Second Legacy Household Introduction: Kiayo Goth and the Kim-Goths Family
Backstory ⋆˙⟡
The current heir of the second branch of Astrea LeBlanc's legacy family, Kiayo Goth. One of his mothers, Yuna Ito-LeBlanc (Goth) was Astrea LeBlanc's third and youngest child. is second mother, Kassidy Goth, is a direct descendent of the infamous Goth family of Willow Creek. He grew up in a small apartment in San Myshuno. Unbenownst to Kiayo money was quite tight, so Yuna took to adult streaming while her child was asleep to make ends meet. Kassidy was a lazy yet aspiring author and coder, not really helping out with the family's finances either. When Kiayo was a teen, his parents got divorced. After he left for college his mother began and soon married professional housewife Mae Inoue-Goth. After highschool Kiayo got recruited to play D1 soccer at Foxbury Institute while also studying engineering. Unfortunately after his freshman year Kiayo dropped out (primarily due to me hating uni gameplay from the pack) and moved back home. Kiayo and Mae got along just fine, often baking sweets together, much to his biological mother's delight. Soon after Kiyao got recruited to play soccer professionally, where he eventually rising to MVP status. At some point in adulthood while still living at home Kiyao met his future husband Seo Kim-goth, and after an extended period dating, the two got married and had one child via surrogate. The couple moved to Mt. Komorebi, Seo Hyun's home world, to raise their child in a gorgeous townhouse on the bottom of the mountain. His husband Seo Hyun Kim-Goth is a semi-famous internet streamer who often works during the early hours of the day, leaving him at home to take care of their son while Kiayo is off at games around the world. Their son Kai came out looking like the spitting image of Seo Hyun, with homophobia heterocromia in his eyes. Kai recently aged up to a young adult, so who knows what our young heir will do next...
And that's all the heirs of my main households! Can't wait for the next heirs' stories to unfold

Alright alright, a lot more people than I expected liked that ask I got.
Below: Stephan, his wife, and his otha wife
So: Stephan Bradshaw is the third generation of a long term Sims 4 game I'm playing. Long story short I'm doing a series of challenges back-to-back, starting with his grandma.
Rest under the cut because it got really long, and this is just the quick backstory and introducing all the household members
Tonya Cavanaugh was rolled up for the Asylum Challenge, and then moved on to the the Rags to Riches Challenge once she completed that. She married Sage Ackerman, and had twin daughters Lexie and Lacy. (Lexie had a pretty interesting life as well (and death, and rebirth, and near death again) but I'll save that for another time). During college, Lacy met Brenden Bradshaw, and they married after graduation. They then had Stephan, who would continue the family legacy of doing challenges! (They also had a surprise baby Naomi after I switched active households)
Now Stephan was set up to do the Runaway Teen Challenge (which does mean he's a high school dropout, and for the plot had a strained relationship with his parents), and then once a young adult started something inspired by the Cult or Commune Challenge (the original full rules are lost, as far as I looked at least, so it's really just inspiration). It's more of a free love, self-sustaining homesteading community that turns into a cult of personality down the line, and thankfully he's fitting into that role wonderfully.
Below: The legend himself, Stephan, and Arturo being friendly with the farm critters
The first person to move in with Stephan was Arturo Landgraab (disclaimer: the game cannot figure out how he connects back to the original Landgraab household. His mother is someone named Karen, no father, but it shows Malcolm as his full blooded brother. Don't know what happened in that family. He looks like a Landgraab though.) They met as teens and became besties, and Arturo was the last one living in the Landgraab house, so he moved in with Stephan out of loneliness. The commune life wasn't really fulfilling for him though, so he moved out after a while. Something about not going anywhere in life. He still visits often!
The second person to move in was Abdullah Caliente, son of Kiyoshi Ito and Dina Caliente. He met Stephan when they were teens as well, and the life on a homestead sounded romantic. It's turned out to be much more... grimy than he expected. The life agrees with him some days and irritates him others, but he's willing to stick around. Mostly because Stephan is sweet on him.
Below: Abdullah and Rita helping with gardening chores
The third to join the homestead community was Rita Assaoui, daughter of Mehdi and Princess Assaoui (Pretty sure they're randomly generated townies). They met during Abdullah's High School graduation and hit it off pretty quick. She's one of the more headstrong ones in the group, but her and Stephan have a bit of a when-they're-both-in-the-mood kind of relationships. His charm is the reason she moved in, anyway. She also flirts here and there with the others when the mood strikes, but most aren't really up her alley.
Fourth to join was Lucille Katz, daughter of Hugo Villareal and Danica Katz (likely a townie). She also met the group at Abdullah's graduation, and visited a few times to see what things were like. When she moved in, she and Stephan hit it off nearly immediately, and ended up with one of the strongest relationships in the household (much to Abdullah's annoyance). The life fits her extremely well, and she's thriving almost as much as Stephan. They also recently had a baby boy! Garrett Bradshaw, who somehow got red hair. But his aunt has red hair so I'm guessing a recessive gene.
Below: Lucille on laundry duty, Rylie chatting up customers at the homestead's market stall, and Stephan with baby Garret
Fifth to join was Rylie Volkov, daughter of Kristopher Volkov and Lilith Pleasant. She joined because of Stephan's charm and flirting as well, also after visiting a few times so they could get to know each other. But despite the initial charm, she and Stephan seem to have a hot and cold, on again off again relationship. Not for lack of trying on his part. But she does seem to have a thing for one of the residents in a rental on the property.
He's... "courting" I guess would the the best term, a couple other people. With Arturo moving out he has a spot in the community he'd like to fill, but the last few people he's tried to befriend didn't sit well with him. And he will, of course, flirt shamelessly with them once they move in.
Below: Potential new housemates getting vetted with the "tried and true" method of playing Thumbs Up
(Fun family facts: Rylie's half-brother is married to Lucille's aunt, and Abdullah's half-brother has a kid with Arturo's half-sister. The family trees in this game get nuts the longer you go. I'm not about to make it any better)
There are a few other people technically living on the homestead, but they reside in "rental units". Stephan set them up for people wanting to try out the homesteading life without fully committing, vagrants needing a place to stay that only cost labor, or simply anyone willing to live on an off-the-grid farm. (Doylist reason: I didn't want to control that many sims, but wanted a more populated commune. It's working for the most part. They help out with chores in the shared areas, and hang out with the rest of the group. Depending on how many children I decide to let Stephan have, Rylie and whichever new person may move into one to make space)
#the sims 4#ts4#ts4 gameplay#dear god what do I tag this as#I can't even use like ''the bradshaw legacy'' cuz I don't have a consistent surname in this family#I'll figure it out if and when I post more about them

Charisma, Charisma Battle Anthem - Fumiya Ito English Lyrics Translation
TL Notes:
I kind of butcher it in the English translation, but what Fumiya calls a “Yukichi Bromide” is just 10,000 yen. He likes to collect a bunch of them like bromides, like a hardcore stan with their ita bags and rooms of the same merch. I think I managed to get the point across. The American version I guess would be “Lincoln Photocards” or something like that lol.
