Kakashi gets filled in on what's happened almost immediately, so that he can spend his time running after his disaster of a team and coming up with increasingly bad excuses for why they're Like This

They wake up in the middle of the Wave mission so they have to basically go into battle without any sort of practice at being in each other's bodies

Naruto: HOW DO I TURN ON THE SHARINGAN Sasuke: Just think about the worst thing that's ever happened to you-- Sakura, why am I already tired?? Naruto: SASUKE IT'S NOT WORKING Sakura: Oh my god, Naruto, no wonder you had such bad chakra control! This is more than I had as an adult! Sasuke: Sakura, I'm dying-- (SAKURA BREAKS THE ENTIRE BRIDGE)

Anyway, Sakura-in-Naruto's body is definitely the most useful of the three in terms of combat because her chakra control transfers. All three get to keep their ~experience~ in terms of combat and jutsu (so Sakura can still do medical jutsu, Sasuke can do low-power genjutsu but can't get Sakura's body to fire/lightning jutsu very easily, etc), but jutsu involving a nature transformation that they're not used to/their current body isn't aligned with takes some practice, and obviously Sasuke and Naruto aren't used to fighting without a magic eyeball or demon fox. (Sakura is also not used to fighting without her byakugou to fall back on, but this is much less of an immediate problem for her.)

Naruto tries to send Sakura to go collect the Toad summoning contract and learn the Rasengan from Jiraiya, but she finds him peeping on a bathhouse and flips her shit, and she doesn't get anything out of it.

Sakura: JUST TEACH ME THE RASENGAN YOURSELF Naruto: You can't just learn my signature technique without months of practice-- Sakura: (gets it in about three tries because of her chakra control + overall experience with nature transformation + Naruto's body's affinity for wind) Naruto: are you kidding me

Sasuke wants to go off to Do Something About Itachi immediately but he keeps pushing Sakura's body too far and collapsing. No, he will NOT stop trying; he knows this thing will get super tough eventually. Just.... eventually, okay??

They realize they can pre-empt a lot of bad plot stuff by hunting down Obito and Zetsu, and this leads to a lot of shenanigans like "Naruto collapses out after one (1) chidori even though he still has plenty of chakra, because Naruto is simply not used to having to do anything running on low and thinks he is dying" and "Sasuke remembers some Earth/Water techniques he copied in his previous life and can get Sakura's body to do them, but unfortunately he keeps forgetting he has noodle arms" and "Sakura in Naruto's body is a fucking beast in combat, but she lacks Naruto's charisma and therefore attempts to solve the Gaara problem by Murdering Him"

Orochimaru keeps showing up to try and mark Sasuke (Naruto) and all three just sort of treat him like an annoyance and it's hurting his feelings

I think we all sometimes yearn for the days when we thought Marvel would let the Avengers be friends who all lived together and fought supervillains in between movie nights.

Though these stories weren't all written or set in 2012 post-Avengers 1 era, but they all feature that team hanging out, having fun, and supporting each other through difficulties.

Hmmmmm.......this made me wonder if I have anything that could be considered crackfic fix its on my KakaObi Rec List. Let's see.

• Akatsuki Babysitter's Club - Obito reveals himself to Kakashi after Kakashi takes in Baby Naruto and agrees to raise him together. He decides to draft some...help, however.

• Autonomy [Soulmate AU, Bodyswap] - At some point in their lives, soulmates with temporarily bodyswap with each other. This happens to Kakashi and Obito during the Land of Waves.

• Make Love Not War - Kakashi and Obito are in Kamui for a suspiciously long time during the war.

LMAO) Kamui Blues Universe [Log-in Required , Optionally Explicit] by butter_peanut - During the timeskip Kakashi trains more with his Mangenkyo than he does in canon. This results in him learning about his Kamui "roommate", which changes, well, everything.

