Remember. Remember why you're here, why you do what you do. Remember the feelings you had, that first drove you to come this far. Remember all the pain you felt, all the joy you had, all the sadness in your heart.

Ek khat mere "PYAR" ke naam
Ek khat meri "JAAN" ke naam
Uske naam jiska ab tak naam Tak nahi pta
Jisse na mulaqat huyi na baat huyi....
I don't know what you are like , cause we haven't even spent a moment together , so this letter will be my inner monologue...
Ye khat mere ishq ke liye , my everything , my muse , my poetry .....
From me Kaya ek kaviyitri aur lekhika
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you are reading this letter Jaan then I already know that I am pretty sure about you.... I even wrote it in my journal but in the fear that I can lose it so thought of posting it here.... It will be preserved here
Dear muse,
So how's life ,I am not sure about my age then but I'll take it as somewhere in my twenties. I don't know how many people did I have to go through to reach you....
I tried to find you in so many faces but at the end "GOD" always saved the day....
Cause my soul was meant to cling with yours....
Cause Kaya is meant to be yours....
Also am I still the same irritable , clingy , over possessive , overwhelmed and what not.... One thing I know is that my love for reading and writing would be same....
And future Kaya I hope you have achieved the dreams you saw as me.... I hope you conquered all of them....
You know the most beautiful thing about time is that it passes...
And the most heartwrenching thing about time is also that it passes....
I don't know how I met you but whatever the reason was I thank that reason.... I cherish you for forever..... Also did you see my journals as I always thought that my future partner will get to see them...
Pretty vague isn't it....
I can't believe that I am penning this down sitting in my room while you are somewhere doing something else....
I hope I am a "HOME" to you and so are you to me.... It's not necessary that home is a place, it can be a person too where I can be unapologetically me , where no one will judge me for who I am..... And so I always wanted to be a home to someone....
I don't know how you look physically but you must be very handsome I am not saying this by fluke cause I know you have the most beautiful soul ever , soul like yours was specially crafted by "GOD" , to meet mine , to intertwine with mine....
I always connected myself to moon cause why be someone's sun when you can be their moon and light up their life in the darkest hour...
Whenever you see the stars and moon remember that they bind me together with everyone and whenever you feel alone just look at them somewhere I am doing that too...
They bind me to you....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whenever I'll look at the moon or the stars they'll connect me to you...
I wrote many things about eyes and I believe then too I believe in the art of eye contact... When I'll look in your eyes I wanna drown in them drown to my death and for once I don't want to find the shore I wanna drown in the depths of them and die....
I am clinging to the only hope of harness in my life which is filled with darkness... That's my dreams , my aspirations and the hope of finding you otherwise I would have died way back....
I hope I told you each and everything about me , my reasons for my nature , I hope you managed to remove my mask of outgoing , bubbly , talkative af girl and managed to see the broken beyond repair girl....
Being the way I am everyone always thought how my life is perfect but I had my own share of difficulties , I had my own problems....
I hope I make you feel loved I make you feel like home and I hope , I am a person to you with whom you can be yourself and you can share anything with me....
I wanna do many things with you like watching sunset , having a golgappe eating competition , writing with you , reading books to you , playing aankh micholi with you , going on a hiking trip with you and the list goes on.... Whenever I say I wanna do something with you just ask me - what not Kaya you have a huge bucket list....
But how can I not wish all this with you , you make me feel prettier than a sunset..
"How can I love you in a usual way
You are unusual reserved
Prettier than the stars
Brighter than the sun....
Love you are the moon to my dark sky...
Love you are like water to my parched mouth....
You are the died flower between the pages of my book...
And I want you to be only mine..."
Tumblr media
I want our love to be forever for an eternity where even all this seems small....
After death the human brain lives on for 7 minutes replaying all the memories, please make my those 7 minutes blissful and peaceful....
I want to click many Polaroids and pics with you then we'll do journaling out of them together....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I hope I didn't forget to give you the bracelet I made for you....