I really had to keep myself from writing “my peppy lil pro idol” because maybe Fumiya would have come off a little Discord admin-y. But I think Fumiya would do anything for some yen at this rate. Anyways, JPY is just the currency (Japanese Yen). Like how he calls the Yukichi note a bromide, he essentially relates JPY to an idol he adores.
そそり勃つ/sosoritatsu: To become erect (like a nipple/penis/etc).
I don’t even know how to explain where Amahiko gets asparagus from 野天門. 野天 (noten) is to be in the open air and 門 (mon) is gate. His ass is a gate…. Also thank you to my friend for pointing out that で (de) is in fact a location marker, and with the shape of asparagus…. You can see asparagus inside Amahiko’s Wild Gate ;)
札束 (satsutaba) is a bundle of cash/stack of money. So he’s collecting those bands!!!
“Do well on your mission and “you will be rewarded”. This most definitely has some religious connotation, given the verse as well as the whole thing of Fumiya and his “godly” message. A missionary going on a mission.
ビターな甘味処 “This place is bittersweet” 甘味処/kanmidokoro is a cafe featuring Japanese sweets. Bitter sweet[shop].
“Shit that makes something out of nothing call that Holy shit” Ohse our Holy Mary <3
Tera, peta, and exa are SI prefixes. Tera is 1012, peta is 1015, and exa is 1018. Lots of beauty to go around.
I can’t keep beating around the bush anymore with Amahiko. I try to fluff up anything he says but if he were to say “I LOVE ROUGH ANAL SEX” in full blown English what am I supposed to do at this point. I give up.
Fun fact! Look up χάρισμα. This is read as charisma…. Which in Greek, means gift of god! A divine boon.
Raps are not my strong suit. Maybe one day I’ll be able to make this make sense. In the meantime, I tried. Not my best work. I really appreciate the writers creativity though <3 even though it melts my mind a lot of the times.
“1, 2, 3” Chasin’, chasin’ after that paper like collectible photo cards “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7” Driven High, you’ll get your fair share “1, 2, 3” JPY, my peppy pro idol A handbook? Nah, how ‘bout a tour guide? “Charisma Style Rap Battle Break!”
Didn’t I already explain it to ya? Well to sum it up At the beginning of the week Let's call it Charisma Monday Interpol scatters Asia’s allies Marching alongside them, inciting right and wrong
Even birds who tweet their blessings have morals Attaining that QOL comes with responsibility Adulterated fraternizing, Not love for you Try to follow a different justice without diminishing it
Take advantage of that gap in my armor I’m a speedy, pro-slave Just a stray dog if you don’t call my name So tip my scale with endless burdens
Rebel then counter, counter, counter And counter again Lemme paint a picture of me for ya I’m like a coyote in the Sonoran desert Bloodthirsty and comin’ for ya throat
Beat down the greed that’s outta your league I’ve got a great view from down here like the shitty bug I am There’s 7 of us, but I’m the only dwarf The color of snow white Neurosis
No need for even a sliver of eccentricity Am I a necessity? “Seeking irregularities” Even from a long, long, long, long, long time ago, I’m a legacy Yes, I’m super beautiful ♪
The inevitable is calm So stiffen up This world’s fate is sexy! It’s sexy to read “Amahiko’s Wild Gate” With “ASSparagus!”
Magnificent 7th wonder I reach out and grab some bands Now it’s time to shine This Charisma Alchemy We’ve already got it in the bag
24/7 We set out, under the same roof With our everyday chaotic synergy 24/7 Eating out of the same pot Check out our flashy energy
Don’t give a shit about Pitiful jealousy Don’t give a shit about Living shamefully
Just shout out whenever And you can tell by the sound of footsteps
24/7 We set out, under the same roof With our everyday chaotic synergy 24/7 Eating out of the same pot Check out our flashy energy
We ain’t friends so stay out of our way ‘S no good? This is the path between Good and Evil
However! We’ve got rules here too If someone’s in trouble We’re all going down together

I wonder, are there spawns of demons and gods? And when you sift through them, how many people will be left? Do well on your mission and “you will be rewarded” This place is bittersweet
A pure white monologue No need for a secretary, just this diary You’re a caller of injustice So let’s get to the bottom of this, are you good or evil
Another successful case of tendonitis If you can’t get it, then we aren’t on the same page Those who are scrupulous Are squares My load tolerance is more than double-digits
Rage Against everything in this world Always angry, forgetting how to show mercy “Right?” Garbage that don’t burn That’s bullshit I’ll light it up anyways
Scum who is bewildered by those who are gentle A dark craft that drains the joys and sorrows of peace Shit that makes something out of nothing call that Holy shit A digital tattoo engraver
A neverending diffusion in every direction My beauty multiplies: tera, peta, and exa Mirror, oh mirror Even if you can’t understand the words The answer is revealed right in front of you
Extremely☆Horny A midsummer monster Quivering☆swaying A gift from God Locked in a grapple Inside of you Is a treasure Nearly bare!
If you back out now, it’ll vanish Your offerings of one hundred million Are not nearly enough But they can offset it “Rainy days” So from the back With no motion “Strike” While the iron’s still hot
24/7 We set out, under the same roof With our everyday chaotic synergy 24/7 Eating out of the same pot Check out our flashy energy
Don’t give a shit about Pitiful jealousy Don’t give a shit about Living shamefully

Tag people you want to get to know better
Thank you for the tag @nananarc <3
Favorite Color: Black and red! These are the colors I (and my OCs) wear most often / I have my entire Linux distro customized around / that seem the most pleasant to my eyes. Honorable mentions: green (especially on trees during spring/summer), pastel pink and purple.
Currently Reading: Didn't have time to read books lately, but I bought myself the 3-in-1 collection of Uzumaki by Junji Ito, so these are probably the ones I'll read next. I only read his short stories thus far and I'm hyped.
Last Song: Duett (feat. Hayley Roscoe) - Savour. Duett is the best when it comes to synthwave imo.
Last Movie: Memento (2000). Watched it quite a few times now, but it's one of my favs, so I keep coming back to it.
Last Series: FLCL! Finished just a few days ago. It was really fun, but to understand it in its entirety I'm gonna need to give it another watch soon.
Sweet, Savory, or Spicy: I love everything sweet, but I eat spicy food more often.
Craving: Right now - milk chocolate!
Tea or Coffee: I drink coffee every morning, but it's tea I can't live without. My partner and I need to have multiple different flavors at any given time. I drink several cups a day <3
Currently Working On: A fic! I'm not sure if anything good comes out of it or if I'm gonna release it here (I'm shy about some subjects lol), but I'm trying my best to make it happen. Aaaand I'm still gathering footage for my Legacy of Kain tribute video (and maybe some tumblr gifsets), but life/work-related stuff made it hard for me to finish the last game. Getting there, though. There is some game dev stuff too I guess, but it's too far into the possible future to talk about.

