sort of an offshoot of that post about video game characters but I think I've mentioned before the third person v. first person split in D&D, namely, do you say "I attack it with my scimitar" or "Drizzt attacks with his scimitar". This is a well-known thing in TTRPGs, I'm sure you can find more intelligent discussion about it, but it's come up for me specifically in that a lot of old-school D&D players skew hard towards third person and often they are less interested in actual play, because they see D&D as a narrative tool. There's no self-inserts; they are narrating the exploits of a guy they made. And so the parasocial elements (which are not necessarily bad, it just depends, and that's another post) have no appeal, and even things like accents don't really.

I don't think third person vs. first person necessarily means "not a self insert vs. self insert." I switch between the two and often use first person. But I don't feel like any D&D character I've played is a self-insert. They have aspects of me, sure, because of course they do, I need to be able to play them and try to think like them, but I think in a game where death and failure are really possible and where you must collaborate and where your options are rather limited - because even in D&D, they are limited by the type of game it is - it's actually vital to separate yourself out from your character.

It comes down to something I've said a lot about so many things in fiction (but yeah, this does bleed into real life): are you able to accept a character who is not like you? Are you able to accept a character who might make wildly different choices than you would? Is your capacity to empathize or see a character as a person limited by them specifically hitting some demographic or philosophical targets you have constructed? Can you, even in a low risk, fictional environment, let yourself be different from how you are.

this seems very silly but I think I may have alluded to Justin McElroy talking about not being able to play fat characters in most games, and so he often just plays characters who do not look a thing like him. He often plays as a woman of color. (I don't recall where this came up? I think it might have been on an ancient polygon video or maybe commentary on one of the TAZ seasons? I'd love to find it again). And I think that's actually really great that this was his instinct. I don't want to diminish the importance of RPGs and TTRPGs for self-discovery; obviously it's been a place for many people to explore gender and sexuality, especially, and I do not want to take away the ability for someone to play as a woman in a game before you feel like you can live as a woman publicly in real life (and notably my issues with the BG3 and Inquisition player characters are not ones of gender/sex/race, ie, I think it is personality and background that might need to be more pre-determined). But yeah, if you cannot connect with characters who aren't like you that's a problem, and it does feel a little frustrating that we know that centering a self-insert OC type makes for a worse story and people still want that.

I've always been intrigued by pre-made sheets in TTRPGs where you are limited in some way, not in a dumb "oh my god you can't play a druid bc I'm a weird vindictive dude mad that your nature magic beats my weaponry" way but just as an exploration of having to walk a mile in other people's shoes and to be a person other than one that you created to exist within your comfort zone. Because a lot of people aren't Justin, and do play themselves or as close to it as they can, regardless of what is happening around them, and I think that is a mistake.

ok real talk though. nycc was so fun. cosplaying was SO fun. three(???) people stopped me to ask for a picture(???!!!) thrilling AND confusing. like what do they do with the picture. LOL

the line for the cr panel was crazy but i didn't mind standing around a bunch u got to see everybody else's cool cosplay… so many jesters… some REALLY cool esseks... also a gideon and harrow!!!

ppl kept being like :D hi taako! out of nowhere and i was like omg! i AM taako! was very thrilling to be recognized. and whenever two taz cosplayers saw each other we would be like. oh yeah. even from like across the room. LOL

and the taz gn panel was very fun obvs they billed it as having only carey pietsch and ben wilgus so it was v exciting when the boys also showed up. and my friend (lup) and i were right at the front too… third row… so close… i truly did not expect to see new kravitz pages... and they were such good pages... he made such a dumb skull face... i can't wait for u guys to see it...

also we got to the live show super early and ended up getting like fourth row seats too. i understood 0% of the country music references but i liked when they sang a song. 10/10 would go again

“You should invest in a hat,” Moxley calls, grinning as he leans against his classroom door. “Cover that big ol’ bald head.”

“Get – stop that,” Claudio demands. “You’re nearly as bald as me now.”

“Not yet,” Mox says.

