Move To A Darker Place
This is a story of Man Vs. Machine.

Last March, my father attempted to file his Taxes.
My beloved father is a Boomer. Unlike most Boomers, my father is rather handy with technology because he was one of the people that had a not-insignificant hand in Developing a hell of a lot of it. He was studying Computer Science at Cal Poly before the computer science degree existed. I have many fond childhood memories of skipping through the aisles of various electronic and computer part warehouses while Dad described something that either terrified the staff or made them worship him as a God. He taught himself how to use his smartphone. Internationally.
So when he saw the option to file digitally with the IRS through the âID.meâ program, he leapt at the chance to celebrate the Federal Government finally entering the Digital Age.
It was all going swimmingly for about six hours, until he was ready to file and the system told him that it needed to verify his identity.Â
âVery Well.â said my father, a man unafraid of talking to himself and getting something out of the conversation. âIt wouldnât do for me to get someone elseâs return.â
The System told him that it needed him to take a âDigital Image IDâ.
a.k.a: A Selfie.
âA-ha!â Dad beams. Dad is very good at taking selfies. He immediately pulled out his phone, snapped one, and tried to upload it.
Please log into your Id.me Account and use the provided app to submit your Digital Image ID. The System clarified.
âOh. You should have said so.â Dad pouted, but used his phone to log onto the ID.me account, do the six security verification steps and double-checked that the filing looked the same as it did on the desktop, gave the IRS like nine permissions on his phone, and held up the camera to take his Federal Privacy Invasion Selfie.
Please align your face to the indicated grid. Said The System, pulling up a futuristic green-web-of-polygons approximation.
âOoh, very Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry would HATE this!â Dad said cheerfully, aligning his face to the grid. My father is a bit⌠cavalier, when it comes to matters of personal information and federal government, because heâs been on FBI watchlists since the late 60âs when he was protesting The Vietnam War and Ronald Regan before heâd broken containment. Alas.
Anyway, there is very little information the federal government does not have on him already, but heâs as good at stalking the FBI as they are at stalking him, and had worked out a solution:Â He has something approaching a friendship with the local Federal Agent (Some guy named âLarryâ. Allegedly), and got Larry hooked on Alternative Histories and Dadâs collection of carefully-researched âthere is very likely buried treasure hereâ stories, and Larry is loath to bother his favorite Historical Fanfiction author too much.
But I digress.
After thinking for a minute, The System came back with an Error Message. Please remove glasses or other facial obstructions.
And here is where the real trouble began.
See, my father wears glasses that do substantially warp the appearance of his face, because he is so nearsighted that he is legally blind without them. His natural focal point is about 4 inches in front of his nose. While Dad can still take a selfie because he (approximately) knows where his phone is if itâs in his hand, he cannot see the alignment grid.
He should ask someone to take it for him! I hear the audience say. Yes, that would be the sane and reasonable thing to do, but Dad was attempting to do taxes at his residence in Fort Collins, while his immediate family was respectively in Denver, Texas and Canada. He tried calling our neighbors, who turned out to be in Uganda.
He looked down at the dog, Arwen, and her little criminal paws that can open doorknobs, but not operate cell phones.
She looked back at him, and farted.
âWell, Iâll give it a try, but if it gives me too much trouble, Iâll call Larry, and Larry can call the IRS about it.â Dad told her.Â
She continued to watch him. Arwen is an Australian Kelpie (a type of cattle-herding dog), going on 14 years old, deaf as a post and suffering from canine dementia now, but she still retains her natural instinct to Micromanage. She was also trained as a therapy dog, and even if she canât hear my dad, still recognizes the body language of a man setting himself up for catastrophe.
So, squinting in the late afternoon light next to the back door, Dad attempted to line his face up with a grid he could only sort-of see, and took A Federal Selfie.
The System thought about it for a few moments.

â...Huh.â Dad frowned. âAlright.â
He moved to the middle of his office, away from the back door, lit only by the house lighting and indirect sunlight, and tried again.

âWhat?â Dad asked the universe in general.
âWhuff.â Arwen warned him against sunk costs.
Dad ignored her and went into the bathroom, the natural habitat of the selfie. Surely, only being lit by a light fixture that hadnât been changed since Dad was attempting to warn everyone about Regan would be suitably insufficient lighting for The System. It took some negotiating, because that bathroom is âStanding Room Onlyâ not âStanding And Holding Your Arms Out In Front Of You Roomâ. He ended up taking the selfie in the shower stall.
As The System mulled over the latest attempt, Arwen shuffled over and kicked open the door to watch.

âDo you mean Spiritually?â Dad demanded.
âWhuff.â Arwen cautioned him again.
Determined to succeed, or at least get a different error message that may give him more information, Dad entered The Downstairs Guest Room. It is the darkest room in the house, as it is in the basement, and only has one legally-mandated-fire-escape window, which has blinds. Dad drew those blinds, turned off the lights and tried AGAIN.