Back at the Atherstone home, right before another school day, Brielle is still trying to max her knitting skill. Alejandro vacuums while being haunted by the ghost raccoon and Acco writes a book about his childhood experiences.
Atreo: “Derya! You’re alive!”
Derya: “Zehra burned all my stuff, but yeah I am!”
Atreo: “Oh, sorry about that.”
Derya: "It's okay, she let me live, that's all that matters. I heard you became just friends with Asmara..."
Atreo: "Yup, you wanna be my gf now?"
Derya: "Ofcs!"
I don’t want to write about all the dates and first kisses and new relationships Atreo is having, so please enjoy this seduction montage!
Atreo: “After all the flirting, the sensual back rubs and us becoming boyfriends, I'm pretty certain I’m not into guys. My preferences are firmly set so... Can we just be friends?”
Chase: “Yes. I understand… I think. Are you still dedicating a song to me?”
Atreo: “No. Sorry."
Later at the Ito house...
Atreo: “I’m making excellent progress all thanks to you and your in-depth research!”
Zehra: “Aw, I love you- er, seeing you succeed.”
Derya: “Atreo are we gonna go on a date soon or-”
Esma: “Desperate much?”
Zehra: “Ugh shut up Derya!”
Atreo: "So… Am I popular enough yet? I’ve seduced nearly every girl at school?”
Esma: “Sorry, not feeling it. I keep seeing the little boy I thrashed at that arcade game.”
Atreo: “I respect that but, again, I beat YOU.”
Esma: “I’ll be nice and let you keep believing that."
Esma and Atreo agree to remain the most platonic of friends. They happily enjoy the swing set together, but Atreo still needs one more golden date to complete his aspiration.
The next night...
Atreo: “You know so much about the stars Nora-”
Nadine: “It’s Nadine-”
Atreo: “By the gnomes, I’m so sorry!”
Nadine: "It’s fine. I barely remember my own name. I only popped into existence 5 hours ago with the strong urge to date you.”
And with this last golden date, Atreo completes his aspiration, and the generation challenge Brielle rolled! AT LAST!!!!
Atreo decides to graduate early after fulfilling his aspiration.
Atreo: “Yay, no more detention for me ever again!”
He then applies to university before bed, all ready for his YA rolls in a week's time.
♫ Atreo skilling on the hack lot, beefing up his college application! Look at him go, he's gonna be so skilled and prepared for whatever challenge he rolls! Wooo! ♫
Meanwhile, Acco has finished and published his first-ever book ‘The ghosts that meow in the night’ and it's immediately nominated for an award!
Acco: “Well that was a nice confidence boost and the motivation I needed to start writing another book!”
Brielle: “Congratulations on getting nominated sweetie and for your first book! I am so proud!”
Acco: “Thanks, mum!"
Brielle: “So many firsts! Did you tell your boyfriend yet?”
Acco: "Of course, but I still need to talk to Atreo properly about him. He's been very distracted."
Atreo: “Guess who ordered pizza to celebrate!”
Acco: "Oh sweet! You got me pizza for publishing a bestseller!"
Atreo: "Huh? Oh yeah sure, it can be for that too."
Atreo: "I've important news! I got into every distinguished degree programme!”
Acco: “Wow! Congrats! Erm but... I also have something to tell you… Kiry and I are dating and-”
Atreo: “Yeah great. The watcher is gonna be so impressed with me!"
Acco: “Did he even hear me?"
Brielle *blows on pocket horn*: “I'm overflowing with pride! Both my boys are amazing! Good news all around!”
Alejandro: “Yeah! Brilliant, well done buddy!”
Atreo: “Thanks, Papi. Erm, is your neck okay?”
Alejandro: “It does this sometimes, don’t worry about it.”

Spa HC - Erik Svetoft
This nightmarish debut, a biting critique of consumer society and the "wellness" industry, recalls the films of David Lynch and Lars Von Trier and the horror manga of Junji Ito. Somewhere in northern Europe, a five-star spa and conference hotel caters to anyone who can afford it. But, at every turn, where luxuriance should reign, things are amiss. A demanding VIP client disappears without a trace. A business seminar is cut short. A young official gets lost looking for his room. A socially outcast masseuse struggles to find acceptance. Two lovers struggle to escape the horror of everyday life - which includes horrific apparitions routinely haunting them. An egocentric manager doubts himself. Abused employees accept their sad fate. Curious inspectors come to settle their accounts. Meanwhile, mysterious moisture damage is spreading. Amidst the extravagant decor, black and viscous liquid flows slowly in the labyrinthine alleys of the resort and trickles down the walls. Hot and humid, the dampness is suffocating. Mold sets in and with it skin diseases, hallucinations, ghosts, malevolent spirits, hybrid creatures, and other monsters both dead and alive. Spa is a horrific graphic novel debut marked by grotesque and whimsical humor.
Torrent #1 - Marc Guggenheim, Justin Greenwood & Rico Renzi
From MARC GUGGENHEIM (Arrow, X-Men Gold, Star Wars: Revelations) and JUSTIN GREENWOOD (THE OLD GUARD: TALES THROUGH TIME, Future State: Gotham), the team who brought you the critically acclaimed series Resurrection, comes a brand-new superhero universe. Michelle Metcalf is the world's most happy-go-lucky hero, CRACKERJACK, until tragedy forces her to cross the line from hero to vigilante.
Whatcha snagging this week, Fantom Fam?

The Hayashi Family Legacy
Generation 1
Yua Hayashi, adult. She adores dogs and is a well-published author. She’s the matriarch and was the start of the current legacy. She loves going on cleaning frenzies but never sees the need to stop her kids from making their creative messes. She’s bright and energetic and is so happy to be around her family.
Enkai Hayashi (nee Ito), adult. He was one of three sims I placed in the Mt. Komorebi world for Yua to find - and they found each other immediately. They bonded very fast and are still extremely in love. Enkai carried their three children and is a stay at home father - but also does some programming work on the side. He’s a genius and extremely handy, and is always upgrading the tech around the house. He adores his children and his wife and prioritizes their needs, always.
Mei Hayashi, teen. Mei is as creative as her mother, though her creativity takes the form of art. Her graphic design and illustrations go for big bucks on Etsy. She loves dogs as well, and can’t decide whether to pursue art or veterinary studies at University. While she is definitely going through a phase where she’d rather be anywhere but with her family, she’s got a very close bond with all of them - especially her twin younger siblings. Mei is also HoH, wears a hearing aid in her left ear, and has a service dog she’s in the process of training.
Yui and Hiro Hayashi, children. Yui is a social butterfly who is happiest when she’s having a conversation with someone she likes. She’s cheerful and playful and almost never in a bad mood - at least not for long. She loves robots and puppies and beating her brother on the Switch - when she can.