And, finally "let's do the time warp again" by why_is_this_a_thing_now, which has two parts

• (Incomplete) To Be Given A Second Chance (God, We Didn't Ask for This) [Time-travel Fix-it] - This is a little different, but it's here for a specific reason. Relevantly, the author was unsure if it was going to be KakaObiRin or Gen but is leaning more towards Gen. In this fic, everything in canon happens, Kakashi lives to a ripe old age, and then he dies. He, Obito, and Rin spend many more years happily together in the afterlife, strengthening their bond and moving past their issues. Then they get sent back to life...on the night Rin dies. They save her and begin to change things. Obito chooses to remain a missing-nin and plans to eventually form the Akatsuki, for the purpose of keeping criminals like Hidan, Sasori, etc out of trouble. Also, Isobu (canonically) has dimension travel powers, so eventually Rin will be able to enter Kamui on her own. The reason I'm including a gen fic is because it also has a KakaObiRin AU sequel:

• (Complete) Tobi Akatsuki - The Fuckening (Tobi/Sukea) - Sukea flirts with Tobi in front of Deidara. This causes "Tobi" and "sex" to exist in his mind simultaneously...which causes him to have a complete mental breakdown. One that he will systematically drag every other member of Akatsuki in to.

I think that’s all I could find.

Rereading GOTE is making me long for more quality crackfic fix its. Its so fun and interesting and full of chaos and I love it. I hope that knowing people love the fic and are excited about it helps in some way!

Okay but naruto-in-sasuke's body could still talk no jitsu gaara because sasuke's body gets matched against gaara in the chin exams! But this time he can talk no jitsu him with the pretty privilege charisma bonus! AND Kashi can go through the agonizing experience of Naruto wanting to show up for the match On Time to meet his bff #347, the insane bloodthirsty child murderer gaara.

tbh i think naruto-in-sasuke's body would track down gaara the moment he steps foot in konoha and be like HELLO WE ARE FRIENDS NOW and gaara wouldn't give a shit but temari's first impression of sasuke was "oh he's cute <3" but now he's cute AND friendly so she's like YEAH GAARA LET'S MAKE FRIENDS. they do something deeply stupid together and no one has a good time, not even temari, who has to realize that even if he's pretty she just not into naruto's personality :(

i do think Befriending Gaara is a major goal of the chunin exams, for Naruto on a personal level and for the whole team on a "what if we didn't get invaded?" level. at first i was going to write a long scenario about them ignoring orochimaru in favor of tracking down the sand sibs in the forest of death (that's how his feelings get hurt the first time) but also he is LEADING the impeding invasion so probably they'd have to handle that differently. hmm

anyway gaara has a lot of deep-seated issues that aren't going to be solved by naruto's personality alone, and i do think naruto's talk no jutsu loses some power in this case when he's no longer a jinchuriki. also i know a lot of people are really into sasuke's pretty face giving Naruto comically OP talk no jutsu powers, but my personal favorite part of this AU is sakura being allowed to go feral and yet having 0 charisma

1. Slowburn or Love at First Sight

I live for that Victorian era aesthetic of only ever glancing at your loved one from the corner of a mirror or through a carriage for 80-something chapters and THEN, you get to see a little bit of their ankle. You’re in a situation with your “am i in love with you?” lover and they’re taking their shoes off because it’s raining and you’ve led them to the underside of thatched roof on a barn. They’re taking their shoes off, sitting over a haystack and you see the slight nibs of where the neckline of their sock bit into the skin. And then you notice how soft their ankle looks.

How blemished or unblemished, large or small, tough or tender, and you’re supposed to be looking the other way. But you’re staring at that ankle. Your fingers twitch because you want to touch and graze your touch over the skin and feel the joint buckle under your thumb. You wonder if your lover will pull their ankle away or leave it there for you to touch.

Everything about that slow burn Hell means something to me.

Just looking at what I wrote, I hope I don’t describe ankles as thoroughly as I describe hands xD

5. Hurt/Comfort or Amnesia

I’ve written a handful of hurt/comfort. Hell, I’ve written amnesia fics before. They’re both so painful in satisfying ways.