“Did you take my hat?” Claudio demands. Another minute and he’ll be late, and his third graders will make him do burpees with them. He doesn’t hate burpees. He hates burpees in front of judgmental third graders who throw his affirmations back in his pace.

And that’s when the assistant principal, Mr. Taz, walks by.

“You took my headband you little sh – hello, Aria, didn’t expect to see you inside!” He fixes his glare at Mr. Taz over his tiny blonde student’s head.

“I’m going to the bathroom!” Aria says, beaming.

“Good, good,” Claudio says, too distracted as she pats Aria on her shoulder. “Mr. Taz! You know that’s mine! Everyone knows that’s my headband!”

“Finders keepers, Castagnoli,” Mr. Taz says. “Keep track of your things when you’re in the teacher’s lounge and wouldn’t have this problem.”

“Aria,” he says, high fiving the pocket sized student’s neon pink gloved hands, “I have to go steal my headband back from Mr. Taz. You understand.”

Claudio can hear Moxley laughing in the background, but he doesn’t care. He will regain his headband. And he will do it in front of dozens of judgmental third graders.

Aw, hehe. Well, TAZ stands for The Adventure Zone! It's a podcast hosted by the McElroys where they play TTRPGs together which usually end up being really fun, well-written, goofy-ass, tearjerker stories, and it started with them playing D&D! That campaign is called TAZ: Balance now and it is one of my favorite stories of all time. With some of my favorite characters of all time! And the whole thing just means a lot to me. I used to make tons of art of it back in the day, heh.

It'll always have a special place in my heart, and it's a big, big recommend. (There is also a graphic novel series on progress of it!! It's real real good too.)

Also, I got one of my names, Kepler, from one of their other campaigns - TAZ: Amnesty! Kepler, West Virginia is the town that story is set in. ^v^

Mirian

Mirian was originally a bug alien type creature who was an NPC for an adventure I was running on an rp forum! So when I switched to designing her as a human, I made the potentially misguided attempt to try to keep her overall value scheme and a few other design hints? I.e. very pale eyes and somewhat darker skin, and big old glasses in place of the v. big mirrored eyes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On the plus side, it has at least shaped her human backstory in interesting ways! Even if I somewhat regret the ocular albinism thing — it feels like a cop out to conveniently have her on the very upper end of good vision among people with albinism, there are enough misconceptions about albinism as it is. :’D I’ve been waffling about retconning it for years now.

Other than that it was all vibes based. I asked my brain “somewhat unhinged lesbian scientist?” and it went “Short. Short is good,” and here we are. xD

Ithadel

I already had purple and grey associated with rock creatures in my brain (my other OC Brian), so that was probably part of his overall color scheme. Goliath (?) from Gargoyles was probably haunting my subconscious, too, even though I’ve never watched more than an episode or two of the show. xD

But mostly, I was on a crest of my eternal “bat wings are versatile limbs! They grab things! And climb! And walk with them! And it’s neat!!” kick. So then I was having fun thinking about prehensile limbs in general, and gave him prehensile feet — because hey, wings, maybe they can hunt like raptors?

I also had Medusa on the brain — not literally, I don’t know much about the actual myth, but just… general petrification and turning things to stone thoughts. Thus the stinger (paralysis).

As for his human design, for whatever reason that’s… just what felt right the first time I started trying to sketch him and make picrews, hah. No thoughts head empty!

Oscar

So this isn’t strictly visual design, but there were two things on my brain when I was first designing Oscar, and those were:

1) Duck Newton from TAZ Amnesty’s abysmal lying

2) Maurice from Disney’s animated Beauty and the Beast

Which. Mostly just informed his general flustered and blustery speech patterns in my head, hah. xD And idk how well that will be preserved in writing moving forward. As for his appearance… once again, it kind of just formed? Not a whole lot of conscious decision making.

The achondroplasia was very intentional, though. He was originally a D&D character, and I imagined him visually how I imagined him, but I also very much imagined him with a human attitude and cultural background. Plus I wanted the variant human stats for backstory & class building reasons. So… even in fantasy settings, he is definitely not a dwarf. :)
