listen, aaravos is SOOO attentive. he probably has your cycle memorized better than YOU. he's always prepared for when you're on your period, and will approach you about it a few days before it starts

aaravos is amazing when your on your period as he never undermines you, and while he doesn't relate to your experience he definitely sympathizes with you and supports you any way he can

After Rayla first visits Ethari, he puts up mirrors around the house. They're everywhere. He does this in the hopes that Rayla will visit him again. The village believe he has gone mad, but they leave him alone.

When Runaan returns back home, he has panic attacks when he sees the mirrors. Ethari takes them all down. Because of this, he doesn't see Rayla, crying in their house as she watches Ethari comfort his husband.

Ethari will never have Rayla again, but at least he can have Runaan.

Thinking about Soren in S 1-3. (Current character obsession, obvsly been studying the wiki too.)

How he's canonically the youngest crown guard in history, tasked to protect the king at the age of 18. How other soldiers already refer to him as sir, even if they're probably older than him. (Who knows how long he's actually been a crownguard at the point of S1.) How king Harrow still dies despite his best efforts. How several other crownguards died during the assasination. How his dad then sends him to kill the two other persons he vowed to protect. How he decides to follow his own morals and vows instead. How he obviously still feels guilty about Harrows death, and admits so to Ezran. How he feels guilty about leaving Claudia but had no choice at this point.

How he then steps up again as a crownguard in the end, even ready to kill Viren to protect his king. Walking behind Ezran after the battle still ready to do his job desptite the traumatic experience he just went through and his sister dissapearing.

How he then becomes head of the Crownguard.

Every time they travel and have to sleep in an inn or anywhere that isn't either Katolis Castle or their separate home, instead of having the usual couple thing of "who always has what side of the bed," Callum always takes the side of the bed closest to the door of the inn or wherever they're staying. And that's another way he protects her, making it so if anyone dangerous or if anything bad were to happen, he'd be shielding her from it first and foremost. This also doubles as helping Rayla feel safer and more comfortable in different and unusual environments, having him always being her first defense helps calm her anxieties and makes her sleep easier

Given that Kazi is a nonbinary linguist, I bet they have some detailed thoughts on gendered language:

Kazi: Technically, I don't "use" they/them pronouns because I rarely talk about myself in the third person, so it's more accurate to say, I use I/me as my pronouns and other people use they/them pronouns for me. I used to use he/him because there is linguistic precedent for "he" as a non-gendered pronoun, but then I worried that it would be confusing, so I switched to they/them, which, by the way, has been in use as a singular pronoun for over four centuries! I briefly used "ze" but then I realized that "ze" and "she" look similar for people who rely on lipreading, because the difference between Z and S is really just a difference in voiced versus unvoiced oral sibilants, and if I'm serious about working as an interpreter, I want to make sure my pronouns are clear to the people I'm working with. So I usually just tell people to use they/them. Anyways, what are your pronouns?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the framing of Ezran compared to Viren in the dungeon scenes (and how Soren is framed with the latter), regarding what we know about AtLA really framing Zuko as the one imprisoned rather than Iroh despite Iroh being the one in jail.

I've been thinking doing a post about the show's literal framing of physical imprisonment just cause there are two shots from 3x03 and 5x08 that I think about a lot, but I wasn't thinking about Ez in the mix so time to go digging. (And yess I love that detail! I still remember watching this youtube essay about it and how exciting/illuminating it was.)

3x04 is a really interesting episode just because it sets a lot up symbolically before things reach literal standpoints (i.e. Ezran taking off one chain he's chosen — the crown, i.e. 'a child is freer than a king' — in favour of literal chains and imprisonment, sacrificing his freedom for other people's). An example is how Ezran is already shown behind bars as he prepares to give up his crown:

We see something similar with Aaravos once Viren can see him. Even though we don't Know yet that Aaravos was imprisoned (that only comes in 3x06) it shows the bars that seemingly imprison him being something he can easily pass through as he takes the next step in his plan with Viren. Viren's freedom means his freedom.