And although I believe you are a reader , but if not I would have made you one by now , if you are my man it's mandatory to be a reader but ofc no pressure (🔪)
i wanna be the one you rely on I wanna be the one you turn to whenever everything is a mess...
Aur fir mai to "Chand Si Mehbooba" hu...
क्या यही प्यार है,
हाँ यही प्यार है
दिल तेरे बिन कहीं लगता नहीं
वक्त गुजरता नहीं
This is my POV for you..... <3
You know you are my"kuch nahi" whenever someone asks "kya soch rahi ho ?"
Now imagine me playing a guitar and singing this to you accha don't imagine I'll sing cause I'll be there when you'll be reading this....
The day we met
Frozen I held my breath
Right from the start
I knew that I'd found a home for my heart
Beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave?
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
i hope you liked this song cause these are my feelings for you.....
I'll love you till the end of time...
You are my muse love you are my poetry the poetry I tried writing so many times...
And I think my love for you can't be described in words it's pure very pure....
And please take my heart and never return it to me for it was ever yours , ever yours to break , ever yours to love or caress....I won't dedicate songs to you cause I already made playlists for you....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if I ever say something in my anger please ignore it my rage is harmful but I can never stay angry on the people I love...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love you like rain loves the land inevitably it falls for ground everytime and so will I do I'll always fall for you in every universe in every metaverse in every situation in every reality....
I want to give you a bone crushing hug....
I wanna kiss you senselessly , aimlessly and passionately....
And great now -
"I am homesick for arms that have never held me"
Tumblr media
You see Jaan , I'll love you till all the stars in the universe burn out but you know it's a lie cause I'll love you even after they burn out...
If the stars burn out I'll give you my moon..
If the moon dies I'll give you my sun
Heck I'll give you my everything even my universe and will find you in every reality...
So if you ever think of running away from me trust me you wouldn't be able to cause we are both bound to each other by the red string of fate....
"In the Quiet nights I love you
In the rainy plights I miss you
The spilled ink of my pen miss you
The parchment of my heart wanna kiss you"
I have always been an eternal part of you , you might be somewhere but I don't know where , it's like you are near yet far and it's a fact bizarre...
I love you like Ava loves Alex
Like Bridget love Rhys
Like Jude love Cardan
Like Naina love Bunny
Like Anjali love Rahul
And then we'll set an example
Like Kaya love her Jaan....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now I think I have spoken enough
So signing off Jaan
With love always,
Kaya

ooohh so two bollywood songs that remind me of Sunjae and Sol, and their story 🥺🥺 Haan tu hai and Teri meri kahani 🫠
Speaking of songs, it's been a while since I've liked a kdrama ost enough to listen to outside of the dramas. But lovely runner osts are so good. My top faves are all of eclipse songs, and monologue. 💛💙

Raghuvan, teri raah nihare
Chapter 10, part 1
s/n- hey guys, this is the last chapter of my first ever series. Even I am excited to write, thanks to @vijayasena , and since it's kind of huge i am gonna make it a two part fic.
yeh teri aur meri mahaubbat hayaat hai
Akhtar stood by the end of the door. The crowd allowed him to hide from Adikavya and still witness everything. Ram pulled out a ring, sliding it up her finger. The crowd cheered, relatives, friends, cousins. So many relations but not one person close, not one person any of them could talk to. Adikavya pulled the ring from the cushiony box, sliding it up Ram's finger. It was tight. Ram hastily stuck it so it wouldn't fall, just for the sake of ritual and practices. It was visible on their faces, Adikavya wanted to probably run away, and Ram just wanted to get this done. For someone who's going to spend the end of their lives together, they weren't a very joyous couple. They've had their moments together, yes, but Adikavya's swollen face was still more acceptable than the sheer frustration on Ram's.
Adikavya has given the puppet string of her life to fate. Any decision she would make now would be futile, resulting in only one thing, marriage with Ram.
It's surprising how many faces this relationship has seen, but mutual respect and romance was never one of them. She wished he'd leave, go away, he stayed and when he wished he didn't have to see her anymore, she helped him. The curves in the puzzles were too rigid for them to fit.
