I wrote this out for FB and then thought I might as well share it here as well. So if you have ADHD, are a late-diagnosed adult with ADHD, and most particular if you are a person with a uterus and/or have children, this one might be for you.

Last couple of days have been a little...weird. Let's start at the beginning. Buckle up and learn something.
As many of you already know, I have ADHD. It's a condition with a PR problem--a lot of people, often even medical professionals, have a very distorted idea of what it does, and a very limited one. For starters, it's not about parenting, or lead paint, or lack of discipline. It's genetic, *highly* heritable, starts in childhood and persists throughout life, and is a sufficiently severe disability that it comes with a decrease in life expectancy of up to 13 years. It is a visible difference that can be perceived in brain scans. These are all, at this point, well established and thoroughly attested in the scientific literature. ADHD affects up to 5% of the population and appears across cultures. It is very common.
It's not just about lack of attention--in fact, plenty of medical professionals think the name should be changed, as in fact the problem isn't the volume of attention but the way we struggle to direct it. We are motivated by interest, and struggle to properly weight future goals and consequences, specifically because they are in the future. If the robin outside the window is more immediately rewarding to our brain, we will watch that, and not the teacher. Our ability to properly weigh the consequences of that choice is negatively impacted by our own biochemistry.
We struggle with many of what are termed the "executive functions", the self management systems of the brain. Degree and presentation varies from person to person, but initiating tasks, completing tasks, staying ON task, restraining impulses, emotional regulation, and working memory are among the things impacted. My working memory is notoriously horrible. When they send you those activation codes on your phone? I often have to go back and read them out several times to enter a six digit number. I have to stop and remind myself what I'm doing between every step of my morning bathroom routine, or making tacos. Sometimes I take off my glasses to put on my contacts, reset, and reach for my pill bottles while I still can't see. My long-term memory is also affected, with my husband de facto serving as the memory-holder of the family.
Another common symptom I personally experience is "time blindness", which can mean both that you have no "internal clock" that has a clear idea of the passage of time, and that our ability to properly weight the importance of things in the future is impacted. So, for example, I can know intellectually what's coming, but it takes some really complex and exhausting antics to actually focus and work on those things if they're more than a week or sometimes even a couple days away.
Without externally imposed controls, many ADHD people flounder and fail to meet social markers of success. Estimates of how many ADHD people manage to complete college range from 5% to 15%. Again: 5% to 15%! I have failed twice myself. WITH externally imposed controls, ADHD people often have to work far harder to make their brains do what is required, and either fail and develop an image of themselves as failures (usually with plenty of external help), or keep fighting and suffer crippling burnout.
To that point, ADHD is HIGHLY comorbid with a whole range of knock-on conditions, some of which stem from the same brain patterns that give rise to the ADHD itself, and others from the trauma of living with a disability, but they include very high rates of depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia, social isolation, and addiction. I have dealt with depression, anxiety, and fibromyalgia my entire adult life. I have never ended up in the trap of self-medication but let's be real, that's partly about having supports and a healthy social environment. It's not some accomplishment I praise myself for, nor is addiction a sin I shame anyone for.
And anxiety has a very different texture to it when what you're really anxious about is the next time you fail in some catastrophic way. Lock your keys in the car. Completely space on a doctor's appointment. Go to pay for groceries and find that your wallet is next to your computer at home. Because the anxiety is not irrational fear of some generalized bad thing. These things do and will happen, regularly. Sometimes it feels like the only fix is getting good at recovering. Because no matter how many times you manage not to blow it, there's always another chance.
So, the struggle to be a reliable person, to be a consistent parent, to be a dependable life partner, is continuous. And it is so so so hard and it sometimes feels like you're not actually making any progress at all. I have tried therapy. I have tried three (or four??) different non-stimulant medications that sometimes help people. One of them DID help. ALL of them had catastrophic side effects. There were times as I was trialing these medications when I needed to be minded because I wasn't capable of taking care of anything, not even myself. Without Jacob, I don't know where I'd be. Not here. Probably in poverty, which is where he found me.
I have tried probably most organizational tools you know of. I have tried imposing schedules, all of which turned to dust and ash when the next fibromyalgia flareup or the next major life disruption happened. I don't think a new schedule has ever lasted a month before.
I HAVE felt like I'm made progress lately. I learned things that really helped my fibromyalgia, which gave me the space to work on other things--just like getting the borders of a puzzle finished. Enough things were spiraling upwards, and I think I might be cementing some gains. I have felt optimistic.
But in the meantime, I asked my doctor if, now that no less than three cardiologists have insisted my heart is Perfectly Healthy, I could finally try stimulant medications. After decades of use, Adderall, Ritalin, and a couple related stimulant drugs are still the gold standard for ADHD treatment and improve outcomes substantially for many people. And stimulants are in serious international shortage. Have been for many months. The only one she thought she could get me was Adderall. And she didn't dare try anything but the standard 30mg because nonstandard dosages would be even less attainable.
So now I'm taking Adderall. One week on 30mg, which I stopped when it was clear my function was being seriously impaired rather than improved. Reassessed with the doctor, now trying 60mg, because that's two of the pills I've already managed to obtain. It is....too much. And in some ways it fixes problems I wasn't working on, while so far making my executive function, my initiation or even *contemplation* of tasks, virtually nonexistant. Which was, of course, the thing I was trying to fix.
So yeah. When you have the context, I figure you can understand the substance of my frustration yourself. If you have children, I don't think you need my help to imagine what it would be like to know that you are unpredictable, or to see that your children are used to to you undergoing events that make you act strangely and erratically. I think just knowing that often, new medications introduce themselves by giving me a migraine, and I know this is possible when I take that first pill, is fairly self-explanatory. And so I expect you can imagine what it would be like, with all of this as a backdrop, to experience worsening of your symptoms, probably because of age-related hormonal changes. To in desperation try something you'd previously been denied. And to learn that it probably won't help.
In a week, I will either give up on Adderall for now or find a way to make it work. I'll put together the pieces yet again--at this point, possibly my strongest personal skill--and continue that upward climb as far as I can get. I'm incredibly fortunate in that regardless, I will be fed and dry and warm and loved. But right now, I feel justified in some serious dismay.