âDO YOU WANT ME TO PHOTOGRAPH MYSELF INSIDE OF A CAVE??â Dad howled.Â
âWHUFF!â Arwen reprimanded him from under the pull-out bed in the room. Itâs where she attempts to herd everyone when itâs thundering outside, so the space is called her âSafety Caveâ.
Dad frowned at the large blurry shape that was The Safety Cave.
âWhy not?â he asked, the prelude to many a Terrible Plan. With no small amount of spiteful and manic glee, Dad got down onto the floor, and army-crawled under the bed with Arwen to try One Last Time. Now in near-total darkness, he rolled on his side to be able to stretch his arms out, Arwen slobber-panting in his ear, and waited for the vague green blob of the Facial grid to appear.
This time, when he tapped the button, the flash cctivated.
âGOD DAMN IT!â Dad shouted, dropping the phone and rubbing his eyes and cursing to alleviate the pain of accidentally flash-banging himself. Arwen shuffled away from him under the bed, huffing sarcastically at him.

âMOTHERFU- hang on.â Dad squinted. The System sounded strange. Distant and slightly muffled.
Dad squinted really hard, and saw the movement of Arwen crawling out from under the bed along the phoneâs last known trajectory.
âARWEN!â Dad shouted, awkwardly reverse-army crawling out from under the bed, using it to get to his feet and searching for his glasses, which had fallen out of his pocket under the bed, so by the time he was sighted again, Arwen had had ample time to remove The Offending Device.
He found her out in the middle of the back yard, the satisfied look of a Job Well Done on her face. She did not have the phone.Â
âArwen.â Dad glared. Itâs a very good glare. Dad was a teacher for many years and used it to keep his class in order with sheer telepathically induced embarrassment, and his father once glared a peach tree into fecundity. Â
Arwen regarded him with the casual interest a hurricane might regard a sailboat tumbling out of its wake. She is a force of nature unto herself and not about to be intimidated by a half-blind house ape. She also has cataracts and might not be able to make out the glare.
âI GIVE UP!â Dad shouted, throwing his hands in the air and returning to the office to write to the IRS that their selfie software sucks ass. Pleased that she had gotten her desired result, Arwen followed him in.
To Dadâs immense surprise, the computer cheerfully informed him that his Federally Secure Selfie had been accepted, and that they had received and were now processing his return!
âWhat the FUCK?â Dad glared. âOh well. If Iâve screwed it up, Larry can call me.â

I bring this up because recently, Dad received an interesting piece of mail.
It was a letter from the IRS, addressed to him, a nerve-wracking thing to recessive at the best of times. Instead of a complaint about Dadâs Selfie Skills, it was a letter congratulating him on using the new ID.me System. It thanked him for his help and expressed hopes he would use it again next year, and included the selfie that The System had finally decided to accept.
âYou know, my dad used to complain about automation.â Dad sighed, staring at the image. âIncidentals my boy! My secretary saves the state of California millions of dollars a year catching small errors before they become massive ones! Heâd say. Fought the human resources board about her pay every year. I used to think he was overestimating how bad machines were and underestimating human error, but you know? He was right.â
He handed me the image.
My father was, technically, in the image. A significant amount of the bottom right corner is taken up by the top of his forehead and silver hair. Most of the image, the part with the facial-recognition markers on it, was composed of Arwenâs Alarmed and Disgusted Doggy face.
âOh no!â I cackled. âCrap, does this mean you have to call the IRS and tell them youâre not a dog?â
âProbably.â Dad sighed. âI know who I��m gonna bother first though.â he said, taking out his phone (Dad did find his phone a few hours after Arwen absconded with it when mom called and the early spinach started ringing).Â
âHey Larry!â Dad announced to the local federal agent. âYouâre never gonna believe this. My dog filed my taxes!â
Larry considered this for a moment. âIs this the dog that stole my sandwich? Out of my locked car?â he asked suspiciously.
âThe very same.â Dad grinned.
âHm. Clever Girl.â Federal Agent Larry sighed. âI figured it was only a matter of time before she got into tax fraud.â

Lina Khanâs future is the future of the Democratic Partyâââand America

On the one hand, the anti-monopoly movement has a future no matter who wins the 2024 election â that's true even if Kamala Harris wins but heeds the calls from billionaire donors to fire Lina Khan and her fellow trustbusters.
In part, that's because US antitrust laws have broad "private rights of action" that allow individuals and companies to sue one another for monopolistic conduct, even if top government officials are turning a blind eye. It's true that from the Reagan era to the Biden era, these private suits were few and far between, and the cases that were brought often died in a federal courtroom. But the past four years has seen a resurgence of antitrust rage that runs from left to right, and from individuals to the C-suites of big companies, driving a wave of private cases that are prevailing in the courts, upending the pro-monopoly precedents that billionaires procured by offering free "continuing education" antitrust training to 40% of the Federal judiciary:

It's amazing to see the DoJ racking up huge wins against Google's monopolistic conduct, sure, but first blood went to Epic, who won a historic victory over Google in federal court six months before the DoJ's win, which led to the court ordering Google to open up its app store:

Private antitrust cases have attracted some very surprising plaintiffs, like Michael Jordan, whose long policy of apoliticism crumbled once he bought a NASCAR team and lived through the monopoly abuses of sports leagues as an owner, not a player:

A much weirder and more unlikely antitrust plaintiff than Michael Jordan is Google, the perennial antitrust defendant. Google has brought a complaint against Microsoft in the EU, based on Microsoft's extremely ugly monopolistic cloud business:

Google's choice of venue here highlights another reason to think that the antitrust surge will continue irrespective of US politics: antitrust is global. Antitrust fervor has seized governments from the UK to the EU to South Korea to Japan. All of those countries have extremely similar antitrust laws, because they all had their statute books overhauled by US technocrats as part of the Marshall Plan, so they have the same statutory tools as the American trustbusters who dismantled Standard Oil and AT&T, and who are making ready to shatter Google into several competing businesses:

Antitrust fever has spread to Canada, Australia, and even China, where the Cyberspace Directive bans Chinese tech giants from breaking interoperability to freeze out Chinese startups. Anything that can't go on forever eventually stops, and the cost of 40 years of pro-monopoly can't be ignored. Monopolies make the whole world more brittle, even as the cost of that brittleness mounts. What's more, the conduct of global monopolists is the same in every country where they have taken hold, which means that trustbusters in the EU can use the UK Digital Markets Unit's report on the mobile app market as a roadmap for their enforcement actions against Apple:

So on the one hand, the trustbusting wave will continue erode the foundations of global monopolies, no matter what happens after this election. But on the other hand, if Harris wins and then fires Biden's top trustbusters to appease her billionaire donors, things are going to get ugly.

The article begins with a litany of tech billionaires who've gone an all-out, public assault on Khan's leadership â billionaires who stand to personally lose hundreds of millions of dollars from her agency's principled, vital antitrust work, but who cloak their objection to Khan in rhetoric about defending the American economy. In public, some of these billionaires are icily polite, but many of them degenerate into frothing, toddler-grade name-calling, like IAB's Barry Diller, who called her a "dope" and Musk lickspittle Jason Calacanis, who called her an all-caps COMMUNIST and a LUNATIC.
The overall vibe from these wreckers? "How dare the FTC do things?!"
And you know, they have a point. For decades, the FTC was â in the quoted words of Tim Wu â "a very hardworking agency that did nothing." This was the period when the FTC targeted low-level scammers while turning a blind eye to the monsters that were devouring the US economy. In part, that was because the FTC had been starved of budget, trapping them in a cycle of racking up easy, largely pointless "wins" against penny-ante grifters to justify their existence, but never to the extent that Congress would apportion them the funds to tackle the really serious cases (if this sounds familiar, it's also the what happened during the long period when the IRS chased middle class taxpayers over minor filing errors, while ignoring the billionaires and giant corporations that engaged in 7- and 8-figure tax scams).
But the FTC wasn't merely underfunded: it was timid. The FTC has extremely broad enforcement and rulemaking powers, which most sat dormant during the neoliberal era:

The Biden administration didn't merely increase the FTC's funding: in choosing Khan to helm the organization, they brought onboard a skilled technician, who was both well-versed in the extensive but unused powers of the agency and determined to use them:

But Khan's didn't just rely on technical chops and resources to begin the de-olicharchification of the US economy: she built a three-legged stool, whose third leg is narrative. Khan's signature is her in-person and remote "listening tours," where workers who've been harmed by corporate power get to tell their stories. Bloomberg recounts the story of Deborah Brantley, who was sexually harassed and threatened by her bosses at Kavasutra North Palm Beach. Brantley's bosses touched her inappropriately and "joked" about drugging her and raping her so she "wonât be such a bitch and then maybe people would like you more."
When Brantley finally quit and took a job bartending at a different business, Kavasutra sued her over her noncompete clause, alleging an "irreparable injury" sustained by having one of their former employees working at another business, seeking damages and fees.
The vast majority of the 30 million American workers who labor under noncompetes are like Brantley, low-waged service workers, especially at fast-food restaurants (so Wendy's franchisees can stop minimum wage cashiers from earning $0.25/hour more flipping burgers at a nearby McDonald's). The donor-class indenturers who defend noncompetes claim that noncompetes are necessary to protect "innovative" businesses from losing their "IP." But of course, the one state where no workers are subject to noncompetes is California, which bans them outright â the state that is also home to Silicon Valley, an IP-heave industry that the same billionaires laud for its innovations.

Only to have a federal judge in Texas throw out their ban, a move that will see $300b/year transfered from workers to shareholders, and block the formation of 8,500 new US businesses every year:

Notwithstanding court victories like Epic v Google and DoJ v Google, America's oligarchs have the courts on their side, thanks to decades of court-packing planned by the Federalist Society and executed by Senate Republicans and Reagan, Bush I, Bush II, and Trump. Khan understands this; she told Bloomberg that she's a "close student" of the tactics Reagan used to transform American society, admiring his effectiveness while hating his results. Like other transformative presidents, good and bad, Reagan had to fight the judiciary and entrenched institutions (as did FDR and Lincoln). Erasing Reagan's legacy is a long-term project, a battle of inches that will involve mustering broad political support for the cause of a freer, more equal America.
Neither Biden nor Khan are responsible for the groundswell of US â and global â movement to euthanize our rentier overlords. This is a moment whose time has come; a fact demonstrated by the tens of thousands of working Americans who filled the FTC's noncompete docket with outraged comments. People understand that corporate looters â not "the economy" or "the forces of history" â are the reason that the businesses where they worked and shopped were destroyed by private equity goons who amassed intergenerational, dynastic fortunes by strip-mining the real economy and leaving behind rubble.
Like the billionaires publicly demanding that Harris fire Khan, private equity bosses can't stop making tone-deaf, guillotine-conjuring pronouncements about their own virtue and the righteousness of their businesses. They don't just want to destroy the world - they want to be praised for it:/p>