Akhtar took a deep breath. He knew that even if it wasn't Ram, or anyone, it would never be him anyways. The conversation he had with Sita, or even, the monologue he had, enlightened his own self about a lots of things. Akhtar took a deep breath, crumpling and throwing away one of the two bus tickets he had for the next day.
-----------------------------------------
har lamha ismein jeena
Sita laid in her bed next morning, the slow moving fan like a lubricant to her fast moving thoughts. The window was open, cool air making it's way down her room. She remembered Babai didn't utter a word as she told him about everything. How he never dared to look at her. Not a single universe will hold a reality where she is married to Ram. The blue of her room has started to be less vibrant. She couldn't sleep last night or the night before, the constant moving memories keeping her eyes open. Sita sighed, got up, and went to do the house chores. Laying around will not help her anyhow. It was a Saturday too.
On the other hand, Ram was restless, he paced up and down his room, staring the neatly folded sherwani on the bed. His haldi was done in the morning, as he stood in the center of his room with a yellow tainted vest and dhoti, his body shining golden brown. "Leave the city? No, Babai will be disappointed". He began his homely marathon again, when Jangu came in the room. "Tell Adikavya everything" he muttered to himself, when Jangu erupted- "She already knows everything" Ram sighed, turning on his heels. Ram sat down on the bed, moving around will not help him anyhow.
Adikavya stood by the balcony, her curls falling behind her ears gently swaying with the motion of the wind. She had no choice in this. She turned and leaned back on the railing, rubbing her face. She can't even scream in this house. Sometimes she wished to run away. But then where to? And to whom? Although, all of those question seems less concerning than this marriage itself. And of course, the cousins, giggling, swarmed in, never leaving the bride alone.
mukaddar ki baat hai
------------------------
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow on the floral decorations that adorned the porch of Adikavya's home. The air buzzed with excitement as family and friends gathered, dressed in vibrant hues, ready to witness the union of two souls in a celebration that promised to be unforgettable. Adikavya, draped in a delicate red lehenga, awaited her moment. The embroidery on her attire sparkled under the lights, and the mehendi designs on her hands told tales of love and commitment. The air was charged with joy, laughter, and the spirit of celebration. The beats of the dhol resonated in every heart, and the colorful dance of the relatives set the stage for an evening of revelry. Amidst the grandeur and celebrations, the wedding was not just an event; it was a tapestry woven with love, traditions, and the promise of a beautiful journey ahead.
Or that's what everyone thought.
Four people were tied with handcuffs, unable to do anything for themselves. The wedding looked like as if the most beautiful thing to ever happen from outside, but the wretched emotions and crumpled hopes said something else. What is always right, is not always necessary. Right now, Ram and Adikavya can be wedded and tie a knot that no one else will be able to break without gaining any attention or insult. Divorce? Adikavya will face a rejection from society. Cheating? Ram will face a rejection from society. Not showing up to wedding? Their families will face a rejection from society. There was no way out. Until someone showed up, broke their marriage and showed the truth about their children to the families. But who will take such a risk?
It was already evening. Ram wished for a miracle, a falling star or a severe earthquake. Ram gazed over the golden waves of ganga, his sight automatically following up the walls of Sita Mahal. He didn't even know when Babai came in the room, but all he saw was Babai closing the window and the wooden and metal sound of windowsill scraping. "Get ready" was all he said.
_______________________
Sita stood by the flowing water of Ganga, the golden light reflected, throwing an image of the moving waves on her. It was already evening, so she should get ready. Her anklets jingled as she stepped in her room, the loneliness echoing. Sita was not unfamiliar with the feeling, the dread of getting ready, dancing in front of men who had no courtesy for emotions or any sentient. She missed his brown eyes, and the soft looks, his sight that never left her eyes. Akhtar was right, she has started to think about him when she isn't thinking about anything. There was physical pain in her heart, seeping in her stomach and throat, wanting to burst through her eyes.