Your interview at Abbott had gone well- perfect, even. The principal of the school was full of life, and you could tell that you were going to absolutely love it here as librarian. She seemed just as thrilled that you were joining their team- apparently they havenât had a librarian for a good chunk of time.
You walk into the school on the first day of professional development dressed well- you figured it would be a good idea since Ava dressed so nicely, and you were aware that the students wore their light blue uniforms.
As you enter, youâre greeted by the principal, who tells you that the first meeting of the year will indeed be held in your space, which is entirely fine with you. Hopefully, youâll be able to meet a few of your coworkers and find the group that youâll find yourself a part of- that would be nice. First days, even first weeks and months can be daunting, and itâs always a bit easier when you find people who might be in your corner.
Youâre seated at your desk and looking over the catalogue of books you have- seeing how you can begin to organize everything (most things werenât very organized) when the rest of the faculty starts to trickle in. You smile at the few who walk in first, but it immediately becomes a bit overwhelming when more and more people start to make their way in. You find yourself to be grateful that you have your own assigned spot at your desk. They all converse and catch up on what they had done over their summers, and you donât really know how to insert yourself into any of those conversations, so you just look around and try to find anybody who might be kind to you.
As youâre people watching, a small group of teachers come in. In that group is a short younger woman, a taller black man conversing with a slightly shorter white man, and two teachers who are clearly veterans. The one is absolutely captivating with her pleather pants, heeled doc martens, and the way that her hair is curled softly and falls over her shoulders beautifully. The light pink shirt that she wears compliments her hair beautifully. You catch her take a glance over at you, and you feel a shiver run through your body as her emerald green eyes sparkle in your direction. Sheâs absolutely gorgeous.
It looks as though sheâs going to make her way over to you, but Ava cuts her off by entering the room in what you can always assume is true Ava fashion, what with the mixed groans from the rest of the staff. You stay seated at your desk and watch as the redhead takes a seat at the front table with her friends. Her eyes linger on you though throughout most of the meeting- you can feel her staring at you.Â
You snap out of your trance when you hear your name come out of the principalâs mouth. You blush bright red, but you give a gentle wave of your hand.
Ava really hypes you up, explaining that youâre the best thing thatâs come around to Abbott in quite a long time- that youâre a bad bitch with good fashion, fashion that almost competes with hers.
You see the way that the redhead rolls her eyes at that comment before looking you up and down.
The meeting drones on for a while longer before the staff is able to participate in a few different seminars or set up their classrooms.
You have your head down as everyone mills around, mingling and heading out. That is until you see a hand on your desk. When you glance up, there are those striking green eyes that were staring at you through the entirety of the meeting.
âHi?â you squeak out.
âYou the new librarian?â the redhead asks.
You nod and swallow before introducing yourself, although you know she already knows your name. âAnd you?â you ask politely.
âMelissa Schemmenti, second grade teacher,â she tells you, and you shake her hand firmly. âIâm gonna need one of the copies of the book, The Name Jar.â
You nod and smile. âI can definitely find that for you. Itâs for a beginning of the year lesson, I assume?â
âIt is,â she says shortly.
âIâll have it for you by the end of the day.â
âThank you,â the second grade teacher smiles at you.
Youâre able to locate the book relatively easily, and with a bit of exploring the school, youâre able to find the classroom that has her name on it. Sheâs in the process of writing out name tags for her students and putting them at the desks when you knock on the door gently.
She glances up at you before pushing her glasses up and off her face, resting them on the top of her head.
âJust dropping off the book you requested,â you say softly. âIs there anywhere specific you want me to put it?â
She stands up straight, rights her shirt, and gives you a genuine smile. You love to see that smile of hers.Â
âI can take it,â she says softly, and she makes her way over to you. Her hand brushes yours for about half of a second before she actually takes the book from out of your hands, and you swear you feel a rush of electricity between the two of you. âThank you.â
âOf course,â you smile right back, and she immediately wants to always see that beaming look on your face. âIf you need any other books, let me know. Iâm going to try to have the library organized by the end of September.â
When you go to get your lunch, the redhead is there, and so is your boss.
âThereâs our sexy new librarian,â Ava winks at you. You turn bright red. You know youâre⌠not the ugliest women in the world, but this is a lot. âGirl, donât act like you donât know you look like a Philly eleven in that sexy dress of yours.â
You chuckle nervously as you glance down at the dress you were done up in. You look at the other teachers, and maybe you were a bit overdressed. âHave a nice lunch, guys,â you say as you go to head back to your room.
âI ainât stayinâ in here to listen to your boring teacher talk,â Ava sighs dramatically. âBut Iâll see you all later, losers!â She winks at you again, and you can feel the blush that had begun to diminish come back in full force.
âOi,â you hear Melissa call out as youâre at the threshold of the door. âCome eat lunch with us.â
You donât notice the strange looks that your coworkers give the second grade teacher, but you smile softly.Â
âReally?â Janine asks, jaw dropped.
âOh, itâs⌠okay,â you say softly. âI wouldnât want to intrude.â
âYou ainât intruding,â the second grade teacher is adamant, so you sit down next to her.
Barbara looks confused, but she doesnât say anything at all. The teachers take their time getting to know you, and Melissaâs eyes find yours quite a few times, giving you reassuring looks and smiles.
You head out a few minutes before everyone else, and once youâre gone, Melissaâs friends look at her like sheâs got three heads.
âWhat?â the redhead asks as she sips her iced tea.
âWhen did you get all friendly to newbies?â Barbara asks.
âSeriously,â Gregory puts in. âWhen I first started, you refused to learn my name for the first month I was here.â
The second grade teacher rolls her eyes. âAnd look where we are now⌠might as well give it a shot being nice to the newcomers.â
Barbara eyes her warily, but she doesnât say anything in front of the full group. When the two of them are walking out though, they see you.
You wave quietly as you stack your things into your car to continue working on your organization, and the gorgeous teacher waves back with a smile.
You climb into your car, pull on your sunglasses, and head out.Â
âGirl, you like her,â Barbara nudges hr best friend.
Melissa rolls those green eyes of her. âYeah. Iâm the queen of England too.â
The kindergarten teacher hums, and while she doesnât say anything, she knows that her work wife has a thing for you. Itâs clear in her eyes and the way that she invited you in so sweetly.
âWell, maybe this will be good,â Barb states. âWe have a new librarian, she seems like a sweet girl, and Ava isnât making fun of her.â
âNo,â the redhead frowns. âSheâs flirting with her instead.â
âThat a problem for you?â
âShut up. Iâll see you tomorrow,â the redhead rolls her eyes as she climbs into her car.Â
The next few days of development go the same for you, organizing the many books, going through the catalogue to see what books you might be able to add to the collectionÂ
(whether that be from home or you can try to scrounge up the money to buy them at a thrift store). Melissa often appears in the library, claiming to look for a book, but most of the time she just ends up chatting with you- you donât mind one bit. You sit with them at lunch, and you quite enjoy getting to hear Melissa laugh and listen to her talk.
Ava still flirts with you everyday, and while her compliments are appreciated, you never fail to turn as red as a tomato.
When the kids start to come into the school the following week, a few of the older ones are shocked to actually have a librarian. Furthermore, they canât believe that theyâll actually have library as a special.
You begin to learn the children, and they absolutely adore you. You have quickly become one of the kidsâ favorite teachers. In the first month alone, youâve been given a ream of papersâ worth of drawings- it melts your heart. The older ones come and talk to you in the mornings before they actually have to head to class, and the little ones flock to you for hugs whenever they can. Itâs safe to say you love being here at Abbott with these kids.
Itâs also safe to say that you like most of the staff that youâre with, although youâve found yourself a part of a certain group; one with the most attractive teacher in the school: Melissa Schemmenti.
You find yourself being drawn to her presence, and sheâs drawn to you too. You spend your time with her and Barbara as often as possible, more than happy to listen to whatever the two of them are up to.Â
But with being friends with them also brings Ava around quite a bit. She is constantly looking for the two of them for advice on how to discipline and run the school. It also gives her an excuse to come flirt with you. Her comments are starting to get more and more scandalous, and sheâs practically taking off your clothes with her eyes any time sheâs talking to the three of you. You notice the way that the redhead seated next to you almost always scowls.
You almost wonder if you should go to HR for her looks and words.
âMelissa,â Barbara singsongs as the two of them are leaving lunch that day. Ava had come in and shamelessly flirted with you. âTurn that frown upside down!â
âI ainât in a mood, Barb,â the second grade teacher grumbles.
âThat face says otherwise,â the kindergarten teacher clicks her tongue. âWhen are you just going to admit the fact that you hate that Ava flirts with Y/N because you like her?!â
âI do not,â Melissa rolls her eyes. âI just think Ava needs to stop eye-fucking her anytime she sees her.â
âWhile I agree with that,â Barb sighs. âNo one gets nearly as upset with that as you do, and I think itâs because you genuinely do have feelings for her.â
Melissa bites her lip. âSo what if I do? It donât matter. Sheâs young, Iâm me. And weâre coworkers.â
âBeing her boss isnât stopping Ava from flirting with her,â Barbara points out. âCâmon. Just give it some thought.â
The redhead groans. She knows her best friend knows about her little crush on you now.
The next day, Barbara waltzes into Avaâs office.
âGirl, I wouldnât usually condone this, but you need to continue to flirt with Y/N as much as possible.â
âThat wonât be hard,â the principal laughs. âSheâs a fine piece of ass. But why?â
âMelissa has a huge thing for Y/N, and I can just tell that our little librarian has a thing for Melissa too. You know the best way to get her to confess her feelings is to make her so jealous she canât bite her tongue any longer.â
âDamn, you donât think I got a shot?â
âAva,â Barbara rubs her temples. âMight I remind you that you are in a relationship.â
âAnd?â
âAva!â
âWhat?â Ava raises her brows. âYou think I donât want to-â
âYou know what? Nevermind,â the kindergarten teacher goes to turn on her heels.
âWait!â Ava calls. âBut you really donât think I have a chance?â
âWhat I think is that Y/N is a respectful, young woman who would not want to⌠partake in the activities that you are alluding to.â
âYou never know,â the principal shrugs. âWhatâs in it for me?â
âA nice bottle of wine, and Iâll go out to the club with you the next time you tell us weâre all getting together for dinner but inevitably end up going somewhere else.â
âOh, hell yeah. But I get to pick the bottle.â
âOnly if my plan works, and Melissa and Y/N get their heads out of their asses and date.â
âYou have yourself a deal, Barb,â the principal grins before going back to scrolling through Instagram.
Avaâs flirting only gets worse from here, and she purposely does it in front of Melissa whenever she gets the chance. While Barb is naturally appalled at the things that the principal is saying to you, she knows its worth it when she can practically see the steam pouring out of her work wifeâs ears.
Itâs picture day at school, and you know youâre going to be forced to get your picture taken as much as you donât want to. So, you apply some light makeup and dress yourself in a white body suit and a flowered skirt that has a rather high slit up the side. It shows off some skin, but you know that you can always adjust the skirt if necessary so itâs not too revealing.
That was a mistake though- or at least you think it is when Ava starts commenting about you having a body that âchallenges BeyoncĂŠâ. Her eyes linger on your still sun kissed thighs as you make your way into the building. You thank her for her compliment, but you donât play into it any further than that. You make your way to the break room to drop off your lunch and make yourself another cup of coffee when you run into the redhead.
She looks absolutely stunning. Melissa really hasnât done anything special for picture day- she just always looks gorgeous to you.Â
âHey, good morning,â you say as you fall into step with her. Her eyes rake you up and down, and you feel a blush creep into your cheeks when she subconsciously licks her lips.
The two of you walk into the break room together and are sipping your coffees when the principal comes in again.
She makes an absolutely obscene comment about you and the way that your chest is comparable to that of the redheadâs, despite the fact that you hardly have any cleavage showing. That makes Melissa almost as red as her hair, but she puffs out her own chest. But then⌠she says something about the slit in your skirt and something about it looks stunning on you, but it would look better on her bedroom floor with her boyfriend.
At that comment, you suck a deep breath in and try to cover how embarrassed your feeling.
âAva!â Barbara nearly shouts.
âWell,â the principal shrugs at the deafening silence in the room. âI have to go do principal things, yâall.â
As Ava leaves the room, the kindergarten teacher gives Ava a look, but itâs almost a mildly impressed look.
You canât look at anyone, so you practically rush out of the room with your coffee.
At your sudden exit, Melissa looks furious. âI have to go do some work.â She storms off, and out of the room in order to go yell at her boss for embarrassing you in front of everyone.
âI should check on Y/N,â Barbara says softly before following your direction. She knows that those comments made you more uncomfortable than any of her others, and she knows she has to stop you from making a complaint to the HR department about the conversation that just took place.Â
âHey, sweetheart,â Barb says softly as she enters the library.
Your hands are in your head, and the red in your cheeks hasnât disappeared in the slightest.
âH-hey,â you mumble.
âDonât mind Ava,â she tells you softly. âShe used to say stuff like that to Gregory all the time, and eventually sheâll move on to someone else.â
âDoes she always do this? Shouldnât she get into trouble for that?â you ask quietly.
The kindergarten teacher waves a hand. âOur HR department never does anything but bounce the emails back to the principal of the person who sent them⌠the last time someone did that, we had a âbonding sessionâ because Janine emailed them. Itâs not even worth your time.â
âBut⌠that wasâŚâ
âA lot,â Barbara sets a gentle hand on your shoulder. âI know. But trust me on this one: it isnât worth it. And she likes you, so sheâll be willing to help you out when you need it. If you report her, sheâll only make your life that much harder. Just let her flirting die out, honey.â
You frown. âI guess⌠I need this job.â
âI know.â
âAnd I love this job.â
âWe love having you here,â the older teacher squeezes your shoulder gently. âAnd the kids- they absolutely adore you. We hope youâll decide to stay with us for a long time.â
âY-yeah.â
âAre you okay other than all of that?â
âYeah,â you say softly. âThanks for checking on me.â
âOf course, sweetheart,â Barbara smiles at you charmingly.Â
She exits, and you sigh. You should probably talk to your boss about the things that she says to and about you⌠how it makes you uncomfortable. So, with your head down and cheeks still burning, you make your way down to the office. You stop just short of the principalâs when you hear a familiar voice shouting at the woman you were going to talk to.
âAva!â the redhead storms into the office. âWhat the fuck?!â
The principal laughs. âWhat, girl?â
âWhat the hell was that? The shit you were sayinâ to Y/N in the break room? I know you usually say stuff you shouldnât, but God dammit, that was over the line!â
âAnd? Why do you care so much?â Ava asks nonchalantly. âYou jealous?â
âJealous?â Melissa glares, looking utterly confused. âWhy the hell would I be jealous of saying absolutely deplorable things to the sweet girl? Why on Godâs green Earth would I be jealous of saying the absolute truth that sheâs hot as hell?â
Ava smirks. âYou think sheâs hot?â
Fuck. Melissaâs been caught.
âYou think Y/Nâs hot?â Ava grins.
âNo!â the redhead rolls her eyes. âI just donât think you should be sayinâ shit like that to her!â
âYou think sheâs hot!â the principal singsongs. âGirl, just admit it!â
âOkay,â the redhead sighs. âIf I admit that I think sheâs hot, you canât keep saying stuff about her like this.â
âSay it,â Ava teases.
âAva,â Melissa groans.
âSay it!â
âOkay,â the second grade teacher huffs. âI think sheâs hot. I like her, and not just for her looks. Now stop talking to her and about her the way that you have been.â
âGirl,â Ava grins. âYou want me to flirt with her for you?â
âNo,â Melissa rolls her eyes. âIf and when I decide to make a move on her, I can do it on my own terms. Remember, I am a Philly eleven.â
With that, she turns on her heel and exits the office⌠only to bump into you.
Your eyes are wide, your cheeks and ears are burning, and⌠did she just admit she thinks youâre hot? The woman that youâve developed a small crush on actually has a thing for you too?
âShit.â
âUhâŚâ you nervously tuck a loose hair behind your ear.
âHow much of that did you hear?â she asks you quietly.
âI uh, have to talk to Ava,â you evade her question.
You donât give Melissa a chance to say anything else before you knock on the door and enter before closing it behind you.
By the time youâre finished with your conversation with Ava, you barely have time to run down to the library before you know the kiddos will start trickling in⌠and youâre not entirely sure you even know how to approach the situation youâve found yourself in with the redheaded teacher.
Thatâll have to wait.
But when you get to the library doors, Melissa is standing there waiting for you. She looks incredibly nervous as she taps her foot.
âMelissa,â you say softly.
She just takes your hand and pulls you into the library before taking you to your desk- which remains just out of sight from the door.
âShouldnât you be in your classroom to wait for your kids?â
âI got Janine to watch them for arrival,â she tells you. âHow much did you hear?â
âEnough,â you say softly. âYou are a Philly eleven, you know.âÂ
And then you press your lips gently to hers. She kisses you back just as softly, and you canât help but pull her in a bit closer.
But then you have to pull away. You know the older kids that come to your room will be there far too quickly, and you really donât want them to catch you kissing their old second grade teacher.
âY/N,â Melissa whispers.
âGo back to your classroom,â you say softly. âThe kids that come to me in the morning will be here soon, and I donât need rumors about the two of us going around.â
âYeah,â the redhead agrees. âThat probably wouldnât be too great.â
You hum.
âSoâŚâ she says quietly though. âIâll see you at my house tonight for dinner?â
You nod.
âItâs a date,â she promises as she squeezes your hand gently. With those words, she leaves your room just as one of your kiddos is coming in.
âHey, Serena,â you smile softly. You immediately turn on your warm teacher voice, and Melissa canât help but turn around and watch as the student comes over and embraces you.
The sunlight through the window hits you perfectly, and you look angelic.
While Melissa had initially taken a liking to you because of your looks (you might just be a Philly twelve), the heart of gold that you have is what made her really fall for you.

CARMY NEVER WANTED TO CREATE A MENU WITH SYD.
AND WHY THAT IS THE CORE THEME OF THE SHOW

PART 1: THE LIE THAT CARMY BELIEVES
So, one of the bases of creating an efficient character arc is to give the character something they want, and something they need. In the pursuit of getting what they want, the theme of the show and obstacles will show them what they need. Most of the time, they need healing from an emotional wound that prevents them from growing into the ultimate version of themselves, capable of winning the challenges of the story. I will try to explore Carmy's wound and, more importantly, the lie that created that wound.
In 'The negative trait thesaurus" by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi, it reads:
"Wounds are often kept secret from others because embedded within them is the lie-an untruth that the character believes about himself."
When I started therapy (disclaimer: this is not professional advice; I am just talking from how I interpreted all of this), I was introduced to the concept of "limiting beliefs:" lies we have told ourselves about our own nature or the nature of the world. The most difficult beliefs to leave behind are those established in our early childhoods, and we told ourselves those lies to make sense of the world, to make peace with realities we were not equipped to comprehend yet.Â
Some examples of lies people belive:
"I am too stupid to learn anything; my teacher said so" "It was my fault that I was molested." "I am a bad person for wanting a different life."
When people believe these lies, they will act accordingly, maybe attracting situations that hurt them but keeping the lie active in their lives. They may self-sabotage or create bonds with people who also believe the lie, even if it doesn't seem this way.Â
In some cases, people may develop complete personalities or behaviors to prove the lie wrong, but deep down, they still believe in the lie. Carmy falls into this last category. This is where we find the most contradictory parts of his personality, how he can act shy and insecure in some instances and appear confident and even aggressive in others.Â

THE RESENT OF A MOTHER:
We can only assume here because I think Storer is gonna let us know more about this soon, but I think I got an idea of this wound when I saw the only moment Carmy was alone with Donna on "Fishes."

I have a lot of things to say about Donna herself, but let's begin with the obvious: the conversation in this scene had little to do with the dinner itself. This was a woman stating that she felt alone and not valued, probably due to being abandoned by her husband and having to overwork herself at the beef to support her 3 kids, all while being a single mother. We don't know if this feeling of abandonment is something she has carried since childhood, but in the state of current womanhood, it wouldn't be uncommon. The work of women (especially mothers), particularly the emotional labor, is rather invisible and not valued at all.
But again, this is something she has used as fuel to resent her kids, who, at the end of the day, didn't ask to be here. Her anger has to go somewhere since she cannot direct it toward the people that ctually caused it. To get to the point:
THE BEARZATTO SYBLING DYNAMIC
Carmy said, "You are not alone; I am here with you." (This kind of comes back to telling Syd she was not alone at the end of the season.) This scene is about a kid trying to communicate to his mother that he loves her and trying desperately to connect with her, to get her to express her affection for him as well.
It tells me that growing up, he felt like he had to "earn" her affection. Donna likes to make her kids feel guilty about her unhappiness, so the kids feel that they are constantly walking on shells because they think their mother hates them, or at least that she resents them and that it is their responsibility to fix it.
In the scene, Carmy asked,
"What is so hard, Mom?"
I think what he was actually asking is, "What is so hard about being with us, to love us? What did we do to you that made you resent us this way?" He is asking because he wants to know, to finally understand. Why do you drink, Mom? Why do you yell? Why do you say such hurtful things?

When she answers, "Nobody makes things beautiful for me," you can see in his face the disconnection. He knows he can't do anything about that.
Then, a crucial part in the scene occurs when Donna calls him "Michael, " which indicates that the only one of her children who could make her feel happy was Michael, or at least that is how the other two kids felt. You can see the hurt in Carmy's eyes in the scene because this answer dismisses his effort to connect to his mother in his own right. She asks him to just leave. He offers to wait to connect with her. Then, it comes to the most chilling moment on the scene, the "we have a problem" using his full name, with resentment in every word. She hugs him while crying, kisses him, and then slaps him.
This is rejection. There is a book called "The Five Wounds of the Soul": wich are Rejection, Abandonment, Humiliation, Betrayal, and Injustice. I think Carmy's wound is rejection, for never earning his mother's love, particularly comparing himself to Michael.
Michael took responsibility for the Beef, finally giving their mom a break. It was Michael's job to make sure everyone was having a good time, to compensate for the discomfort that caused being in Donna's presence, to make sure all of them stayed as a family, which was Donna's intention, so Michael thought he had to make that happen for her. Therefore, Michael is the only one of her kids who succeeds and makes her happy. We know Donna rejects Natalie and Carmy. About Natalie, we can write another whole essay.
THE LIE THAT CARMY BELIVES
According to this scene, I think Carmy thinks that her mother didn't love him because he is not Michael; in fact, he is the most "not like Michael" someone could be. He was shy and stuttered and didn't have friends or girlfriends, comparable to Michael's ability to control every room he was in. Carmy was sensible and no macho alfa as Michael presented himself to be. Carmy left home and the family business, and both Michael and Donna expressed that they feel like he thinks he is better than them. Michael admitted later to admiring Carmy's work in Copenhagen, but Donna never did. carmy grew up having to live with the crumbles of Donna's attention that Michael left behind, wondering every day what was so wrong with him that made her reject him, and wondering what he could do to change that.
The lie that Carmy belives, could be sumarize this way:
I need to earn people's love. I need to always go the extra mile, doing the most possible at all times to earn people's love.