Meanwhile, the "buy, strip and flip" model continues to chew its way through America. When PE buys up all the treatment centers for kids with behavioral problems, they hack away at staffing and oversight, turning them into nightmares where kids are routinely abused, raped and murdered:

When PE buys up nursing homes, the same thing happens, with elderly residents left to sit in their own excrement and then die:

Writing in The Guardian, Alex Blasdel lays out the case for private equity as a kind of virus that infects economies, parasitically draining them of not just the capacity to provide goods and services, but also of the ability to govern themselves, as politicians and regulators are captured by the unfathomable sums that PE flushes into the political process:

Now, the average worker who's just lost their job may not understand "divi recaps" or "2-and-20" or "carried interest tax loopholes," but they do understand that something is deeply rotten in the world today.
What happens to that understanding is a matter of politics. The Republicans â firmly affiliated with, and beloved of, the wreckers â have chosen an easy path to capitalizing on the rising rage. All they need to do is convince the public that the system is irredeemably corrupt and that the government can't possibly fix anything (hence Reagan's asinine "joke": "the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help'").
This is a very canny strategy. If you are the party of "governments are intrinsically corrupt and incompetent," then governing corruptly and incompetently proves your point. The GOP strategy is to create a nation of enraged nihilists who don't even imagine that the government could do something to hold their bosses to account â not for labor abuses, not for pollution, not for wage theft or bribery.
The fact that successive neoliberal governments â including Democratic administrations â acted time and again to bear out this hypothesis makes it easy for this kind of nihilism to take hold.
Far-right conspiracies about pharma bosses colluding with corrupt FDA officials to poison us with vaccines for profit owe their success to the lived experience of millions of Americans who lost loved ones to a conspiracy between pharma bosses and corrupt officials to poison us with opioids.

If Harris gives in to billionaire donors and fires Khan and her fellow trustbusters, paving the way for more looting and scamming, the result will be more nihilism, which is to say, more electoral victories for the GOP. The "government can't do anything" party already exists. There are no votes to be gained by billing yourself as the "we also think governments can't do anything" party.
In other words, a world where Khan doesn't run the FTC is a world where antitrust continues to gain ground, but without taking Democrats with it. It's a world where nihilism wins.

Things in Zackâs ADHD apartment that are necessary for him to function (as implemented by Angeal.)
His toothbrush lives on his nightstand. Not in the draw, not in a cabinet over the sink, not in a little pot on the sink. On. His. Nightstand. Because in Zackâs brain, if the first thing he seeâs in a morning is his toothbrush he thinks âI need to remember to do that, Iâll do it nowâ and then gets to the bathroom and thinks âI might as well shower and do my hair tooâŚ. Hey I need to pee!â
Everything he needs for meal prep goes in a little container in the fridge and is labeled with the days they are to be consumed by. Even the stuff that doesnât classically live in the fridge go in to these cubbies. Angeal checks them every week and if there is left over stuff he takes it away, makes small lunch portions, freezes them and leaves a note on Zackâs fridge that says lunches are already there for him.
Speaking of, there is a dry erase whiteboard on Zackâs fridge door. It has a grocery list side and a calendar on it. Cloud tends to be the one who updates it when Zack forgets (which is a lot).
Zackâs game consoles are in a cupboard with his games to stop himself getting distracted while he typed up his reports. This was Zackâs own solution and it works semi well.
His sword hangs on a peg on the back of the door now.
Shoe rack. Itâs messy but he can see all of his shoe options.
Files on his shelf that are clearly labeled: âpay checks, bills and taxesâ, âletters from homeâ, âbills part 2â, âcommission certificate and graduation paperworkâ, âlegal thingiesâ, âpassport, birth certificates, and other Identification stuffâ. The files were Genesisâ idea. They are written in fun fonts and in colourful felt tips, so he knows where they go.
If he forgets to put things in files they are usually on the coffee table and Sephiroth (the filing fiend) usually does a weekly sweep and sort of his documents.
Laundry basket hoop. Doesnât always work but sometimes it gives him the dopamine.
A physical letter box on the wall by his front door. He gets a dopamine hit from using a key to check his mailâŚ. Nobodies willing to question it.
The worlds most irritating alarm clock.
Cloud. Just Cloud.
Bottles and kitchen tools all hung at eye level.
Spiny spice rack. He could have had a shelf but the spiny one entertains him.
The smart watch Lazard had Reeve make him. It reminds him of basically everything.
Stamp the dog hydration app that makes sad puppy noises when he needs to drink water (he was irritated about it but he doesnât actually like upsetting the dog.)
A roomba with googly eyes on it called George. George is on a timer.
Electric air freshener and automatic air filtration.