The chatter has already started to be audible, when Sita entered the court. Her golden lehenga matched the shining glass dome, her face bright as the moon. Yet it looked like the soft winds of sadness had pulled a dark, nighty cloud over it. The pakhawaj players were ready, and so was the evening. It was time for her to dance and continue on with her job. Like every Saturday, once a week, four times a month, and fifty two times a year. Sita danced on her routine, her hands splayed in an artistic manner which only resembled the beauty of her dance. Her body moved with the beat, the taal, but her mind couldn't. Her mind only repeated the things she has been suppressing ever since Akhtar left.
She started taking turns on her heel- one, two, three, four, five, and that's when her body and mind started absolutely deviating.
“What if you never come here ever again?”
Another turn.
"you are going to regret it for your life"
Then another.
"No one will come between us"
Then another.
"you are going to find everything in the world that is even remotely close to him"
Then another.
"Just thinking about it isn't enough, Sita"
Then another.
She tumbled over, by disbalance, landing straight on her palms on the floor.
The crowd was shook. The most delicate dancer, the strongest person ever known to the girls has fallen in front of the audience. Some men hollered, and some knew better to be quiet. Haala rushed over to Sita.
"Didi! What's wrong?" She kept a soothing hand on Sita's shoulder, to find her body breaking down to her tears.
------------------------------------------------
The scene encapsulated the essence of joy, unity, and the timeless celebration of love that makes this wedding truly extraordinary. The baraat was ready to go. Ram saw himself in front of mirror one last time, and this isn't how he planned his wedding. He thought he'd be happy, content, excited, ready to hop on the horse anytime. He knew that if Babai had decided someone for him, she would be a good wife and daughter in law. But what if even she wasn't ready to be? The air was filled with the rhythmic beats of the dhol, the joyous notes of shehnai, and the energetic dancing of family and friends.
A woman appeared, as golden as a crown, huffing, standing on the door.
Jangu knew in an instant who she was and he knew that if Babai saw her, there will be a chaos unavoidable by anyone. Jangu pulled her to a silent spot, unnoticed by anyone. When he confirmed that Babai was not, in fact, home, he quietly sent her to Ram's room. They didn't have time.
Sita hesitated before knocking on Ram's door. The yellow and orange flowers, brown door and red walls felt energetic, not calming her nerves. Jangu rapidly slapped the door, earning a small "come in" from Ram. Sita's breath hitched. Ram sounded different with her, just not like this. But it's been so long since she has heard the voice. Jangu pushed the door open. Ram stood in a white and golden sherwani, embroidery of red on it. His white pagdi sat proudly on the chair, it's peak fluffed and pointed. Ram looked back at the silent visitor, only to find his beloved looking a bride- to him, at least. Ram has never, in so long, ever has seen Sita dressed in anything but a simple pastel saree. She had tear stuck in the crevices of her cheeks, her eyes bright red, big and wet. Her lips looked bitten and plump. Sita was one of the girls that looked pretty when cry.
kehti hai ishq duniya jise, meri jaaneman
Ram gently slipped his large, warm hand under Sita's huge earring, cupping her cheek. She leaned into his palm, another tear slipping down, meeting his thumb. "I can't" the dam broke, the pain in throat finally making its way out. "I don't have the heart to let you go. I can't do this to myself or even you." She croaked, and put her hands on his chest "Tell me you love me" Sita's eyes showed everything, the expectations, the hopes and the search for truth.

4 & 8 for Meri, 12 & 18 for Celeste :)
Hiee ty for the ask!!! :)))
4. Regardless if something happened or not, which Aedra or Daedra would hate them the most, and why?
oh by the end of the main quest + tribunal dlc Meri and Azura have BEEF. Meri has a problem with Azura from day one; she doesn’t like daedra to begin with, she resents being drawn into a prophecy against her will, and especially after the cavern of the incarnate she feels bitter that Azura is willing to throw her life away as part of a long chain of dead Nerevarines until she gets what she wants.