This all goes back to his trauma with Michael. It goes back to his career as a chef and how he became the best. He didn't need to succeed on a larger scale in the culinary industry to earn Michael's respect and love; he needed to be the best in the world, so he did that. He judges his own social abilities, comparing them to Miachae's. He left that promising career only because of Michae's death. He got the girlfriend Michael wanted for him (not saying it was the only reason, but it was there).
PART 2: WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS HAD TO DO WITH SYDNEY?

Well, what does a person who feels they always need to do the most? They do the most. I want to bring you back to the moments Carmy had to develop menu ideas with Syd on s1 and s2.
When Syd suggested items for the menu in s1, he gave her an inconclusive, not enthusiastic "maybe."


When she had to actually cook the thing for him to approve, he tried to make her feel small about it. He felt the need to remind her that she was "impatient and green," according to her previous bosses. He commented about her possibly ruining the flow by using time to cook her recipe. Yikes all around, but the core here is that he was treating her like an enemy, like competition, while she was trying to save the restaurant with what they had on hand to use the most efficient solution.

Then, when Carmy tries the dish and feels stunned by it, he has to make an ambiguous excuse on the fly and just finishes every chance of them using the recipe by saying, "is not ready yet"
And what does he do next? He goes to show the crew a recipe that is extremely complicated for the level they are operating at currentlyâthey said so themselves. I think the recipe is a variation of Donna's butter chicken recipe. To put a nail on that coffin of his intentions to earn her love and approval at the end of it all.
But why does he do all this? Because he needs to be the hero, subconsciously, he is still that small kid begging for acceptance and love; he must go the extra mile. He cannot accept Sydney's help and partnership, because that will take away from him earning what he wants on his own merit.
In S2, he seems unenthusiastic about starting the menu in the first place. Then Claire comes along, and he tries to make it work with Syd and the menu, but I think he subconsciously thanks the universe for not having to go to his core wound. That is what self-sabotage is. That is why he bailed on the food tour with Syd, using such a stupid excuse as helping somebody else move out and never mentioning it again. He never asked her what she liked or what ideas she thought of. For most of the creative process, Syd is alone, working on her own creative crisis. The menu ends up being like two recipes they made in collaboration and then all of his family's traditional recipes. It is two of Syd's recipes and the rest of Carmy's. Then, desserts Marcus did on his own. The collaboration was superficial at best.
All of this creates the core theme of the show. The Bear was once a chaotic place (like their childhood home) that needs to evolve into an efficient, peaceful place built on love, support, and mutual collaboration like a functional family should be. Sydney is the member of this found family that forces Carmy to confront his core wound and learn he can actually be good enough while still accepting help. Therapy probably will play an important part in this theme, alongside with Carmy learning there was nothing wrong with him in the first place, that earning your parent's love is not something a kid can do.

"A young entrepreneur is using 3D printers to create cheap school campuses in rural Madagascar.
It takes just $40,000 and 18 hours to build a âThinking Hut,â as theyâre called, and founder of the project Maggie Grout is aiming to get the cost even lower before handing the reins over to local professionals.
GNN previously reported on Maggie Groutâs idea in 2021 during the pandemic. It was then that she and a San Francisco architect came up with the idea of making them honeycomb-shaped so that additional modules could be added seamlessly.
And indeed, the first completed campus is called the âHoneycomb.â
Madagascar is one of the most challenging places in Africa to develop, but also the most opportune owing to a lack of any armed conflicts and a government welcoming of foreign workers.
But extreme poverty, lack of infrastructure, terrible roads, and a delicate, priceless natural ecosystem all pose challenges to anyone seeking to implement large-scale development projects.
Instead, Grout brought her 3D printers over in a single shipping container and has now printed a school in the town of Fianarantsoa, a city in south-central Madagascar with 200,000 people.
âFrom that first project, I really learned how to streamline the logistics,â Grout told Fast Company. âI learned how to put together the supply chain when thereâs not a lot of locally available materials. And then I learned how to work in harmony with the local people.â
Local people are the keyâlack of institutional presence in rural areas means that almost any economic activity has a foundation built on years of trust between community individuals. When foreigners come in, building trust is often the biggest challenge to getting a project off the ground in Madagascar.
However, from the onset, Grout said she wanted to rely on the locals as much as possible. During the first project, she learned how to best manage a team of cross-cultural partners. She used local people to install traditional windows and doors, and worked with the Madagascar Ministry of Education to bring in teachers.
âWe do think through the holistic collateral impacts of what weâre doing,â Grout says. âWeâre really just aiming to be a stepping stone for [the community] to be successful on their own⌠We donât want them to be dependent on us.â
Her long-term goal is to establish Thinking Huts in many different countries."

Less Than Three (Hongjoong x Reader)

@sorryimananti-romantic hahaha remember how I said I was the slowest writer ever? Apparently that's not true because it only took me a month and a half to write this. I need help
Content: fluff, a whole lot of delusional one-sided pining (the cute kind though) (from him), silly middle school antics from both teachers and students, betting, friends to lovers
Summary: Kim Hongjoong teaches middle school math and finds himself absolutely smitten with you, the math department's newest hire. You're the last person to find out.
Note: This is set in an American-style middle school because that's where my teaching experiences have been and I figured my best work would come out of the system I'm most familiar with

Why did Hongjoong choose middle school?
He asks himself this question every day as well
If he wanted to be a math teacher, high school was clearly a better option
But no he had started out in a middle school, promising to take a high school position as soon as one opened up
And now he was actively avoiding high school principals that wanted to recruit him
Is it because he found out the math is easier to explain and the kids really arenât that bad?
Yeah sure
But this year he had another reason to stay
See his math department had a position open up this summer and as he got to take part in interviews to select a new hire
He fell in love
Now that was not the whole reason he advocated to hire you
In fact your credentials as a math teacher
The places you had taught before
Your praxis exam scores
Your recommendation letters
The professional development programs you were a part of
Test scores from your previous classes
The way you understood math
And especially the way you believed that every student had the potential to pass your class
All of these made you the obvious choice and everyone else agreed
But he was struck several times with Cupidâs arrows throughout the interview and that absolutely did not hurt his opinion of you as a potential colleague
On this particular morning his excuse to talk to you before classes started for the day was a test for your 7th graders
Which they would be taking next Friday
Your feedback always ended up being valuable anyway so there was no need for this to be an âexcuseâ but it got to be one anyway
You were typing something up when he knocked on the open door to your classroom to announce his presence
You finished typing your sentence before you looked up, and when you saw Hongjoong leaning against the door frame with some papers in his hand, you greeted him with a smile and a wave
He wondered if it would look unprofessional if he grew out his hair to cover his ears
You looked gorgeous today (every day) and he knew there was no stopping his ears from turning bright red
âI have the unit tests for 7th,â he said, stealing a chair from a desk to sit backwards on while he talked to you
âOh good!â you replied. âIâll take a look at those and get them back to you by lunchâ
Buy lunch he thought
That sounded like an excellent idea
He should buy you lunch
He didnât say that though
âWorks for me. How was your weekend?â
And he stalled and stalled and stalled until the first bell rang and he had to get out to hall duty
At lunch he walked in again while you were putting in assignment scores and munching on some pretzel sticks
âI made a key for that new assignment we decided to add for 8th grade. Can you check answers if you get the time?â
His heart did a little flip as you covered your mouth with your hand while you finished chewing
How could you be so graceful and polite?
And your hands were so pretty wow
âYes just as soon as I finish putting these in. Andââ you turned your chair around and grabbed something from behind youâ âhere are the 7th tests from this morning. I added a couple notes on the integer operations review questions, but other than that, I think theyâre greatâ
He unfortunately did need to go and eat his own lunch and fulfill other teacherly lunchtime duties so he couldnât stall as much as this morning
But he read your notes on the way back to his classroom
And boy he could have lived in your handwriting
The pen that you used was the perfect instrument to capture every letter, every dot, every loop in a way that encapsulated your personality
And as soon as he caught himself thinking that he knew he needed to ask the home ec teacher to smack him over the head with a frying pan because wowie
He would need professional help in order to date you like a normal person at this point
Anyway he was practically skipping back after lunch because he came up with another question to ask you
There were students there so instead of using your first name he caught your attention by calling you Miss (L/N)
Which for some reason gives him more butterflies than calling you normally
This time luckily instead of giving you a new task it was a task he could do for you
âHow many copies of the activity page should I put you down for?â
âOoh good questionâ
You put your finger over your lips as you counted on your other hand and he had to actively look away and think about other things
There were students present after all
âWhich classes are you doing it with?â you ended up asking
He used the opportunity to set a hand down on your desk and lean forward in a cool pose
âIâm making the eighth graders do it but itâs extra credit for the seventhâ
âThat sounds like a good plan to me. So sixty for the eighth graders and then how many do you think I would need if itâs optional?â
Oh boy he loved it when you asked for advice
It gave him the chance to look cool and smart and he always got to play it off as the humble senior teacher
âI do half just to be safe. Plus then you have extra if you want to do it again later in the year or even next yearâ
And then your face did that thing it did when you liked a suggestion he gave
Your face lit up with your eyebrows raised and your mouth in a little âoohâ
There were students around there were students around
âOkay then sixty for the eighth graders and forty-five for seventh. A hundred and five?â
He scribbled the number down on the copy request form
âExcellent. Iâll run this down thenâ
He gave you a smile and a wave as he went to attend to his own class
Which you returned
And he was sure his heart would never physically recover from the stress it was under this year
You didnât need to know that you were the only other teacher he was sharing this particular activity page with
He would give it to the other teachers if they asked him for it but he wasnât going to go out of his way for this one because it was kind of silly and short
But he would do anything to make your first year at a new school just a little bit easier
Back in his classroom he tried to get class started when one of his eighth graders had the audacity to raise his hand and say the following:
âYou just walked back from Miss (L/N)âs class huh?â
Mr. Kim squinted suspiciously at the student
âYeahâŚwhyâ
âYouâre way nicer when you go to her class before our class startsâ
Before he had any time to figure out what that meant, the class exploded in giggles and shouts of agreement
âYeah you smile a lot more this year than you did last yearâ a girl who had had his class the previous year as well agreed
And then from the back corner
One of the notorious trouble makers stood up
Pointed his finger up at poor Mr. Kim, who was now considering taking a high school position again
And shouted âMr. Kim has a crush on Miss (L/N)!!!â
There was no longer any hope for this class
Exponent rules? Down the drain
Hongjoong was now a laughingstock
Irredeemable in front of a bunch of 13-14 year olds
So he stood with his hands clasped behind his back, lips pursed, and his eyes dangerously blank
It wasnât long before kids started shushing each other
Even once they were quiet, he held their attention for a second longer
âIf you have two to the fourth times two to the third, whatâs the product?â he asked clearly, writing the problem on the whiteboard in new black marker
Not addressing the issue would not stem the tide of curious teenagers for long but it would have to be a band-aid solution until he figured out how to do this properly
Because he couldnât allow rumors to spread that he liked you because firstly unprofessional and secondly what if you heard them and thought he was weird
But he couldnât lie and allow rumors to spread that he definitely didnât have a crush on you because firstly. unprofessional kids donât need to know about that stuff
Like they think theyâre all mature and old enough to date when they canât even drive yet like can you imagine as a teenager asking your mom to drive you to your date with your girlfriend. Embarrassing
BUT SECONDLY
What if you heard the rumors and maybe you did like him back and it crushed your heart to hear that he didnât like you
While the kids were working on their assignment and he was working on his computer he decided the best way to explain this to them
If they ever brought it up again
Was that theyâre always in a better mood when they get to talk to their friends, right?
Youâre a good friend and itâs fun working with you
The other math teachers are fun too but youâre close to his age so it makes sense that you would be closer

