's been a tough week. That's always the case for Jessie, James, and Meowth when a month winds down and the rent deadline approaches. Just a day after Jessie and James have a stress-induced fight in their cramped apartment, James receives a cruel letter from his estranged parents. How did they find him here, in what was supposed to be a safe place? It's too much all at once, and James has a full-blown panic attack—his first in years. Luckily, Jessie's there to help.

[AU where the trio have left Team Rocket and are working civilian jobs in the city. Jess + Jim are queerplatonic partners.]

Late to the party, but very sad that we won't be following Team Rocket's journey anymore. My favorite moments were the domestic found family ones.

And I know the original motto was from the Rocket org, but I like the idea they had dedicated brainstorm sessions for their silly rhymes.

Episode 70 - Meowth's ABCs

You thought Ash was finally going to get started on prepping for the Pokemon League? Nope! Everybody receives invitations to an early screening of the West Side Story film from the previous episode, and they dash off to Hollywood to attend.

Not, like, the literal Hollywood in California. A Kanto city of the same name, inspired by the city. Unfortunately, the city's fallen on hard times economically. Nobody watches movies so the film industry collapsed. Cinema is a dead art. Consequently, the WSS movie, in fact, is going to be the only film shown at the Binnes Film Festival - Which I'm suddenly realizing is probably based on the Cannes Film Festival. Huh.

Meowth takes this opportunity to reminisce about his backstory. He was a down-on-his-luck kitty who came to Hollywood on the promise of delicious food and fell in with a gang. He fell in love with another Meowth named Madonnya/Meowzie, but she wouldn't reciprocate his affections because he couldn't adorn her in diamonds like her human Trainer.

So it was that Meowth set his sights on becoming more human. He taught himself to walk upright, which doesn't seem like it should have been hard for him since the species is already bipedal according to every game sprite. And, more legitimately challenging, he taught himself to speak Japanese.

Despite the intense work he put into it, the results still failed to impress Meowzie. She called him a disgusting freak for trying to imitate humans and sent him away. Dejected, Meowth set out to become a greater evil than all humankind and spite her specifically.

(Sorry, bruh, but she pretty clearly conveyed what she wanted: To be showered in diamonds. You crushed on a rich snob and got stepped on. That's how it goes.)

But now he's back, and his old crew want to have words with him. It seems after the economy collapsed, Meowzie's Trainer released her because her tastes were too expensive. She fell in with the Meowth gang and, while Meowth initially thinks she needs rescuing, she' s actually got a sweet deal going on as the Persian leader's girlfriend. Also Meowth's still a disgusting freak who talks like a human. So.

Meowzie sucks, all things considered. But it's cool because Meowth has a new gang that respects and admires him. Jessie and James show up in the nick of time to protect their bruh and they all move on with their lives together. D'aww, it's nice when they get to be in focus.
