What I connect with…

The work is total spectacle. Working in expanded painting, these works question the painting genre with its use of unconventional materials. For me the fluid resin works incorporate this element of chance that feels akin to the ceramic firing process, allowing the medium to do what it does by mixing and warping producing unexpected and exciting results. I’ve know for a while now I need to investigate epoxy resin in my own work, but have been put off by knowing I would essentially be bringing more plastic into the world, and as a maker I would struggle with that, but maybe this is the springboard I need to start thinking about it.

The artist talk showcased Frank’s unusual perspective and dislike for talking about his own work, and was filled with hidden gems about his experience making art for the past six decades. Makes me remember there is no right or wrong way to be an artist in the world.

1. Translocation of 2,000 rhinos in Africa gets underway in “one of the most audacious conservation efforts of modern times”

“The 2,000 rhinos - more than are currently found in any single wild location in Africa - represent around 12-15% of the continent’s remaining white rhino population. [��] “Rhinos perform an important ecological function in the environment as a large grazing herbivore,” says Dale Wepener[….] “The protection of rhino is far more than just looking after rhino; other species that occur in the protected areas will benefit from the protection,” explains Jooste. “This will lead to an increase in diversity and result in much healthier ecosystems.”

2. Florida Corridor Buffers Effects of Climate Change on Wildlife — And People

“A massive multi-partner effort that has conserved 10 million acres for wildlife in Florida over past decades will help buffer wildlife—and people—from the effects of climate change, a new report says. […] Protecting these corridors is important for wildlife genetics, demography and connectivity […], conducting prescribed fires in the corridor can reduce the risk of more intense wildfires [… and] they can provide buffers against hurricanes and seasonal thunderstorms.”

3. Global life expectancy to increase by nearly 5 years by 2050 despite geopolitical, metabolic, and environmental threats

“Increases are expected to be largest in countries where life expectancy is lower, contributing to a convergence of increased life expectancy across geographies. “Jardin del Turia (Turia Garden) is the green spine of the City of Valencia and Spain’s (and possibly Europe’s) longest urban park stretching for a length of 8.5 kilometres [… and] the current administration plans to make Jardin del Turia Europe’s largest city green space by extending it to the sea[….] Almost all Valencia residents (97 per cent) live within 300 metres of an urban green space. 5. This Paint Could Clean Both Itself and the Air

“When an artificial ultraviolet light source shines on [photocatalytic] paint, the nanoparticles react with pollutants to make them break down—theoretically removing them from the nearby air and preventing a discoloring buildup. [… R]esearchers developed a new photocatalytic paint that they claim works using UV rays from ordinary sunlight, making its self-cleaning properties easier to activate. They’ve also shown that they can effectively produce this paint from recycled materials [including fallen leaves].”

8. Rewilding: How a herd of bison reintroduced to Romania is helping ‘supercharge’ carbon removal

“170 European Bison reintroduced to Romania’s Țarcu mountains could help capture and store the carbon released by up to 84,000 average US petrol cars each year. […] By grazing a 48 square kilometre area of grassland in a wider landscape of 300 kilometres squared, they helped to capture an additional 54,000 tonnes of carbon each year. That is around 10 times the amount that would be captured by the ecosystem without the bison.”

9. World’s biggest grids could be powered by renewables, with little or no storage

“[…] 100% renewable supply can then match the load by putting surplus electricity into two kinds of distributed storage worth that [an energy expert] says are worth buying anyway – ice-storage air-conditioning and smart bidirectional charging of electric cars, and recover that energy when needed, filling the last gaps with unobtrusively flexible demand.”

10. Supporting the Long-Term Survival of Copper River Salmon and Alaska Native Traditions

“With $4.3 million in NOAA funds, the Copper River Watershed Project and The Eyak Corporation will remove fish passage barriers, opening more streams for salmon spawning and subsistence fishing. [… As part of this effort, o]ld narrow culverts that constrict water flow will be replaced with “stream simulation” culverts wide enough to fit the full stream, including its banks. They are also deep to allow contractors to place stones and other material inside to mimic a natural stream bottom.”

The recreation of the Russell Street Bombing in A Step Closer To The Madness still remains the most impressive feat that The Newsreader has pulled off, in my eyes. The amount of effort and dedication that went into making the explosion and the scene look as accurate as possible is so evident to viewers, especially when you compare it to the real footage from the day. Truthfully, sometimes I cannot tell the images of the recreation to the real event apart.

Michael Lucas shared to the Sydney Morning Herald that “there’s a real obligation to do it justice.” Filmed on the 3rd February 2021, both Russell Street and MacKenzie Street in Melbourne’s CBD were filled with vintage cars, period accurate ambulances, fire engines and police cars, and a whole heap of extras dressed appropriately in 1980s gear. One of the firefighters in the scenes; Graham Duncan, had even been on the scene of real bombing back in 1986, and he rated the recreation pretty spot on, and also spoke about how the episode would help bring the story to younger generations so that they can learn about it.