Hiro, the Hayashi family’s little whiz kid, is just as happy and easy-going as his twin sister. While he has earned a few time-outs from his “creative messes”, he’s never upset about it for long. Hiro loves bubble baths and sneaking on to his elder sister’s computer whenever he’s able.
And of course, we have the side-legacy - the family dogs.
This is Momo. She started the game with Yua, and the two are a bonded pair for sure. Momo never lets her family out of her sight - loyal and sweet, she’d rather be curled up sleeping at the feet of her loved ones than anything else in this world. She much prefers an afternoon sleeping in her bed to a long walk, but she’ll go for short walks with you with no complaints.
This is Foofoo Cuddlypoops, the first of Momo’s litter. She’s a high energy goofball, and spends the majority of her day digging for buried treasure or romping around with the twins. She’s terrified of TVs, but it doesn’t stop her from joining the family for movie night.
Last but not least is Appa. This sweetheart takes after his mother’s temperament in almost every way. Loyal to a fault and happiest when he’s with his family, Appa is also very easy to train. He has a deep bond with Mei, which is why she is currently training him to be her service dog. Wherever Mei goes, Appa will go too.
Once the household was full, I rolled to see which child would be the one to continue on the legacy, and it turned out to be Mei!

Cold as Ice
A “The Glass Scientists” fanfiction
Words - 3,043
Characters - Virginia Ito, Mr. Sinnett, Mr. Doddle, Mr. Luckett
Summary: If you want advice, or someone to talk to, you go to talk with Virginia Ito. They know this, the Society knows this, and it weighs heavy on their heart. Is that all they’re good for?
Note: I actually cried really hard writing this so let that be a warning. But! It does end well!
The healthiest way to deal with stress, of any kind, is to talk it out with someone. Worried about a crush? A friend? An experiment? A secret? Find someone you can trust who will listen, for everything is easier when you have a friend.
The best of friends will be honest with you, point out your flaws, but love you regardless and help you to grow from them.
Virginia Ito felt as if they had no such friends.
The idea was idiotic, for they were the one who held the many laments of the other Lodgers. Many a time a distraught fellow had joined them in the lab and sat at their workbench, complaining about their crushes, about failed experiments, about worrying their futures were to be hunted as witches. Sometimes they came to gossip, to talk about the latest theory of who Hyde was to Ito’s mentor, Dr. Jekyll, about the betting pool surrounding an acquaintance's virginity, or perhaps about the horrible play of the month going on in the theater across the road.
By everyone else’s concern, Ito was a friend to many of the Lodgers, despite how their cold attitude and brunt honesty seemed to push others away at times.
To Ito however, it felt like they weren’t a very good friend, and that they didn’t have any good friends.
Again, it felt idiotic and selfish, but when Archer did his rounds looking for others to take out on the town, visit a few pubs and buy some drinks, he never seemed inclined to drop by the chemistry lab and check for Virginia. When Doddle had new sweets he wanted to try, Virginia was the first he came to, not because he thought of them first, but because he wanted a very honest critique. Griffin came by every so often, not to visit, but to ask advice about what chemicals to try in a new mixture for his invisibility serum.
Advice, honesty, a cold shoulder to cry on, as if that’s all they felt they were.
Rachel came by each day to make sure Virginia was eating the food brought, however, she never came just to say hi. Those small visits though of almost matronly concern, though Ito seemed to brush them off in the moment, meant a lot to her.
And though they wouldn’t dare admit it, for they were surrounded by people who cared, by those who were curious of their work, Virginia Ito felt lonely.
It hadn’t been an immediate realization either, their welcome in the new Society for Arcane Sciences was small because no one was there at the time. Then, they hadn’t been lonely because the Society was small and close knit, if the others wanted to speak about something casual or sought company, there were few others to spend time with. Perhaps that was where this isolation came from, Virginia seeking to be alone and continue working those evenings away, for nowadays it seemed no one sought them.
The loneliness had become obvious when they saw relationships, romantic and platonic, begin to blossom amongst their fellows. It was a cold feeling that crept in around their heart like frost, making an empty sort of home there that sometimes crawled up in their throat and made their words bitter. Instead of being happy for the others, they felt envious, and that was irritating enough alone if it hadn’t brought on the slow realization that there was no one who was going to feel the same for them.
Nothing romantic, nothing platonic.
Simply because weren’t that close to anyone, it seemed.
Sure Ito had secrets from almost every Lodger, and she’d written them down, in code of course, so she wouldn’t forget them. It felt crucial to hold onto those secrets, new, old, irrelevant, because forgetting them seemed like a betrayal of the trust that had been put in them. But what use were secrets when you felt you couldn’t tell anyone yours?
The Society was full of gossips of the worst kind, the walls themselves had ears and secret passages, perfect for spying. How could they know who wouldn’t tell? If the worst were to happen, no one would know what to do with Ito’s legacy, hell, only Jekyll would know most of it, and he was unlikely to talk.
Even he could not truly be considered a friend, he was their mentor and even then spent more time out in the world than with Ito. Their lessons were long and Ito looked forward to them, but when they were over, the cold feeling crept back in.
And they would be alone again.
Often, Ito wanted to go find someone to talk to, Maijabi, perhaps Cantilupe, Doddle seemed kind, but how would one broach the topic? Would one merely ask to chat? Or simply wait for them to start a conversation?
Well, there was another answer for the isolation, they had no idea how to start a conversation without planning.
Extensive planning.
Doddle, Doddle would listen, the man was a bucket of smiles and sugar, if anyone were going to lift one’s spirits, it’d be him. Ito knew he too had his bouts of sadness, for he’d come to talk at their tableside before, but they also trusted him to listen. Perhaps, perhaps he could help with this especially cold feeling that had come from this cascade of thoughts.
So, after they finished a lab report concerning their progress on the “Philosopher’s Stone” recipe early an ordinary afternoon, Virginia stood, pulled off their smock and gloves, and left the chemistry lab.
It was midafternoon, the Society was as lively as it was going to get until late, late in the evening. The corridor to the confectionery kitchen was surprisingly empty however, though it smelled sweet of fruits and cinnamon sugar, both scents that reminded Virginia of their childhood. It was a pleasant change from the acrid stenches of melted metal and chemical smoke, and the coldness in Virginia’s chest lifted at the prospect of some company.
They heard voices as they approached the kitchen door, pausing to listen lest they interupt something important. To their distaste, they heard their name.
“Do you think someone’s hurt Virginia? They seem, snappier than usual,” said a voice, sounding like Sinnett. A metal tray was set down, followed by a new, sugary smell before Doddle spoke. “Well, I do believe she would have spoken up if that were the case, she’s so honest, and the news would have spread like wildfire you know.”