The absolutely worst pain I’ve ever felt as a fic writer was having my pairing married and then, one of them risks their life and loses their memories in the process. When that person (Dazai) woke up, the doctor came in and handed him a ring. His wedding ring. He slowly pieces together that he was married and after learning what happened to him, he feels bad for his partner. He has no recollection of who it is, but he can imagine how much pain they’re going through or maybe how much pain they will go through after learning that he has amnesia. Dazai stares at the ring, rolling it across his palm, and he sees how well-taken care of it is and how worn it is. It’s an old ring. He’s been with this person for a long time.

Dazai feels sadness and a great deal of sympathy towards the person he married. He has no idea how long they’ve been together, but he’s worried what will happen to his partner. He worries what would happen if they met. He worries he might say something and hurt them. He worries that he won’t know what to do or say. His worries sting the corner of his eyes and Dazai evens his breathing, squeezing the ring tightly. He wish he knew what happened and why he did what he did. He wish he could say sorry to the person he married. Just to apologize, say he was stupid, say he could make it up and make things right. But, Dazai knows he can’t do that. He doesn’t even know who his partner is and if he were in their shoes, he wouldn’t want to see himself either.

And so Dazai huffs and is numb across the hospital bed. Rolling his ring between his fingers and picking at the at the bandages tight around his arms and torso. When the door to his room eventually opens and he finds a visitor sliding a chair next to him, Dazai doesn’t turn to look at who it is. He just hears a voice. A quiet, gravelly voice. It makes him want to turn around, but he can’t. He doesn’t know if he can look at the person in the eye and not notice the tear stains dried against their face.

Although I’ve been experimenting with fantasy lately, modern AU is my go-to. Much easier to worldbuild. Fantasy takes forever.

The kinkiest mundane thing I can think two characters can do is snuggle with one another and affectionately talk about how the other partner doesn’t have to worry about the utility bill for this month because they’re going to take care of it. But then the partner whines and says “no, sweetheart, i’ll take care of it. you can take care of the groceries.”

Peep A: “But I want to take care of the utility bill. It’s a little high this month, right? No, let me do it.”

Peep B: “No, let me. I’ve been home a lot this month, so just let me take care of it.”

Peep A: /snuggles their partner and tries to convince them to change their mind/

Peep B: /resisting the extra snuggles/

Peep A: /pouts but relents/ “Fine, I’ll take care of the vet bill.”

Yes, this is about Mokuton!Sakura but this is in Sasuke’s pov and, oh boy, is it so interesting in his point of view. There’s not only world building but nods to real life history that makes in the (casual) history nerd in me get really excited. So far we’ve only seen Uchiha clan politics that Sasuke remembers from when his family arrived but if this is ever continued the current politics is one of the main things  I look forward too.

2.) These Moments We Take for Granted by Applepie. On ao3. Rated T. Summary: Kakashi dies to Pain’s attack and wakes up in another world. It’s a world where Kakashi hadn’t failed Obito’s final wish and sacrificed himself for Rin’s sake instead. It’s a Konoha too similar, yet so different that Kakashi can’t bear to impose. So he doesn’t – not as ‘Kakashi’, at least.

I’m dying for the next chapter of this. The cliff hanger is partially why the other reason is the story is just that good. 

3.) Yes, my weird depressed half-tree uncle by Aesoleucian. On ao3. Rated G. Summary: Sarada is such a lonely kid, and Sakura has such a dissociative disorder. Where are Sakura's parents? Where is the support? Being a single mom is hard and therefore I crafted this AU where Obito survives the war and retires to help restore his clan which he helped murder. 

A good way to get me to love any fic: let characters who go through traumatic situations actually show they’re not okay afterwards. 

4.) your skeleton will carry by theformerone. On ao3. Rated E. Summary: He doesn't want to have children for the clan that murdered his father, or for the village that let it happen.

I’m so glad the author tagged this Anti Sandaime. That tag is the reason why I found this beautiful fic. 