Literally just one day later the kids bring it up again and they do not buy his explanation
They donât even pretend to because their brains are not developed enough to have that kind of social tact
And the rumor doesnât exactly spread like wildfire around the school but everyone knows about it you know what I mean
Except you actually
Youâre usually very aware of everything going on in your classroom but somehow this particular subject escaped your attention
You learned early on that for some reason kids donât have shame anymore in spilling their guts to the classroom about what theyâre gossiping about
So the usual âif you canât wait to tell your friend later then tell the whole class nowâ classroom management tactic is now useless
So you didnât do that instead you just asked them which problem theyâre helping their friend with and if theyâre not helping their friend with math then they should get back on task
You didnât think that any middle school level gossip could actually be that interesting anyway so yeah you had no idea that kids were shipping the teachers
And you didnât want to know
So you stayed blissfully ignorant
While Hongjoong was lowkey agonizing over it
Now you and Hongjoong tend to eat lunch in your own classrooms rather than the staff lounge
Because why use up any more social energy than necessary right
But there is a vending machine in the staff room and Hongjoong was craving something sweet one day
And when he walked in the other teachers in there suddenly went awkwardly silent
And he knew
They were talking about him
Yeah he should take a high school position next year
Two of the younger teachers, Jung Wooyoung from the history department and Choi San from the phys ed department, broke the silence giggling to each other
âSorry Hongjoongâ San apologized âthe kids are just hilarious these days. Theyâre so excited about you and (Y/N) itâs adorableâ
Hongjoong gave them a look
âAdorable?â
âWell firstly youâ Wooyoung pointed out âI never thought Iâd see you fall head over heels but I totally get it. Sheâs super coolâ
âAnd secondly the kidsâ San continued âany time you guys are talking in the hall I have all of the girls talking about it during warm ups. The boys all think of you as their role model when it comes to liking a girlâ
âThat reminds me!â Wooyoung interrupted âI actually did have a boy confess to a girl in my class the other day and you wanna know what he told her??â
Hongjoongâs eyebrows furrowed in a glare, absolutely sure that his reputation was never going to recover
âHe said âI like you more than Mr. Kim likes Miss (L/N)ââ
The teachers tried to tone down their laughter out of respect
Hongjoong wanted to leave immediately but this stupid vending machine was having issues
âAnd then you know what she said back?â
Wooyoung was having trouble holding himself together
His eyes were shining a little with tears of laughter
âShe said âThatâs impossible. No one can like anyone more than Mr. Kim likes Miss (L/N)ââ
The other teachers could not hold it back anymore
The vending machine finally gave Hongjoong his candy bar
(Plus the extra one he bought for you)
So he made his way swiftly back towards the door
âOh no no waitâ Wooyoung called after him
âTests to gradeâ Hongjoong lied simply
âNo come on you have to hear thisâ
Hongjoong stopped at the door, fighting the urge to classroom manage his coworkers
He looked back both unimpressed and expectant at the same time
âOkay everyone raise your hands if you betted on before Christmas breakâ Wooyoung called out
Some of the teachers looked at him like he had just asked out a widow at her husbandâs funeral
But they raised their hands sheepishly anyway
âGreat yes and after Christmas break?â
The other half raised their hands, most of them looking like they wished that had eaten lunch in their own classrooms
âThese are bets on when youâre going to ask her outâ Wooyoung explained cheerfully
âWasnât someone also trying to get bets going on whether you would confess first or she would notice first?â San asked
âThat was also meâ Wooyoung said with a grin
The lounge door opened again and in walked the principal and one of the vice principals
Hongjoong thought this was finally the end to this stupid conversation
But no
âOh Hongjoong!â the principal greeted him with a pat on the arm âIâve got $50 on you dating before Christmas. Donât let me downâ
Waiting until the end of the school year to take a new position would simply not be soon enough
Hongjoong needed to find a new job or retire within the month
But then on the way back to his classroom he remembered he had an extra candy bar for you
So he made a detour
But what greeted him was a closed door with the window on the door covered
He hadnât ever seen your door shut like this before so he wasnât sure what it meant exactly
Maybe you went out to lunch today?
Then he could just nab one of your sticky notes and leave the candy bar on your desk with a positive message
He would rather give it to you himself, but the idea of you finding the candy bar on your desk later made his chest feel all warm and cozy so it was fine
Your door was unlocked, so he pulled it open just enough so he could see inside
And you were in there actually
Slumped in your desk chair with your head in your hands
Oh
Oh no
Hongjoong had been there before
Every teacher had been there before
The work of a teacher isnât as easy as most people would like to believe
Especially for middle school, and even more so for math, it takes someone with unending patience and courage to help kids learn every day
And some days that patience and courage runs a little thinner than other days
Even experienced teachers wonder from time to time if itâs worth the soul that they give to their classes
The classes that seem sometimes not to notice one way or the other if youâre teaching or not
You hadnât noticed that you werenât quite alone anymore, so that left Hongjoong with a choice to make
Did he let you have this moment to yourself?
Or did he try to help you through it?
He closed the door as softly as he could
And then he gave a little knock to give you some privacy and some time to gather yourself
Then he opened the door and stepped halfway through
âThe vending machine spat out two candy bars instead of oneâ he lied with a grin, holding up the extra candy bar and wiggling it between his fingers
You had sat up and were resting your chin on your hand curiously
But there was definitely a downtrodden aura about you that he couldnât miss
âThatâs pretty lucky,â you replied
He took that as permission to enter and on his way to your desk he snagged his usual chair to sit backwards on
âHowâs today going so far?â he asked as if he knew nothing, setting the candy bar down on top of your closed computer
âOh, you know,â you sighed
He chuckled, opening his candy bar, not making eye contact with you to relieve some pressure for you to keep up an act
âThat good, huh?â
You laughed in return
âJust got my butt kicked by a bunch of seventh graders, so yeah, itâs kind of whatever right nowâ
Ah the teacher equivalent of âI want to quit my job and hide in my bed for the rest of my lifeâ
âOh, yep, Iâve been there more than onceâ he said with a nod âand sometimes thereâs really nothing you could have done better, you know? Kids are just like that sometimes. It makes me glad Iâm not an elementary school teacherâ
âOh my word yesâ you agreed, finally picking up the candy bar âat least I can kick these gremlins out after 45 minutes and I donât have to see them again until the next day. I canât imagine being with the same class all dayâ
Did Hongjoong end up squandering his entire eating time just to talk with you and make sure you felt better?
Yes
He would have to sneak bites of his sandwich in between activities during his afternoon classes
But like it wasnât the first time heâd had to do that and heaven knew it wouldnât be the last
At least he had a good reason today instead of something stupid like he was lost in the test grading sauce and forgot to eat
He proceeded to get his butt kicked by his afternoon classes because he couldnât wipe his lovefool smile off his face
But it was okay because once again it wasnât the first time and heaven knew it wouldnât be the last
Not long after came the hallowed and hated teacher inservice day
Professional development day
Both a huge waste of time and a relaxing little work day
The administrators usually planned a series of workshops for the morning that all looked. well. kind of stupid but it was all planned with good intention
Then it was lunch time
And then after that you had until the end of contract hours to do whatever pretty much
The math department liked to go to lunch together and then have a really productive planning meeting until people got bored and then it was individual prep time pretty much
Mostly it was just kinda nice to be at school without kids there
This year was no exception to all of this
But Mr. Principal had $50 on the line and decided to play matchmaker about it
For each of the workshops the teachers were split into groups
And you and Hongjoong had been placed together every single time
Somehow you genuinely thought it was just good luck
Hongjoong was hyperaware of every other teacher looking and pointing and giggling and you were so peacefully oblivious to it
The first workshop was about medical emergency training, specifically training teachers in case of allergy or diabetic emergencies
As soon as the nurse finished with the epipen instructions you leaned over to Hongjoong and whispered âlike this?âÂ
And stabbed him with the fake epipen right in the thigh
Hongjoong swore he was going to die right then and there because why was that so attractive???
âFourâŚfiveâŚsixâŚsevenâŚeightâŚâ you counted out, holding the epipen in place for the full ten seconds
And like a good patient he sat like a statue because his circuits were absolutely fried
You glanced up at his face and your expression immediately dropped
You checked the epipen all over to make sure it was just a trainer
(It was)
âHongjoong are you okay?? Your face is all red did I do something wrong?â you worried
He unfroze and tried to undo the damage of his Little Moment but the nurse was already over at the table taking a closer look at him after dismissing the rest of the teachers to practice
She looked at you and then at Hongjoong and then at you again and back at Hongjoong and a funny look of understanding came over her face
âAre you Mr. Kim the math teacherâ she asked
He nodded awkwardly
âAnd are you Miss (L/N) the math teacherâ she asked
âYes?â you answered
She patted Hongjoong on the shoulder
âHeâll be fine in a minute or soâ she reassured you, glancing up and away somewhere else
You both followed her gaze over to the principal, who gave her a bright smile and a thumbs up
Which looked innocuous enough to the untrained eye
But to Hongjoong this was just another in a long list of embarrassments
The principal had told the guest workshop speakers about him
And he had been spotted that easily
After that was administration-provided snack time
Hongjoong offered to grab sodas if you would grab chips and stuff
And at the soda table he was greeted by Wooyoung and San, who called him affectionately Mr. Traffic Light
Hongjoong resisted the urge to react publicly
Even though there were no children around he refused to allow himself to be caught cursing them out
But he brainstormed violently about the ways he could get back at them without getting caught
Truly his middle school teacher powers of ignoring were activated because those two were practically dancing around him trading one-liner after one-liner and Hongjoong paid them no mind
Until he realized they were following him back to the table where he was sitting with you
He did not need them teasing him around you so he tried to shoo them off
But Wooyoung gleefully turned his attention up to the projector screen where the groupings for the next workshop were displayed
Truly your presence was the only saving grace this day had to offer
They were in this group with you two
The computer teacher/school tech support guy was leading this workshop and he was showcasing how one might use ai in their classroom
And all four of you were totally zoned out because firstly ai in a math classroom?? For what
Chat bots are notoriously bad at math
Ai in Sanâs gymnasium? Once again no practical application
And Wooyoung honestly just wasnât that interested because none of you were listening so he didnât feel like he had to either
So he decided flirting with you was more fun
Just to make Hongjoong mad
But for all of his whispered pick up lines and compliments you had approximately the same response as to this ai workshop:
Playing gamepigeon with Hongjoong under the table
(Which Hongjoong had initiated by the way)
(And you had perpetuated after destroying him at the mini golf game)
Aka you ignored Wooyoung pretty well
So Hongjoong got to glare over at him with the peace of mind that your attention was fully his right then
San tapped your shoulder and asked for your number
Which you gave him a little too easily for Hongjoongâs continued peace of mind
But then San just made a group chat for the four of you to play uno together for the remainder of the workshop
So Hongjoong decided that actually this setup wasnât so bad
The last workshop was unfortunately much more important so the four of you couldnât continue slacking off
The principal was running this one and it was genuinely for the betterment of the school environment
Plus San and Wooyoung were sent off to other groups
So it was the two of you and a few other senior teachers that were going to have a discussion about one of the behavior initiatives that the school was trying out
You were the only two math teachers in the group, so when the principal passed out data that had been collected about this behavior initiative, the other teachers sort of automatically passed the papers to you
(And the science teachers in the group but thatâs irrelevant)
There was only one copy of each dataset, so that meant you got to share
And that meant that you got to scoot your chairs close together to look at the paper at the same time
And even better the text was kind of small so you had to bring the papers close to your faces to read them
So the two of you were shoulder to shoulder
Practically cheek to cheek, your heads almost touching
To read this data and explain it to the less number-savvy teachers
Today was actually pretty fantastic so far, Hongjoong thought
He also wondered if you could physically feel the heat coming off of his face but that was not something he was going to let bother him right then
He was going to live in the moment
And perhaps thank the principal later
After a surprisingly productive and insightful discussion
It was finally ~lunch time~
The math department gathered up in the department headâs classroom to decide which of the nearby restaurants to choose to go to
And no one could agree
Not a single person was feeling like eating the same thing
Except Hongjoong he was agreeing with whatever you said
Not just because he wanted you to have your way but because whatever you said sounded good to him too
Maybe it sounded good because you said it but nonetheless
And then the department head said the following fateful words:
âHow about you two just go ahead and weâll try to decide on something for the rest of us
Hongjoong was suspicious right then and there that this was a setup
The department head probably had money on Before Christmas
But Hongjoong was absolutely not going to let this opportunity slip through his fingers
âIâm cool with thatâ you answered before Hongjoong could gather his thoughts enough to say anything
Then you turned to him
âI need to go grab my purse from my classroom. Do you need anything from yours?â
âOh, yeah, just my walletâ he answered totally on autopilot
You stopped by your classroom first and then his since his was closer to the front of the school
He was so excited to finally realize that dream of his from a few weeks back
He was gonna buy you lunch
And not only that it was just the two of you going out to lunch
It didnât matter that this wasnât a date
Or that technically you were just gonna buy food and eat it back at school
It was special to him to go somewhere with just youÂ
That wasnât school
Seriously he was so happy he couldnât stop smiling when he told the cashier that your orders were together and he was going to pay
You kinda elbowed him and told him he didnât have to do that
But he just shrugged and turned his smile on you
âBut I wanted toâ he replied
You accepted that
âItâs on me next timeâ you promised
And oh man he could have died right there he felt so complete
Except if he died then there would be no next time
But you were saying next time and it made him think that wow yeah this would happen again
You meant if it ever happened again but he was determined that it was a certain for the future
Because even if it didnât happen by chance then he would make it happen himself
When you got back to the school the rest of the math department was gone so you started eating without them
And that was a magical moment of peace too
Just the two of you
No one around to tease Hongjoong
He could almost pretend you were just normal friends and he wasnât head over heels for you
Then the rest of the department came back and they all had food from the same restaurant
So Hongjoong had been right to be suspicious earlier
It was most definitely a setup to get the two of you by yourselves
And he liked it so he wasnât going to complain about it
Even though it was embarrassing
Well as fun as professional development day ended up being
Parent teacher conferences were not
Hongjoong was looking forward to more Mr. Principal shenanigans
Like maybe when all the teachers were in the gym yours and his table could be next to each other
And he could talk to you when neither of you had any parents
And when the night was wrapping up
And he could walk you out to your car because it was dark
And maybe treat you to dinner because the school-provided food wasnât usually that great
But no
None of that could happen
Because someone had decided to have teachers stay in their classrooms for conferences this year
The parents would have the wonderful opportunity to get lost in their childâs school trying to find all of their classes
What a joke
They were probably going to get so many complaints they would switch it back to normal next semester
But the one time Hongjoong was looking forward to parent teacher conferences
Of course
Was the one time they had to switch it up
The one silver lining in this was the teachers complaining about it together
Hongjoongâs favorite email he had ever received was now from Wooyoung
Who was replying to the email notifying teachers of the different setup this year but just to Hongjoong
In all lowercase:
âhey loverboy u see this crap
math teacher romancephobic fr smhâ
And then with his full professional email signature at the bottom
This precious email was moved to Hongjoongâs funny emails folder, which was usually reserved for unhinged student emails
He did not reply to it
San and the other phys ed teachers were joking about how nice it would be to have the gym to themselves for once but they were in agreement that this probably wouldnât last
Of course the math department had tests scheduled across all the grades right before conferences
Which of course left everyone grading like crazy
And of course the kids trashed the classrooms the day before
And of course the head janitor ended up getting sick
So it was up to the teachers to make sure their classrooms didnât look like trash
Even though they had 150+ tests to grade and a pile of late work to grade
And they had 24 hours (7 of which were going to be spent teaching, and hopefully 7-8 would be spent sleeping) to make this all work before parents started showing up at 4 oâclock tomorrow afternoon
What a time this was going to be
So Hongjoong picked up his pile of tests and went to your classroom
Predictably you were grading tests
He stole a student desk and moved it close to your desk
âWhich tests are you working on?â he asked
âEighthâ you replied, not looking up from the test you were currently grading
âHow does this soundâ he began âIâll take your seventh and you take my eighth so we donât have to switch answer keys?â
Still barely looking up, you handed him three binder-clipped stacks of paper
âAs long as you donât mind working to musicâ you replied, your eyebrows raising as a little smile played on your lips
He took your tests and handed you his eighth grade tests
(This worked out nicely as you both had three classes of seventh and two classes of eighth. He was tricking you into letting him take the heavier load ohoho so sneaky)
(He was just lucky you were grading eighth instead of seventh first)
âDonât mind?â he snickered, uncapping his favorite felt-tip grading pen âIâd prefer itâ
And thatâs how speed grading turned into karaoke
Grading went almost certainly slower than it would have if you had worked alone but it was way more fun this way
Of course he ended up with sixty some more tests to grade than you
So when you finished you left for a bit and came back with snacks
As well as his pile of late work
He tried to protest but no no
âYouâre not nearly as sneaky as you think you are Mr. Kimâ you teased him âYou thought you could fool a math teacher into thinking we had an equal workload here?â
âThat wasnât the pointâ he whined, trying to put the cap back on his pen and inking his finger instead
âThen what was the point?â
I love you thatâs the point
But what was the point actually
What was a point he could believably tell you without giving himself away
âJustâŚbecauseâ he said convincingly, shrugging his shoulders and settling back into his tests âYou look stressed these days. Wanted to do something nice I guessâ
You brandished his late work stack again
âSo Iâm going to do something nice tooâ
Yeah he probably wouldnât ever feel this way about anyone ever again
For him at this point it was you or nothing
But the problem was he was willing to let it be nothing for far too long