The recreation and the turning of these two busy Melbourne streets into a film set was so notable that it ended up making the real news. The Sydney Morning Herald, Seven News and Nine News all covered the filming, providing lots of behind the scenes footage and images. The streets were closed to the general public, and Victoria Police issued out warnings to the public about closures in the Russell Street vicinity, as well as out in Carlton for the pub scenes.

The filming was also the cause of real legality concern, and there was thoughts that the ABC might have faced an injunction from two of the Russell Street perpetrators in relation to their upcoming trial for an unrelated cause, which could have postponed the airing of the episode. This didn’t eventuate, as the ABC reassured their legal teams that their names and the criminal trial to follow the bombing wouldn’t be included in our show. Thank goodness for that.

Benj is my number one favorite guy, drama kid is best and just imagining him doing backstage shenanies is absolutely wonderful. So I’ve been thinking. I have a few monologues memorized, and just randomly pulling them out and reciting them and watching people be confused is so funny. I feel like Benji would do that to distract people so that other people can sneak in and do their thing.

So.

Imagine this: he’s talking to a security guard while the rest of the crew is sneaking into a building. “How are we today?” he says, leaning up against the fence next to him. “A little quiet? I’m feeling a little… blue myself. A little anxious for no particular reason, a little sad that I should be feeling anxious at this stage of life. You know, a little self conscious anxiety that results in unspecific sadness. A state that I call blue.”

At this point he is standing up and moving around and using his hands and body to accentuate his words and block the rest of the crew from sight.

“Anyway,” he says, “whenever I’m feeling this way— blue— I like to listen to my music. So I was going through my box of records this morning— yes, records— and what should I find but Gable and Stein’s The Drowsy Chaperone!” He makes awkward eye contact with the guard for a few moments. “Remember? Music by Julie Dale, Lyrics by Sydney Stein?”

A few more moments of awkward eye contact, then, “Here, I’ll tell you what it says on the back. It says “music, mayhem, and a gay wedding.” He pauses and then laughs. “Of course, that meant a different thing then then it does now, but then it just meant fun! And that’s exactly what this show is— fun!”

Yet more awkward eye contact while the security guard is trying to figure out how to respond, and Benji sighs long-sufferingly, putting his hand on the guard’s shoulder and waving his hand in the air like he’s showing a headline. “Just visualize. Imagine, if you will: it’s November of 1928 and you’ve just arrived at the doors of the Moscow theater. It’s cold and a heavy sleet is falling from the sky l, but you don’t care, because you’re about to see a Broadway show!”

The security guard nods awkwardly and shrugs Benji’s hand off his shoulder, walking away backward very slowly. “Yeah, I have to go. Sorry.” After a few steps, he starts sprinting.

Benji waits until he’s out of sight, and then runs over to the group, who are hiding behind the wall so they’re not seen. “I got him. We’re good. Let’s go.”

Hunter starts laughing, telling Benji how weird he looked, Joy and Jericho congratulate him, and Kaius makes some comment on how it took him long enough, and then Benji picks the lock and they continue on with their mission.

The rest of the crew: holy shit dude! How'd you come up with that so quick?

Benji, laughing nervously: yep, definitely all me!

Jacob and Sam truly looked like zygotes as older teenagers/young adults. Those are just little babies. Adorable, but definitely examples of how some people reach peak hotness starting in their 30s.

Kind of interesting, for Sam in particular, it seems like he's played a lot of roles where being handsome is part of the character, and I'm now being a weirdo and wondering if he was considered handsome as he grew up or if he grew into that. He somehow doesn't always act, to me, like someone who's viscerally aware of being as handsome as he is. Not that I expect good-looking people to all be arrogant, the most beautiful people I've known have tended to be very nice, but there's just a quality...i don't know how to explain it.

They both definitely grew into their features, haha. It must be such a weird thing to age as an actor, and constantly have people discovering performances of yours from when you were younger. I think about that a lot with child stars, particularly child stars who are part of shows and films that become pop cultural juggernauts like The Goonies or Stranger Things. Like to grow up and have your (sometimes very!) younger face be a part of everyone's history instead of just your own must be a really weird feeling.

As for Sam - - I'd say yes and no? He's definitely done a few romances, which I think does usually mean being handsome is high on the casting agent's requirements list, haha, and I think having a certain look was a consideration for both Lambs of God and The Riot Club, but he's also played a lot of roles where I think he's cast as a bit of an Australian every-man, actually? I'm thinking of the roles that I've seen him in, and he plays a highschool teacher in The Hunting, a sergeant in The Drover's Wife, a country boy in Bloom, a soldier in The Railway Man, hell, even playing Dale in The Newsreader is I think is more about being photogenic than it is about necessarily being handsome. Even that clip of his first TV role, he was a plumber.

If he was considered handsome as he grew up - - who knows, haha. Probably. He's also well-documented as being a theatre kid / farm boy at a very prestigious all-boys private school in Sydney in the mid-00s though, so I imagine he was humbled pretty regularly to put it mildly.