5.) Just the Usual Habits by Applepie. On ao3. Rated G. Summary: Sakumo has no idea where all of these habits of Kakashi's are coming from. In which five-year-old Kakashi forgets the existence of his left eye, loses his ability to lie believably, and is a little too knowledgeable about the Birds and Bees. Still, no matter what oddities went on in Kakashi's head, one thing is certain – the boy will always love his father, through thick and thin.

6.) Get Shisui by DoodlesOfTheMind. On ao3. Rated T. Summary: Get Shisui. It was a common refrain throughout the Uchiha compound, though its meaning had shifted a number of times over the years.

Both beautiful and heartbreaking.

Summary: During Iruka's first year teaching — on his own, because apparently there is a severe lack of teachers — he loses his curriculum, gets into a low-key fight with Shimura Danzo and accidentally creates an army. To be fair, none of this was planned.

8.) In Sound Judgement by NegativeAperture. On ao3. Rated T. Summary: The main question, she thinks, isn’t her chance at survival or whether she’ll stick to the plot. No, it’s whether she should change the inherently flawed system that has caused every single problem ever. Arguably, she’s in the best position to fix it. People are certainly more willing to listen to you when you threaten them with the giant fox demon in your gut. But what would the cost be? Her morals? Her humanity?

The road to hell is paved with good intentions after all. (In which a human rights lawyer is reincarnated into a world without morality, without logic, and most of all, without laws. Helping the world was easier when people weren’t ninjas.)

Even if self inserts or ocs are not your thing I still strongly suggest you read this.

9.) Mirage by xantissa. On ao3. Rated G. Summary: Can be read as stand alone. Itachi's ANBU exam through Kakashi's eyes. Kakashi knew something wasn't right with the whole thing, he just couldn't put his finger on what exactly.

10.) Catch Me (If You Can) by BasicallyAnIdiot. On ao3. Rated G. Summary: Five times the ANBU tried to catch Uzumaki Naruto (and that one time someone else did).

Why you should read this: “Knowing Naruto-kun,” Itachi interrupted from his locker as he checked his arm bracers, “If he had more than a hour, the traps were at least 2 layers deep.” He closed the locker door firmly, mask in hand, “But he can be caught.”

“Lies and hearsay.” Neko’s muffled offer came from the women’s shower area. 

“Impossible. Never happened.”

A delicate brow arched, and Itachi continued. “There is one person in the village who can successfully catch Uzumaki Naruto whenever he feels inclined to.”

Inu sat up like a shot, unheeding the bag of ice dropping to his lap with a thud. 

“Who? Is it the Commander? Hokage-sama?”

Shisui snorted, and transitioned smoothly to a new pose, “He means the only chunin in the history of chunin to turn down a full position in ANBU corps, complete with no probation and instant pay raise.”

Inu was silent for a moment. Then he declared, “I will find this chunin and make him my teacher.”

Sadly, the authors of the Konoha Mission Administration Office Employee Handbook had committed the potentially fatal oversight of not dedicating a single paragraph to the now more than hypothetical situation of your current Hokage starting a mostly one-sided screaming match with your former Hokage in front of your very desk.

The horrible, cold feeling in the pit of his stomach hasn't vanished. But, staring at the firm, unflinching expression on his captain’s face, he feels the tiniest flicker of…hope.

Sakura’s not sure where she first came by this phrase. Whether she heard it or read it, she can’t quite remember, but it stuck in her head and it stays in the back of her mind whenever Team 7 takes a mission.

When Sakura and Tenten get placed on a temporary team looking into a series of kidnappings of local village girls, Sakura is naturally worried. She doesn't want to be cannon fodder. When the mission goes to pot, Sakura and Tenten find themselves far away from home and with only each other to rely on. As it turns out being cannon fodder is the least of their worries.

26.) Once Again by pupeez4eva. On ao3. Rated T. Summary: If you asked anyone what they thought of Sasuke Uchiha, they'd say that he was cheerful, overly-hyper, and loved glitter and sweaters WAY too much.

(Mabel Pines is reborn as Sasuke Uchiha. Unsurprisingly, this changes things a lot).