Azura is willing to let all this go until the end of the tribunal dlc. She shows up after you kill Almalexia and has a monologue about Almalexia’s nature” and how she “can’t help” but betray those she loves and true or not Meri is in no state to hear it and just starts ripping into her. She says some things that are incredibly insulting which triggers Azura’s well documented pride and is punished for it. Though Azura gives her a small amount of mercy for her service and doesn’t like, kill her over it.
Ideally they will never run into each other again👍
8. What’s their lowest/weakest skill that could be a fatal flaw? Or what’s their biggest weakness?
She doesn’t know how to manage her emotions or take care of herself which leads to complete burnout. Or, worse burnout, since her base state is perpetual emotional and social burnout that she’s just learned to live with. When it gets to be too much she turns to substances, isolation, and meltdowns because girlie has not learned one single healthy coping mechanism in her whole miserable life!
Physically she’s just fragile. She’s hard to hit but if you get a few good ones in she’s in serious trouble.
12. What’s their most controversial opinion(s)?
Celeste doesn’t think Martin is a good fit for Emperor.🫢 She loves him ofc but the whole main quest she’s thinking damn we’re gonna need to get this guy a LOT of good advisors because he’s not gonna be able to make critical empire wide decisions or politick with other leaders to save his life. She never says any of this out loud, just silently judges from afar as is her way.
18. Where do they fit on the morality chart?
Probably neutral good? She tends toward the lawful but when it comes down to it she values her own morality and decision making more than written law.
Questions here

clef for the character ask game thing :-)
clef my horrid little issues man. I think abt him so much
fav thing: even just sticking to the few fundamental things that are always true about him hes such a layered character. I love how hes never not being pulled apart by conflicting alllegiances to his designated veil-upkeeping organization and the people he cares about, i love that hes implied to be able to perceive other timelines to an extent, i love that he has a funny hat. so much to dig your fingers into with this guy
least fav thing: listen every facet of the scp community is some flavor of weird about him im not gonna single out one
favorite line: I mean, it could be worse, right? At least you're safe in here. It's not like the desks are coming alive to kill you now, is it? Oh wait, yes they are. The FUCKING DESKS ARE GOING TO KILL YOU.
brOTP: HIM AND ADAMS FOREVER but like in the same way people ship succession characters i need them to inflict maximum psychic harm on each other. for tav-666 secret santa which isnt really secret at all bc tav-666 is two people but clef insists on it adams gets him a mug that says worlds greatest grandpa
OTP: I have been informed that i am "the clefdraki guy". sorry to everyone about that. kondraki we could have been people monologue from yesterday does hit hard unfortunately
nOTP: /
random headcanon: Insufferably good at strategy games, especially chess. Go-to alcohol is brandy. Has never been seen wearing the same shirt twice.
unpopular opinion: I think he's a lot more hinged than people think, hes very firmly under the thumb of the foundation and the way he tends to act is him lashing out within the parametres hes given, see him having a fairly sensible reaction to duke till dawn, unlike rights, bright, kain etc. He's one of the least loose cannons here. I rlly like interpretations of him where hes kind of a bitter old man wrapped in 6+ layers of flashy defense mechanisms
songs: death on two legs by queen is for sure on his murder playlist. stuart the dead milkmen is my voiceclaim for him forever and always. pink and blue tmg makes me think about ukulele and meri really hard.
fav pic: @/flebus draws a really really good clef

also as someone who loves to slap together memes whenever an idea pops into my head, can confirm that authors love when you make memes for their fics 👍
okay we need to have an intervention.