A little known fact about teachers is that they became teachers because they donât know how/donât want to talk with other adults
Kids donât judge you if something comes out of your mouth a little different than you meant it
Other adults are mean and judge you over silly things
This unfortunately meant that he didnât know how to ask you to go to dinner with him without making it sound like a date
He was kinda just hoping a lil Kdrama moment would happen and one of your stomachs would rumble really loud so he could laugh it off and say you should go eat together
But you got closer and closer to your car and no tummy rumbling

He could have slapped his own mouth
You were a little startled but it stopped you from getting in your car
âHmm?â

âWanna what?â you asked

âGo grab dinner? Or something?â he finally spat out
He must not have seen your face light up in the dark
âNo pressureâ he added when you didnât answer within 0.05 seconds
âNo that sounds great! I was thinking of grabbing something on the way home anyway and it would be way more fun to do it with someone elseâ you accepted
He let you pick the place again and you drove separately because after you would be going in different directions
But it ended up being a nice little fast casual restaurant
And it didnât feel like a date really but it kinda felt like a date but no it didnât
It just ended up being a comfortable little outing between friends
Hongjoong knew he couldnât stop smiling
And he wondered if you already knew how he felt about you
He was sure he didnât smile like this at anyone else
And you were many things but dense couldnât possibly be one of them
He knew he was the opposite of subtle
But if you were willing to spend time with him like this then that meant he didnât make you uncomfortable
Honestly he was so used to the way you made him feel at this point that loving you from afar felt like second nature
Being friends with you was enough if he could keep loving you like this
The waiter came by and asked if it was one check or two
And Hongjoong was fully prepared to pay once again
But you beat him to it
You were already prepared with your card and everything
âI owe you for last time, remember?â you told him with a cheeky grin
He shook his head
âYou donât owe me anythingâ
âWell then next time itâs on youâ
Hongjoong started to smile again
âNext time?â
âWell, yeahâ you said with a shrug, now a little bashful âThis was fun. We should keep doing itâ
âIt is funâ he agreed with a laugh âItâs nice to hang out with people outside of school for onceâ
You laughed at that
âOh boy tell me about it. Nobody told me that teaching would ruin my social lifeâ
And things just kind of continued like that for a while
Before you had come to the school, Hongjoong had lowkey felt like he was kind of going nowhere with his life
Any time he spent at school outside of his contract hours felt like an infringement on his personal time
Or not even at school, just away from home
He had been hoping that taking a high school position would give him back a little bit of the passion for teaching that he was losing
He hadnât even been teaching that long itâs just that the profession really is like that
Indescribably rewarding and incredibly draining all at the same time
(Especially these days. Sometimes you really wonder if itâs worth it)
But having something to look forward to every day besides a favorite class ended up being what he needed to love his job wholeheartedly again
It wasnât just you he had fallen in love with
He had also found new friends in an unlikely place
The math department was like family and he enjoyed their company dearly
But that weirdo phys ed teacher and obnoxious history teacher had turned into excellent friends frighteningly fast
Sometimes they joined you and Hongjoong on your dinner outings
And honestly it was such a blast
An amendment to my previous statement about teachers being teachers because they donât like talking to other adults:
Other teachers often do not count as other adults
Sometimes they do when you have to have grown up conversations
But gossiping about students does not count as grown up conversation
There were some eighth graders that all four of you had
Hongjoong not currently but heâd had them for previous classes and they were now in your class
Was it a little embarrassing as 20 somethings to have your main source of gossip be preteens?
Yeah but oh man there is nothing like finding out which of your students are lying to their other teachers about the work they need to do
Or what theyâre like in other classes
(You and Hongjoong, and sometimes Wooyoung, tended to have very different opinions about some students than San did so it was double fascinating)
Who theyâre friends with outside of your class
Or crushes they have on each other
Basically if you spend every day around preteens you gossip like them too
It was now November and starting to get uncomfortably cold outside
So San had offered his home as a little gathering space for you all to order food and hang out
It was almost like a little Friendsgiving

You immediately scoffed
âIâm about to write an email home about that kidâ
Hongjoong was surprised
Annoying kids existed in every class but you usually had something nice to say about them at first at least before you got into the bad behavior
He hadnât had this particular student but he was intrigued as to why he annoyed you so much

You let out an unamused laugh and crossed your arms over your chest
Hongjoong was fascinated and quite enamored with this new side of you
âIf he has time to help his friends then he should be working on the seven late assignments Iâve been reminding him about. He hasnât turned in anything for two weeksâ
Wooyoung gasped and covered his mouth
âYouâre jokingâ
âIâve talked to him about it twice and I warned him if I had to remind him a third time then I would email his parentsâ you said, shaking your head âLike I asked him if heâs understanding the material, if heâs got something going on at home, if he needs some help, and heâs giving me nothing to go off ofâ
Wooyoung smiled devilishly
âHeâs been lying to me, then. I ask him every day if he has other classes to do stuff for and he says no. I will absolutely be getting on him about thatâ
San shook his head
âTeenagersâ he sighed
Everyone nodded and repeated what heâd said
âTeenagers.â
After a moment of silence, Hongjoong spoke up

The mood lifted immediately and everyone gave their own version of the word âawwâ

Complaining was fun, but he loved the light in your eyes when you talked about the parts of the job that you loved
Anyway as I said it was November and the Before Christmas faction of teachers was starting to get nervous because there was no sign of anything happening
They saw you walk out together more than usual but they didnât know that you were meeting up outside of school and stuff
The kids were also more riled up about it than usual
To the point where Hongjoong wondered if the other teachers were inciting chaos on purpose
It was getting bad enough that one of his classes almost failed a test across the boardâon a unit about rounding and converting fractions to decimals of all things
As in the easiest math ever
So Mr. Kim had to resort to drastic measures
At the beginning of all his classes, he drew a box on the edge of the whiteboard
âThis is the nonsense boxâ he explained with a teacherly smile
That is to say frustrated but still filled with love for his students
âEvery time one of you is talking about anything that is not related to class, a tally mark goes in the box. Each tally mark represents an extra fifteen seconds you get to sit in your seat after the bell ringsâ
A chorus of protest arose
âI donât want to hear itâ Mr. Kim shook his head âHow many of you are planning on retaking last Fridayâs test?â
About half of the hands in the room came up sheepishly
âExactly. Itâs because weâre constantly off topic that no one is able to listen and learn in here. We can do better, okay?â
And then immediately from the back of the room
âOoh, Miss (L/N) just passed in the hall!!!â
And chorus of âOooooohâ
Whether it was true or not, Hongjoong was happy to draw his first tally mark without a word
Just that same teacherly smile
Another round of protest came and he drew another one
After the third tally mark, they shut up
âGood. Letâs talk about coefficients. Has anyone heard that word before?â
Once again I will say it was November
And the month after November is December
And December is the month of Christmas
Not just Christmas break
But Christmas itself
And that meant that Hongjoong now
After coming back from a brief Thanksgiving break
Had only a few weeks to find you a Christmas present
Now he wasnât thoughtless like this wasnât the first time it had crossed his mind
It had just stressed him out wondering if he would have the guts to confess his feelings for you or if he would be outed somehow first
Plus in case yâall didnât know teaching (especially teaching around the holidays) is stressful
He just imagined Christmas as this far off date that was too good to ever come
And so he hadnât even had time to think about what to get you

A fun math shirt?
Not a gift card though that was far too impersonal
Nothing seemed good enough for you
If he were to deliver his feelings with a gift like any of these, it felt insufficient
Most lunches the last bit of November and the first week of December

He spent fretting over his Amazon cart with his head in his hands
And then the most unfortunate miracle occurred
The heaters toward the math hall decided working at full capacity was a waste of tax dollars
And the weather was shaping up to be quite uncomfortable
Everyone started to bring blankets and stuff but it was never quite enough
Your classroom was especially cold, since it was the farthest down the hall
So Hongjoong was gifted an opportunity
He went and found one of those soft and cozy electric blankets
In a color he assumed to be your favorite considering how much you wore it and how many of the little trinkets around your classroom were that color
And he packaged it like he had meant to give it to you for Christmas anyway
Then he brought it for you the next day
You were sitting at your desk in your full winter outdoor gear with a blanket that did look cozy but thankfully was not electric
And your teeth were practically chattering as you waved hello
He still hadnât taken off his coat or his gloves either actually
He set the present on your desk
âI was saving this for Christmas but I think you might need it more nowâ he told you with a grin
Your curiosity was suddenly piqued
You opened the gift cautiously, glancing up at him every few seconds
But as soon as you felt the material of the blanket, you perked up
And upon discovering that it was electric you could have cried
âI havenât been able to feel my fingers since last weekâ you told him gratefully âSeriously I was trying to figure out how many space heaters I would need to buy to survive the winterâ
âThe department head has one in her classroomâ he said âIf you grab your old blanket and your laptop then you can let your new blanket heat up here while we hang out over thereâ
What a beautiful suggestion
The department head raised her eyebrow at the two of you coming in with blankets
But she smiled too when she saw you settling down in front of her heater
âDonât tell anyoneâ she said âbut sometimes I take a nap over there during lunchâ
âOh I see exactly whyâ you agreed, sitting cross-legged and setting your computer in your lap âI can literally feel my bones thawing outâ
Hongjoong settled down a respectable distance from you
But he thought someone else was pranking him when he felt a blanket drape over his shoulders
He looked around, startled, and then he realized it was the other side of your blanket
You had thrown your blanket over him to share, even though he had one of his own
And now you were pulling his arm to get him to scoot closer to you

He would not be happy if his alarm rang
But no it was real and he happily obliged
You were sitting shoulder to shoulder again
Just like at the professional development workshop
Except this time it was so warm and cozy and there was definitely a much less professional vibe
The department head raised her eyebrow at you once again
But Hongjoong was way too enamored with your shy smile to notice
After just a few minutes in this cozy little haven
Your time was unfortunately cut short
Not by students arriving to school
But by Wooyoung poking his head into the classroom
âOh Iâve been looking everywhere for you guysâ
He stepped into the classroom and greeted its owner accordingly
She nodded as if to allow him permission to enter
âThey have hot chocolate down in the teachers loungeâ Wooyoung informed them âI figured you icicles back here in the freezer rooms would want some but it looks like you were hiding aââ he looked down at the two of you skeptically âcampfire back hereâ
Wooyoung clearly thought he meant something by that but no one else knew what he was trying to say
So his last comment went ignored
âDo you want hot chocolate?â Hongjoong asked you âI can go get some for usâ
âNo itâs okay Iâll go with youâÂ
Oh Wooyoung saw exactly what was going on here
Hongjoong did not
Hongjoong was a little confusedâwas his help becoming an awkward burden to you?
While Wooyoung saw the truth
You just wanted the excuse to walk with him
Now Wooyoung had two choices
He could step back and let you two walk down together, maybe say something to speed this math teacher romance along
Or he could third wheel
And who was Wooyoung if he didnât pass up the chance to annoy?
Plus he had taken an oath once he started collecting bets that he wouldnât try to swing the competition one way or another
And since telling you about the hot chocolate while you were together felt like pushing the competition faster, it felt right to pull it back a bit by getting in between you for a few minutes
So he offered hands to both of you to help you off the floor
âLetâs all go together thenâ he said âYou should also find out if your campsite director wants anyâ
âCampsite director?â Hongjoong asked, shutting his computer
You also closed your computer and set it aside, looking around to figure out who Wooyoung was talking about
âYour gracious host this morningâ he clarified, giving the department head a charming little wave
You both took Wooyoungâs hands at the same time and almost pulled him down with you in the process of standing up
As you straightened your pants, you asked the department head if she wanted you to bring her back any hot chocolate, to which she responded yes please
Wooyoung insisted on walking in the middle
And Hongjoong wondered if all of the patience he had acquired as a middle school teacher was going to be spent on not wringing this guyâs neck this morning
Fortunately Mr. Jung acted enough like one of Mr. Kimâs students that he was able to pretend he was one and just let it go
Unfortunately by the time they got back to the department headâs classroom kids were starting to show up so that was the end of artificial campfire cuddle time
But there was a silent agreement as you picked up your blankets and computers that you would be doing this again sometime
The first few weeks of December didnât necessarily fly by but they did go by quickly in hindsight if that makes sense
And before everyone knew it
Christmas break was upon you
And there was no further progression of the math department couple
The Before Christmas teachers had gotten antsier and antsier right up until the day before break started
But thankfully no one had been worried enough to interfere
Hongjoong decided to stay in his classroom that day

Because people had been giving him disappointed looks all over the school and he was tired of it

He was way too good at dressing for his job
So he wore jeans instead of his usual khakis and hoped that was different enough?