You probably get this all the time, and I don't know why I only thought about this now, but I'm suddenly fascinated by the idea of a government employee who knows about the Upside Down that has been tasked with keeping an eye on Eddie's TikTok page and just constantly being so frustrated
I never get this but I have thought about it at length!!! Lol.
I just picture one overworked and underpaid agent being tasked with the whole *hand waving* Hawkins Situation.
There used to a time when the Hawkins Project was a coveted position given to the best agents with the highest clearance, but now⌠Now all the gates to the other world have been closed. Thereâs been no activity in three decades. Brennerâs dead. The Russians defuncted their projects. The girl â Eleven or Jane, or whatever â hasnât blown anything up since the nineties.
The Hawkins job is a babysitting job with CIA-level clearance, and itâs just⌠it was supposed to be a cakewalk but. Thereâs just⌠there are so many of them.
And for a while, they were spread all over the country.
One of them is a US Senator now and she called the head of the FBI âa bitchâ and âa cowardâ on a hot mic last week, and maybe.
Maybe for the sake of national security and their own sanity, maybe this agent pulled a few strings and dotted a few more Iâs than theyâre authorized to just to get Lucas Sinclair, Maxine Mayfield-Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, Nancy Wheeler, and Robin Buckley back in Chicago.
Maybe they did that. Thereâs no paper trail, but maybe they did.
Itâs easier to keep track of a âpartyâ of people if most of them are in the same state.
This Party â as they fondly call themselves â barely qualified as a threat anymore. They are barely a concern at this point. Only a few of them are considered dangerous enough to require anything more than the occasional check-in. Those people being Jane Hopper, James âJimâ Hopper, Nancy Wheeler, Murray Bauman, and â much to this agentâs annoyance â Edward Munson.
Eddie wouldnât be a cause for concern if he wasnât so goddamn loud. He is in no way a threat to national security but the CIA doesnât love when people allude to a defuncted Cold War project that resulted in an inter-dimensional serial killer murdering a bunch of small town high school students.
This agent does not believe that Eddie Munson knows what an NDA is or that he signed one.
It is one thing to write songs about demon bats and hell spilling into small town Americana or to make your album cover resemble the charred remains of Henry Creelâs disfigured body (âyeahâ the agent thinks, âyouâre not that slick, Munsonâ) but it is something else to announce to your millions of TikTok followers that you got rabies in a hell dimension.
This agent does not have enough pull to persuade Congress to outright ban TikTok and actually thinks that a TikTok ban would be an overreach of government control, but damn if it would not have made their life easier. Though they fear that Munson would just go to YouTube and the idea of longer content makes them shiver.
And by the way, this agent expected better from Steven Harrington!
This agent liked Steve! He was one of their favorites!!
Steve didnât make waves. He lived a quiet life, paid his taxes, and barely had a social media presence. He was an absolute dream to be monitoring until Eddie downloaded that cursed clock app.
Steve was never viewed on the same threat level as Jane Hopper or Murray Bauman, but he was a closely monitored subject due to his long-term injuries and his time spent in the alternate dimension and the Russian bunker under Starcourt Mall. Despite close monitoring, there is no note in his file of any digression until Eddie started shoving Tiktok in his face.
This agent sits in their office at the CIAâs Chicago location.
In the basement, at the end of a long dusty corridor, beneath a buzzing fluorescent light, they get a notification on their computer. Itâs from Tiktok, and this agent breathes in slowly. They rub at the forming headache between their brows and names it Eddie Munson.
They click the notification, waits a second for the shitty wifi to bring them to the app, and watches as Steve Harrington says, âTechnically weâre time travelers.â
And they sigh.