There's also some interesting things done with how Viren is presented in jail earlier on in the episode. When Aaravos is about to begin preparing his eye with little bug pal, and the eye itself, the 'bars' (the stripes in the eye's case) are prominent and total.

These emphasis on bars is shifted from as Aaravos goes to take the eye goop off, and we switch it to an emphasis on TDP's favourite light and dark motif, with Viren entirely in the dark vs Ezran in 3x05 who lies in the light. This combination of the imprisonment framing/subversion and some kind of light/dark symbolism is also frequently common. So while the chain framing for Ezran isn't really There (and he's doing the 'right' thing / isn't tethered to Freedom as a theme as much as Justice, honestly) but that sort of makes sense in its own way, favouring his light-dark symbolism contrast instead.

Case in point, in the meantime, for Ezran: Viren being in the light when Ezran comes to make the transfer, with Ezran much more in the dark in the end credits art:

We also get some nice parallels with this shot from 3x04 vs 3x01, of Viren being trapped in a circle/chain/cycle vs not (as he's being freed and simultaneously pulled deeper into Aaravos' trap as he goes).

And last but not least some framing for Viren and Ezran as they switch places, with the actual transfer having a parallel "walking in, walking out" tradeoff from 3x06:

We also get some nice set up ("sometimes a friend can help light the way!") for Bait and Soren in 3x05, and in 3x03 with Viren's visitor being just another means of control/deception through consumption rather than aid and actual sustenance (jelly tarts).

Keeping Soren shadowed, I think, isn't necessarily to make us doubt if it's him (it's not dark enough for that) but it does reaffirm us having doubts about what he's doing to do, before we see the happier turn and know we can trust him, which is Also a direct opposition to Viren's false framing with it in 3x03.

There's also Lots of great framing in the scene with Claudia, Soren, and Viren, that continually use the bars and lighting to make it look like the siblings are the ones imprisoned rather than their father and that bars symbolize the growing wedge between them. Even just the way Viren is framed with light around his head ("but we must be willing to sacrifice, even the things we love") as he portrays himself like a (false) martyr. These are the shots I always think about when watching 3x03, as referenced above.

However, Viren being placed behind bars does start to enter the framing, with the siblings being portrayed side by side (with nothing dividing them) once Claudia brings up her brother's truth:

But we go right back to the 'siblings divided by bars' symbolism once Viren is considering what to do, and then chooses the lie and gaslighting Soren. However, we never go back to Viren being portrayed without the bars to the same degree. He's trapped himself in too, which is fitting, as this is the moment he ultimately loses Soren (and Claudia) forever.

And we see this first hand in Soren's visits to the dungeon in 6x05, 6x06, and 6x08, but that might have to be a post in its own right since I'm getting close to the picture limit for this one. Part 2 to follow!

Soren hc again: The nerves in his body are all sorts of messed up since breaking his spine and it then being healed.

Soren can't feel things the way others do. The spine plays a major role when it comes to nerves and how they send messages to the brain. So when it broke, those nerves couldn't sent messages to the brain. When Claudia healed his spine, those nerves were going to suddenly be able to work out of the blue but they won't be the same because Soren was healed with Dark Magic.

So while Soren could still feels things, it's just different. Sometimes his body just wouldn't process the thing or person touching him and sometimes his body would. His nerves were all over the place due to how the Dark Magic healed his spine.

So sometimes Soren just won't realize if someone is hugging him or holding onto him if he doesn't see them(the draggang + Corvus & Terry). This causes bets to start to see who can go the longest without being noticed. So far Corvus is in the lead with Rayla not far behind, Terry is right behind her while Ezran if after him and Callum is in last place.

Soren doesn't mind much because he enjoys the affection. It only becomes an issue when he suddenly becomes aware of them and he ends up getting startled and does try to punch them or pull out his sword. Because he thinks he just alone but all of a sudden he feels a sudden weight on him.

The only person who doesn't almost get attacked is Corvus because Soren is used to the extra weight of Corvus. They cuddle at night and Soren will use Corvus as a blanket.