“But she’s always snappy, that’s one of her, defining traits,” Luckett’s voice said, implying he was leaning next to the door. “Y’know, beyond the brutal honesty and rudeness.”
“She’s not rude,” Sinnett said sharply. He hesitated before continuing, and his tone of voice suggested Luckett was giving him a suspicious look. “She’s just, very honest. Not that it’s a bad thing either! Some of us need to be told when we’re being idiots.”
“Yes but she doesn’t seem realize when she’s crossed the boundary from brutal honest to cold cruelty,” Luckett mused. Ito’s hands balled into fists and they felt something prick in their eyes, but they listened still.
“Now Luckett! That’s no way to talk about our friend,” Doddle scolded lightheartedly, as if he didn’t want to hurt Luckett’s feelings by telling him off.
Luckett sighed audibly, “A friend? You’d call her a friend? We barely know anything about her beyond what Jekyll has told us, and that’s merely because she is his apprentice. She never speaks with anyone outside of work, or when one goes to see her, and even when you spill your secrets to her she just tells you to shoulder up and carry on! Little to no remorse!”
“That’s simply how she shows sympathy,” Doddle stated, sounding like he was frowning in a fatherly manner. “Unlike most of you, maybe her past isn’t something of conversation.”
“Yes but never talking is something of suspicion,” Luckett said, a shrug in his voice. “Why do you think no one wants to invite them out these days?”
That was it.
Ito choked down a sob and ran, not caring if the others heard them leaving, because it hurt. It hurt knowing that nobody wanted to invite them out, it hurt knowing that the Lodgers didn’t think they cared, and it hurt a lot worse knowing that they had been minutes, maybe seconds, away from changing that. Someone called out to them but they didn’t slow, hiking up their skirt and running up the two flights of stairs to their room where they slammed the door behind.
Slowly, they sank to the ground, making sure to lock the door before covering their face and crying.
Surrounded by enough people to make a family, keeper of enough secrets to fill a vault, and they were lonely. No one thought of them as a friend, as someone to invite out, did the others even think of them beyond what they needed? Did only Jekyll think of them in a friendly manner, and only because he was their mentor? How many of the others thought of them the way Luckett had described? Did they all think that way?
Had Virginia done this to themself by staying silent and keeping busy?
Sobs wracked their frame as their thoughts spiralled into darkness and misery, they didn’t care how loud they were crying or if they could be heard because god damn it hurt. And hell, if the whole rest of the Society really thought they had no remorse and didn’t care what Ito felt, they wouldn’t care they were crying, and leave them alone.
Like they apparently deserved to be.
A long minute passed before Virginia could catch their breath, feeling it hitch in their throat with fresh sobs, despite how they tried to fight it.
And then, a knock.
The first knock they ignored, until it was followed by a few gentle other ones and a voice. “Virginia? Are you alright?” Sinnett’s voice, gentle, worried. Those three must’ve followed after seeing Ito run. They looked up at the door and sniffled, scrubbing their face before standing and turning to face it.
“I’m fine,” they lied, leaning close to the wood.
“Really? Because it sounded like you were crying,” said Luckett’s voice. Someone elbowed him and Doddle spoke, “Virginia, please, open the door. What’s wrong? Are you sure you’re quite alright?”
Again, their voice choked in their throat, should they say? Could they say? Could they trust these others to keep it secret? How long before everyone else knew that the stoic Virginia Ito was brought to tears by their own loneliness?
They blinked back new tears and said: “No, really, I’m fine. I just, need some time. It’s nothing really.”
Silence, probably full of concerned looks between the men on the other side of the door.
Eventually Doddle said: “If you say so. Luckett and I will be downstairs, come speak with me if you want to, alright?”
“If you say so,” Virginia mumbled, wiping a few stray tears from their cheeks.
Two steps of footsteps walked from the other side of the door, but the floor creaked in such a way that hinted someone was still standing on the squeaky floorboard outside, rocking back and forth on their feet as Ito had doon before. They sniffled and said: “Please, just go, I need some time alone.”
“Miss Ito, if I’m frank, you spend an awful lot of time alone,” Sinnett’s voice said from the other side. He must’ve leaned against the doorframe, because his voice got closer. “I know I did the same, when I felt I was a threat to those around me, but you’re one of the most patient and kind hearted people I know, what reason do you have to hide away?”
“Kind, hearted?” Virginia repeated, a bit stunned.
“Yup, you listen to everyone, that takes a big heart,” the pyrologist remarked, sounding like he was smiling a little. He stood normally and tried the doorknob, “Virginia, you don’t usually talk to people, I, do, do you need someone to listen to you?”
Ito backed away from the door, as if afraid what they would do, but giving up, they turned the lock and opened the door. Sinnett was quick about it, stepping into the room and shutting the door before anyone else could see Virginia’s tear streaked face. His expression became soft upon seeing it himself, “Oh Lord, Virginia, what’s wrong? Are you alright?”
“I, I just-” the words choked in their throat but they forced themself to nearly shout: “My heart isn’t made of ice and I’m tired of being ignored!” They covered their face, trying desperately not to start sobbing in front of the pyrologist.
“Ito, how, who, no! Who said you were being ignored?” Sinnett asked, reaching out, and hesitating. His action suggested he wanted to hug them, but what caused him to stop?
“No one said it!” they snapped, face twisting in anger. “But even now, at my lowest, I’m intimidating you! No one knows when I’m hurt because they’re either too afraid to talk to me unless they want criticism or want me to keep a secret or I push them away because I don’t know when I’m being too honest and even to the doctor I’m only his student and I feel like there’s no one here I can talk to and-” a sob silenced her words and so they stopped talking, trying furiously to dry their face and keep from breaking down again.
When suddenly, a hand took their shoulder and pulled them into a hug.
Ito froze, utterly stunned at the tightness and warmth of the hug, of the smell of smoke that clung to Sinnett’s shirt, of the ticking coming from his metal arm as it lay across their back. They sniffed once, and crumbled, burying their face in his shoulder and forgetting to be quiet again.
It still hurt, it hurt as bitterly as it had before, even worse now that their stoic facade had been so utterly crumbled in front of a colleague, but it also felt better. What they’d craved, that desire to be wanted, to be a friend, this might not have been it but it was a step in the right direction.
No, no damn that! Damn that thought! This was friendship, camaraderie, who else would be there when one was brought to their knees but a friend? Unless they were an incredibly talented liar, it would be hard to pull of such a deceit. Sinnett, at least right now, was a friend.
Ito returned the hug they’d been given, practically clinging to the kind pyrologist as the sobs finally began to peter out. He didn’t say anything, but rubbed gentle circles into their back until they were finally able to get their breathing under control. And even then, he didn’t let go until Virginia did.