Murf's Top 50 Mods - Part 3 (2020 - 2023 Edition)
I made a Top 50 list (Pt 1 and Pt2) back in 2016, talking about mods that I've used & love. But with all the goated content that the amazing TS3 community continues to churn out, I NEEDED to update my list! This one in no way diminishes or negates the other mods I've already listed--like, I shouldn't have to sit here and explain how NRAAS continues to carry TS3 on its freaking shoulders, ok. This is just MORE mods, the Top 50 most RECENT ones I've tried out since, like, quarantine.
I am a VERY niche simmer--I love fantasy gameplay, so my fave mods are the ones that not only offer general quality of life improvements, but also add new abilities and interactive objects inspired by different cultures, time periods, or genres. So y'all already KNOW which ones have earned my top spots. They're not based on which mods are "better," just which ones I personally have been using the most.
1: Smooth Patch, LazyDuchess
I've already gushed about this mod, but oh well. Like--I use an EFFTON of CC. My Live Mode gameplay itself doesn't tend to lag so much as my game's slow to LOAD, slow to save, CAS is a nightmare, I can do my taxes waiting for the Misc Decor section to open, etc etc. But the Smooth Patch loads everything so much quicker for me! đ
One thing is that on the EA App version (curse you, EA) the Master Controller package didn't work on my end, so I took it out, but everything else has been great!
2: Search Mod, LazyDuchess
Speaking of the Misc Decor section -- HOW LONG did we ask EA for a Search function y'all? Only to be ignored. Then the second TS4 is released, it ain't got a effing thing in it, but it's got a Search function??? đ¤ ISTG it's like the simgurus were told to take all of the TS3 community's best suggestions, and poach them for TS4 (like vampire coffins--NO I'm not over it!). WHY do modders have to do your frikkin job for you, EA?! I call EA lazy all the time cuz EA you suck, so it's the most ironic thing ever that LazyDuchess is out here KILLING IT.
My ONLY "complaint" about the Search mod is the position of the icon. I use A LOT of Collection Files, and I noticed that the Search icon actually covers the Delete button when in the Collection viewer. So I can't delete items in collections with the Search icon in the way.
But this is a MINOR nitpick--I almost never delete items, it's just something I noticed is all.
3 - 8: OCCULT MODS: EVERYTHING by @puddingface1902
Y'all already know the Enhanced Witches mod is my favorite mod ever made. But PF1902 also made cool enhancements to the Fairies, Genies, Vampires, Werewolves, and Mermaids too! My sims are usually Nraas hybrids (e.g.: Sakura is a faery, witch & plantsim; Magnus Bane is a witch & genie; etc.), so it's FANTASTIC having so many new abilities for my magical occults. đ
9 - 11: OCCULT MODS by xantak22
Even more occult mods at MTS are for enhanced Plantsims, Ghosts, and Mummies! I was dying for more Plantsim abilities, omg, they're my 3rd fave occult after Witches & Fae.
12: Sim Control Tools by Knight
Sooooo many quality of life mods have come out! ^0^
I've been ABUSING the Teleport To Me function, to quickly get sims off of lots & where I need them to be. It also lets sims unlock more Social/Romantic interactions. (Now all we need is a way to interact with sims from EA's useless thumbnails.)
13 - 18: @anitmb's mods
There are SOOOO many--most I've yet to even try. But so far newer ones I've been using are the Deck of Cards (FINALLY something other than EA's bulky AF poker table!), Farm Mod (look at all these CHICKENS!), and Hunting mod so my 8000 archer sims can actually hunt! (Ofc I've also used the Woodcutter and Anvil mods in my older gameplay posts, too.) And @mspoodle1's edit of the Cup of Tea mod is so pretty.
19: @mspoodle1's Poker table
Another excellent cards mod is this medieval style poker table I use a lot now, too.
20: @omedapixel's Wildflowers DR
I like EA's default wildflowers from SSNS, but Omeda's are just sooooo much nicer. (I haven't gotten around to trying out their Harvestable Plant DR yet.)
21: Swordfighting mod by CyrusBanefort
En garde! This mod is so freaking epic!
One thing I've noticed is that the game lags while it waits for the mod to boot up (a message has to first pop up saying it's running when you first launch your saves). But other than that this mod is excellent.
22 - 24: Yoga rugs
I've long been using the yoga rugs by Kitabalibar and the edited one from @mspoodle1. But now there's the newest one by @twinsimming, with brand new animations & features. The more the merrier I say, LOL. What's especially neat is the kids wobbling around as they try to do yoga! :3
25 - 30: TheSweetSimmer's mods--so cute! :3
Omg so frikkin many, I can't even catch up! The interactions are so freaking precious, like from the More Toddler Interactions (cuddle, look at, etc) & Biggest Little Mod (hug legs), I've never had so much fun playing with kids! <3 And I LOVE that they can Catch Butterflies and Pick Flowers--you'd think plantsim children would be able to do this by default, EA! Honestly, just grab everything by TSS, your kid sims will thank you!
31 - 33: @spheresims Medieval/Nature/Tribal mods
Y'all know I'm crazy about the Functional Fireplaces mod (the cauldrons, baby! đ), but the One with Nature and Wildlife Hunting mods are great too, perfectly complimenting the off-the-grid realness.
34: @olomayasims/Cmomoney Smoking Mod Overhaul
The original smoking mod was on my first Top 50 list, so it's awesome seeing it get new upgrades, interactions & animations.
I've never smoked IRL, but sooooo many of my sims just puff-puff away; I'm such an enabler. U_U Now all we need is cigars and pipes!
35 - 38: Callia-Evergreen/Camkitty's CAS CC for animal hybrids at MTS
Not a "mod" per se, but whatever--my list my rules! I love ALL of their CC, but I get SO MUCH use out of animal-themed CC like the digitigrade sliders, wolf feet, lizard tails, and fae wings. Do check them out if you like to play with horror and monster-sims!
39: @greenplumbboblover's Sheep
EASILY one of the most incredible mods I've ever seen. Like....HOW? (Once @omedapixel's Goats are done I'm gonna start screaming someone do llamas pleeeeeaaaaase!!!)
40: Arsil's musical instruments mod
I used the sax most recently in my IWTV gameplay, and it was excellent, perfect for the NOLA vibes! However, although I use the flute A LOT more (for my Untamed gameplay--it's been such a GODSEND!), I really wish the hands were positioned better, preferably using the poses from Chisims' flute poseset. (But I don't eff with poses/animations, otherwise I'd do it myself. U_U) Ah well, it's still one of my fave mods though.
41 - 42: Flower Arranging mod by zoe22 + @mspoodle1's Florist Collection
Guys, I've been wanting this mod since FOREVER! ^0^ (I swear, the best thing about TS4 is all the 4t3 conversions, LMAO!) I just wish Teens could Dabble and use it, too--all they can do is stock the table.
43: Just Sit/Nap Anywhere by FloTheory
Sometimes you just want sims to fall asleep anywhere, DANG, EA!
44: @sweetdevil-sims' Toddler Food DR
Cuz EA's food is UUUUUUUUGLY~! I kept forgetting to install it, only to be rudely reminded every time I had to look at my toddler sims eating MUD.
45 - 46: @mspoodle1's mail pen quill DR and @omedapixel's pencil quill DR
I looooove quill pens IRL (ballpoint pens, not the fountain pens--I'm way too messy), so having mods that let my sims use them too is đ
47: Fireflies Enhanced! by Canibal_MLO
I love anything that enhances the wildlife and collectibles/harvestables to be more dynamic and interactive. And I was JUST about to do a firefly catching scene for my IWTV insp. gameplay, so this came right on time! The falling leaves effect is delightful, but I kinda wish it was falling flower petals instead, cuz ofc I do. đ¸
48: Unicorn Aurora DR by Canibal_MLO
GORGEOUS. This mod replaces the unicorn mist with northern lights, like.... I love the genius ideas simmers have.
49: Custom Plumbbob Color tool by CrossTheMersey
What a neat idea! Although the default Maxis colors are ingrained in my psyche, with the iconic green plumbbob, as soon as I saw this mod I knew I wanted to at least try something different and play around with it.
50: @aa6x7's Teru Teru Bozu + other edits [Honorable Mention]
I rave about Cmomoney's Time/Weather Mod all the time, I use it constantly. AA6x7's Teru Teru Bozu (Japanese "Sunshine Monk" charms) is kinda like a simpler version of it, as it just resets bad weather back to Sunny. But it's such a cute idea and perfect for my gameplay. Plus, AA6x7 makes all kinds of neat edits/mods to EA's bulky AF meshes, so if you haven't checked them out already, DO!
And that's all the mods I've managed to try out recently!
I don't have anywhere near the kind of free time that I used to, so my simming has been put on the backburner and I've missed all kinds of cool and exciting releases. But trust: I am taking note, so that I know what to try once I have time.