He only knew how to style it in a teacherly fashion

So he gave up and just prayed that he looked okay

The difference was subtle in theory but the way you dressed, the way you did your hair and makeup, it made for a world of difference

The two categories were before/after Christmas break and you notice/he confesses

As tempting as it would have been to say that you two deserved the money

And honestly? Very little about your at school dynamic changed

the more i think about it, the more i like that izuku becomes a teacher as a quirkless adult, and that he supposedly never takes on full-time hero work
... it just wouldn't feel like such an odd ending if it wasn't such a sharp turn from the themes of the story.
it would beat a dead horse to get into such themes: the insistence that izuku could be a [pro] hero too, save to win win to save (implication of bkdk as hero duo), go beyond to achieve your dreams, ect. others have commented on this eloquently enough. i want to contemplate how 430/431 are a valid ending... if the story matched the conclusion.
bnha has themes that could've been developed to make 430/431 make more sense. there's the excellent theme that average citizens can be heroes through 'mundane' actions, and a suggestion that an ideal future would be one where heroes have too much free time (ie, pro heroes overall would be a defunded profession). i personally adore these themes, and was disappointed that the ending didn't explore more of what a better quirk culture should look like beyond 'uraraka reforms quirk education classes.' those themes (plus the commentary on villains) suggested an eventual overhaul of the current quirk culture - which we didn't get. which sucks. because these themes, properly developed, would make PERFECT sense of a protagonist who decides to be an 'average citizen.'
yet these ideas weren't quite attributed to izuku's character. he's the protagonist. he was set up for the big flashy future, right? which is why it feels like such a sudden slap to so many fans that he was supposedly content working as a teacher for eight years, that he wouldn't jump at the opportunity to become a full time hero.
now, a good bit of this can be attributed to story medium. bnha was skewed in the beginning to function as a standard shounen (boy has powers, boy works hard, boy achieves big dreams), and that it wasn't until about the last hundred chapters or so that horikoshi dug his heels in about writing the story he wants to write. so clearly if the story's endgoal changed in his mind (which stories often do, and manga is extremely restrictive in that an author can't rewrite the full story to make the plot consistent), then he only had so much leeway to lead to the eventual ending of a quirkless citizen izuku without taking the hardest turn from the standard shounen tone at the beginning.
but even then. even then, that's about a hundred chapters that bnha could've introduced the idea that IZUKU could be a hero in ways unrelated to professional heroism. that it's so unhealthy for this kid to sacrifice so much of himself that it would actually be better for him to pursue a different career.* or that it was even a valid career path for someone who initially dreamed of being a pro hero.
like, take lemillion; izuku's literal mirror. the story could've kept togata functionally quirkless, could've explored the full grief of such a big dream lost, could've explored the sheer injustice that this KID was put on the front-line and thus his quirk and dream were snatched from him... and then introduced a way that togata could use his skills to help people in a different career.
or take all might; izuku's mentor and cautionary tale. maybe have all might talk to izuku about grappling with being quirkless again. maybe have him find who he is beyond being of service to others (which is clearly these two born-quirkless fuckers dealing with massive self-worth issues, trying to justify their existence with heroics), and find relief in that. maybe have him wonder aloud if it might have been better for him to choose such a profession outright from the beginning, rather than repeatedly almost DIE as a pro-hero. maybe have the two revisit that conversation from the first episode, that being a [quirkless] hero IS dangerous, but that there is genuine fulfillment in other work - as all might has found in teaching.
then when it happens to izuku, it wouldn't be such a shock to the audience. and even if we don't see him change over those eight years of the epilogue, it wouldn't be such a shock that he turns down full-time hero work. we'd get it.
*because continuing off this point: the story very much established that izuku CAN'T be trusted 'unsupervised' as a pro hero. that ofa is almost a curse. how many fuckin fanworks reference an adult izuku who never stops putting himself into harms way, who keeps nearly fuckin dying (or does die) cause he never thinks of himself? the story could've EASILY built on this to the point that it would feel like a blessing that izuku loses ofa and can't become a pro-hero.
(instead of it being played in this.... extremely weird.... grieved not grieved, katsuki's sobbing but izuku 'started out quirkless' so it's fine??? like??? the tone??? is in shambles???)
instead, the story said "you don't have to fight alone, izuku, cause your friends are here." most especially that katsuki inserted himself as izuku's primary protector and competitor. that katsuki developed a whole ass power-up that could MATCH ALL FOR ONE'S power, that he CAUGHT UP to izuku as a hero. at large, class a showed the fuck up, more than once, to throw down on izuku's behalf. the story said, yes izuku is recklessly selfless, and ofa only exasperates this, but his friends are so determined to work hard to make sure there's always someone at his back. this will be the new generation of heroes.
... which... should've led to a completely different story conclusion. one that would've been just as valid as 'izuku finds more stability and meaning in being a teacher.' it would just need to be an ending that would have fit the established themes. i would've loved that ending too.
in conclusion! there's more to being a hero than flashy heroic acts. izuku is a selfless maniac who's probably safer in the classroom tbh. manga is a restrictive medium that can't be rewritten into a more consistent plot. nevertheless, given the amount of chapters horikoshi had to play with the story he wanted to tell, there was time to develop pre-existing themes that would better anticipate the conclusion we got. 430 and gods 431 especially - despite being arguably a valid ending for the characters - didn't have to feel like such sharp left turns.
... and despite learning to appreciate izuku turning down katsuki's agency offer, i still don't like 431. lmao

I wish I could remember my classes on educational institutions and psychology better, but there was a point during the mid XXth century where the idea of "education's purpose is to form Professionals as Human Resources for The Market" (in Spanish it's called "PedagogĂa Tecnicista" and it's an offshoot of capitalist thinking) formed and it took hold in the United States and elsewhere.
It always existed in a way, it's evident that a well educated populace has better economic advantages, but traditionally, education was concieved as a way of enhancing a society by providing useful skills and knowledge (as well as nationalist projects). It was during the XXth century when the concept of "Human Resources" and institutions being destined not only to help, but to GROW the Market (neoliberalism) appeared.
This also wasn't a uniquely Usamerican case either. You can look at South Korea to see the highs and lows of this kind of thinking.
In Latin America, in contrast, MY MAN Paulo Freire, among others, developed "Critical Pedagogy" mostly incarnated in Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Freire, with a Marxist analysis of society and education's role on it. Education should be a dialogue between teacher and student with the ultimate goal of dismantling oppressive structures. This kind of thinking influenced how we view universities and academia here.
Education, as an institution, isn't inherently oppressive. It is oppressive when it's used to sustain oppresive models or the domination of profit. Education can be a tool for liberation and for the dignity of people, this is the kind of education I want.

Geto Complex / Suguru Complex

I need to stop blabbing in different places.
Out of the numerous things Gojo could have developed a complex about (like almost dying, feeling alienated/sheltered, etc.), it was that he âcouldnât stopâ Geto from defecting.
This is interesting. He did not blame Geto or anyone / anything else. We know he was a âresigned personâ who could accept things rationally / objectively, but Getoâs defection really hit him harder than anything ever did in his entire life.
While he could accept his departure & even the necessity of his death, Gojo carried this relationship in the pocket of his heart like the one & only treasured photograph within a precious locket. Getoâs pain was his own. He guarded it very, very well. In fact Iâd even call him a bit of a guard dog where he just didnât let anyone into that space. At all.
This is also why I respect him as a teacher. Some lines you just donât cross professionally. His students were his students. The relationship chart thankfully depicts that too. It doesnât cheapen the quality of their student-mentor relationship: it strengthens it. Gojo would never lay his hands on the youth that he was determined to protect, after all.
He took onboard a lot from Geto. These boundaries and respect were birthed from the things he experienced with Geto. But! Some things were just natural to Gojo.
As much as he said he hated righteousness and the expectations that came along with the burden of âthe strongâ - Gojo actually practice it. From a young age, going on missions and doing what was loosely expected of him, within the parameters of the jujutsu tradition. He just⌠didnât imbue it with too much emotion - because, again, Geto was the subjective (compassionate and emotional / philosophical) type and Gojo was the objective (rational and pragmatic / straightforward) type.
It seems aligned with his character shown in HI where Gojo took on the âblameâ when things went wrong too, shielding Geto when he apologised & made plans to proceed with their mission (this is how they balanced each other out when their relationship was healthy) - staying focused and generally being reliable, dependable, and offering an aura of security to Geto.
The subtle undercurrent that likely facilitated the Geto complex was that, young Gojo had this attitude where he also readily accepted that âthings are just mine if I wantâ. He was powerful. Never experienced insecurity or poverty. He was a genius. He never had close relationships, so he never knew loss. He never particularly wanted anything and people came and went easily. Nobody really mattered.
But nobody could hold a candle to Geto Suguru. Gojo didnât realise that there were some things that he needed to look after.
So with this attitude he didnât imagine he needed to treasure Geto after enlightening, so I think he realised that too late. He didnât realise he was thinking arrogantly. He just had no idea he took anything for granted. He was born to just be strong. Everyone treated him that way.
Except: Geto Suguru.
Thatâs why he had a Geto complex... he blamed himself (like always) but it was a painful lesson he experienced for the first time -
To want something he cannot have.
To want to save someone who didnât want to be saved.
To want to be with someone who didnât want him to come along.
To love someone who did not want to be loved.
To learn something only for it to be too late.
To be strong, yet, not strong enough.
So what else could Gojo Satoru do with his love, but to love and respect Geto from afar, living in a way that would make Geto proudâŚ
Isnât that profound?
To let someone change you so much because that is all that is left of them- so he treasured him like that...
And perhaps, also important, is that Gojo recognised that what he had received (and was receiving even when being left behind) was love.
So, really⌠the pure love between them was also undeniably shared.
If Gojo had a Geto complex, Iâm certain Geto had a Gojo complex of some kind where he never forgave himself, wore the kesa with his best friendâs name on it & brainwashed himself with âlove to the strongâ & âweak & foolish deserve to be punished by deathâ (these were the wall scrolls in jjk 0).

Ashley Hearn's arrival aboard the HMS Sassenach...

... has immediately been met with an expert smirk across the street:

I was not really surprised. The blogger could not help herself (she rarely does). She had to weigh in, with that insinuating tone that seems to be part of her personal brand. And, in line with what she consistently posted, the idea is that S, a highly functioning alcoholic in her book, thoughtlessly hired another highly functioning alcoholic, with NO credentials to boot. Plus a profiteer of sorts, right?
Perhaps that blogger wanted to be their new marketing manager and there she is, instead, somewhere farfarfar away from Walhalla. An unsung, compliment deprived and undiscovered hero without a cape? For I have no other elegant & merciful explanation for what could be logically construed as an outburst of hurt ego (we KNOW she has PROPER CREDENTIALS, she shouted it REPEATEDLY across the UNIVERSE), coupled with the usual pettiness, every single time things seem to challenge her view of reality.
Let's unpack:
Ashley has decent education credentials. I am writing this because I bet the farm many casual readers of that legit calumny ended up thinking that she had NO education at all:

A BA in Mathematics, at a good public university in Maryland. And a Master's Degree in Teacher Education and Professional Development at Walden University, a for-profit education institution based in Minnesota, most likely online.
A word about Walden University, though, simply because of the recent controversy related to it. While it is true that Walden has been forced to settle a class action outside of court ( it cost them 28.5 million dollars to do so), that lawsuit was strictly related to African-American students denouncing the lack of transparency related to the university's DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) program.

Anyways, here are her real professional credentials, carefully hidden by the blogger:

Eight years and a half consistent work experience for the US subsidiary of Mast-Jägermeister, one of the most prestigious German liquor companies, founded in 1878 (https://www.mast-jaegermeister.de/). Would anyone be such a fool as to think she'd be constantly promoted by those people just for her eyes only, especially as a complete outsider to the very closed world of spirits business?
I see a hard-working woman, with good professional skills and obvious qualities (brand loyalty, for example), given a new career opportunity she clearly thought interesting enough to make her jump onboard. And I very much prefer an honest underdog, ballsy enough to take her passion and make it happen (thanks, Flashdance!) in a cutthroat, male dominated business environment, to the many lukewarm and half-hearted executives still lingering around in so many companies around the world just for the sake of commodity, predictability and mortgage.
And I honestly wish her every success. She does not deserve this. Nobody does. Luckily for her, she couldn't care less that a Nobody with a blog tried to rain on her parade.
Interestingly enough, Norouzi was the only SS bigwig NOT to congratulate her on Insta. He didn't relay the news, he didn't even like the post, even if they mutually follow eachother (their interaction always seemed to be minimal, though). But that is another story and it is way too early to speculate.