i've noticed that people don't leave the same kind of unhinged compliments under fanfics that visual artists usually receive (eg, "i want to eat your art"), so i've come up with a list that you need to start employing when your friends send you their WIPs and when your favorites update on ao3 but you're having a hard time commenting something that sounds intelligent and you still want to support them
"you're like if [famos author] (eg, Victor Hugo if the fic is angst) was into [fandom]"
"well THIS has been added to my pre-sleep daydream schedule"
"this fic invaded my mind and consumed my brain like a spore"
"I'M LOSING SLEEP OVER THIS ONE, FOLKS"
"yOu'Ve AlReAdY lEfT kUdOs HeRe"
"this fic has me scratching at my yellow wallpaper, it's so good"
"this fic has me checking under my floorboards for the heart of a kind man i murdered, it's so good"
"i'm making my parents read this"
"i know only one chapter is out so far, but i'm going to print this out, staple it together, and put it on my bookshelf next to the canon material"
"this fic gave me another mental illness"
(you can only do this one once) "i made an ao3 account specifically to bookmark this"
"i'm going to print this out so i can eat the words on the paper"
and a couple that are just nice (without the feral nature):
"i made a custom playlist to listen to while i read this fic"
"this fic reminds me of [song]"
"i really liked the part where [x], it really stuck with me"
"i really liked this line, [quote the line,] it was so well-written!"
artists: draw fanart of the fic!! it doesn't matter if you think your art skills are good and it doesnt matter if it's just a sketch!! let the author see it!!
make a moodboard!! for the fic!! let the author see it!!

GRAAAAHHH i'm always so dissatisfied with how I communicate who Meridian "is," but I guess the answer is, like, it's complicated? It's hard to get into the meat of why they're the way they are without just saying the secret out loud. Really, Mery doesn't even really understand this themself for a good while.
And yeah, it is intentionally ambiguous for a while. I could lay out all the hints we get until we really know, but where's the fun in that? But man is it frustrating to not be able to explain what's so interesting about them to me.
One thing I do think is fun at least is that with them as the most common POV character, we can see this contrast between their inner monologue and the way other characters perceive them. And I think (or I hope at least, lol) that this will also be evident when they appear during other characters' POV sections.
Tjong is similar in the sense that it takes a certain reveal to make it clear why he's,, like that,,, (coincidentally, the same reveal is also the first big hint we get about Mery. Huh!) but his personality is a lot more straightforward. And he's a terrible liar.

Review: Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
It’s been a while since I saw a solid, sumptuous ‘hindi picture’ — the kind that makes you whistle in the seats, out-sing the sound system, and dance in the aisles. I walked into Rocky Aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani expecting anything but that, since the promos had convinced me that Karan Johar had taken a sharp left into the David Dhawan school of filmmaking. Much to my surprise, the film delivered on all those characteristics, and delivered something even those ‘hindi pictures’ rarely do - it was up to date. It’s always interesting to see a filmmaker take a look back his(or her) own filmography, and see what they felt they need to change; Sooraj Barjatya had done it with Uunchai just last year, and failed miserably. Unfortunately, more often than not, this relook starts off with great gumption and falls prey to habit somewhere along the way. We are all victims of habit, hoping to transform into better, more mature, more self aware people. Johar uses this transformation as a narrative trope in this film, and maneuvers it with a lightness of touch that hints at his own self awareness. He challenges a lot of the problems his earlier films had(fatphobia, misogyny, homophobia). A replay of the “keh diya na, bas keh diya” quip from K3G had me and several others in my audi wolf-whistling. Through the film, we see transformations — characters explaining their mistakes, promising to reform, and changing into better people. In his older films, this transformation was spurred on by astronomical difficulty - in K3G, Shah Rukh Khan had go into a ten-year-log exile before Amitabh Bachchan would ask a for forgiveness with fairly gaslight-ey undercurrents; in My Name is Khan, it took a hurricane for Kajol to realise her love for Shah Rukh Khan and apologise. But though delayed, those transformations were always instant. Here, it’s simple - a monologue may unveil hidden reservoirs of confidence in characters, but they undergo full arcs before they can express themselves freely, making transformations seem neither arbitrary or abrupt. Beware though, because