Character Writing Exercises

I was going to make this a tagging game & include my taglist, but it's pretty involved and I don't want anyone to feel pressured to do it if it's a chore/they don't want to/it's not helpful to them.

Below are some exercises I find really, really useful for pulling brand new characters out of my ass. Barring that, they're fun to do for existing characters as well!

Paint a picture of a character by describing their bedroom while they’re not in it.

Whip up a new one right now, fall back on a tried and true OC. Or a canon character; I’m not the boss of you.

Shuffle a playlist on your music player of choice. For whichever song plays, describe what you “see” with your imagination.

For those of you who struggle to “see” imagined things, just tell me what’s goin’ on in that beautiful noodle of yours. Also, please tell me the song so I can listen to it while I read this part!

Describe a character by turning out their pockets.

what has it got in its pocketses?

An abandoned and unlocked phone (or wallet, if you wanna go back a coupla decades) has been discovered in a ratty little diner bathroom. What’s in there? What does it tell us about its owner?

Think photos, payment methods, notes, messages, Internet searches, receipts, etc. If cell phones and Waffle Houses aren't things in your character's world, pretend they are.

Buck has been dating Tommy for close to four months now, and his bad leg hasn’t bothered him once in that time – at least not in Tommy’s presence. - from I'll take care of you (honey, you'll take care of me too)

Buck's in the middle of cooking dinner when there's a knock at the door. - from you're the sun to me

There’s a movie quietly playing on the TV in the bedroom, a half-eaten bowl of popcorn sitting next to Tommy, Buck plastered to his other side, as they’re propped up against the headboard. - from you're my twin flame from a past life

“Hey, you okay?” Buck bumps his shoulder against Tommy’s as they’re walking to their table, his boyfriend seeming pensive and tense. - from I'm here for whenever you need (to put it all on me) 

The first thing Buck registers as he’s slowly emerging from sleep is the warm presence along his back. - from I wanna wake up with you (and throughout the night I wanna hold you tight)

Tommy hates having to leave the bachelor party. - from It didn't take much time, forever's more than crossed my mind

In Buck's defense, he doesn’t mean to ask this question right then. - from you're my future, baby

Their date is going well, at least at the beginning. - from we don't know where this is going now (don't be afraid of heights, let me open your heart wide)

Tommy drives him home after their date. - from I wanna breathe you in

huh, I guess I start a lot with a bit of context or more of less establishing the scene? also apparently I like to start out with the name of the character whose pov it is lmao

5. we're not friends, nor have we ever been: a berena AU where they meet during residency and a hectic A&E 24h shift. multichap, finished, and technically a prequel to friends just sleep in another bed (hence the similar lyrics title)

4. get off with with you: a victuuri "missing scenes" of sorts starting when Victor has to leave Yuuri in Russia, ending with them reuniting and getting together properly (thus shattering the limbo their relationship had been in since the Beijing Kiss). multichap, finished!

3. holothurin: nsfw, levihan getting together on Ocean Day. one of my rare she/her pronouns fic for afab hange, too. i thought i was so smart for that title and yk what? i still think so. oneshot, finished!

2. it's always darkest before the dawn: this one surprisingly got some more attention recently although it's been a while (2019!!! prepandemic, my guys!!) since i wrote it. it's a post canon fix-it fic for my knights in love braime, where in short: brienne is pregnant, jaime is alive, and podrick is the GOAT. oneshot... for now? 🤭