I've used Credit Karma's tax filing feature for the past few years with great success but I just went to their site and it looks like they're partnering with Intuit (the owners of TurboTax) now, which I have no idea about the goodness of.
Cash App has been advertising its free tax services as well recently but I haven't tried those out and would love to hear from anyone who has
Do you have any good recommendations for cheap/free tax software?
So, I've seen posts going around about inexpensive tax software via the IRS, although last time I tried that (years and years ago) it just sent me to the "free" turbotax site, which was only free if you didn't need any special forms and now may not be free at all, I'm told a lot of people get charged hundreds by turbotax.
Most "free" sites are also only free if you earn less than a specific threshold, usually around $70K. The IRS has a list of options here, but I'm afraid I know nothing about any of them (readership, feel free to chime in by comment or reblog). IRS Free File is probably a good bet but I have no idea what their site is actually like, so I don't know if it's at all user friendly, and the one time I filed directly through the IRS I immediately fucked it up and owed them an extra $50 which they came after me for, so, you know. You get what you pay for.
After that first disastrous year, I just went to H&R Block and I've been filing there my entire adult life. They're very intuitive; they just ask you questions and you answer them, and they tell you how much you owe. I'm a homeowner and technically I own a small business, so I have to file extra weird forms, and I earn above threshold now anyway, so I just pay the $50 or whatever it is (the federal and state forms both cost a certain amount but they just take it out of my refund). That also means they store my previous year's return, so that I don't have to go digging for it to add its info into the next year.
I think this is super important: whatever you use, if at any point they show you a PDF of a completed tax filing form, SAVE IT. It is probably the only time you will see it and often if you want it later they'll charge you for it. SAVE THE COMPLETED FORM WHEN YOU SEE IT. Even if it's not an official document it has information you will need next year.
But yeah, I've filed with H&R Block for I think about 15 years now, first as a free user and now as a paid user, and I have no complaints. Otherwise I'm afraid I'm not much help, but hopefully the readership can offer resources!

Deep dive to Spam bots on Tumblr (Spoiler: FSB mentioned)
(TL;DR: Russian business man is heavily investing into companies behind the bots, mentions of FSB, Shell companies in tax-evasion and weak business law countries, Huge industry and money laundering)Â
I got annoyed about the bots on tumblr, so I decided to do some investigation into who is behind them and funding the operation, here is my findings:
The graph shows how a network of âaffiliate marketingâ companies for âdatingâ services is connected and some of the key players behind said companies
The first âcompanyâ I ran into is called âDigital international Incâ and it is shown as the âlegal entityâ behind of many of the websites the bots tend to link to, it also has its address listed in the Marshall Islands.
By looking at trademarks owned/filed by that company, we find 2 more companies/trademarks that are/were owned by the same legal entity.
First of these is called âMirelia Services Co.â, currently known as âMirelia Networksâ, which lists its main business as âadvertising and marketingâ and is registered at the same address as âDigital Internationalâ.
Where things get interesting is when we look at one of the trademarks that was passed between âMireliaâ and âDigital internationalâ, a trademark for an LGBTQ+ dating app called âHitweâ,
The trademark application for âHitweâ is listed as âRescinded/canceledâ but from the original registration documents and later ownership transfer filings, we come across an interesting company
âMatar Trade & Invest Ltd.â This company has other similar âdatingâ and âmarketingâ companies linked to it, and is owned by âVladimir Mnogoletniyâ, a Citizen of Russia, who has lived in Ukraine for over 10 years and his runs his businesses there, but interestingly does not seem to have officially moved there, and maintains his Russian Citizenship as his only one.
He is also the CEO or a major of many other companies, the main one being âGenesisâ, the company behind a controversial fitness app âBetterMeâ, which has been shown to aggressively sell user data to less-than-reputable ad companies and affiliates, as well as being used to redirect money from scam dating sites and lessen the impact of credit card chargebacks from those sites [See footnote 1]
What makes him a particularly interesting individual is that his father, who is a Captain of the Second Rank in the Russian Navy, is doing security work for âSevmashâ - A Russian shipbuilding company, the only one that is making nuclear submarines in Russia. He also co-authored a research paper that talks about âMilitary Counterintelligence activitiesâ, The other author of said paper is an FSB officer.[See footnote 2]