by the time Rani delivers speech number eight(I counted) to a character about how they must break free of the patriarchy, I was ready to throw hands. The self-referencing is also turned into a narrative trope (you can spot a reference a minute). There are countless callbacks to old films and old songs - my favourites being a callback to Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar from Hum Dono, which left me as full of awe as when Pankaj Kapur had used it in Mausam; and a character announcing her freedom by singing Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai from Guide. It made me so happy that after years of self-referencing himself in films like I Hate Luv Storys, Shaandaar and Dostana, Karan Johar has learnt the difference between winking and wanking at us. The references serve a purpose beyond pure nostalgia. The older ones invoke a softer, more romantic time, without dating the film. Even the newer, more light-hearted references serve a purpose - the use of Aaja Meri Gaadi Mein Baith Ja adds to Rocky’s West Delhi/Greater Gurgaon persona. I found myself chuckling at the use of Meri Pyaari Bindu from Padosan in the Namit Das track. The only reference they could have done without was the use of Suno Suno Miss Chatterjee in a romantic moment which needed more softness, and less foot-tapping. This invoking of the past is reflected in the writing as well - the characters don’t converse with each other. they speak in dialogue. Characters say things like “Nazar kharab aapki aur pardah kare hum?” and “Aapne mujhe sanskaar nahin diye, ahankar diya hai”. They have so much swagger, you can taste them. The showdowns in the film are satisfyingly melodramatic, and one would expect no less - characters are engaged in such over-the-top conflict that the skies thunder in disapproval. Unfortunately though, the same drama was missing in the songs. Tum Kya Mile and Ve Kamleya are beautiful melodies(even if terrifyingly banal in their arrangement), but Dhindora Baaje Re, which plays out as a pivot for the story just pre-climax was upsettingly underwhelming and insipid. It may not have worked in Pritam’s favour that we hear his music in the same sitting as some of the most memorable tunes from Hindi films. As for the performances, they were just outstanding - Ranveer and Alia both pull off two very difficult things - Ranveer plays an outlandish, uncouth, near repulsive character while endearing us to him, and Alia shows us both her condescention/amusement at Rocky and her endearment to him. I think Ranveer will get more praise for his character - it’s the kind of character that shouts out at you to tell you how well the actor is acting, but Alia does a better job — Rani is put in situations which call for ‘dialoguebaazi’ but nothing seems contrived or put-on. I was particularly impressed by a scene where she comes up with a solution for a problem in Rocky’s family business, but does so without the magic-wand waving of a Hrishikesh Mukherjee character. Instead, she plays the line with an undercurrent of surprise - as though she came upon the answer by accident. As for the million dollar question - do the leads share chemistry? The answer is a resounding YES. They share chemistry, and more importantly, comfort. It’s not the electric kind(like SRK-Kajol in all those other KJo films or Ranbir-Anuska in Ae Dil). Alia and Ranveer just fit. They share an easy comfort with each other, and we understand that they are meant to be with each other, because they make each other happy, and sometimes, it’s just that simple. The supporting cast is also stellar - Shabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chaudhury, Churni Ganguly, Aamir Bashir, Kshitee Jog and Anjali Anand are such fun. I did, however want to check on Dharmendra, who seemed like the light was going to go out of his eyes any minute. Jaya Bachchan seemed to be borrowing her mannerisms from Chacha Choudhary comics and Amrish Puri, trembling in anger and staring into the distance while delivering heavy duty dialogues. The film does justify this bigness and melodrama to a great extent though. There are no normal locations, normal clothes and normal people in this world, only magic. Johar’s idea of a chandni chowk akhara is laughable, but the colours are so vibrant and the lights so bright that you go along for the ride. Why complain about the lack of realism when you are being treated to some of the most beautiful people and places on film? There are enough things to complain about - the bengali family was annoyingly free of fault(something I’m sure all the Bhadralok had no problem with); I found the Shabana-Dharmendra track unconvincing and problematic, even though it was charming; and the Dhindora Baaje Re sequence was a bit too flashy for my liking - but all in all, Rocky Aur Rani is the best thing I did with three hours in my day, and I left the cinema hall with my heartbeat thudding in my ears, my soul nourished and my love for hindi cinema replenished.
