Kind. Echo x Reader

It had been a long and busy day. One that was supposed to be spent laying low and getting supplies. Instead it was you and Hunter running through the populated city on Pantora in a race against a bounty hunter to get Omega back to the ship and off world. Tech and Wrecker had made changes to the Marauder’s signature so as to not be found when entering and leaving worlds. And Echo… Echo was sold for three thousand credits dressed as a droid. 

That’s how you ended up sitting alone in the cockpit with him, staring at the bright lines of the stars passing by as the ship traveled through hyperspace. At first glance, Echo seemed fine, but that look in his eyes, the one that showed how much he had been though, seemed to grow more distant. 

“How are you doing?” Your voice filled the nearly silent cockpit. The hum of the ship’s engine played in the background, just quieter than your soft spoken question.

Echo glanced over at you from his spot in the pilot’s seat. When his eyes returned to the bright stripes just outside the windows, he spoke. “Not bad…” You watched as his hand began to fidget and play with his scomp link or with buttons that wouldn’t affect the ship's flight. 

“I heard about what happened…” You trailed off, thinking back to when Hunter filled you in on what happened, what could have led to Echo’s sour mood. While Echo was getting ‘sold,’ you were off purchasing small medical supplies that could fit in the pouches that sat on your belt. That was, until Hunter informed that he had lost Omega via your comms. You let out a tired chuckle. “You got sold as a droid.”

“Yeah, yeah, laugh it up,” Echo responded, a sharp edge to his voice that he tried to hide with a matching laugh. His brown eyes stared straight ahead, almost burning holes into the glass in front of the pair. 

You sat up straight as soon as you picked up on his tone. “I didn’t mean to laugh at you. Just… at our circumstances.” A deep breath left your lungs and even your shoulders deflated. You turned in your chair to look at Echo, who was still. Your eyes traveled from his head to his feet, taking in his features, both human and cybernetic. His headpiece, the rivets, his metal socket arm… “Seriously though,” you spoke slowly, welcoming his answer. “How are you doing?” 

For a moment, Echo didn’t move. He continued to stare through the window and out to the rest of the galaxy. But then, his eyes drifted down to his lap and he leaned back in his chair. “I’m doing as well as I can.” His voice still held some attitude from the tight chuckles from earlier. 

“That’s all we can ask for,” your kind voice assured. You continued to simply look at him for a few seconds longer. Before you could stop yourself, you speak up again. “Well, if it’s any consolation, you are worth more than what the galaxy has to offer. At least to me.” 

At your confession, Echo looked up, finally looked at you. His brown eyes bore into yours, almost as if they were searching for something. You offered him a soft smile, a loving one that said more than what words could express. “You’re kind,” he said after a minute, his voice soft and hoarse, as if it was a secret, like he was scared that someone might overhear, which one of the others might. 

“No, Echo.” You shook your head and reached out to grab his gloved hand with your own. He was cold, even through the fabric that hugged his hand. You held onto it tight. “You are kind.” There was more you could say, but you knew that he understood what you meant when his eyes softened as he stared into your own.

So I just watched Season 3 Episode 19 of The Clone Wars (For the first time, btw) and since I have already seen a bunch of spoilers I knew he would “die” but I didn’t think it was gonna be this soon?????!! I thought it was gonna happen in season 4 or 5 so I was just kinda shocked lol

Honestly though poor Fives.
