What is water conservation? Simply put, it’s the practice of managing and preserving fresh water to ensure there’s enough for everyone, today and in the future. Freshwater is a limited resource, and with increasing demand, it’s crucial that we take steps to conserve what we have. Why water conservation is important Water is at the heart of everything we do. It’s an open secret in fashion. Unsold inventory goes to the incinerator; excess handbags are slashed so they can’t be resold; perfectly usable products are sent to the landfill to avoid discounts and flash sales. The European Union wants to put an end to these unsustainable practices. On Monday, [December 4, 2023], it banned the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear.
“It is time to end the model of ‘take, make, dispose’ that is so harmful to our planet, our health and our economy,” MEP Alessandra Moretti said in a statement. “Banning the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear will contribute to a shift in the way fast fashion manufacturers produce their goods.”
This comes as part of a broader push to tighten sustainable fashion legislation, with new policies around ecodesign, greenwashing and textile waste phasing in over the next few years. The ban on destroying unsold goods will be among the longer lead times: large businesses have two years to comply, and SMEs have been granted up to six years. It’s not yet clear on whether the ban applies to companies headquartered in the EU, or any that operate there, as well as how this ban might impact regions outside of Europe.
For many, this is a welcome decision that indirectly tackles the controversial topics of overproduction and degrowth. Policymakers may not be directly telling brands to produce less, or placing limits on how many units they can make each year, but they are penalising those overproducing, which is a step in the right direction, says Eco-Age sustainability consultant Philippa Grogan. “This has been a dirty secret of the fashion industry for so long. The ban won’t end overproduction on its own, but hopefully it will compel brands to be better organised, more responsible and less greedy.”
Clarifications to come
There are some kinks to iron out, says Scott Lipinski, CEO of Fashion Council Germany and the European Fashion Alliance (EFA). The EFA is calling on the EU to clarify what it means by both “unsold goods” and “destruction”. Unsold goods, to the EFA, mean they are fit for consumption or sale (excluding counterfeits, samples or prototypes)...
The question of what happens to these unsold goods if they are not destroyed is yet to be answered. “Will they be shipped around the world? Will they be reused as deadstock or shredded and downcycled? Will outlet stores have an abundance of stock to sell?” asks Grogan.
Large companies will also have to disclose how many unsold consumer products they discard each year and why, a rule the EU is hoping will curb overproduction and destruction...
Could this shift supply chains?
For Dio Kurazawa, founder of sustainable fashion consultancy The Bear Scouts, this is an opportunity for brands to increase supply chain agility and wean themselves off the wholesale model so many rely on. “This is the time to get behind innovations like pre-order and on-demand manufacturing,” he says. “It’s a chance for brands to play with AI to understand the future of forecasting. Technology can help brands be more intentional with what they make, so they have less unsold goods in the first place.”
Grogan is equally optimistic about what this could mean for sustainable fashion in general. “It’s great to see that this is more ambitious than the EU’s original proposal and that it specifically calls out textiles. It demonstrates a willingness from policymakers to create a more robust system,” she says. “Banning the destruction of unsold goods might make brands rethink their production models and possibly better forecast their collections.”
One of the outstanding questions is over enforcement. Time and again, brands have used the lack of supply chain transparency in fashion as an excuse for bad behaviour. Part of the challenge with the EU’s new ban will be proving that brands are destroying unsold goods, not to mention how they’re doing it and to what extent, says Kurazawa. “Someone obviously knows what is happening and where, but will the EU?”"

the thing with chappell is that it’s important to be principled, it’s admirable to be outspoken, it’s a good thing that she’s saying what she’s saying in the space that she’s in. but you can’t be those things and also unprepared and unable to take care of yourself when your chosen profession is Public Person. i’ve never disagreed with anything she’s said but if she keeps taking it this hard then her team needs to figure out a way to change the way she currently operates otherwise her career is going to be short and have longterm damage
#like…… canceling shows the night before is actually something people have the right to be upset about if it continues to be a trend#she has every right to her mental health and boundaries and her privacy but she’s also got to live in the world as it is#and as things stand they need to figure out a way to either get her off social media or limit her press/public engagement in a way that#keeps her healthy#so that she can have the career she wants#bc this is not sustainable for anyone involved

Creating green livable cities via sustainable urban development
Cities are growing rapidly, and with this growth comes a set of serious challenges—urban sprawl, pollution, traffic, and a lack of green spaces. The solution to many of these problems lies in sustainable urban development, an approach that seeks to create cities that are not just functional but green, livable, and resilient. But what does this actually mean? It’s designing cities that balance…

i like q!bbhs theme of constant movement. he just doesnt stop---hes on the server every day, he explores frequently, hes always upgrading and strategizing to get better, hes notorious for moving base and having multiple saferooms. he utilizes teleportation so much that he can be trusted to have waystones or plates or ender pearls on him for even easier travel. he has outright stated that he runs from his problems. hes always keeping in stride, one step ahead. its harder to hit a moving target. what is going to break that flow
#because it WILL be broken. it will be#continuing the trend of bbh watchers saying I Want That Guy Kidnapped#because he is always in motion! always! but that is not sustainable and one day he will falter or halt and What Will Happen Then#qsmp#badboyhalo#todays stream he literally told dapper something along the lines of a moving target is harder to hit. like yeah you would know wouldnt you

Bojack Horseman episode where Bojack learns he’s trending on TikTok because he’s a popular choice for the “hear me out” trend. Princess Caroline tries to get Bojack to lean into it, but he’s offended on principle.
Meanwhile Mr Peanutbutter is offended that he isn’t on anyone’s hear me out list, so he and Todd try to figure out how to make him just unattractive enough.

It’s so deeply dystopian to live in a world where people yell and cry at you when you need to and/or simply prefer to hunt for food & material, or make fun of you for relying to some degree on sustainability (fishing, trapping, farming, etc.) as a whole… only to turn around and aestheticize and “cute-ify” said skills & ways of living for their own interest.
-Like it’s so goddamn frustrating to me to see people time and time again contribute to the recycled act of hypocrisy as new trends arrive: Whether it be to own a highland cow or “miniature” pig, or to be an edgy country-person (ie: the trend of “spook-ifing” country-aspects, like american gothic and whatnot)…. but these same people think hunting and eating game is gross and horrible, or that farming is just a thing “those broke rednecks do”, and so on and so forth. I know it’s just people only liking things when they are cutesy or cool to them, but to constantly see it happen - even with people who swore that couldn’t happen to them (think of the people who preach for helping the ones who struggle with living and providing & finance, but yet laugh at our ways of sustaining ourselves), It’s all just so … unreal.
#this is like my biggest talking point so I just had to flush it from my mind bc its all I can ever think about at this point#like to turn around and see someone who thinks its cool and badass to be in the COUNTRY with a GUN..#…but then either despise or laugh at those who have to live that way. or even simply just want to to some degree - like recreation - is-#-wild.#this whole concept itself is especially prevalent on social media bc it relys on trends and aesthetics.. but-#real life is still this way.#dog talk#sustainability tag#<- offtopic oops. forgot I had that tag um#hunting#self sufficiency
