Natasha looks up. Tony hasn’t said a word to her since they arrived at the makeshift debriefing facility Fury’s set up in downtown Los Angeles.

“What?” she asks.

“Gloves,” Tony repeats, not looking up from his phone. “For the- what do you call them? The electro-bracelets. Happy told me what went down at Hammer’s factory.”

Natasha looks down at her wrists. “SHIELD calls them Widow’s Bites.”

Tony scoffs. “Of course they do.”

Hi, thank you for your posts, they are all very interesting and helpful! And I have a question: When was the first time Clint became a SHIELD agent?

this is a common source of confusion about 616 hawkeye for most people!

SHIELD was in clint’s periphery. shortly after he joined the avengers, natasha romanoff joined SHIELD. clint nominated her for avengers membership, but because of her status as an agent, and branding as a traitor as part of her cover, she had to decline, and broke up with clint. he later married bobbi morse, who was a longtime SHIELD agent that had only just quit shortly before they met.

also, the avengers and nick fury/SHIELD occasionally worked in tandem (though clint considered SHIELD a bit creepy). it became more and more frequent with all the marvel events in the 2000s. marvel increased its presence even more with the advent of the mcu, as the movies featured SHIELD prominently, and then really ramped up SHIELD’s presence in avengers titles in late 2011/early 2012 in anticipation of the avengers movie. they also changed clint’s costume from his mask/tunic to his current one to make him better resemble the mcu.

now i can’t remember precisely if he became “affiliated” with SHIELD at some point before this, but i know for sure he officially becomes a proxy SHIELD agent by joining the second iteration of the secret avengers (not exactly willingly), which at this point is run by SHIELD, in secret avengers vol. 2 #1.

this issue came out in february 2013 (only 1-2 comic years ago!). that means that for almost 50 years of 616 hawkeye appearances, he was not a SHIELD agent. that’s about 10-12 years in comics time, and spans clint’s entire superhero career. he only ventured into spy-work to help bobbi (starting in new avengers: the reunion, and continuing into hawkeye & mockingbird), but he doesn’t exactly like being a spy:

when acting as a spy, clint finds he needs to be more angry than he is as an avenger, more violent– and he doesn’t like to cross that line with himself. not to mention, he’s all about flair and showmanship, which aren’t exactly things secret agents are known for. in any case, i think he’s not technically considered a SHIELD agent at the moment.

mcu clint was introduced as a SHIELD agent because ultimate hawkeye was.