The conference room was bathed in the harsh glow of fluorescent lights, casting a clinical brightness over the assembled staff. Minthara sat near the end of the table, a pencil in hand, tapping it rhythmically against her notepad. She was mentally reviewing the next phase of her research project, barely paying attention to the mundane discussions around her.
Gale, the head of staff, stood at the front, his presence commanding the room. He cleared his throat, drawing everyone's attention. "Before we conclude today's meeting, I have an important announcement regarding our faculty for the upcoming semester."
Minthara barely glanced up, her mind still elsewhere.
"We are pleased to welcome a new professor who will be teaching anatomy," Gale continued. "Dr. Orin Dered."
The name hit Minthara like a physical blow. The pencil in her hand snapped with a sharp crack, the sound startling those around her. Her eyes narrowed, and she shot a piercing glare at Gale.
"This is unacceptable," she said, her voice low and filled with barely contained fury.
Gale sighed, clearly anticipating her reaction. "Minthara, I understand your concerns, but Dr. Dered is one of the leading experts in anatomy. Our students deserve the best education we can provide."
The rest of the staff exchanged uneasy glances. They were well aware of the tumultuous history between Minthara and Orin. Once close-knit research partners, now intense rivals.
Minthara stood, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "You don't understand," she hissed. "Orin is a manipulative, self-servingâ"
"Enough, Minthara," Gale interrupted, his tone firm. "This decision is final. Orin's expertise will greatly benefit our students, and we are fortunate to have her."
The tension in the room was palpable. Minthara's hands clenched into fists at her sides, her knuckles white. She stared Gale down, her eyes blazing with anger. "You have no idea what you're doing," she spat. "Orin's presence here will be a disaster."
Without another word, she turned and stormed out of the room, the door slamming shut behind her with a resounding bang. The remaining staff sat in stunned silence, the atmosphere thick with unease.
Alfira, always the empathetic one, started to rise from her seat. "Maybe I should go after herâŚ"
Rolan, sitting beside her, grabbed her arm and yanked her back down. "Are you out of your mind?" he whispered urgently. "Do you have a death wish? Let her cool off."
Alfira looked torn but reluctantly nodded, staying in her seat. The meeting resumed, but the energy in the room had shifted, a heavy sense of foreboding hanging over the staff.
Meanwhile, Minthara strode down the hallway, her mind racing. She needed to calm down, to think. But the mere thought of Orin being back in her life, even professionally, was enough to send her into a tailspin. She headed towards her office, desperate for the solitude and sanctuary it provided, her mind already strategizing how to handle this unexpected and unwelcome development.
A few days later you had been wandering the hallways, a lightness in your step, excited about the news you had heard. Orin Dered, the renowned expert in anatomy, was joining the faculty for a semester. The whispers about her expertise and groundbreaking research had always intrigued you, and now you had the chance to learn from her directly.
You made your way to Minthara's office, eager to share your excitement. Her door was slightly ajar, and you could see her sitting at her desk, a stormy expression on her face. You knocked softly and entered, a smile on your lips.
"Minthara, did you hear? Orin Dered is going to be teaching here next semester!" you exclaimed, not noticing the dark cloud that seemed to hang over her.
Minthara's head snapped up, her eyes narrowing as they locked onto yours. "I heard," she said coldly, her tone sending a shiver down your spine.
You paused, confused by her reaction. "I thought you'd be happy for me. I mean, you and Orin worked closely together before, right? This is such a great opportunity for me to learn from one of the best."
Minthara stood abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "You will not take her class," she snapped, her voice icy.
You blinked, taken aback by her sudden outburst. "What? Why not? This is a huge chance for my education. I can't pass it up just because there's some bad blood between you two."
Minthara's eyes flashed with anger, and she took a step towards you. "I'm forbidding it. If you take Orin's class, then thisâusâis over."
Her words hit you like a physical blow. You stood there, stunned, your heart aching with confusion and hurt. You knew they were rivals but you thought Minthara cared for you more than some petty rivalry. "Minthara, that's not fair. You can't just control my education like this. I know there's history between you and Orin, but this is my future we're talking about."
Minthara's expression hardened, her jaw clenched tightly. "I said no. If you enroll in her class, consider our relationship finished."
Tears welled up in your eyes, and you turned away from her, unable to comprehend why she was being so irrational. "I can't believe you're doing this," you whispered, your voice breaking. "I thought you cared about me."
With that, you walked out of her office, the door closing behind you with a finality that echoed through your heart. You could feel the weight of her gaze on your back, but you didn't look back. The hurt and confusion swirling inside you were too much to bear.
Minthara slumped back into her chair, her head in her hands. She had never wanted to hurt you, but the thought of Orin manipulating and hurting you the way she had been hurt was unbearable. She couldn't explain it to you without revealing too much, and now she was left with the pain of knowing she had pushed you away.
The next few days were a blur of mixed emotions. You spent most of your time sulking in your dorm room, replaying the argument with Minthara in your mind. Her words had cut deep, and you were struggling to understand why she would react so harshly. Despite your frustration, you couldnât bring yourself to enroll in Orin's class. The fear of losing Minthara, of severing the bond you had with her, was too great. You loved her, adored her.
One afternoon, as you were leaving Professor Dekarios' lecture, he approached you. "Hey, can I have a word?" he asked, his tone gentle.
You nodded, feeling a twinge of curiosity. Professor Dekarios was always perceptive, and it seemed he had noticed your recent change in demeanor.
"I couldn't help but notice that you're not enrolled in Dr. Dered's anatomy class," he began, his eyes searching your face. "I thought it would be a perfect fit for you, given your interests and potential."
You sighed, glancing away. "It's complicated," you mumbled.
He nodded, understanding evident in his eyes. "I know Minthara has been mentoring you closely, and I can imagine that might be influencing your decision. She can be quite... intense."
You let out a bitter laugh. "That's one way to put it."
Professor Dekarios leaned against the desk, his demeanor casual yet concerned. "Listen, I donât know all the details of your relationship with her, but I do know that this is an important opportunity for you. If youâre worried about Minthara's reaction, I could arrange a private meeting between you and Dr. Dered. It would be off the record, and Minthara wouldn't need to know."
Your heart raced at the suggestion. A private meeting with Orin could be a way to explore your interest without openly defying Minthara. "You really think that could work?" you asked, hope creeping into your voice.
He smiled reassuringly. "Absolutely. Orin is here to teach and share her knowledge. I doubt she'd pass up the chance to mentor a promising student like you. And if we keep it discreet, Minthara won't have to know."
You hesitated for a moment, weighing the risks. But the prospect of learning from Orin was too enticing to ignore. "Okay," you agreed. "Let's do it. A meeting can't hurt."
Professor Dekarios nodded, satisfied. "I'll set it up. Just trust me, this could be a great opportunity for you."
You sat nervously outside of Dr Dered's office, you knew that it was wrong, what you were doing. But if Minthara had thought her harsh words had deterred you it had only spurred you on. You wanted to experience Orin yourself, learn from her yourself. You loved Minthara, you would kiss the ground she walked on if she asked you to, you would kill for her, you would die for her. But your education was paramount, and you understood what Minthara was asking of you, you couldn't understand why. That was what mattered, because you knew why you worshipped Minthara, you didn't know why Minthara didn't want you to be taught by Orin. Not knowing was dangerous, because not knowing meant that you needed to find out.
"Y/N L/N?" Orin called out as she opened her new office door, it was thankfully on the other side of the complex so you had no chance of Minthara walking past. Plus Professor Dekarios had promised that he would be in a meeting with her at this time. Orin was a pale woman, and had long blonde hair that was messily put away in a plait. She wore a striking blood red pantsuit, accompanied with a pair of sandals - it was like she wasn't wearing any shoes at all. Minthara would never have been caught dead in shoes like that but you assumed that due to her work she preferred to remain grounded, if you examined and pulled apart bodies all day you would want to stay grounded too.
You stood up and gave an awkward wave before walking into Orin's office, it was surrounded in packed up boxes but she had a realistic anatomically correct human body hung up, with removable organs included.
"Thank you so much for seeing me, Dr Dered," You nervously said, fidgeting with your hands.
"Oh my little fleshing, call me Orin, with what I deal with I prefer to deal with my students on a more intimate level." Orin told you giving you a wicked smile. You tried not to panic at the endearment she had addressed you with, she was known for her eclecticism. "Professor Dekarios tells me you are a student excelling in your classes, so I cannot help but wonder why not mine?"
"Oh um, my schedule just didn't allow it, which is why Professor Dekarios so kindly-'
"-Professor Dekarios did say that but I checked for myself and your schedule fully allows you to take my class." Orin interrupted you and leaned across her desk towards you. "So I cannot help but wonder if this has anything to do with Dr Baenre."
"D-Dr Baenre?" You repeated, heat rising to your cheeks from the embarrassment of being immediately caught out in your lie. "Why would Dr Baenre have anything to do with it?"
"It is clear she had laid her claim on your academic prowess and does not plan on letting you go." Orin smirked at you as she propped her feet up on the desk. "Looking at the work you have submitted and your academic record I can understand why, you are an extremely talented young woman Y/N."
"I-uh- thank you, I uh don't actually hear that a lot.." You murmured and it was true, Minthara knew of your brilliance so didn't feel the need to comment on it.
"And what a pitiful shame that is." Orin pouted, sitting up in her chair and clasping her hands together. "But you have made-"
Before Orin could finish her sentence her office door swung open, and a fuming Minthara stood in her doorway. You felt yourself shrink into yourself as you were victim to her wrathful glare .
"L/N. Out. Now. Dr Dered and I have some urgent matters to discuss." Minthara seethed and you quickly gathered your things, unable to meet her eye. Though before you walked past her you took a deep breath in, you did this for you, for your benefit. You were not to be ashamed of that. So as you walked past her, you met her eye, proudly, defiantly.
The door slammed behind you and you let out the breath you didn't know you were holding. You walked past a very apologetic looking Professor Dekarios who's plans had clearly backfired. Then you had a decision, you could go back to your dorm or back to Minthara's office. Your head told you to go back to your dorm room, yet your heart urged you to go to Minthara's office. You had let your head dictate your actions that day, it was time for the heart to take control.
âWhat exactly do you think you are doing, Orin?!â Minthara snapped, her voice trembling with barely controlled anger. âNot only here, but with my top student?â
Orin leaned casually against the desk, her expression a mixture of amusement and condescension. âOh, Minthara, my love, I missed you too...â she cooed, stepping forward with her arms outstretched, as if expecting a warm embrace.
Minthara scoffed and took a step back, glaring at Orin with disdain. âDonât come any closer,â she hissed, crossing her arms tightly across her chest.
Orinâs arms dropped, but she maintained her cool smile. âStill as cold as ever, my dear,â she remarked, her tone dripping with false sweetness.
Mintharaâs patience was wearing thin. âWhat do you want, Orin?â she spat, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
Ignoring the question, Orin turned her attention to the papers on Mintharaâs desk, idly flipping through them. âI can see why you like her,â she said, her voice taking on a contemplative tone. âSheâs got a brilliant mind.â
Minthara tensed at the mention of you, her jaw clenching in anger. She hated that Orin even knew your name, let alone took an interest in you. âWhat I would do to crack it open and slice it bit by bit for examination,â Orin continued, her voice low and almost wistful. âTo feel her brain on my fingertips.â
âYou are disgusting, you know that, donât you?â Minthara scoffed, rolling her eyes in a vain attempt to hide her unease.
Orin chuckled softly. âAnd youâve become sentimental,â she countered, her gaze flicking back to Minthara. âThough, as toys go, you have managed to acquire yourself such a beautiful one. I canât wait until you inevitably throw her out of your pram.â
That was the final straw. Minthara surged forward, grabbing Orin by the lapels of her blazer and yanking her close. âY/N is not a toy. Do you understand that?â she snarled, her face inches from Orinâs. âShe is more humane than you will ever be. Speak to her again, and I will rip your tongue out.â
Orinâs eyes glittered with a perverse delight. âOoh, Minthara, youâve grown softââ
Minthara released her grip and shoved Orin back, the force of the push causing Orin to stumble slightly. âI donât even know why I waste my time with you,â Minthara said, her voice cold and final.
Orin straightened her blazer, her cool smile never faltering. âBecause, my dear Minthara, deep down, you know youâll always be drawn back to me.â
Minthara didnât dignify that with a response. She turned on her heel and walked out of the office, her heart pounding with a mixture of rage and protectiveness. Orin might be back in her life, but Minthara was determined to shield you from her at any cost.

Not That Hard
Summary: When one story ends, another one begins. Maze, formerly a Republic Soldier, is now a bounty hunter. Heâs used to things being orderly, everything has a place, and everything should be in its place. So when he ends up locked in a small cell with the woman heâs been searching for, a woman whoâs been missing for three weeks, he knows that everything is about to be turned on its head.

A/N: So, I've never written Maze before, but I'm always happy to write any of the Alphas, or any star wars character. His page on Wookieepedia wasn't the best, but I did the best I could. I hope you like it! Also, I've been watching a lot of Numb3rs, so that's where the basic idea of this came from.
Maze leans back against the stone wall, his gaze drifting from the woman sleeping on the singular cot in the cell to the door, and then back again. Heâs glad that sheâs asleep. He wasnât sure that she would fall asleep, honestly.
He leans over and tugs the thin blanket a little higher over her shoulders. The blanket wonât do much to keep the cold out, itâs too thin, but itâs enough that she can sleep.
Three weeks ago the University of Theeds reached out to him, telling him that one of their Teachers had gone missing. They said to him that someone had broken into her home, torn the place to pieces, and taken her.
The University hired him to find her since he was something of an expert on finding people.
The fact that sheâs alive is a damned miracle, in his opinion. After three weeks, statistics indicate that he should have found her in a ditch somewhere.
Heâs never been so glad to be wrong in his life.
Still, the fact that they havenât killed her suggests that they want something from her. Maze shifts so that heâs sitting on the cot beside her, tired of sitting on the ground.
He needs to think.
Why would someone want a University Professor?
Absently, Maze brushes a strand of hair off her face as he thinks about what he knows about her.
Sheâs young, barely brushing 25 years old. Sheâs an only child. Her mom died from heart disease when she was a child, her dad recently retired to a lake house. Thereâs no other family.
Sheâs single, and her only friends are people who work at the University with her. Honestly, it sounds like a lonely life to him, but according to her colleagues and friends, sheâs seemed lonely or unhappy.
He can respect that.
Mazeâs eyes snap to her face as she releases a quiet noise and shifts on the cot, seemingly to curl into his warmth while also opening her eyes. âYou should go back to sleep, Professor. Itâs early.â He says quietly.
She sighs and shakes her head, âNo point. Theyâre going to be coming soon.â Slowly, she sits up and shifts so sheâs able to press her face against his shoulder.Â
âWhat do they want?â Maze asks, mentally kicking himself for not asking her earlier. But then, her injuries were pretty severe. It makes sense that he would put that aside.
âIâm a Bio-Engineer.â She replies tiredly, âThey want me to tell them how to break into BioGen.â
âWhy?â
âBioGenâs biggest thing is weaponizing viruses.â
Maze stiffens and his gaze snaps to her face, âBioWeapons are illegal. Even in the Empire.â
âThey weaponize them so that they can try and develop cures for them. Itâs all legal and above board.â She reassures, âEven in the Empire.â
âWhyâd you leave?â
âA Tenured Professorship at the University of Theeds is a great honor, not to mention it pays very well.â She replies, âIt made sense, career-wise.â
âOnly thereâs a lot less security at the University compared to a Biomedical facility.â
She huffs out a laugh, âYeah, there is that.â She shifts her head slightly, âBut this has never happened before. Ever. People leave BioGen all of the time.â
âAnd youâre the first one kidnapped?â
âThat I know of.â
There are heavy footsteps from the hall and Maze shifts so that his body is shielding hers. The door slams open and three men step into the room.
Theyâre not big men, if Maze were to stand, heâd tower over them. It burns him up that he allowed men like them to capture him so he would be able to find the professor.Â
âProfessor,â One of the men stalks towards Maze, and he feels her shrink down behind him, âCome on, girl. Are we really going to do this? All you gotta do is give us the information, and then youâll both go free.â
âDonât lie. We all know that the moment she tells you what you want to know, youâll kill her.â Maze growls out.
The man laughs, âWell, itâll be a quick death, rather than this slow, dragged-out death.â
Behind him, the Professor trembles.Â
âIs this all of you? Just three men?â
âWe still caught you, clone.â One of the other men sneers, âGrab the Professorââ
The first man reaches to grab the Professor, only for Maze to move, swiftly breaking the manâs arm, and slamming his head against the wall, causing him to crumple to the floor.
âGet low, Professor.â Maze orders as he stands and advances on the two remaining men. He doesnât wait to see if sheâs following his direction, as he suddenly has two furious men to contend with.
Unfortunately for them, heâs an Alpha Class clone, and theyâre unarmed.
The fight canât even be called a proper fight. The two remaining kidnappers go down with several well-placed hits, and Maze tosses them into the cell while motioning for the Professor to join him.
âWeâre leaving,â Maze says to the woman as he holds his hand out for her.
Nervously she nods and takes his hand, âWhere are we going?â
âWell, it was the University who hired me.â Maze replies as he peeks into the hall, and then leads her out of the cell as soon as he notes that itâs safe.
âUmââ
Maze stops and looks at her, âWhatâs wrong?â
âJustâŚdid they seem smart enough to come up with this on their own?â
Maze stares at her for a long time, and then he sighs, âNo. They didnât.â Heâs quiet for a moment, âAlright, there must be something here to indicate who hired them. Follow me.â
Maze leads abruptly turns down a side hallway and leads her into a much larger room. There are computers, though they seem largely untouched. It looks like the kidnappers were more concerned with the games that were playing on the four holos lined up next to each other than the computers.
There are three couches, each other them surrounded by empty bottles and empty pizza boxes.Â
âWell,â Maze notes as he steps around a pile of trash, âCriminal Genuises they are not.â
The Professor peers at a holo-board next to the couches, âIt looks like they have a gambling problem.â
âLucky for us. It means they probably didnât delete anything.â Maze walks over to the computers, âStay close, Professor.â
âAhâŚSorry.â She hurries to his side and peeks around him at the monitors.
Maze flashes a small smile at her and then focuses on the computers. âHey, Professor?â
âYes?â
âHowâd they grab you?â
âI was heading home from a day of classes, and they ran me off the road.â She replies.
âYou were driving yourself.â
âYeah.â
âDoes anyone know your route home?â
âI mean, thereâs only one road off of the main campus,â She replies, âBut I generally donât know what route Iâm taking home until I get in the car. It depends on the traffic and if I need to go grocery shopping.â
âAnd you didnât tell anyone your plans for the evening when you were taken?â Maze asks as he scans something on the screen.
âNo. No one.â
âIt looks like our violent friends were hired by Levi Kelley. At least, thatâs who paid them.â
âLevi Kelley?â
âYou know him?â
âYeah, heâs the head of the Biology Department at the University. I thought you said the University hired you?â
âYeah, the Dean hired me. This Levi person, is he your supervisor?â
âNo. I mean, he thinks that he is, but weâre on the same level.â
âAre you friends?â
âIâve always been a bitâŚambivalent towards him. Heâs a good teacher, but heâs kind of a terrible person. Racist, sexist, the whole shebang.âÂ
âAnd he works at a University?â
âHeâs a very good teacher. But he lost his tenure last year.â
âFor what?â
âAcademic misconduct, according to the rumors.â She leans against his side, exhausted, âThe only person who knows the truth would be the Dean.â
âSo itâs revenge.â Maze murmurs, âUse you to get an incurable virus, and release it on the school. Did you tell them anything?â
âNo, I didnât. I wouldnât.â
âThey tortured you, Professor. No one would blame you if you did.â
âIâm telling you, I didnât. I left Biogen two years ago, Maze. I donât remember any passwords or door codes. And they removed my biometrics from their system on my last day. I swear it.â
âOkay.â Maze lightly pushes some of her hair out of her face, âSo they need someone else, a current employee.â
âYeah, itâs the only way to get inside.â
âAlright. Letâs get out of here and alert the authorities. And get you some medical attention.â
âYes please.â
Maze lightly presses his hand against the small of her back, guiding her towards the door, âI have one more question, Professor.â
âGo ahead?â
âWhen my brothers and I were decanted, we were given enhanced aging.â
âYes, it was the only way for the Kaminoans to get a viable army in 10 years.â She replies.
âYeah, you think you can reverse it?â
âReverse it?â She repeats, sounding more thoughtful than surprised. Maze watches as she absently scratches at a deep gash on her cheek, âI donât know about reversing it,â She finally says, âbut I might be able to cure it. With enough blood samples.â
âReally?â
âWell sure, itâs not that hard. Itâs just gene manipulation.â She frowns at him thoughtfully, âLook, all the information I need is here,â she lightly taps his chest, âThe more of your brothers I can get blood samples from, the easier itâll be to make a cure.â
âCan you do it at the University while also teaching?â
âI mean, sure. But the University of Theeds is funded by the Emperor. Iâm guessing you donât want the Empire to know about it.â
âNo, I donât.â Maze replies.
Sheâs quiet for a moment, âFind me a place to work, off of Naboo, and I can help you.â
âIf you can cure this, I might just kiss you,â Maze says with a sly smile.
Her face heats and she wonât look at him, âWell, that seems a bit excessive,â She mumbles.
She squeaks when he lightly drapes his arm over her shoulder and tugs her against his side, âNo. It isnât. Come on, Professor. Letâs get you safe.â