“Feeling better?” he asked softly, still sounding worried. When Virginia met his eye, they could see his cheeks were also wet with tears, though he quickly dried them with an equally dry chuckle. “Forgive me, I uh, I-”
“It’s alright,” they answered softly, clearing their throat of a lump. They lowered their eyes and folded their arms, “Listen, Anthony, I appreciate what you’ve done for me but, I-I’d appreciate it if word of this didn’t, get out.”
“You, want people to remain intimidated by you and your, stoic attitude?” Sinnett asked, frowning a little. Virginia sighed heavily, tried to speak, and sighed again having no words to say, Sinnett put a hand on their shoulder, “I, I won’t tell anyone what upset you, but if someone does ask I’ll tell them you were, uh…”
“Frustrated over an experiment,” they suggested, looking at him with a tired, slightly teary smile. He was right, if people were to start seeing them as approachable, they had to stop bottling everything up and hiding it away. But where to go from here?
They blinked the tears away again, “I… What should I do? To get rid of this, stupid, self-induced loneliness?”
Sinnett was probably shocked to hear them ask that, for what advice did he have to give? He wasn’t an incredibly social person himself, but he was indeed more noticeably friendly with their fellow lodgers, and they with him. He thought about it and then answered Ito: “How about, you come out with me, Helsby, Mosley, Lavender and Archer tonight, for drinks? It, might be a good place to start. Then maybe, join the rest of us for breakfast tomorrow?”
That was what they’d craved wasn’t it? To join their fellow Lodgers in, something beyond work? Then why was their first reaction to say no and do something on her own? Damn habits, introversion wasn’t always what was wanted!
So they pushed past that, looking forward to just being human with them, as ridiculous as it sounded. “Yes, absolutely, I’d love to come out with all of you. And, and thank you, Anthony, for everything. I’m sorry I-”
“Don’t be!” Sinnett cracked a smile, “I may be better with the physics of fire, but even I know that humans are social creatures. Are you, going to be okay if I go back to work?”
Virginia nodded, sniffling and smiling at him, despite the small, occasional tears that slipped down their cheeks.
He bid them farewell until that night, complete with one more hug just to make sure they were alright, before he turned and walked from the room, gently shutting the door behind. Ito sighed, wearing a small happy smile as their eyes continued to sting with tears. This time though, they were happy tears.
Tears brought from a warm sort of feeling that hummed in their chest, not love in the romantic sense, but another kind of love. The exact feeling they’d been missing, and wanting.
Because if Sinnett, who they hadn’t spoken to very much, who had little to no reason to care for them, did. Whose word was it that said the others didn’t too?
The feeling of being a friend, and knowing there were friends who cared, felt better than anything else right then, and Ito realized just how much they’d missed it.

“Ama-Chan,” The Amache Pinup
(The Granada Pioneer, 4/1/44)
While there are photographs from the camps, a few home movies, memoirs, poetry, and oral histories, one of the best resources we have to help us better understand what life behind barbed wire was really like is the art. One of the best known artists from the camps is Estelle Ishigo, a white woman who went with her Japanese-American husband to Heart Mountain (and thus probably gets more attention than if she was Japanese-American herself). Ishigo’s sketches and paintings, much like Mine Okubo’s work, captures moments of daily life which do not show up in the photographic record. In many of her pieces, she draws scenes which show the every day doldrums, sadness, and non-activity of life in camp which was the reality for many people.
Photographers, whether they were Japanese-Americans or outside government hires, were more interested in taking portraits, and capturing dramatic landscapes, action shots, or happy or industrious scenes. The feelings of dread, uncertainty, and boredom, which we know haunted these place don’t really appear, and so, our memory, especially without much testimony from the older folks in camp who had it the worst, shifts towards what the photographs show--people (mostly young) making the best of hard environments.
A sketch pad is much less invasive than a pointed camera, and one can always draw from memory, so if we are to look for these dense, complicated scenes of melancholy, we need to look at Ishigo’s sketch of people milling about after they heard Hiroshima was obliterated by the bomb. Ishigo and Okubo’s sketches of mess hall lines, people milling about, bathroom scenes, these pictures, much like diary entries, or letters, are hugely important in recovering evidence of those hard to place emotions which were constantly mixing around the camps but do not show up in the photos which dominate the museums and presentations which define the legacy of the camps. Even the lauded Dorothea Lange photos don’t get at what these sketches do.
(April 29, 1942 — San Francisco, California. A young evacuee looks out the window of bus before it starts for Tanforan Assembly center. Evacuees will be transferred to War Relocation Authority centers for the duration. Lange.)
Lange captures some truly heartbreaking moments and powerful moments, but that’s precisely why they don’t do the same work as the simpler sketches. Her work aims for something bigger, something which arches over the shallow despairs and loose monotony appears in Okube and Ishigo’s drawings with their wavy, sometimes blurry lines reproducing a sense of the phantom, foggy bummer depression, which needs be meditated on the same way we should meditate on the grand injustice dramatically captured in Lange’s work. To me, the sketches remain more alive a little more because they are not so “realistic.” They can find those moments of candid boredom or quotidian sadness. Lange was an outsider, a voyeur with good intentions and an obtuse sense of social justice. Her shots are professional shots which are striking, right away, but they do not work the same as simple glimpses drawn by people who lived the situation.
(Waiting In Lines, Mine Okubo)
(Family in A Barrack, Estelle Ishigo)
Like the art of Ishigo and Okube, cartoons printed in camp newspapers, remain powerful artifacts which allow us further insight into the incarceration. Though they use humor and fictional characters and serve a more entertaining purpose than paintings or sketches, these comics can tell us a lot about what was going on, and shed particular light on the lives and feelings of the Nisei.
These comic strips appeared all over the camps. In Rowher, George Akimoto, who would go on to be a successful commercial artist, drew “Lil’ Dan’l” a Nisei boy in a coon skin cap who comically experienced camp through a series of misadventures. In the Minidoka Irrigator, Eddie Sato’s “Dokie” was always complaining about food, waking up late or trying to pull some kind of shenanigans to pass the time. Lil’ Neebo (Little Nisei Boy), created by Chris Ishii at the Santa Anita Assembly Center and carried on by Jack Ito, when Ishii went into the service, appeared weekly in the Granada Pioneer, engaging in similar hijinks as Lil’ Dan’l and providing escape and levity for his readers at Amache.
(”Artist Jack Ito working on a design,” ca. 1943-1945, Namura collection. Courtesy of the Amache Preservation Society)
(Lil’ Neebo, 4/24/43)
The Granada Pioneer, featured several comics besides “Lil’ Neebo,” including the cleverly titled “Lil’ Eva-Cuee” by Rosie Arima, which took over for Neebo when Jack Ito left camp to serve. But to me, going through these papers, the character I found myself most interested in was “Ama-Chan,” drawn by Esther Takei, during her relatively brief incarceration.
Ama-Chan, who only in single panels as oppose to full strips, was only published seven times. She is a young woman who is often featured in overtly sexual poses, like a pinup girl. Ama-Chan is much older than “Lil Neebo” and the other “Lil’” characters which appear in these papers, thus allowing for more sophisticated, or at least, more adult content, to be touched upon, subjects such as popular music, intergenerational relationships, and dating.
