Character Writing Exercises

I was going to make this a tagging game & include my taglist, but it's pretty involved and I don't want anyone to feel pressured to do it if it's a chore/they don't want to/it's not helpful to them.

Below are some exercises I find really, really useful for pulling brand new characters out of my ass. Barring that, they're fun to do for existing characters as well!

Paint a picture of a character by describing their bedroom while they’re not in it.

Whip up a new one right now, fall back on a tried and true OC. Or a canon character; I’m not the boss of you.

Shuffle a playlist on your music player of choice. For whichever song plays, describe what you “see” with your imagination.

For those of you who struggle to “see” imagined things, just tell me what’s goin’ on in that beautiful noodle of yours. Also, please tell me the song so I can listen to it while I read this part!

Describe a character by turning out their pockets.

what has it got in its pocketses?

An abandoned and unlocked phone (or wallet, if you wanna go back a coupla decades) has been discovered in a ratty little diner bathroom. What’s in there? What does it tell us about its owner?

Think photos, payment methods, notes, messages, Internet searches, receipts, etc. If cell phones and Waffle Houses aren't things in your character's world, pretend they are.

There’s a movie quietly playing on the TV in the bedroom, a half-eaten bowl of popcorn sitting next to Tommy, Buck plastered to his other side, as they’re propped up against the headboard. - from you're my twin flame from a past life

“Hey, you okay?” Buck bumps his shoulder against Tommy’s as they’re walking to their table, his boyfriend seeming pensive and tense. - from I'm here for whenever you need (to put it all on me) 

The first thing Buck registers as he’s slowly emerging from sleep is the warm presence along his back. - from I wanna wake up with you (and throughout the night I wanna hold you tight)

Tommy hates having to leave the bachelor party. - from It didn't take much time, forever's more than crossed my mind

In Buck's defense, he doesn’t mean to ask this question right then. - from you're my future, baby

Their date is going well, at least at the beginning. - from we don't know where this is going now (don't be afraid of heights, let me open your heart wide)

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 untitled saltommy fic - done! 🎭 fake dating au - thank you for sending this! i finally sat down and wrote a little something! here it is now :D

Tommy spots the blonde shortly after arriving. 

Evan is sitting at the bar and making small talk with the bartender, twirling the little umbrella in the cocktail glass in front of him. He says something to the bartender who huffs a laugh and shakes his head, and Evan grins, looking a little pleased with himself. It looks like he’s flirting with the guy behind the bar. Does he even know he’s flirting with a man, or is he so far in the closet he doesn’t even know he is in it?

And God, Tommy knows what that’s like, having been there himself. He hangs back for a moment, hesitating. 

This seemed like a good idea when they were chatting behind the safety − and relevant anonymity − of a dating app, but now he’s standing here and looking at him, and he’s not sure he can go through with this. 

Maybe because Evan is actually…ridiculously hot, which Tommy knew when he messaged him, but he’s actually so much more attractive in person. The first thing Tommy notices is the pink birthmark on his eyebrow, a shade matching the pouty lips wrapped around the straw as he sips his drink. Then those long legs, shoved in a pair of incredibly tight skinny jeans that show off his ass, the way he’s sitting on the barstool, leaning forward on his elbows. Nevermind those strong arms and broad shoulders; the t-shirt he’s wearing leaves little to the imagination. 

Tommy is still standing there, caught in a daze of nerves and lust, when Evan suddenly turns his head and looks right at him, their eyes meeting for the first time, and immediately breaks into a big grin. 

He slides off the barstool and walks over. “Tommy, right?”

“Yeah,” Tommy breathes out, extending an arm for a cursory handshake. “Nice to officially meet you, Evan.”
