White supremacists, Incels, White nationalists, National Socialists, Proud Boys, Christian extremists… In order to showcase their behaviour in their natural habitat, Talia Lavin goes undercover online as a blonde Nazi babe, a forlorn incel and a violent Aryan femme fatale.
Lavin is every fascist's worst nightmare. She is loud, Jewish and unapologetically anti-racist, with the investigative skills to expose online hatemongers. While searching the dark web, she discovers a whites-only dating site, a popular extremist YouTube channel run by a teenager, the everyday heroes of the anti-fascist movement and much more. Lavin then turns the lens of anti-Semitism, racism, and white supremacy back on itself in an attempt to dismantle the online hate movement from the inside.
Shocking, humorous, and merciless in equal measure, Culture Warlords explores some of the vilest subcultures on the Web - and shows us how we can fight back.
Perfect for fans of Louis Theroux, Jon Ronson and Michael Moore, Lavin's debut book is a seamless balance of hard-hitting research, humour and shocking stories. It is a fascinating expose of the dark web and how it harbours the rage and views of far-right extremists today.

No one ever said hope was easy: it’s hauling four gallons of water up and down a flight of stairs day after day, making yourself continually face sluicing waves of terror, confiding a problem before it can fester too long in the dark, loving someone so much they could crush you. It’s trusting in you, reader, hoping you’ll get to the end of this column.
It’s spring; it’s perching yourself at the perfect cusp between day and night, and turning your face to the light, knowing its new abundance is going to spill into your life, into your cupped hands.

To create a blood libel is to invite violence. There is no other consequence. To wield this sort of calumny is to ready the ground for the destruction of innocents, and there is no escaping the moral stain of its promulgation. A third term for this evil is “pogrom”, which itself comes from the Russian verb pogromit—to destroy through violence—and its root, grom, is “thunder.” The terrifying crack precedes the catastrophe. The lie booms before the strike. ... Later that year, the Yiddish Forverts, in New York, called Kishinev and St. Louis “twin sisters.” United by pogrom, and its consistent anatomy: the drumroll of the lie, the buildup of pressure, the storm. It is happening now, that terrible static electricity, the boots on the march like a hard rain. Only through a relentless solidarity—as strong as a wind to sweep thunderheads away—can we keep this well-known and relentless beat at bay, avoid being sisters of the storm, and instead earth and disperse its cruel lightning.
Miguel’s company is regulated by the SEC, and has to take a nonpartisan approach on political issues, he said, and that extends to employees. Staying neutral about political issues may be a common rule for many American workers, but it’s more complicated when an issue is a part of your core identity, Miguel said. “I think that’s been a huge conflicting area in my professional journey,” he said. “It’s the separation and compartmentalization that I have to do to separate my identity — given that it is a very politicized experience — with my actual career and company affiliation.”

Sometimes you have to say what you mean, and I mean this: kids should have rights. Should not be raped by their pastors or parents or uncles and have no recourse at all. Should have support external to the family; and privacy, even. Are not property. Should not be nameless, or stateless, or forced into marriage, or shot in homeroom, or denied vaccination against measles and rubella. Children should have rights, even when—especially when—their best interests supersede the desires of their parents. I do believe we have a collective responsibility to ensure that, though we may be the only country in the world that disagrees
Talia Lavin at The Sword and the Sandwich. On the Rights of the Child, Part I
As of this writing, every U.N. member state has ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child but one: the United States.

From Kelly Hayes' latest newsletter, "Must-Reads and Some Thoughts On Navigating Anxiety"
Remember to Breathe Next week is going to be messy, and this weekend won’t be much better. Tensions and anxiety levels are high. Many of us wish we could fast forward through this homestretch of uncertainty, which could sprawl well beyond Election Day. There’s not much I can say that will ease your minds right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen next week, and I don’t trust anyone who claims to know. We all have hopes and worries about what’s ahead, and we all have work to do. My advice is to stay constructive and be as kind to yourself and others as possible. Impassioned people are not going to change their minds about anything at this stage. There is no point in arguing. If you want people to vote, there are GOTV efforts to engage with. If you want people to engage in mutual aid, protest, or community defense, invite people to join you in that work. I find doomscrolling profoundly unhelpful right now. If you want to educate yourself about what we’re up against, I recommend spending time with a good book on the subject, like Talia Lavin’s Wild Faith: How the Christian Right Is Taking Over America or Silky Shah’s Unbuild Walls: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition. This is also an excellent time to revisit Dean Spade’s Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next). If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember to breathe. ... For now, try to be gentle with yourselves and with others. Remember that some of the folks who are pissing you off right now are people you’ll need to build with later. I know what it’s like to burn bridges during tense moments, like this one, and to regret it, shortly thereafter, when the work of collective survival is at hand. Most of the conflicts unfolding around you right now are not worth engaging with; they are the product of fear, frustration, feelings of powerlessness, and fundamental disagreements that will not be resolved this week. Do what you can, where you can, and spend your time meaningfully. Move with love and purpose. Cherish what you know is worth fighting for. If you believe someone’s work is important, now is a good time to tell them so and to thank them for what they are doing. Amid so much stress, conflict, and acrimony, gratitude and expressions of solidarity can mean a great deal. Take care of yourself and your community. Whatever comes next, we won't face it alone.

"Evangelical 'love' of Israel is the love of the consumer towards the consumed, a hungry man for bread. Their fantasy is ultimately one of destruction: the annihilation of the Jewish faith through death, save an elect of 144,000 who convert to Christianity — a number derived from the Book of Revelations…The conversion and annihilation of the Jews must be preceded by their return to and absolute control of Israel; therefore the lives of Palestinians are worthless and forfeit from the start, a road-bump in this violent fantasy that was never accounted for in the Revelations map. They are an inconvenience to be disposed of, pawns to be knocked off the board so other pawns can be positioned to set up the moment of Christ's return, the end of history in blood."

Evangelical “love” of Israel is the love of the consumer towards the consumed, a hungry man for bread. Their fantasy is ultimately one of destruction: the annihilation of the Jewish faith through death, save an elect of 144,000 who convert to Christianity — a number derived from the Book of Revelations. It is a necropolitical fantasy, one that views the tribulation with, as a post from Calvary Chapel—the church to whom Rep. Brian Mast, who has appeared in Congress this week in an IDF uniform, belongs, put it—“excitement, anticipation, and glee”; the end of the world is “the highly anticipated kingdom.” The apocalypse demands the agony of all but the elect; to the elect it is ecstasy. It is rapture.
The conversion and annihilation of the Jews must be preceded by their return to and absolute control of Israel; therefore the lives of Palestinians are worthless and forfeit from the start, a road-bump in this violent fantasy that was never accounted for in the Revelations map. They are an inconvenience to be disposed of, pawns to be knocked off the board so other pawns can be positioned to set up the moment of Christ's return, the end of history in blood. Palestinians are less than human in this vision; inconveniences at best, instruments of the Antichrist at worst. Either way, their annihilation is necessary. There have been many predictions of the apocalypse and many preludes. In this moment of death and displacement, there is joy for Christian observers from afar, the ecstatic terror of deliverance.
What it amounts to is cheering on Armageddon from the cheap seats—and directing funds to ensure it occurs. It's a grotesquerie of geopolitics and religion, and it carries undue weight in American foreign policy, thanks to the merger of the Christian Right and the Republican Party. A game of chess with eternity at stake.