The “Real Banana” cartoon at the top of this post is the most risque of the series. Published on April 1st, 1944, this provocative cartoon, buried at the end of the paper, introduced Ama-Chan to the readers of the Granada Pioneer. In the cartoon, we find Ama-Chan sitting on the ground in a daze, moments after she has slipped on a banana peel placed on the ground as an April Fools prank. But, even in the more “naive” times of the 40s, there were obviously more layers to the joke.
The position of her legs and the placement of the empty banana peel say a lot. “Oh!” she exclaims, surprised, eyes wide, mouth agape. For any reader beyond adolescence, the sexual overtones would have been palpable. It’s not hard to imagine some young men (and old men... and perhaps young and old women, too) wondering to themselves, “where’d the banana go?”-- I know, this is obviously reading a lot into this, and probably not what the seemingly well behaved and high achieving 18 year old female artist intended, but having spoken to several men who were boys in the camp, and having a pretty firm grasp on the youth culture of these camps, there is no doubt in my mind that, like boys today, crude and perverted behavior and language was found in camp.
But there’s something else the banana does in this comic which is both more interesting and less obvious. The term “real banana” being spoken by an Asian-American character holds a lot of weight, especially for people like myself, an Asian kid who grew up in Nashville. I’m not sure when the term “banana” became a slur for east Asians who grew up in the west (yellow on the outside, white on the inside), but similar to the term jook-sing, which means hollow bamboo and refers to American Born Chinese (ABC), it goes back a ways. If this term was in use in the camps, this is a really smart cartoon, beyond or despite the sexual overtones.
But that tangent on race and nationality aside, I’d like to look at the rest of Ama-Chan’s scenes with ideas of gender and sexuality at the forefront, because I think this is the work the paper was intending the character to provide commentary on.
The big question really is, why is Ama-Chan so sexualized?especially in these camps where very little has been written about sexual practice? Perhaps, we should look to the fact that Esther Takei was in her late teens when she was charged with drawing Ama-Chan and was the only female on a staff of older men. The April 1st, 1944 edition of the Pioneer, in which the cartoon first appears has an introduction which reads as follows:
As the only female reporter on an all male stuff, and a very young one at that, growing up in a society with restrictive gender norms, it’s not surprising that Ama-Chan is basically a pinup girl who seems to be an expression for stereotypical notions of high school girlhood and a male fantasy. We have to keep in mind that Takei’s “much needed ‘feminine touch,’” as the paper says, is filtered and edited through a male staff which was undoubtedly of its era, that is too say not that progressive and certainly not feminist in any way. (I’d point to the Feminidoka from the Minidoka Irrigator, for a contemporary example of a woman writing a column which is meant to reinforce gender norms, privileging beauty and proper behavior).
In the Granada Pioneer, Ama-Chan may speak to the girls and young women of the camp directly, nodding to their lived experiences and mass-culture teenage ideals, but the character is also very much drawn for male readers. She is boy-obsessed, moody, sexy, a little vapid, but also, sweet to her mother. These qualities work to both girls and men, and create a perfectly two-dimensional woman. In short, she is the perfect pinup for a buttoned up, but still red-blooded community of Japanese-Americans in the 1940s. She’s got a bangin’ bod, is always dressed up/hair did, and titillates without knowing she’s doing so. She’s kind of dumb, but really hot, and at the end of the day, she loves her mama.
Let’s take a closer look at the adventures of Ama-Chan:
(The Granada Pioneer, 4/8/44)
Here is Ama-Chan, on her hands and knees, ass up in the air, searching for eggs. I have no idea what the “hair pins...” comment means. Her lascivious pose is excused by the necessity of the egg hunt. The barbed wire and guard tower in the background are barely noticeable while one is focused on Ama-Chan.
(The Granada Pioneer, 4/12/44)
A commentary on the wild shifts in weather in southeast Colorado using Ama-Chan as the stand in for all women, and their wild mood swings. I almost wonder if a male staffer put in the text for this picture. It could very easily have read: “Around here, a person has to be prepared for anything!”
... although, a funnier caption might have been as follows:
“Hey Ama-Chan, what’s up?”
“Well, I just robbed a sporting goods store and murdered the owner.”
“Sounds like a you’re in a real pickle! Aren’t you worried about the police?!”
“What are they gonna do, lock me up!?”
(The Granada Pioneer, 4/19/44)
Here we find Ama-Chan in her cutely decorated barrack, gazing lovingly, and pridefully at her collection of soldiers who have sent her signed photographs of themselves in uniform, as well as pieces of their actual uniforms. Her “post-war” problem, which she contemplates while petting her cute dog, is being too popular and having to choose just one boyfriend when (if) they return from war.
She plays into a typical 1940s American female fantasy here of being pretty and popular, having lots of admirers and a cute dog, while also hinting at the arousing/damning proposition that she is a promiscuous young woman who knows just what she’s doing (the slut fantasy). Ama-Chan, once again is playing to multiple audiences.
Side note: It was very uncommon for the internees to have dogs in camp. In fact, some of the most heartbreaking stories of the evacuation are from kids who had to leave their pets behind. However, I have seen photos of them in the camps, mostly belonging to the families of white staff.
(The Granada Pioneer, 4/26/44)
As we saw in the “post-war problem” cartoon, Ama-Chan, comes off as a vapid, boy-crazy young woman who is more concerned with her popularity and social life than the war. Here, she is making light of the war effort by focusing on her lack of a date for that night’s dance, while the rest of the crowd (all women) wave goodbye to the heroic soldier going to help with the war effort.
This cartoon denigrates the role of women in the camps during WWII, comparing Ama-Chan’s self centeredness against her would be boyfriend’s sacrifice. She must find a date. He has to defeat Hitler.
(The Granada Pioneer, 5/3/44)
Luckily, a week later, Ama-Chan solved her problem and we find her on a date with handsome fellow attending a mess hall talent show. Once again, we focus on Ama-Chan’s social life. Commenting that “They say he’s the Issei Frank Sinatra,” this comic takes aim at the limited entertainment camp could provide. The caricatured issei performer, bald, wearing glasses, dressed in a sweater vest and tie, and possessing a big gut, is obviously no Sinatra. A hip jazz club, this is not. Had the cartoon featured a handsome man crooning on stage (which there were many instances of), instead of an awkward looking old dude, it would have established that the talent show was something resembling professional entertainment, rather than what is portrayed here, a joke.
At the same time, maybe Ama-Chan really enjoys the act... if this is the case, and she agrees with the sentiment that this guy is like Sinatra, the comic might be playing up that she’s kind of dumb and doesn’t have great taste in music.