Most of these seem to have been rejected because the address he listed in the applications does not exist

Cash app offers free tax filing for both federal and state (if you only have 1 state to file). It doesn't have any income maximum or minimum that I'm aware of. I had a good experience using them this year and last year!
Oh my god if you are in the USA and filing your taxes yourself this year, please use the irs free file tool to find guided tax software. You can calculate your agi (adjusted gross income, basically the first thing on your W-2) quite easily and if it is under $79k USD, the irs will direct you to free tax software so you can file both federal and state at the same time. I ended up using 1040.com for my slightly-complex return and it took me 2 measly hours. Be not afraid! Go forth and file!

he has to take mandarin classes and fall back on translating apps. people point out how funny that is, but frank doesn't really think so.

someone holds up a banana to his arm and says they're the same colour
they've urged other students to complain that he smells like rice and ask to change seats.
his teacher tells him to speak up when he talks, because he's in canada now, not china.
she asks if his parents bound his sister's feet, and seems disappointed when frank says he doesn't have a sister. then she talks about china's one-child policy and it feels like it's frank's fault.

their houses are filled with repurposed plastic jars that hold homemade pickled goods and pastes and sauces, three rice cookers (only two work), an airfryer that's stained and blackened, and they put lids on half-full pans and pots and keep them in the oven for later. their dining tables are piled with clutter from their mothers hoarding and reusing; and it's all so starkly different to his own that he feels like he's intruding.
someone asks if he can speak any mandarin, and he smiles, and shrugs, and says he's basically white, sorry. though he doesn't know what he's apologising for.

3 Tips for Fanfic / AO3 Readers!
I love, love, love reading fanfic (McLennon, helllooooo).
Here are 3 ways to make your fanfic reading easier / more enjoyable since it's off the traditional publishing path:
If you love listening to Audiobooks, download NaturalReaders, upload a PDF of a fic & listen like it's on Audible. If you think you'll listen a lot, I highly recommend getting the Plus Subscription ($19/month). This is not an ad, btw, I don't get a kickback for this. But the Plus Subscription AI voices are so insanely realistic & expressive that you'll feel like you're listening to a human narrator. My personal favorite is Andrew (U.S.). If you don't want to pay, their free voices are fine - it just doesn't pass for human. (Bonus: I use this subscription for work & write it off on my taxes. Then I use it to read long/boring work docs. But duh, fanfic is the real reason I pay for it!) NaturalReaders is my favorite way to consume long fics while I'm cleaning/cooking/driving, including and especially my current fav, On Our Way Back Home. One tip, though: If you wanna listen to a particularly long fic, like hundreds of pages long, it's easier if you split it up into a couple of files before you upload it. It will load much faster and it's easier to manage since it won't have chapter markings like on Audible.
Download AO3 files on Kindle. You probably already know this - but I didn't realize, until recently, how incredibly easy this is!! Here's how: - Download the Kindle App on your phone / iPad. - Open AO3 and download any fics to read as an EPUB file. - If you've downloaded these files on your computer, airdrop to your iPhone or iPad. If you've downloaded on your phone you won't have to do this step. - Go to your downloads or whatever folder itâs saved to. - Click the file with a long hold then select to "Share to Kindle." - Make any changes you want to the title / author's name and then click upload! It'll be available on your phone/ipad in a few minutes. Just like a regular Kindle book you can highlight, annotate, change font size / color, etc. 3. Keep your fics organized on Kindle with "Collections." "Collections" are essentially themed folders on your Kindle. I use them to sort fics into categories: unread, currently reading, and favorite fics that I'm excited to re-read! I also sort based on fandom / length. So "Short McLennon Unread" or "Favorite McLennon to Reread." You could use the folders however you want, of course. One advantage of this is that you can batch upload dozens or hundreds of fics on your phone / iPad and then find which one you want more easily. I love, love, love doing this before an international trip so my Kindle is always fully loaded with hours of McLennon entertainment. Sorry, not sorry to anyone reading over my shoulder on a flight. Hey guys, I know its been like 2 and half weeks since I've been active on here and sorey about that. I'll explain everything later but, I felt like this is too important not to share.
Did you guys know the IRS has a site for students with learning modules and assessments design to teach you the basics of understanding/filing taxes?
I don't know how good it is but I plan on going through EVERYTHING today so I'll let you know. As someone without really a foundational understanding of how taxes work, this feels like a good resource to share.
Designed for students but it doesn't seem like there's anything stopping ANYONE from just going on here and learning. It look approachable and easy to understand, with links to explain tax jargon and 14 learning modules.
Is it weird to be excited about this? I am genuinely happy to have found this tbh- here I was prepared for a day of slogging through different websites explaining complicated financial terms and this is just here.
I really hope you guys take a look, because I am kind of amazed this just exists in the world and I- at 24 have never come across it or heard any of those dumb financial gurus talk about this.