Career Day Pt 1
It was Development Day at Abbott Elementary and all the teachers were gathered in the gymnasium to go through it. Lina was sitting behind Gregory Eddie on her phone as she was waiting for the day to start when one of her good friends, Janine Teagues, had entered the gym; however, she knew that she was going to sit next to Greg so she stayed on her phone. When Janine reached the row that Gregory was in, Gregory had asked.
âLeft or right?â
âUmmm, left,â Janine smiled and sat down, âThank you,â
âGood choice, good choice,â Gregory said.
âHey, Lina. How are you?â Janine turned to ask the mildly experienced teacher.
âIâm good as can be. Iâm breathing,â Lina shrugged.
That was when Development Day began, and Ava started talking, âGood day to the fine teachers of Abbott Elementary,â
Everyone had turned to look at Gregory while he rolled his eyes and sighed.
âWhat?â Ava asked.
âNo comment about Gregory being F-O-I-N, foine?â Melissa asked, which caused Lina to smirk.
âNo, Ms. Schemmenti. I was speaking to everyone, but since all eyes are on him, uh, Mr. Eddie, would you mind reading from the first paragraph of your immaculately assembled binder?â Ava asked.
âSexily?â Gregory asked.
âExcuse me. That is not only suggestive but highly inappropriate in front of our company,â Ava motioned to the three people standing on the stage.
âUh, hi. Hi, everybody,â the man said, causing Lina to look at him with a slightly slack jaw as she processed his attractiveness. Weâre from the school district. Principal Coleman invited us to observe and collaborate with you on this Development Day.â
âYes! The importance of collaboration is one of the many things I learned while matriculating at Cambridge,â Ava said.
Lina scoffed and shook her head as the principal spoke about how she had gone to Harvard over the summer.
âWeâre super excited to be here on behalf of the new superintendent, John Reynolds. Iâm Manny. Thatâs my dream team over there. Thatâs Emily. Thatâs Simon,â Manny introduced his coworkers, âAnd we donât come empty-handed. We come with some iPads and SMART boards for your classrooms, loaded with learning apps.â Claps were heard scattered through the audience.
âNew and improved models,â Melissa leaned towards Barbara.
âSame old engines,â Barbara said, âthese people arenât gonna change a blessed thing except how many bodies are in the room,â
Lina continued sitting there, stoic, as Ava told Gregory that he still needed to read the first passage of the binder. When Gregory finished reading, Ava muttered into the microphone what she had to say next. So, she emerged from behind the podium and started dancing, asking if anyone had any ideas they would like to implement from the summer.
Janine raised her hand.
âJanine! One of our mostâŚteachers at Abbott,â Ava introduced.
âSo, I was thinking over the summer while I was spending time with myself and just thinking about what really led me to this point in my lifeâŚâ Janine rambled.
âJanine, get to the point!â Lina groaned as she put her head back. Manny couldnât help but notice Lina and had a slight smile on his face; however, Lina didnât notice it herself.
âOk, a Career Day. I think we should do Career Day at the school because I checked, and we havenât had one since the only jobs for women were typists, moms, and wet nurses. I think itâd be a great way for the kids to see all of the amazing jobs they can have. Thatâs it. Thatâs my idea. Iâm done. Career Day,â Janine sat back down and smiled with Gregory.
âI could go into the plethora of reasons that wonât workâscheduling, previous failed attempts, the fact that it was your idea,â Ava listed.
âRight, but there is a way-â Janine started but was cut off by Ava, which made Lina bite her cheek and glare at Ava.
âBut Iâm just gonna go ahead and say no and save you the embarrassment,â Ava said.
âSometimes, I just wanna shove my foot so far up her ass that you can see it out of her mouth, but professionalism or whatever,â Lina told the camera crew with a groan.
Development Day had ended, and Janine and Lina started walking out together when Manny stopped them.
âHey. Janine, right? Iâm Manny, which I said up there.â Manny said, âI just wanted to say that Career Day sounded good. Itâs a good idea. I would love to hear more.â
âThank you! So you guys are new at the district?â Janine asked.
âYup. Just started over the summer. Loving it so far. Feel like weâre gonna make a lot of positive changes and do what the last administration didnât. Nobody embezzling find on my watch,â
Janine chuckled while Lina giggled, âLove that,â Janine said.
âActually, one of the things we wanted to do today was shadow a teacher. Can we shadow you?â Manny asked.
âYeah, sure,â Janine nodded, âIâm just gonna be setting up my classroom with Lina,â Janine motioned toward Lina.
âExciting!â
âIt is exciting,â Janine smiled.
âYeah, Iâm just gonna grab my coworkers. Theyâre talking to Principal Coleman over there. You guys are so lucky. You have such a good principal,â Manny smiled and walked away.
âYeah, right,â Lina rolled her eyes as she walked out when Manny caught up to them.
The five-person group started walking toward Janineâs class, and Lina couldnât help but start a conversation.
âSo, whereâd you teach before pivoting to the school district?â Lina asked.
Manny looked at Lina, âI didnât, actually. But I grew up here, though. My first-hand experience is more from when I was a student in the area.â
âOh, alright. Thatâs one of the reasons I wanted to teach at Abbott. Because I was a student in the area, as well, soâŚthis is my room,â Janine motioned towards the room.
âWhat are you making here?â Emily asked.
âA welcome back sign for the kids. Weâre gonna decorate it together so that everyone feels included. I try to implement a lot of color. Wanted to go with blue because that inspires focus.â
âAnd calm, which is so important for primary classes. I read about that in Chalkbeat,â Manny said.
âYou read Chalkbeat?â Janine asked.
Manny hummed in agreeance.
âI basically live in the comment section, soâŚâ Janine smiled.
âOh, my God. Are you @JTeagues215?â Manny smiled.
âYes! And @JTeagues267 when I wanna spice up the discourse,â Janine grinned.
âMs. Teagues, Iâm @MannyFromTheBlock. Iâm always using this emoji,â Manny did a salute.
âThatâs you! I love your comments,â Janine complimented.
âI love your comments,â Manny complimented back.
Lina felt like a third wheel, so she started walking back to her class, which caught Mannyâs eye, but he didnât comment. However, she ran into Gregory, and they started talking when Janine walked out behind her.
âHey! Fancy meeting you here,â Janine smiled at the teacher.
âOh, Iâm just bringing in the workbooks. Oh! There is a ten-for-ten sale at Nichols School Supplies, by the way.
âOh, fuck yeah,â Janine cursed, but it didnât sound right, so Lina stared at her with a deadpan look. âTrying out cursing. Still getting the hang of it. How was Baltimore?â
Lina was no longer interested and slowly headed to her classroom. When she got inside, she connected her phone to her speaker and played her playlist while fixing her classroom. She quickly got into it and started dancing fluidly as she put stuff where it should be, but jumped when she heard a small chuckle at the door. She quickly turned to see Manny with a smile on his face.
âOh, my God! Hey, Manny. What brings you in here?â Lina blushed and paused her music.
âNothing. I just wanted to come in here and say that it was very nice to meet you, and I hope we see more of each other,â Manny smiled.
âYeah, yeah. Same here,â Lina blushed, âIâm sorry you had to see me do all that,â
âNo, no. It was nice. You know how to dance,â Manny smiled, âWell, I have to be on my way out. Iâll see you later,â
âYeah. Iâll see you later,â Lina softly smiled at him.
Manny walked out, and she couldnât help but sigh and then groan at the thought of embarrassing herself in front of him.
The following day, Lina came into school and dropped her stuff off before going to Barbaraâs class to see if she needed any help, only to see that she was moving her desks. She quickly sprung into action and helped her when Simon and Emily walked in. The conversation wasnât interesting to her so she zoned out as she helped with the desks until she heard his voice.
âThe legendary Mrs. Howard and the beautiful Ms. Kim,,â Mannyâs voice rang from the door, âI havenât had a chance to connect with you yet, but I hear youâre the one,â Manny held out his hand.
âCharmed,â Barbara said with a condescending smile. Meanwhile, Lina couldnât help but softly chuckle at Barbaraâs annoyance.
âWeâre actually working on a program to get assistants in the classroom at the beginning of the school year instead of you having to request one that doesnât get here until January,â Manny explained.
âAlright. Excuse me, I have to finish some work in my classroom.â Lina smiled and left the room.
Gregory and Melissa were there with the other teachers when she got to her classroom, so she listened to their conversation. Their conversation was about resetting Ava and how Gregory would be their last resort regarding their plan of resetting Ava.
âHow do you expect me to reset Ava?â Gregory asked.
âI donât know. Flex your muscles, be whore-y. Itâs up to you,â Melissa shrugged while leaving the classroom.
Once Melissa was out of the room, Lina busted out in laughter because of the face that Gregory was making. Gregory groaned and walked out of the classroom, not feeling like being laughed at by Lina. Lina shook her head and continued with her activities when Manny walked into her class again.
âHey, Lina. How are you today?â Manny asked.
âHey. Iâm good. What about yourself?â Lina asked.
âGood. Good,â Manny smiled, âI wanted to come in here and see if I could get your number so you can, you know, send me any new ideas you possibly could have with making the school better,â Manny rubbed the back of his neck.
âOh, of course,â Lina fished her phone out of her pocket, âhere, put it in and text yourself so we can keep in touch,â
âAwesome,â Manny grinned as he took her phone, inputted his number, and texted himself, âWell, that is it for me here for now. Hopefully, Iâll see you out and about,â
âYeah. Iâd like that,â Lina blushed and watched him make his way out of her classroom, only to meet his eyes when he looked back and winked. Her blush pushed back harder on her cheeks, and she giggled.
When the day was over, Gregory, Jacob, Janine, and Lina went to Rubenstienâs for a drink. They talked about resetting Ava in the gym by blasting City Girls. Lina was laughing at the guyâs shared memory of Gregroy flexing his muscles in front of Avaâs office.
âYou flexed?â Janine asked in surprise, âWell, did you guys try just playing âBack That Azz Upâ?â
Jacob gasped, âHow did you know to do that? Wow, you really are district material,â
âOh, stop,â Janine saw Gregory and Linaâs confused faces, âSo, Manny offered me a fellowship at the district. And Iâm like 80/20 on doing it.â
âSo, youâd leave Abbott,â Gregory concluded.
âWell, yeah, but not permanently,â Janine pointed out.
âWell, Iâm happy for you,â Lina smiled at her friend.
âI am, too. And jealous. And sad. Iâm emotional, which calls for shots.â Jacob stood up and went to the bar.
âIâll come with you to help carry them,â Lina stood up. She only really left to let the teachers crush on each other alone. When she got to the bar with Jacob, she leaned on it, âWhen are those two gonna realize that they like each other and make the jump?â
âI know! Itâs like watching dough rise,â Jacob rolled his eyes.
âAnyways, I gotta tell somebody. I think Manny is so attractive!â Lina giggled.
âLiterally, same! Oh, my God. You should ask for his number!â Jacob hyped Lina up.
âI got it. He asked me for mine before he left. He said it was so I could text him any ideas I had for improving the school.â Lina smiled.
âOh, my God. He totally has a thing for you,â Jacob grinned at his friend.
âWhat? No! It canât be that,â Lina shook her head.
âUhh, yes, it could. Youâre hot and have a nice body and the greatest personality! I say ask him on a date,â Jacob shrugged.
âI donât think so. Iâm big on the guy asking, so I know heâs interested,â Lina shook her head, âMy mom always told me that, and I believe her and that ideal,â