(The Granada Pioneer, 5/10/44)
The final cartoon in the series clears up any confusion as to the true nature of Ama-Chan. For all of her promiscuity, posing, and air headedness, she proves that she is indeed a sweet girl with a heart of gold, as she peaks around the corner to watch her mother read the loving note attached to the Mother’s Day present she got for her. Our sweet Ama-Chan, despite getting into some compromising positions, and being kind of dumb, shows us that she has respect and gratitude towards her elders, and is truly, a good girl.
Ama-Chan, besides being a play on words describing someone from Amache, makes use of “chan” a Japanese honorific which, in this context, denotes someone who is childish and cute. Ama-Chan, despite her pinup girl body, is still a little girl. She is the camp’s little girl. What does that say? The trope of the sexy little girl is embedded in our culture from Lolita to Britney to Ariana Grande, and historically, in how westerners have long viewed and portrayed Asian women as hyper sexual but diminutive, quiet, and childlike.
In September 1944, as part of a “test case” sending loyal Japanese-Americans home, Esther Takei went to live with a sponsor in Pasadena, a Quaker activist who advocated for the incarceration to be undone and those affected set free and allowed to return home. She was the first Japanese American not in a special category allowed to return to the West Coast from the camps. Before the war was over, she lived in Gila River for a month.
When interviewed in 2011, Takei, now with the last name of Nishio, said this about her Ama-Chan cartoon:
“When I went to work for the camp newspaper... I got a job as a reporter, I think a Sunday school reporter, something like that, and it was news. And then I graduated to having my own column, and then I decided I'd like to draw little cartoons, so I invented a little character called Ama-chan, short for Amache… It was just one little square and it was this little girl... A little situation, not too clever."
Esther was humble about her artistic and creative talents. Her interview shed no light into any commentary she might have been trying to get across with each cartoon. Most likely, she didn’t put nearly as much thought into each drawing, as I have just now, and the nuances concerning race, gender, sexuality and identity, we would read into Ama-Chan today, only came through the subconscious in 1944. Esther had a job to do. She was an 18/19 year old girl, and she wanted to draw funny, little sketches of young womanhood for the camp folk to enjoy.
Still, these cartoons indicate the existence of sexual thoughts, discussion and actions in these camps, a subject which is rarely ever talked about, but we know must have been present. The histories of the incarceration largely ignore the emotions, sex lives, social lives of young people, especially young women in the camps. I’ve been told kids were hooking up in the laundry rooms and sexual assaults “surely happened.” People dated. In Minidoka they built four “social rooms” for the purpose of encouraging dating, and there were dances all the time, and you know what dancing leads too... Scientifically speaking, everyone knows people had sex because a lot of babies were born in camp. And we know people were aware of sex because in the barracks you could hear everything. There were a lot of boy scouts at Amache, yes, but some of those boy scouts, as they were going through changes in the spring of ‘44, probably spent a lot of time with Ama-Chan.
Ama-Chan is perhaps the most blunt indication of the sexual currents which certainly ran through Amache and the rest of the camps. She has a lot to tell us. Whatever compromised agency Esther Takei might have had in drawing Ama-Chan, under the watch, influence, and editing of her all male colleagues, her cartoon and it’s not so subtle sexuality, helps us to put a little bit of hot blood into a population who we only really know through oral histories recorded in their eighties or from black and white pictures, taken very long ago. The way Ishigo and Okube’s sketches help bring out emotions are hard to see in the photographic record, Takei’s character helps us recover a sexual dimension present in the camps, especially when paired with some of the frank conversations I’ve had with former internees.

Halos lahat siguro ng kabataang Pilipino eh napanuod and Naruto. Kung hindi man, pamilyar sa palabas na 'to.
Nung bata pa ako, grade school days hobby ko na talaga ang manuod. Telenovelas, teleseryes, cartoons, animes, cooking show etc.
Haha. Tapos eto lang (as in this July 2017) naisipan kong manuod ulit at tapusin hanggang sa latest episode niya at natapos ko! Imagine 700 episodes natapos ko. I feel so cool haha.
Ngayon, I'm going to list down things na natutunan na-miss out ko during childhood. Kumbaga na oversee ko kasi masyado pa akong bata at sobrang bulag pa ko sa kagwapuhan este katotohanan:
HARDWORK PAYS OFF. Yes. Ang weak nga nung shadow clone niya eh pero nakita naman natin na along the way, dahil dun sa dedication at hardwork niya, he can now create thousands of clones.
EVERYONE HAS A STORY. Totoo to. Sa season 1 dati banas na banas ako kay Itachi kasi super labo nung reasoning niya na pinatay niya yung buong angkan niya (except Sasuke) just to test kung gaano na siya kalakas. Kaso along the way, na-uncover yung truth na there is more to tell about his clan and his actions. Ang gusto ko sa Naruto every character has a story to tell. May it be a protagonist or an antagonist. Minsan maaring di natin ma-grasp yung dahilan or prinsipiyo nila pero alam nating may depth yung mga pinapaniwalaan nila. Isa pang example yung Akatsuki. Lahat sila S-rank criminals na tinapon na ng kaniya-kaniyang village pero lahat sila may kaniya-kaniyang istorya.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BECOME SOMEONE GREATER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Ito. This is my motivation. Example ba? Iruka Sensei :) Yes haha. Imagine, both of his parents died because of the demon fox attack pero he looked beyond that and accepted Naruto for who he is. May episode nga na nag-thank you si Naruto sa kaniya kasi kung hindi ni-recognize ni Iruka sensei si Naruto he could'nt become the person he is ayon kay Naruto.
WE ARE THE MAKERS OF OUR FUTURE. Hindi tayo natatali sa tadhanang binigay sa atin ng mundo. Sitwasyon man yan o ano. Tapos isa pa, si Naruto he always dreamed of becoming the Hokage even though people labeled and called him names.
WE ARE THE PRODUCT OF OUR CHOICES. Napatunayan to ng maraming characters. Both good and evil.
LOVE IS THE STRONGEST WEAPON OF ALL. Akala ni Gaara he is strong because of his hate pero the moment Naruto defeated him, he questioned why and found out that Naruto's love for his friends defeated his hate.
BONDS. Nung una di ko to gets. Gaano ba to kaimportante? Gulo no? Basta yun na yun!
DREAMS DO COME TRUE. Of course. Pangarap niya dati maka-catch up kay Naruto at Sasuke and it happened. She worked hard until she finally reached her goal. Pati Sasuke sa kaniya na rin napunta (how to be u po?)
YOU HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY. Maaaring hindi tayo yung bida pero may mahalaga pa rin tayong role and we need to determine what role fits us (huwag naman sanang villain).
YOU DON'T NEED TO BE PERFECT. You read it right. Bawat character sa Naruto may mga strength at the same time may mga weaknesses. Kahit yung bidang si Naruto. We just need to be ourselves and do our best to become the person we are called to be. Do not aim perfection kasi you'll just end up disappointed.
Haha
